well actually being a single father tends to work out better than being a single mother. all the data seems to show that but both is bar far better. agreed
Chad Schrader Yeah, but look at it like this. He's on medication, He hasn't seen him in years, He's nervous, He was sad because his Dad was crying, and He knows he's been acting up in school and at home. So all that was probably going through his head.
I feel like Cortez is angry about so much more than his dad and he doesn’t even realize it, neither do the adults around him. Like his little sister passing away such a brutal way, his brother also passing a very brutal way, and his dad in the situation he’s in. Life has been so unfair to Cortez.
6:41 "I think about you a lot. When I get in trouble, and when I cry, I think about you." That is a big thing to say to your father that you haven't seen in eight years. As awkward as their interaction is, Cortez has a lot of confidence to admit that straight up. He has incredible hope that his father will come back to his life.
If course it was awkward.. they hadn't seen each other SINCE his dad went in, the kid was on his meds (which turn people into a fuckin zombie basically, I've been on them) and they had strangers holding cameras in their faces while they're trying to talk.

It seems to me lil' Cortez needs his father more than big Cortez realizes. He seems massively disconnected from the life he left behind and doesn't really know how to react or handle it.
Well he's serving life for murder. Idk how connected you can be to someone after that plus the 8 years of not being connected to your own child. I think his father cried cos he was embarrassed. It's always awkward meeting a parent in prison. :/
Precious Lopez what I meant was emotionally disconnected. It could be the editing of the video, not knowing how long it took him to compose himself, but also the way they greeted each other, a quick little "street greet" or whatever... I'm not gonna pretend to know how they were feeling or know how awkward it was. I just hope this helps lil man understand and reign in his anger.
Joseph Halliday If you are spending the rest of your life in a cement cell than it is probably in your best interest to block out all of the emotional pain that comes with being in such an environment. Humans were meant to be free. When you throw them in prison they begin to die.
Things will never change. Black people have to fix it themselves, no amount of reparations and outreach is gonna help them if they aren't willing to change their ways. It's just that simple.
I met my dad for the first time too around this kid’s age. He did SO well. It is absolutely TERRIFYING. To do it in a prison with all them men shouting and screaming. It’s so hard to tell these kids. I was once one of these kids and you couldn’t tell me anything. I love you all, be good .
The talk he had with his dad made me shed a tear. I remember when I went to go see my dad when he was in prison. I had went to see him with my sister and his mom and dad for one of those visits where you get to eat and talk with the face to face. Family day event it was. I cried when it was time to leave. Seeing the walls close every foot step you take to get in and out is a crazy and unreal feeling even though it's all real. I remember me and my dad would write letters to one another, he'd always say that when he was gonna get out that he was gonna be there for me and my sister and my mom. But he never kept his word. It's sad that I don't know him like that, and when we run into each other it's always awkward. I seen him yesterday walking home and he gave me a hug and kiss, we chatted for like 5 minutes, and I went on my way. But what's sad is he told that same lie he always tells when he sees me or my sister, he always says "I'll be around the house Saturday, tell your mom I'm coming to see her." He said that yesterday and I shrugged my shoulders with a smirk. But I thank God that I had a mom who raised me right. Never been to jail, never been in any type of fights, never was one to run with the crowd. I've always stayed to myself even now as a 24 year old. All I needed was my mom, and she did the best she could, and I turned out great. I am forever thankful for her.
Lorenzo D Both boys and girls need their fathers. Girls with no fathers get with any ole man and have kids, and the man ain’t around for the kid. They have no self worth. So the cycle continues.
@@agni_oh Nah, bruh. As an adult who was once abused, I wish my father would have stayed far away from me and my family. What is the point of a correctional facility if they don't let convicts go back into society after all the correcting? America's prisons are so messed up and its awful to watch an unjust system tearing families apart.
***** That is cruel and unusual punishment, which is illegal in many countries. I believe that all humans, no matter their crimes, have basic rights and that includes torture. And talk to anyone who has ever been in solitary confinement, it is indeed torture.
Serial killers: No, since they obviously have a mental illness which prison will not help, they should be in a maximum security mental institution to try and find a cure. Repeated sex offenders: Repeaters, no, but sex offence is a wide gambit of crimes, which range from a mistake someone made when they were in their 20s with a 17 year old to a child molester. It is hardly a blanket crime. Terrorists: Again, tricky, since terrorism is a very wide range of possible crimes. Someone who commits genocide obviously deserves the highest possible punishment, which would be death. Terrorists typically have a political agenda and believe they are waging a war against their oppressors. Whether they are right or not, war is always ugly. I never said prison was useless. I just said that they system is broken if a system meant to help society destroys families and creates a terrible circle of crime.
***** Oh yeah, we should ruin the lives of hundreds of thousands of people so a few fat bastards can scrape in millions and employee a few under payed chumps. What a fan-fucking-tastic system.
yea but the way people look at woman socially are as more sensitive and need more attention and all these depressed men that no one is giving a shit about are killing themselves.

