Early to mid sixties American cars had the best dashboards/interiors of all time. You can feel the prosperity and exuberance for the future in every gauge, switch and chrome strip.
Yes give me that electroluminescent dash over stupid led any day.
The big Chrysler and Plymouth/Dodge had the most futuristic instrument panels. From push button gear selector to a globe shaped speedometer, Mopar had it goin’ on!!

I once worked in a junkyard where we had several cars from the 60's and 70's. I admired their contols until they were crushed. Current cars just dont my attention.
Agree! My Grandfather had a 62 Olds Super 88 and I thought the dash, and "deep dish" 'steering wheel were works of art!
It's easy to sneer at 'four seater Thunderbirds', but from 1958 through 1966 they were the ne plus ultra of American luxury cars. I want one and I don't care if it's floatey or gauche or silly; I still want one.
The only classic car I've ever drove much of has been my 74 Super Beetle. This summer I saw a 60 Thunderbird and went "woah, that's a nice looking car" and then a few months ago I saw a 63 for sale and actually got to drive it. It's the entire opposite of my Beetle and I want that car now. Thing goes against everything I like and has what I dislike- Vinyl top, Automatic, Big V8 with poor mileage and is a BIG car compared to anything I've drove... And yet that car is FANTASTIC. It helps that it has crank windows and no A/C, which I like. It's also that really rare Monaco edition, which is cool. Yeah, Thunderbirds are cool. I think I want one over the Karmann Ghia I've always wanted.
I have a really nice '66 T-Bird convertible. They ride like crap compared the GMs of the era, but they look so much better and have the coolest cockpits. People notice you in a TBird more so than other classics.

One thing not mentioned in the video was just how heavy this car is. One site lists 4,729 lbs.! The same site shows average combined mpg of 10.1. Also, I searched and could not find a picture of the speed control, which was optional (and on our car). I found a list of available options and mom's car had all of them. Phenomenal car. Imagine a restomod, with 4-wheel disc brakes the first thing being.
@@dallasguy3306 65 and 66s came standard with some beefy Kelsey Hayes 4 piston discs on the front. You need every bit of that to slow them down. With a driver and a full tank of gas youre pushing 5,000 pounds.
My dad always had Cadillacs when we were growing up. My brother (who is about 10 yrs older than me) got a '66 Bird after high school, that car would have been about 12 years old when he got it, so not in perfect condition, but I swear that T-Bird was quieter and smoother than dad's Caddy. His was also a Landau top, which in '66 also gave you an interior roof console. The chrome inside that car was insane, and he seemed to remember that the wipers were actually vacuum operated, not sure that is accurate though. His tilt away steering columns lock did not work all that good, so he often had fun with a new passenger when he would say "here take the wheel" and then momentarily swing the column in their direction. To this day, he has a 1/24 scale model of one in his living room.
Wipers were powered from the power steering pump. They’d slow down at idle.
I had a friend whose husband ran the local Ford dealership. When he went to college about 1060, his family bought him a used 56 T-Bird which he kept until around 1980. In high school, he used to pitch me the keys and let me take it out for a few hours. I loved removing the solid hardtop and cruising around. On the highway it was a real monster burning up the road, Still have photos of myself around my Senior year with that car. They also had the last of the Big T-Birds, a 1975 in Lipstick Red and White. That is the first car I'd ever been in where the saying "you could hear a pin drop" applied. And it was a BIG, luxurious, quiet boulevard machine. Several years later, about the time I started grad school, I got a 77 T-Bird in Lipstick Red and White. Not quite the same, but still quite a car for a college student, very comfortable when I made a 7-hour trip home to visit family, and a great date car!

I drove a lot of late 1970's limousines when I got out of college and yes, the Caddies were noisy at idle.
A Ride in a neighbor's 1965 T-Bird with a 428 clearing out the 4 Barrel on the highway did it for me and my brother...became an instant car guy at 12 years old. Within a couple of weeks we had muscle-car encyclopedia and were memorizing Horsepower numbers, performance specs, option packages etc, for all makes and models.
My God Bill, what a beautiful, beautiful car. I crave the era that this car came from when optimism abounded. Today, we're a bunch of miserable bastards by comparison!

Thanks Bill. This is mu favorite generation T-Bird mostly because of that amazing interior design. I'm kinda partial to the '66 because the grill was a little cleaner design. For God sakes though put some whitewalls on that car
Dude! You're always 'spot on" with your knowledge of automotive history! Being a car guy, about ten years your senior, you have earned my total respect with your research and knowledge. (Quite unlike others like Doug DeMurrow) I was 5 when the 64 T-bird came out, and I still remember my first sighting of one of them when they were new! I was instantly in love! I thought it was the most beautiful thing in the world! In retrospect, I prefer the 66's, but the 3rd, 4th, and even the 5th generation (which don't yet seem to get the respect they deserve) of T-Birds were stellar and the best of the T-Birds!

