Hi Bret, Thank you so much for such amazing advice. Had to write my mom's eulogy and deliver it today. Your thought process was incredibly helpful. Kindest regards!
My great grandfather passed away literally just recently, and I wanted to write and deliver a eulogy in his memory and honor. As a writer, I know I didn't have to, but he was so close to me, so I felt obligated to.
Thank you so much for this. I have to give the eulogy at my grandmother's funeral. Im so scared of breaking down. Ill practice and practice to try and keep the emotions buried until im finished.
This is a tricky one: On the one hand you don't want to totally keep the emotions buried, however, on the other, you want to be able to physically make it through the moment. In the past, I chose to stay humorous and warm until the final thoughts. However, after presenting this talk, I had to give the eulogy for my mother. There, I let the emotional material come earlier, not following my own advice. That is a mistake that almost cost me....I had to take a break, then a deep breath---only then I was able to get back on track. Sorry that you're going through this; I'm sure you were great.
I’m 21 years old. One of my childhood best friends passed away when we were both 17 from Covid in 2020. I never got to attend her funeral because I moved 3 hours away. I never got to say goodbye. So this is more than a grade to me. It’s me getting to say goodbye to my best friend. To a room full of people who never had the honor of knowing her is a little weird but I guess it’ll do. Update: I asked her for a sign the day I delivered my speech. She sent me the most beautiful rainbow and sunset I’ve ever seen
@@brendonwertz7257 To be fair, that would be pretty heartless for a teacher to not recognize your bravery. Hats off to you for both doing this and for taking such an important step in the mourning process.
I'm literally writing my grandmother's eulogy right now. I probably only spent 5 weeks of my entire life with her that I recall. At first I felt that I couldn't encapsulate her legacy accurately. Here I am persevering the same way she did.
@@interdimensionalentity2134 Wait--isn't that what the talk was about? :) Seriously though, just be sure to leave anything emotional until the very end., That way, you can be sure that you have the capacities to deliver the whole thing. Hang in there. B
I'm so glad. That's why I wanted to put this out there. Remember: Leave the emotional material for the end... That will make it easier to pace yourself on an extremely emotional day. You've got this. B
Currently writing a eulogy. This video doesn't do the job for you, but it shows you how to go about it. I am not done writing, but I am well along my way and I can tell I am on the right path. My advice to anyone writing one is that there isn't one way to do it, and you may need to start and restart a few times, but you'll know when you have it right. It will feel good. Good luck to all.
You're absolutely right. Only you can write this. Only the one close to the departed can do this. Great advice; thanks for watching and for your support of this conversation.
@@DK-rk8ie Thanks so much for your supportive feedback. This talk was supposed to be just that--support for those who need it when they don't know where to start.
So sorry for everyone’s loss here in the comments. My 2yr old cousin just passed away from brain cancer and I’m trying to right something really special..
Almost finished the eulogy now and I kinda hit all the points. I have some zingers in there and my catholic grandpa may get mad at me but she was my mom and I know how she would have wanted everything
My best friend has just passed away today(he was 17). I couldn't talk to him for a few months. My school is in another state. And when her mom said to me he died. I felt broken. I wanna say something at his funeral. And your video helped me a lot. Thank you.
I‘m so sorry for what you’re going through. I’m glad this helped a bit. This is an immense amount to go through at any age, not even to mention 17. Hang in there and give yourself time to process and heal.
My Dad just asked me to do his eulogy. It is a strained relationship and I am not sure why he picked me. Other that to remember that he was a good guy in the end. Thank you for your help with the cadence of how it should be done.
I hear you. This is particularly difficult when there are unresolved issues. I was going to mention this but wanted to keep the talk compact. The actual mourning process, in my opinion, starts after the funeral and the eulogy. This talk was intended to be a tool to get through the funeral. After that comes the year of "first times" without the person you lost. This is the most challenging part. Hang in there and take it one day at a time. 🙂
Thanks for this. I have to record my eulogy for my father and send it a week early because weirdly in 2024 the funeral home can only live stream and project, but not allow me to speak live.
