    The pack looks amazing! It is very authentic to the look of the original movie packs. If I had this video a few years ago, I would have happily done this, instead of buying a vacuformed shell and all the associated bits and bobs for my proton pack.

      Chris is an amazing fabricator of craft foam, I've made several of his creations. a Steampunk'd Dr. plague mask, top hat & goggles, a pair of his & hers steampunk'd gas masks, and verything came out awesome, I've even taken this knowledge and modified some items at my job to give them a steampunk look, my boss actually loves how they look. I definitely recommend buying his guide which includes plans of everything Chris has made over the years, I did and from a creative standpoint its one of the best investments I've made. Chris is definitely a funny & Goofy guy but a genius at recreating steampunk'd items as well as movie props. If you're a creative person you can't go wrong with this purchase. Another great video for a cheap Proton Pack. Though you got quite creative with a number of the brass and angled fittings, there are still a lot of alternate read-made parts that one would find in the plumbing section of a hardware store that work just perfectly.
    Also, if you wanted a more 'true' paint chipping method, you could first paint the entire pack (or just the main areas you need) a silver colour, then use a masking medium like liquid latex or toothpaste to mask off the chipped areas of the pack. Such as along edges and ridges that would get the most wear and tear. Then paint the entire pack black. Once dried, simply rub/wipe the spots you masked and you will reveal the silver underneath. Makes for a more realistic chipped paint look.

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great idea for the paint chipping, I'll have to give it a try!

    • @LostWax

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't try to harden the foam. If you put a brittle coating over it and it flexes you're just gonna get cracks. Rather try to have a flexible coating that will move with the foam.

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not a fan of using regular spray paint, it just gives such thin coverage, it's hard to add the worn silver antiquing on top of it. If you want to spray it, you could use plastic-dip, it gives a rubbery coating that is great. Just make sure to not breathe it in when you are doing it!

    Do you think I could scale this down “relatively” easily for an 8yo?

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scaling this pattern down isn't super straightforward, unless you are scaling the thickness of the foam down the same amount as you are scaling the pattern. This is because a lot of the parts actually rely on the addition of the foam thickness on the edge to make the final dimensions of a piece. If you do some careful thinking, I think it could be done.....

    I would love to make this, but I’m just concerned about how well it would last since it’s just foam. Do you think it would have a good shelf life?

    • @LostWax
      @LostWax  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EVA foam is actually pretty durable. As far as shelf life, it'll last for years on a shelf:) The main thing is to store it where it won't get squished, or too hot, ad those will deform it. Other than that, it'll be fine.
