A First Look At Garuda Linux KDE "Dr4Gonized"

  • Recently I have been getting a lot of requests from viewers of the channel to take a look at a Linux distribution that I had never heard about--Garuda Linux. This is yet another Arch-based distro but it does some different things. Most notable is that it uses the Zen kernel and seems to be optimized for gamers.

    This distro is made by final year graduation student from india who lives in my neighbourhood. The distro is heavily inspired by Manjaro and arco linux. Garuda means Eagle in India and hence the name of distro. Actually dev made this distro for hi personal use and later made a standalone distribution.

      @supremedeity9003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      *I have not watched the entire video so im not sure where this happened*
      I think you might be thinking of this wrongly. They probably arent talking about the fact that a PC with 8GB of ram will be more responsive than a PC with 4GB of ram. Its more about how much ram is being used by the pc itself out of the available ram. If there is high ram usage even when you are not really doing anything and your pc works just fine then that could mean your OS has allocated some ram so it doesnt have to keep reallocating and stuff and this can improve performance (Especially when you have a lot of things running).
      This matches with the principle "Unused ram is wasted ram". That wasted ram could be used to increase responsiveness.

      You can do that with any KDE Plasma Desktop. I loved running the live usb Garuda, but it wouldn't LVM encrypt on installation and I can't have that. So I dressed up my Parrotsec partition to look like Garuda, use the Plasma theme called Sweet, the Latte dock, and manually switch over a few icons that don't automatically use the theme icons. Inactive blur can be used on your wallpaper, and other things like using .webm or .gif video loops instead of pics.

    Finally someone who takes mic and audio setup for youtube videos seriously. Your compressor/limiter is a bit too much "beating a dead horse"-set, but it's better than 80% of other videos.
    Calm down your compressor a tiny bit, and you are golden.

    There is a kwin script available that can allow you to add the nice blur effect to any window in KDE. I've been using alacritty with it for years now and it looks great. You can add any window simply by adding it's name to the list under kwin scripts in the window management settings to automatically add transparent blur or you can choose to have all windows have transparent except the ones named in the list.

  • @vacant2012
    @vacant2012 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One thing about kwin's blur effect -- you can actually apply the blur effect to transparent portions of windows that don't explicitly support it based on the window class with the Force Blur kwin script. With this you can "force" transparent portions of yakuake and dolphin's terminal to have the blur effect which don't normally have it out of the box.
    This means that, in theory, you could use the Force Blur kwin script to apply the blur effect to alacritty if you normally use the terminal with transparency. I was using the sakura terminal for a little bit a few months ago and used that to pretty good effect to add the blur effect to that terminal.
    There's also a semi-newish fork of the Breeze widget style called Lightly that seems to apply the blur effect a little more liberally than Breeze. At the very least, Lightly applies the blur effect to transparent terminal widgets in dolphin which doesn't happen in the normal Breeze theme.

    I've tried my fair share of Linux distro over the past 20 rears or so. I think I've tried sonewhere between 30 and 50 different distro. And not just a quick look at it in a VM, but actually using them as my main OSs. Granted, the majority of them were Debian/Ubuntu based, but I've been using Garuda Gamer edition for the past 6 mobth or, but so far, I'm VERY impressed with its smooth general performance, EXCELLENT gaming performance, user friendlyness, and the absurd amount of open-source application, available. And just the sheer, overall, easy to us it is.

To be steadily, respect privacy, easy to use. Small requirements: Office package, photo edition and graphic designs, video editing, screen screenshots and video screenshots for tutorials. I will ask you what programs on Linux will provide all? What Distro you recommend? Best wishes.

    A quick list of the aesthetic plugins used here. First, the inactive-blur plugin. basically, if there is an active window in front of the desktop, the wallpaper blurs. it's available on the Discover Software Center and the KDE store as a plugin. I had it enabled in my old FerenOS install, absolutely Gorgeous. Also, the beauty line icon theme is probably a fork of Candy-Icons (the one used in PCLinuxOS), and the qt/KDE theme used here is either Sweet-KDE or Sweet-mars. The menu system used is the Application Menu, pretty easy to switch to in Plasma 5. The Dock used is, unsurprisingly, Latte-dock. Don't really know about that wallpaper though. Garuda has probably one of the best-looking plasma configurations I've ever seen (alongside NetRunner 20.01 "twenty" and FerenOS 2020).

    I haven't gotten into Arch yet, but when I do, I might check this out instead of manjaro. If only just for the zen kernel and the helpful gaming tab.
    I've been using Fedora for over a year, and I'm wondering if it might be good to checkout another distro just to benefit from fewer kde bugs. Lawrd I have to disable all compositing because of all the kde bugs. Heck, one time I crashed the whole thing by opening Dolphin.

    I installed it about 2 months ago just because of the extremely posh look, but I have to say: It's also great in terms of stability, usability and responsiveness. I'm not a gamer, so I can't say anything about that, but overall it's a really well made distro. I love it.