We don't know the exact circumstances that put that father prison, but look at the immediate impact he has on his son. He is an amazing dad if nothing else. I hope they reduce his sentence for good behavior and he get out and gets to be with his family.
I'm commenting on what he did that day with his son. I didn't say, hurry up and let him out b/c he was awesome on camera for 5 minutes. I said if he gets out early for good behavior-fine. Maybe he will keep his son from repeating his mistakes. It's the impact that he has on his son that I commend.
This was extremely sad! My heart goes out to young men like Cortez. It's so unfortunate, because he didn't ask to be born into a dysfunctional situation. I pray that he makes a turn around!
@Tactical Revision Bro I’m white myself stop being ignorant. In all of these hoods, the majority of people there are POC, meaning these are the people that are at larger disadvantages in life. Generally, white men do not have such disadvantages in life as I am sure you do not have such disadvantages in life. You have no reason to be offended, why does it bother you if a random stranger on the internet doesn’t pray for you? She is a black woman and is more likely to feel empathy for these poor young black men who are so disadvantaged. Just because she said she’s praying for them doesn’t mean she automatically doesn’t care about any other race. Grow up and stop being a cry baby.
The school district thought their privacy was being invaded and more should have been done to punish students who fought and were high at school and it was to save money too
I'm so glad Cortez got to see his dad. His dad said just what he was supposed to. I hope it helps turn Cortez's life around while he's still young. GL Cortez!
The two parents at least need to be civil though. Growing up terrified of one parent due to abuse can wreck a child too. Many men and a lot of women are still children emotionally. If they can't talk about what they feel, they take it out with anger.
I always come back to this video throughout the years at moments when I miss my son. I see him 50% of the time so I have nothing to complain but there are times when I don’t see him for a couple of weeks and watching this both breaks my heart and gives me strength. The moment when Cortez walks in and cries when seeing his son again for the first time in all those years is so powerful and pure. I wish they could see each other more often. It’s such a tragedy.

Garry Berry You can't forget their other side, the reason they're in there. They might be acting like that to their kids, but don't expect them to act like that to others.

