Garuda Linux Ultimate Edition - Performance Out of the Box!

  • Garuda Linux is the new Arch Linux based distro that is configured for performance out of the box and comes with a range of GUI tools do tweak almost anything you want.
    ZSH, BTRFS, ZRAM, automatic snapshots on upgrade and performance CPU scaling set up automatically.
    This is a distro for gamers and power users who really want their OS to deliver the goods. As a result it's resource requirements are higher
    than you would tend to expect, but that's what you get when you add the tweaks and all the go faster bits and pieces.
    If I'm honest I prefer something a little more lightweight and less customised, but I can see this appealing to many users.
    I hope you enjoy the video :-)

      Now you can listen to the video presentation at bed-time, and
      at the same time appreciate a good presentation with the proper cadence, and clarity.
      Unlike some inexperienced TH-cam presenters who are hyper-excited and speak at
      supersonic-speed not allowing the listener to comfortably absorb what is being said.
      Perhaps they are bench testing their speaking speed or they are in a desperate hurry to go to the Toilette.

    To be honest i am intrigued by this distro but this is not a distro i would use personally because i am more of a window manager only kinda guy who loves to have light system with some gaming capabilities but with that said i can understand the point of this distro mainly because of the country of origin of this distro and that is india.
    In india we barely have any linux community which is evident by the fact that we only have one popular indian linux YTchannel (linux tex) due to the fact that technical literacy is low in india and mostly everyone here uses windows. so i think what garuda linux team is trying to do is that they are trying to attract those people by giving them a fully configured powerful arch system with all the bells and whistles they could possibly need to make the transition easier so that they can build the linux community here in india by giving then push in the right direction.
    btw love from india i really like your laided back style for video sir keep it up✌

    Hey OTB if you were a fan of the old compiz for Mate you may really enjoy the Wayfire version of Garuda. It is probably the most interesting Linux desktop I have seen in a while. I am like you I have been a single desktop user for years but occasionally I will try new things to to see what is out there. The Wayfire version is like a cross between Mate, Openbox, & Compiz/Kwin. It has so much potential to be the next popular desktop environment.

    Great review OTB, the way you explain these things is very good, thank you. This distro is also really not for me either. My Arch(Qtile) system tops out at 620 packages (and it sits at about 190MB RAM at startup), this would be a massive bloat of scary proportions for me. Of cause they have lighter editions, but I prefer to roll my own, to be fair. I believe the less craft there is on PC, the less there is to break. And I hardly ever suffer breaks, and I use Timeshift as well to easily rollback if I ever need to.

    • @OldTechBloke
      @OldTechBloke  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I go and will stick with my lightweight dwm

    • @fredrik2008
      @fredrik2008 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah a lighter system is nice, alltho Garuda does not suffer from worse performance becouse of the bloat tho, unless you have an older computer. If you want something very light out of the box I would suggest you try InstantOS its a modern functional tiling desktop out of the box that takes about 250 mb ram on boot. Its pretty awsome very snappy, alltho I am a gamer and the game performance is pretty bad on it.

My Test Driver seems like its leaving it up to me to install what I want or need. There is a Garuda Cinnamon because I narrowed my choices to 3, LMDE, AV mx XFCE, Garuda. I like all 3. I prefer Mint Desktop over Xfce. I'm only familiar w/xfce. Gnome desktop I'm assuming light, it is unfamiliar, not unpleasant, am really curious about Garuda Cinnamon & now AV mx but not XFCE. Its taken me forever to download all these distros. Lock down is over now. Revisit Garuda give a light version a spin. Looking forward to wiping windows off this laptop. I do believe that Garuda stay to Arch as *buntu stay to Debian or Fedora to RedHat, with other words this is arch made easy.
    Of course , the gaming/mmedia out-of-the-box tweeks is very appealing for lasy people...(like me...)
    About vlc, hmmm.... not fan, mpv rocks, and you have tons of GUI for ( xt7 it is written by a arch developer, in gambas3...) , also qmplay2 is nice , or ROMP is awesome.
    anyway, plasma is awesome ( not your cup of tea, I know :D), so I got me e new ssd with garuda and I can say on real hw
    zen make the diff., also i'm not a gamer but running cinelerra or davinci on garuda really bust the moove...
    Ok ,ok they learn a lot from manjaro, so what?... anyway those garuda folks done a awesomw job, by bringing arch to the common herd .As for being bloathed or ram consumption... hmm I don't care , the HW is made to be used, I rather use a distro that takes half of my resources for working that give the same amount of HW just to run a realtime antivirus...
    For what is worth you got another thumb from me, nice review.
    PS:
    Stay safe, there is a lot of crap going on out there...sadly...

    @OldTechBloke , if you are healthy, you don't have cardio-vascular problems or diabetes, you get enough exercise and you come outdoors sufficiently then you really don't have to be afraid of C-19, it is much more health-related than age-related (older people had more time to damage their bodies). Continued stress also is bad for your health. On a more cheerful topic, I use dwm these days. It works great and the CPU-load is noticeably lower than with KDE. I still like KDE as a DE but I don't see myself switch back to it.

    I don't like it that Garuda uses the Zen-kernel, the Zen-kernel really is a mixed bag, some wins and some big losses. The Xanmod-kernel consistently performs better. See the Phoronix benchmarks.

    • @fredrik2008
      @fredrik2008 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it depends on the system, on my system zen kernel is way snappier then xanmod, both are really good tho, but I get mutch better performance with xanmod on Ubuntu then on Arch.

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fredrik2008 It is possible. For me with gaming Xanmod definitely gives a better performance. I have not tried out linux-tkg yet. Avoid the Clear Linux kernel because that disables certain protections against Meltdown and Spectre for obvious reasons (created by Intel...).
      I like Arch but I guess that I could try out MXLinux with the repositories for the latest kernel and drivers. I don't think that it would make much difference but if I get another SSD (when the prices return to normal) then I might try that out.

    Reminds me of MX Linux on an Arch base. Not for me either. If I were to go with an easy Arch solution I’d stick with Manjaro. The limited repo of Garuda and the ‘try a little too hard’ approach overall put me off, that’s just my ever humble opinion, YMMV thanks for the review!

      What do you mean limited repo? The repo is just for prebuilt binaries so you dont need to build every program from aur, saves alot of time. Otherwise you have acces to all software normally on arch and aur.

    I think that you may well have to accept that there are now two types of Arch users, people like yourself that do enjoy tinkering, adjusting etc, and others like myself, who like the 'power' of Arch but don't necessarily want to spend hours getting the OS into a usable state.
    To me neither is wrong, each have their own uses and 'fan base', horses for courses and all that. I am quite happy with KDE Manjaro, it suits my needs just fine, has the power of Arch with a clean look of KDE

    Pointless review unless you put it on Metal and run some modern games on it, compared to SalientOS well I wouldnt bother I ahve ran many Linux os on metal trying the latest games and still Windows is No1, Linux is getting there but it aint there yet, as I say SalientOS is miles ahead of this one.