My mum passed on at the age of 39 and I'm preparing to write an eulogy for her burial coming up in 2days time. Thanks for this video. It has helped me greatly!
My best friend died at 27. I think I wrote a better eulogy than this. It's light then gets dark then stays dark but I learn and we learn from the darkness and get a little light
I let others do a eulogy for my father because it was too overwhelming. I'm doing one this weekend for my best friend who passed. Your video has helped me immensely. I wish I had seen it upon my dads passing because I would have done it.
Just lost three of my friends in one fail swoop. I cant attend their funerals, actually they were all estranged from their families so I’m not sure they’re gonna have any other than the one I write for them

I’m struggling with writing my dad’s eulogy, this video with special insights are very helpful. Thank you.
I'm so glad that this was helpful. Hang in there.
My great grandfather passed away literally just recently, and I wanted to write and deliver a eulogy in his memory and honor. As a writer, I know I didn't have to, but he was so close to me, so I felt obligated to.
I'm sure you did a great job. So glad you went for it. So sorry for the loss of your great grandfather.
Writing a Eulogy for my little cousin. Our first loss in the family since our Uncle in 95 (I was 3).
I appreciate this video.
Do it! You'll be great!
@@bretsimner754 I did it and I got an 89 and it was one of the hardest college classes I’ve taken so far. I thought I was gonna fail 😭
@@brendonwertz7257 To be fair, that would be pretty heartless for a teacher to not recognize your bravery. Hats off to you for both doing this and for taking such an important step in the mourning process.
Giving the Eulogy at the funeral for my childhood best friend in two days. This gave me some things to think about.
I'm so glad this helped. So so sorry that you have to go through this.
@@bretsimner754 We all have to go through these things multiple times. All that we can hope to be is useful for those in need.
I have watched many videos about this topic, and this was the most helpful. Thank you for this. Incredibly grateful.
I'm so glad. I have to deliver my mother's eulogy today, so I get to put this into practice again. 🤞
@@bretsimner754 I'm so sorry about your mother. May her memory be a blessing.
@@courtney3974 Thanks so much!
This is awesome. My dad is dying and asked me to talk in front of hundreds about him I'm so scared to do this, and hope I wont cry and ruin it.
You've got this. So sorry for what you're going through.
You will prepare yourself so you don't have anxiety...eat something and breath..I'm preparing myself to write my aunts
@@sashamarie266 So sorry.
I'm literally writing my grandmother's eulogy right now. I probably only spent 5 weeks of my entire life with her that I recall. At first I felt that I couldn't encapsulate her legacy accurately. Here I am persevering the same way she did.
Every situation is different. There is no "right" experience and no "correct" way to deal with this time. Hang in there; you've got this.
I’m in a very similar situation right now. If you’ve held it already can you maybe give me some tips?
@@interdimensionalentity2134 Wait--isn't that what the talk was about? :) Seriously though, just be sure to leave anything emotional until the very end., That way, you can be sure that you have the capacities to deliver the whole thing. Hang in there. B
@@bretsimner754 yeah haha thanks
Thank you, preparing to write my fathers .. still very much stuck. This helps.
I'm so glad. That's why I wanted to put this out there. Remember: Leave the emotional material for the end... That will make it easier to pace yourself on an extremely emotional day. You've got this. B
Mahalo for the great tips on how to properly eulogize a loved one!
I'm so glad it was helpful.
This really helped. Thank You!
I'm so glad.
@@bretsimner754 fyi i delivered the eulogy and it went really well. thanks again for the video.
@@JP-qk7tr I'm so glad. Hang in there.
Thank you for this talk. It helped a ton when I was trying to write my brother's eulogy. I appreciate you for what you do.
Your brother? That's a difficult one. So glad that this was helpful.