Very cool! Some kids around my age in HS had a father who only drove Thunderbirds -- they had at least three of them, all around this vintage. Rode in them a few times, and the interiors blew me away -- so stylish!
One of my all time favorites thanks to that fabulous interior. In ‘67 I tried in vain to get dad to buy one (a 1965) and I even had mom’s support. She always said it was the only “sporty” car she ever liked even though it was too “showy”. But alas a better deal came along on a ‘65 Galaxie 500. Thanks Bill for bringing this one to the channel.
My brothers first car was a 65 Galaxie 2 door. around 73'. He had it repainted and put cragars on all 4 corners. 352 v8 with dual exhaust.

I opted ,in 1967, for a 1966 GALAXIE 500 XL/**4 speed/352 / ps,pbrakes,dual exh/ black INTERIOR; I actually fixed it up a lot::: special metallic Brakes, ( desperately needed unless factory DISCS), Motorcraft Coolant Recov (* not in original Build) , decent tires/ MONROE Shocks) etc. Burgandy Color: like the one Jay Leno fixed up w/OUT 7LITRE Packages., etc.Anyways, I had a junk 61 Ford Convertible, &;the Dodge Dealer had this GALAXIE / MANUEL TRANS, LOW miles,: though not as well built, looking a LENO’s 1966 tear Down &;Rebuild: though they plowed a lot of expertise and Monies in that 66 GALAXIE…
First car I bought…in 1984…was a 65 Bird from a buddy. It needed work, but the 390 purred. The body work was gonna cost a fortune to restore. I sold it after 3 months. I would have made a mint parting it out. Sequential turn signals worked, pivoting seat, very good interior. The body was a rust wreck. Wish I had it today. This was a “must see” video, Bill!

Bill, don't change a thing. In fact, I love the lead-in twilight blast run down the road, speedo bouncing around 65 and then the punch to 80. One of the things I find sorely lacking in most "walkarounds" is the lighting? Dash, head, tail, dome, especially at dusk. What is it like to drive at night?
Cameras are so much better these days - enabling a good shot at capturing the magic of light. If you've ever driven a mid-60's full size poncho down a freeway at night (1963-66) then you know how wild those cars were with the chrome dashboards. Something sorely lacking in the cars of today.
In all actuality - the muggy overcast weather was perfect for photographing the T-Bird as the light temperature complements the paint and interior colors. Would have looked much different on a sunny morning or evening. Maybe better, but I really appreciate what it is right here, right now.
Note: It was Bobby Riggs that lost to Billy Jean King, Although there is some controversy about that match too. He was 55 and deeply in debt, and she was 29. People who saw that match generally agree he was pulling back on his serves. I suppose in the end they both got out of it what they wanted.
Customer demographics-wise, it was generally accepted that if you flew a 707 or DC8 for a living this is what you drove to work.
The interior is a work of art - especially the uber-cozy looking wraparound back seat. All the shiny trim too.
Another feature that I really miss on modern cars is the suicide wipers. It's the only rational design as the water is pushed to the a-pillars. Most cars today move the water from the passenger side to the driver's side thus obscuring the view. So stupid.
Style-wise I like the back better than the front, but I think the front would benefit from a pair of clear acrylic headlight covers to finish the lines - much like the E-type Jags that look amazing with them, and bereft without.

That's a great survivor car and you did a good job with the video. Growing up in a 1970 Bird, this car, the 1964-65 in particular, was my dream. I drove a 1966 in college back in the mid-1980s. Then bought a 1965 hardtop and drove it every day for about 10 years. I sold it in 1997 and hated myself the moment I saw it pull out of the parking lot. Four years ago I bought a gorgeous fully-restored 1964 Convertible--Wanda the red witch. My god I love my car. She is a stunner--red with a white top and interior and a set of KH wire wheels. No matter where I go, people come up and talk. Only buy one if you want to meet strangers, and if you by a convertible, be prepared to raise and lower the top--everyone wants to see her in action.

