I once heard a carpenter friend of mine say you gotta do a good enough job that the customer doesn’t have to call in Mike Holmes, and this is a guy who works in mid USA when Mike’s up in Canada😂
Mike Holmes is well known in the states too. He's done massive renos in Los Angeles and even went in to help rebuild houses for people after Hurricane Katrina in 2003.
Always funny when the stairs don't even pass the "lean" test. As in can you even lean on it? Frankly half the time I am surprised they weren't broken before Mike got there.
I also like to turn or terminate the top & bottom of handrails into the wall, so hands or fingers or clothing don't get caught on the ends of the rails.
There's a reason why Mike is so fanatical about stairs and railings. His father, fell down someone's basement stairs because the banister gave out! He died from his injuries at the age of 55.
Because 80% of people don't know how to stay on top of maintenance...so when the treads start to get a little worn, you have to do a light sand & another couple coats of poly. Maybe every 8-10 years, just depends on the wear of the tread.
I totally understand that Mike is getting older and probably looks at tons of projects....but I miss seeing him at the job doing the work....great teacher and ethics
I cheated on my staircase, had the entire structure built out of square steel pipes (by a professional metal works crew) and than covered it all up with decorative wood myself (hobby carpenter, it took me a while but now it looks like a solid wood structure all around).
I really need help like this in the U.S. I live in Ohio. Bought my first home 2 years ago. No inspection. After I moved in I started noticing problems with the house. No insulation in the walls or attic, floor in kitchen slopes, no trim around doors and windows, propane wall heaters are causing fumes that give me a headache. Cracked foundation, shallow crawl space, brittle PVC plumbing, no ground on electrical, dryer not vented properly and more. I was stupid in not getting a home inspection but this was all I could afford so I put my blinders on and ignored the warning signs. My back yard floods and concrete is broken up and cracked. Sill plates and studs in the garage are rotted out and the garage is leaning. The ceiling in the garage is not supported properly and the breezeway roof is sinking down. What really got me is last week I was sleeping in my bedroom and the dresser fell over. When I investigated I found a sink hole in that area of the floor. Friend of mine went down in crawl space and found 4 floor joists has rusty nails and the joists just gave away. He nailed them back up but said my sub floor needed replaced. He said it was a slat sub floor like ship lap. The previous homeowner had just put a sticker floor down over these slats hiding the problem. My dogs and I could have been hurt badly. I don't have the money to fix these issues because I'm disabled living on a fixed income. I bought the house knowing there was cosmetic issues I could fix on my own but I wasn't prepared for structural issues. Please Mike, if you know anyone in the States that does what you do please help me. I'm begging you.
I think they just added vents on either side of the stairs so the vents underneath weren't blocked off. Not sure. It wasn't very clear on this ultra edited edition.
Kinda....but having a license & or permit still mean nothing. You can have 100 certificates on the wall, but they are no good if the contractors don't know how to apply integrity into a job. Also, you can have permits out the ass, but they are a waste of paper if the inspectors are useless as well.
Why did they pay this contractor anything? pay for materials with a build sheet, and permits, that's all they should have been paid for until finished.
they never tell you how cheap the home owners go looking for bargans and then finding out.. it does not work.. dont hagle or act snobby or crooky.. it never works

I LOVE building stairs & or doing anything that has to do w stairs.
Rip Craig Lowe
Always great watching a pro work.
The stairs look amazing… such an excellent job.. love it and it’s great to get it right 👍
Face-palm, then LMMFAO!
THIS is why I advocate for licensing contractors and builders....
This piece of stairs should be in a museum of failure of contracting 11:16
I love to see profesionally trained workers in action. Great job y'all.

Mr Holmes says you cant do everything contractors dont know everything, but he does LOL He is so knowledgeable about construction.
I think he's still learning. I've been in the kitchen for 70 years and still don't know it all. Living is learning.
He knows enough to know who to bring in. To be able to say "that's not my forte, but here's the people you want" is an undervalued skill.
Have to go through the steps... that pun though, lmao
Nice stairs!
I also like to turn or terminate the top & bottom of handrails into the wall, so hands or fingers or clothing don't get caught on the ends of the rails.
He's pretty easy on the eyes too!

It’s like the original builder once saw stairs on TV and decided to try to replicate them. Just strange.
I wonder what it cost to do all the stair work
Those look so good. Why cover it with carpet?
In the video it mentions helps from accidental slipping.

The risers are going to keep you from tripping on the treds while you are walking up them
Ya make each one a different height keep ‘em guessing
I liked Holmes on homes over Holmes inspection because it felt more raw... There was more building as well and less talking
The new series is about 50% talking unfortunately
I totally understand that Mike is getting older and probably looks at tons of projects....but I miss seeing him at the job doing the work....great teacher and ethics
Ya....he built some stairs for his daughters doll house. She complained...& her daddy grounded her!
Love the stairs but don't like the carpet. Understand it's for safety and comfort but detracts from the beauty of the wood.
"If you do'nt know what you're doing, bring in somebody who does" -- but have you heard of the Dunning-Kruger Effect??
I sure wouldn't want my elderly parent or grandparent using those old bannisters for balance support. Sheer lunacy.

👍
I wonder how many homes Mike has worked on.

People either don't want to pay the price, or they have no idea how much experience and knowledge it takes to do any job.
Unfreakingbelievable.
Did someone move the hidden return vent..?