....and then, inspire of ALL this, black women rose to be the highest educated demographic, the most business owners while being eliminated every 4.5hrs by black males (from 6hrs in January 2022) and abandoned with children to raise them alone. Imagine that. It truly defies logic
I felt this, my dad was locked up for 9 years (I was 3 and my little brother was 1). He wasn’t an absent father, he helped raise me and my lil bro through prison. Even though you’re father is PHYSICALLY there, he might not be there MENTALLY. My dad was there for us, we’d see him every 2 weeks if he was in a prison close to us. He’s been out for 3 years in May. It was a little tough not having my dad PHYSICALLY there. He was supposed to do 13 years but go out early, he missed out on my childhood. I’m 15 now and a sophomore, he missed out on certain things but that doesn’t mean we can’t create more memories in the future. Growing up without a dad took a toll on me emotionally and mentally. I don’t know if I can speak on my brothers behalf since he’s growing up with our dad in his kid years he’s in 8th grade now. I think my dad honestly thinks about the missed times he can’t get back. He wasn’t there for my first day of pre-school to 7th grade. He was there for 8th but that was already too late. My little brother was able to have our dad there for middle school and now for high school.
I admire your eloquence in expressing yourself and you are just 15. You are blessed kid. Continue to honor your father. God will give you good success.
As someone who lost my dad 3 years ago only a few years older than he is now this means a lot to me. I can see it in his father's eyes and his body language. He loves his son and just wishes he could show it to him.
This was extremely sad and hard to watch, with him and his father talking. They're so disconnected the first few minutes with them only with each other was complete silence. From watching the father and the way he talks seems like it doesn't matter that he is not in his childs life. This young man needs a father figure but his dad isn't one. And why was he laughing about having murder and attempted murder charges, I hope Cortez doesn't follow in his dad footsteps.
It's not that he doesnt care hes not in his child's life...he just doesnt know how to show it very well. if he didnt care..he wouldnt have cried. the whole time i was watching it..i could clearly tell neither of them are good with expressing their emotions..they did the best they could. And he laughed cuz it probably caught him completely off guard or he was hoping that that question wouldn't come up that day..so when cortez did ask it, he was probably thinking "damn i was hoping he wouldnt ask that"
I think his dad cares it's just that when you're locked up it makes you hard, any sign of emotion is perceived as weakness by other inmates. It would be a bit difficult to change that mind-set within one meeting with a son he hasn't seen nor heard from in 8 years.
I think his Dad was trying to connect but Cortez is so nervous and knocked out on those meds that it made him slow to speak - I think they need to lower his dosage.
BayAreaTre Exactly what I was thinking. What are you supposed to say when you see your son for the first time in 8 years, especially under these circumstances? I know if I was in the father's place I would feel ashamed and full of guilt, knowing that I (1) killed a man and (2) have to somehow face my son after my poor decisions. And I agree about the laughing, it's a very common nervous reaction, it doesn't mean he necessarily found the act of attempted murder to be hilarious. I fell out of my kayak one time far out from shore, and I laughed to tears, but I can assure you I was scared shitless. I digress.
I actually feel really bad for Cortez. It seems like he's a decent kid he's just in a shitty environment. Poor kid. And living where he does doesn't help....it's a vicious cycle that unfortunately he'll probably never get out of.
Cortez is far from a "Decent kid". In the first episode he explicitly says "I always try to hurt 'em real bad or make 'em not breathe or somethin'", and is shown starting countless fights. That's no decent child.
YEAH, "I feel really bad," "poor kid," your sympathy just bursts with sincerity! As you said it's a vicious cycle, luckily VICE and countless others will always be their to film it for your entertainment.
The Ocelot It's not that he's a "decent kid." It's more like he has the potential to be a decent kid. I mean, two of his siblings got killed in gang fights and his dad is incarcerated. It doesn't justify his action but it just goes to show that he isn't doing this shit for nothing.

@Adam A. thanks for sharing, that was actually a pretty darn harrowing story and I wish you the best.
How did she die?

6:41 "I think about you a lot. When I get in trouble, and when I cry, I think about you." That is a big thing to say to your father that you haven't seen in eight years. As awkward as their interaction is, Cortez has a lot of confidence to admit that straight up. He has incredible hope that his father will come back to his life.
That hope isn’t gonna happen since Cortez’s father is serving life.

DaCamponTwee I definitely see your point there. Well stated.

Cortez’s father honestly reminds me of the Tupac lyric “penitentiaries is packed with promise makers”
"I want there to be a man in my life so I can do better". That one hit his dad pretty deep man
MAN!!!! that and he said when i cry i think about you!
I’m a father and I’m in tears just watching this. Imagining putting my son through a life without me being there for him. Breaks my heart.

***** N thats the ignorance that fuels our prison-industrial complex ladies and gentleman.

Generally, white men do not have such disadvantages in life as I am sure you do not have such disadvantages in life. You have no reason to be offended, why does it bother you if a random stranger on the internet doesn’t pray for you? She is a black woman and is more likely to feel empathy for these poor young black men who are so disadvantaged. ....and then, inspire of ALL this, black women rose to be the highest educated demographic, the most business owners while being eliminated every 4.5hrs by black males (from 6hrs in January 2022) and abandoned with children to raise them alone.

This story is very beautiful. It just shows how powerful love is, especially in a place where love is hard to find. Inspiring.
I digress.
Totally disconnected
*update on cortez* I found a post from 3 years ago saying he was serving 3 years for a felony unfortunately. I also found a post from august 2021- he was arrested for armed robbery. I’m assuming he’s still locked up. It’s sad. If you look up “cortez last chance high” you’ll find what I saw.
