Right now, I'm building skirting with cedar fence pickets. The inspector drove by and got out to look at it. He told me it looked great. I asked if I should have gotten a permit and he said no. Then he asked me to come look at his mobile home to build one for him. I was so proud of myself.
This was filmed and aired nearly 20 years ago, so it's not like they will see this, but... The editor of this episode should've gotten a high-five for how they timed the sledgehammer hits to the old concrete posts to line up with the beats in the theme tune. You just know that it was not a coincidence

That was just great news that The new home owner is .in a house with work that was done without permits before she brought it 😡🤬 shame on the person who did the work without permits
No, Mike said he would send someone else to fix the interior. And if Mike Holmes sends in someone else, then you know that they will be just as good as he is. This is only season 3 so their budget wasn't that high yet.
Another thing to worry about is outstanding bills. Seen stories of people hit with years of utility bills, past contractor work etc after they buy the home.
You look at the waterproofing guy, John, this was 20 or so years ago. John was 40 years old at the time. He would now be 60. If he hasn’t retired, he is close to retiring. Where are the good trades people coming from? People watch this while they were young, and were inspired to go into the trades? Mike and his crew make it look easy, but these guys are experienced contractors who know what they’re doing.
Mike, it will be a great episode if you did a follow up. But you did say you would send someone else to do the work. Will you be willing to do a combo episode? Combo being a follow up with this lady and how laws need to be changed to protect Canadian home buyers.
Decent chance that the woman is no longer in the house. She was probably in her 60s when this was originally shot. That was 20 years ago. Mike has been a major proponent of changing Ontario building codes. He tells a story of how he went to get a permit, and a judge randomnly grabbed him and had him weigh in on a civil dispute between a contractor and a homeowner
The know it all previous owner who was anti government and anti permits just wasted his own money and this ladies money with all his superior knowledge. Using nails to attach rail posts. Placing second floor deck posts on the ground, wow, what a genius.
Holmes couldn't do anything on the inside until an engineer came in and did a report. In the meantime, he fixed her dangerous deck. He talked about it at the beginning of the episode.
there was a 2 story addition that had no permit or plans if there is a follow up episode i don't remember seeing it before (when i had cable 20 years ago and watched the hell out of this series)
I wish they had done a follow-up episode to tell us how it worked out for this poor lady.

I'm in Barrie, and the holes have to be Inspected. 4 ft Code requires an Inspector. I found that out🤓

The bank should have canceled the mortgagee and handed over the title to this poor lady..