Beautiful Bird. It seems to be somewhere in the purple family(?). My uncle had a yellow ‘65. He said it “blew a rod” whatever that means. Fast car. I think the “Thelma & Louise” movie sort of made the thing famous.
"The gas mileage is atrocious" I had a 390 Galaxie and this is an accurate statement. But the 390 is ideal for a lead sled. It has tons of torque.
Ford 390 V8 is a wonderful engine.
As you say, it has practical torque at all RPMs.
It was reliable and durable, and was used as a truck engine.
My father once ran his 1968 Ford Country Squire station wagon with a 390 CID V8 without water for 30 miles. He did stop to allow the engine to cool off a few times.
A thwack-thwack noise developed which was traced to a left side No. 6 cylinder exhaust valve bent pushrod.
We replaced the bent pushrod with a $1.58 new pushrod from the Ford dealer.
Good as new!
High fuel consumption? Well there was the thrifty Falcon……………

One of my 80+ cars and a favorite was my '70 T-Bird, loved the wrap around back seat, loved the 429 power which could peg the 145MPH Speedo, hated my city MPG of 4!
My 2nd favorite Bird. I had to drive the big ones 89 - 90s bc we had kids & NO 4 doors for me until now at 66 - not by choice. At least not Granny's elderly blue metallic 4 dr Impala.
I'd love to see Bill do a 67 four door. I remember being a kid in the late 70s and riding my bike around suburbia looking at cars parked on the street and my jaw dropped the first time I saw the suicide door Tbird. PW switches on the dash.

I definitely am a fan of the personal luxury coupe. Driving my 1st 4-door car NOW and hate it - not even RWD. Don't look or feel like a Dinosaur, but guess I am. Sold my Mustang bc it would no longer be garaged, lost my husband in '18 so forced to drive his Fusion SEL as a daily. Ain't the same!!! Put 2k miles on it in 3 yrs..lol

One of the many things that I appreciate about this era of the auto industry is how the engineers put a lot of thought in terms of style and elegance. The term to give to this automobile is class, as it was with many other makes. The American auto industry in those days expressed its pride in those days. We've really lost something that could never be regained I'm afraid and I'm sure many people would agree. Thanks Bill for sharing your time with us, it's really a pleasure to hear you complain and bitch about the weather, the birds and the goats. I really like watching these videos of yours when I get to work a little early to break in while I'm drinking my coffee before opening my barbershop. My first car in 1973 was a white 1965 Thunderbird coupe, all my friends in high school were jealous! The section of the trunk in the middle would a safe place for your toddlers to have fun in.

Well, I was 9 years old when these were new and absolutely fell in love with them (Not crazy about the Landau version, though). My dad bought a new 65 Galaxie 500 convertible, but not near as cool. Today I own the nicest 86 T Bird in the country. Brief video is on my channel.
I was 8. My first car model was a 65' Tbird. My Brothers first real car in the early 70s was a 65' Galaxie 500. Nice riding cars. He put cragars on his. with fat L60x14s on the back. Glass pack dual exhaust.
I had a '65 Galaxie convertible and I loved it. It was Arcadian Blue with the diamond blue vinyl interior with a white top. Beautiful. By the way, it had the T-Bird 289 CID V-8 with the gold valve covers and gold air filter cover. Talk about a glamourous chick magnet.
@@gpiano88 yeah, I drove the 65 galaxie later in high school. Later when I was about 22 I bought a maroon 64 Galaxie 500XL with white vinyl buckets with black carpet. That was a good car. Had the 352 like the one my dad bought in 65.
The woman who stole my cherry drove a 1966 T Bird convertible. I was 14...she was 28...GAWD I loved that car!

These Thunderbirds are an absolute joy to drive daily. I did so with a Silver Mink Metallic 1966 Town Coupe. The 1966 looking much more sleek and modern than the two prior years.

One of these came up for sale in my area recently. Garage sat for thirty years with a beautiful interior, some lower rust and non-running engine. Definitely caught my attention but could not get over the side profile with its body creases. The 63 T-bird by comparison is beautifull in all views. It went to a good home, I bet. ($6500 CDN)

Thanks Bill & AHN for this one!..I own a '66 Towne Landau in the same color combo as this one. It's got every conceivable option including the 428 ci. Great highway cruiser & a hit at the local car meets. It's a great driver & the sequential tail lights are a electro/mechanical wonder for the era.

When I was a kid, a neighbor had a previous generation T-bird - that gorgeous boat style front end w/ jet engine tail lights...in blue: just an outstanding looking car. This one is a close second except that the Landau roof steals some of the looks away...that hood scoop does not appear to be functional either. I agree: the interior is where the car “shines.”
I grew up in one of these, my dad driving it until Sep '72. It was a dream to drive in compared to other cars on the road. Getting into other cars, it would strike me how stark they were. These had features way ahead of their time for mass production cars. I do remember that hood scope was not functional though from watching my dad maintain it, changing the oil, points and plugs.
I save these videos until night when things are quiet and I can enjoy the mix of automotive history, reminders of simpler times and unique humor.

Some old dude in my neighborhood has one of these t-birds, fully restored & painted a metallic blue, 1965 according to the license plate frame. It's sitting on wire wheels and wide whites... gorgeous car. 😍