@@bretsimner754 he was also 32 years older than me, so he was both a father figure and a brother.
@@bretsimner754 you do a wonderful service with this talk.
@@DK-rk8ie Thanks so much for your supportive feedback. This talk was supposed to be just that--support for those who need it when they don't know where to start.
Beautiful, Bret. Thanks for this gift.
Thanks for watching and for your support!
This is great. Thank you for the chance to subtitle your talk in Bahasa Indonesia.
I'm so glad that this was helpful to you. Were you able to watch the talk with subtitles?
So sorry for everyone’s loss here in the comments. My 2yr old cousin just passed away from brain cancer and I’m trying to right something really special..
My gosh, that is a horribly profound lost. Here's wishing you strength in this difficult stretch.
My mother passed away from brain cancer as well. I hope that you're able to help and find peace.
@@MontyRaeSp8 So sorry.
Was she vaxxed? It's crazy what they do to newborns.
@@justinneilsonn2665wtf is wrong with you.
Almost finished the eulogy now and I kinda hit all the points. I have some zingers in there and my catholic grandpa may get mad at me but she was my mom and I know how she would have wanted everything
You know her better than anyone! You've got this!
Thanks so much for this. 😭 thanks for direction and yes.
So glad you said yes. Well done.
Hey, this was a great video. I am preparing to give my first eulogy tomorrow, and this video was super helpful. Thank you.
I'm so glad that this was helpful to you.. Cheers to you for sharing with those close to you. You've got this! :)
This is the most heartbreaking comment section I've ever stumbled across
Though it's true, this is part of the human existence.
Thank you so much ❤
You're welcome. I'm so glad that this was helpful.
I miss my grandmother so much
I'm so sorry. 😒
I’m 24 and I’m writing a eulogy for my grandmother who died two days ago.
So sorry. Please let us knw how it goes.
Bret!
This is great thank you so much!
So glad you liked it!
i have to write one for my school on the outsiders about johhny and dallas
I have to write a eulogy for my public speaking class. using this to figure it out, wish me luck.
Good luck. That is a rather unusual assignment. I'd love to hear how the journey unfolds for you.
Last line got me
I'm so glad it was meaningful for you.
Thank you for this Bret. Currently writing my brothers eulogy. It's hard to find the words.. Sound advice here
Dear Tina, I'm so glad that this was a help. So sorry to you for the loss of your brother. That's a rough one for sure.
Thank you so much for this❤
Thank YOU for watching. I hope it helped.
When I die I'm going to give me the best eulogy and in closing I'm going to say "I only wish I had enough time to erase my search history."
My mum passed on at the age of 39 and I'm preparing to write an eulogy for her burial coming up in 2days time.
Thanks for this video. It has helped me greatly!
I'm so glad this was helpful. 39 is way too early. I'm so so sorry.
Amen thank you
Thanks to you for watching and for your support.
Well here I am at 11:43 the night before my husbands funeral trying to figure out the words to say
I'm so so sorry that you're going through this. I hope and trust it went well. Feel free to share with others here how it went. Hang in there.
I’m 36 and writing about my dad funeral I’ve no clue we’re to start 😢xxxx
You've got this. Pace yourself so that you make it through it!
My best friend died at 27. I think I wrote a better eulogy than this. It's light then gets dark then stays dark but I learn and we learn from the darkness and get a little light
That's a great thought, Bryce. Thanks for sharing.
I let others do a eulogy for my father because it was too overwhelming. I'm doing one this weekend for my best friend who passed. Your video has helped me immensely. I wish I had seen it upon my dads passing because I would have done it.
It's all a process---we're evolving along with our capabilities. Glad this helped and even more glad that you went for it!
He lived. He died. We cried.
What was the quote for your fathere?
Thanks for asking. This is my point--that we only need to be able to say (or write! 🙂) a eulogy one time!
What about writing a eulogy for your self?
