- Hear what Nipsey had to say about gang culture. In this video I share information regarding the psyche and brains of gang members. What are some of the risk factors associated with gang membership? Mental illness can be a contributing factor for some. In addition, gang activities can lead to the development of a mental illness or worsen underlying mental health problems.
Back in September 2021 I was in a park and a group of teens out of nowhere attacked my brother, my cousin and I for no reason! we got jumped and I got my bike stolen🥺

A major fact that usually gets dismissed is the allure given to gang life via media, family affiliation, and general atmosphere of the neighborhood/city you are raised in.

I would contend that the majority of gang members are not inherently disabled in the capacity to learn. As a gang member who decided to leave my original environment and lifestyle due to disillusionment in the violence and overall destruction that the said lifestyle entails, I've never had a problem with success in a school environment. I've met many extraordinarily bright individuals throughout my "California Department of Corrections" journey as well as the so called streets. I believe the term "learning disability" is a term that, although a fair and real one, is regularly overused to dismiss many struggling with emotional maladies as slow and dimwitted, when the overarching reason for failure in the educational system exhibited by most gang members is more due to an attitude that places little to no value in education itself.
Thank you very much for this comment. Unfortunately, most of the young children (elementary and jr hs age) who join gangs are not in a stable space mentally. Question for you - what was the impetus that resulted in you joining a gang and being a part of the corrections system?
@@DrDelvenaThomas Most of the cliche reasons, including the desire to feel acceptance and what I thought was respect. I always felt out of place, and in retrospect was angry about certain things in my life. I didn't enjoy being poor and pretty early on noticed a divide between classes and the disparity in racial makeup of those classes . I didn't like police or their attitudes and treatment of people around me, especially when most of them were like an occupying force, with the vast majority living in far off communities. I started to feel like not only was the world against me, but it was in general just a hypocritical and unjust place. People talked about God or Jesus and then said something racist right after. You get told things like "violence is never the answer" but police can shoot you in the back for running and then it's the answer. To sum it up, as a kid I felt like I was rebeling or doing something revolutionary as stupid as that sounds and is, because I ended up doing the exact opposite and playing into the destruction and inequality I originally despised. At some point, I had completely lost any illusion of idealism and simply felt honor bound to ride it out and continue due to loyalty to friends or some semblance of a code

I think that sums it up well - all of the things you mentioned such as wanting to belong, the lack of good community policing that does not include the police creating a relationship with the community or getting to know their constituents.
