RebornOS - Arch Linux That's A Real Cinch To Install

  • Arch Linux is my go to distro but so many people are put off it because of the manual installation that's required. Enter RebornOS! It's an Arch
    based distro that contains all the goodness of pacman and the AUR but its an absolute cinch to install.
    Unlike other 'easy' Arch distros this one does not use calamares, but it's own installer called Cnchi.
    The installer offers many options to customise the installation within a simple gui, and it works very well.
    In my view this is a winner. A great distro that deserves more love than it seems to get.
    I hope you enjoy the video :-)

    For me, that is the beautiful thing about Linux in general. I‘ve distrohopped a lot, but mainly between Arch and its derivatives, as that is what I like the most. Couldn‘t care less for what of those distros someone uses, as long as it works for them. An Arch CLI install does not leave anyone with a superior os afterwards, compared to Arco, Endeavour or Reborn
    Edit: Thank you for taking a look at all those distros and such, the OTB channel just keeps growing on me!

    You many have found my next install Steve. Been running Manjaro the past couple years, but lately been a little disillusioned with it. I've done Arch installs in the past, but honestly just been putting it off as they've never gone smoothly for me. Your review and endorsement may just have provided the answer. Much appreciated! Stay safe!

    My first try with Arch was Antergos (which is where Reborn OS came from). Everything just worked. When the project ended I went to Vanilla Arch. I ran into some issues. Then, my 8-yar-old laptop died. Motherboard problem. I bought a new one last month, installed Endeavour OS. The things were not running OK. Some system freezing after suspend. I tried vanilla Arch once more. It didn't go Very well either. So, I went back to Fedora. Which is doing fine. Excellent review!

      We have a Spanish-Guanacasteco word in Costa Rica that is "chunche" =thingamobber" It's what you ask for at the hardware store when you don't know the Spanish word. A chunche to put threads on a steel rod(die). That's a chunche to instalar Linux

    Hi OTB
    Certainly an easy to get started version of Arch is something that exposes and meets a need in the Arch OS, as seen in the number of other distros that make the same claim.
    This question is more about your liking for Arch than about today's review. Why exactly do you like Arch?
    And secondly: Do you agree that it is probably the least friendly distro to new users, taking the distro, the installer, the online resources, and the official forums into account?
    I will say a bit more about the experience I had before you comment.
    At least a decade ago, possibly more like around the turn of the century I thought I would try Arch, and got nowhere, despite having previously got Gentoo running, and also installed Linux from Scratch to the point of having a usable CLI system. So I was and am far from a Linux newbie, nor that I am averse to command line: I progammed mainframes back when ASCII graphics was all there was, and had mastered IBM's TSO, Vax, as well as Unix before Unix became graphically oriented with X. It was just that I was just new to the Arch way of doing things. I got as far as installing openbox and X worked, and my mouse, but then got stuck and asked for help.
    Turning to the Arch forums for guidance, I was effectively told to go away: if I needed to ask that kind of question then Arch is not for you and we are not going to help you. To be fair they were not deliberately offensive, but without being overtly rude they made it clear they regarded me as a nuisance rather than a welcome newcomer.
    This was a shock to me, and to this day Arch remains the only distro where I have ever met that kind of response. In fact young this in now beings back that feeling of betrayal to find out that a free software project would be so elitist.
    In contrast in the Gentoo forums I had found the online docs very straightforward, and when I had problems getting X to talk across the network the Gentoo forum ppl were friendly, encouraging, and helpful.
    So my second question is whether you think I was just unlucky that month, whether you think the Arch culture was once like that but has since lost it's arrogant elitism, and so on
    In particular do you think someone would have a similar experience today?
    It was one or two decades ago. It might be time to give it another go. But regardless if how good the distro is, I personally would not want to be part of their project if you advise that they might well treat newcomers in the same way today.
    As another white haired tech bloke, I am interested in any comments you have in my experience? Maybe in a reply to this comment, or perhaps it's worth a video in itself on Arch culture and how far (if?) their culture has changed over the years.

    • @OldTechBloke
      @OldTechBloke  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Arch is not really designed with the new user in mind and the forums are certainly not user friendly. In fact I won’t ever use them because of that type of elitism. However the endeavour and reborn forums are a different matter entirely. By the way I use arch:-) because I find it stable, I like a rolling release distro that stays close to the latest and greatest, the aur gives me huge choices and pacman is the fastest package manager I’ve come across so far

    • @rizkyadiyanto7922
      @rizkyadiyanto7922 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the arch forum is infamous of their elitism. thats why there was antergos (now endeavourOS and this), which is basicaly vanilla arch with installer and newbie-friendly community.
      manjaro is another popular arch based distro, but its not so vanilla. they have their own repository.

    EndeavourOS or RebornOS? Both are clearly Arch with a few ease of use packages added but it seems like the former gives more control on install whilst the latter has a more ironed out UI.

  • @gezobel
    @gezobel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Antergos was my distro of choice before, to my horror, it suddenly finished. I preferred it to Manjaro because it was closer to pure Arch (along with the AUR) and never gave me any problems whatsoever.. ReBorn OS was pretty quick off the blocks after that ... I think maybe even ahead of Endeavour but don't hold me to that ... and I tried it some time ago. It was then clearly very much in development and it had teething problems which have obviously been well overcome ... and it now looks to be even more advanced than my former beloved Antergos!
    However, I have the sad demise of Antergos to thank for finally forcing me to successfully install vanilla Arch from the command line. I had failed twice previously and my current Arch system is something I shall not change anytime soon, believe me. Nevertheless, ReBornOS is one I'll definitely give a go on a VM later ... so thanks once again for the heads-up, OTB!

The installer reminds me of the opensuse installer in that it has valuable options for the user. I'm using Debian and opensuse leap on two of my 12 year old desktops with all of the DE's from both installers.works great. I'll have to install rebornos to an external HD to use it.

    I tried installing a couple of times a few different ways a bit ago. Thy must have fixed some things since the additional installs failed every time while the desktop and other core items worked. I actually chatted with a dev, and the big reason I stayed away was that their Pantheon is a hybrid with Cinnamon and doesn't work anyways. Last time I looked, it wasn't even on their website as the Elementary team doesn't support it as a standalone desktop. Any of the hacks to get it working have been disasters including Reborn.

    Nice video, And I agree, im not sure why this is not as popular as EndevourOS, Reborn seems to me be for me the better of the two which has derived from Antergos. I wish they changed there budgie package list up, I think they are installing gnome and budgie packages, if they took the time to selected the correct and needed packages(no gnome meta package) they can get budgie running with a boot up ram usage of 470mb. I have done multiple arch installs with budgie and achieved this with selective packages that are needed to run budgie, so its very possible with care taken on package selection. rant finished lol

    Being put off by installing Arch manually? Crazy people! :p
    If you don't want to do it, fine. It is good that there are distros which make it a bit more low-threshold. But it is not difficult, really. Also eventually you will need to get your hands 'dirty' a little bit, just keeping real. You are not obligated to do a manual arch-install but it will make the experience of using Arch better if you are able to do it, just to learn some of the basic things of a Linux install.
