Beautiful. I love all three sets, but am most fond of the reddish colors. I have such a hard time using my dyed paper. What I have started doing is keeping a secret stash of the really amazing ones. That way I don’t feel like I’ve lost the most beautiful ones.
I love that you did this! One Easter weekend 25 yrs ago when my children were little, I was complaining to my mom we couldnt dye eggs because I couldnt really afford a egg coloring kit. She suggested I gather all the onion skins and boil them down to dip my eggs. Beautiful purple eggs! You have brought back to me a wonderful memory. Thank you!

Lovely papers. FYI the metal of the pan also can change the outcome of the color. Aluminum, stainless steel, etc. In my dyeing class (fine arts fiber degree) we also added rusted nails to vary the color of the dye matter. Thanks for the video.
My grandmother would dye our Easter eggs with onion skins. Of course as a kid I never appreciated them. Now I long for those days. Thanks for the memories. I’ll be giving this a try.
Weren’t our grand mothers amazing! My paternal grandmother sewed all of my baby doll and Barbie clothes without a pattern. She made some my clothes as well. She also sewed my bridesmaid dresses for my 1st wedding. Everyone says that I’m “channeling my inner Meme” when I sew. I’m not nearly as talented as she was tho.

I’m 65 now and would love to be able to revisit with a better understanding of the life they had. Never take life for granted.

@@TreasureBooks Tried the red skin onion and when I saw the beautiful ruby color I was so excited to make some pink pages. However, much to my surprise, they all came out with a green hue. I tried to upload a picture to this post for you to see but it didn't work. I like it, very pretty. Will try again another time to see if I can get pink. Also did a batch of tea and a batch of coffee papers. The coffee papers were very fragile and tore easily. Will be sticking to tea dying moving forward. Thanks again for this video and the tea dying video. Helpful hints and I really like the air drying/no iron method.
Hi Natasha, I love experimenting w different products/food… yellow onions & coffee are by far my favorites! I have tried avocado… but never seems to get that pinkish color… but I’ll keep trying! Thanks for a great video. Something you may not have thought about is the soil the onions were in and how they were dried before you bought them. Soils can make a difference from year to year. It's beautiful paper, all of it, so unique and colorful
You should check out how Latvians are making Easter eggs with onion skins we also add a bit of vinegar to make colors pop more. Red cabbage makes wonders as well 😉

Also the temperature of solution plays important role. As you reached the end, the solution wasn't so dense, but also it was cold. If you let the same solution from the begining to get cold completely without papers in it and then put papers, they wouldn't be coloured so intensly. Well, that was the hipothesis from the easter egg dying experience. Now, I have to test it. Hahhahaahahahahha I really love how you test everything and comment on the results and variables. I'm a physics teacher and I think I will make a homework from your videos ❤️ Task no.1: watch this video 😂😂😂

Thank you, fun to watch! I've done onion skin dyeing before but never let them simmer so long which might be the reason for my less than really colorful results. I followed along with you and my yellow onion skins have 15 minutes more to simmer and I'm going to give it a go. Just as an aside, the first thing I ever dyed with yellow onion skins were my long gloves I wore to my prom in 1968. In those days wearing gloves was important, but you could only get them in white. I needed them to be cream colored. They came out beautifully.
I love love love love this! I do that pooling on purpose so I get varied marks on each page. I don't cook, so I'll need to get friends to save onion skins for me. 😊

A really informative video as always Natasa. I did natural dying as a textile course and it is amazing what you can use! Adding things like salt and vinegar can change the colours too. Try different leaves and flowers too, you don't have to ruin your garden, go scavenge from a field , dandelions are really versatile. Nut shells, tree bark, spices from you larder. Keep the foil from chocolate and put that in the solution whilst boiling, it can brighten the colours. But the truth of it is you can never predict the results because natural dies are just that natural and even the growing conditions of the plant can change things. As you say Natasa, don't be afraid just go for it, you will never make a 'mistake'. But do remember some plants can be toxic so do wear gloves.

My aunt use to put cinnemon in her coffee when she brewed it, so I'm thinking I might toss some cinnemon sticks in the coffee brewing water for the coffee dyed paper and see if I can have that cinnemon aroma in the paper. This is awesome timing as I have a jar full of onion skins (about 8 or 9 onions) and some garlic skins mixed in also. I would not have thought of putting them in a pot to boil then simmer. I think maybe let the last batch rest in the water longer?! I really love the color that they produced. Also thank you for mentioning business cards, I have some sheets of business cards that are bent so will not go through my printer, now I know a good way to use some up. ☺♥
Hi Joan!! That last batch was in the longest haha (overnight) I think that maybe the first batch was the darkest, because the water was hot! Have fun with your experiment!
I love the differences in color... Berry interesting.. have u used anything else to dye papers? Besides tea.. I was thinking red Delicious apples might produce a gorgeously colored red or pink? Maybe some cinnamon for browns or gold... Oh my head is spinning w ideas!!!!

Hello Natasha, this was a very interesting experiment. They turned out lovely. If you wanted to, you could scan your most favorites from the batches made and I bet they would sell. boiled your eggs in onion skin water! (use a touch of vinegar in the water this helps.) We've done this, but I never thought to use the water to dye art paper! wonderful idea.
the variation is caused by how the pages touch each other and how much solution can get in. just the very nature of piling pages on top of each other has given some lovely variations so it's great

I'm going to experiment by putting the onion skins in the Instant Pot and heating them under pressure for a couple of minutes, then let the pressure naturally release and leave them in there for an hour or so. It would take a lot less energy than boiling them on the stove, but the results may not be as nice as yours.

Nothing fails - it all can get used, you are the inspiration behind my latest obsession: junk journalling, never really knew much about it. btw I have for many years been doing lots of fiber arts stuff a lot of plant dyeing with mainly fabrics but not much with paper. There is a beautiful blush pink you can get from Avocado pits but just blown away by this tutorial!!!!

They have turned out beautifully. I tried to dye with onion skins but got a more pale version and I now realise I didn't simmer for long enough. I'm definitely going to try this again as the colours are stunning. Thank you for showing us x

I love the differences in color... Berry interesting.. have u used anything else to dye papers? Besides tea.. I was thinking red Delicious apples might produce a gorgeously colored red or pink? Maybe some cinnamon for browns or gold... Oh my head is spinning w ideas!!!!

One year many years ago I put egg right in with the yellow onion skins. Wow. I had one mahogany colored egg.

What amazing colours I have used tea bags and coffee stained paper but off to buy onions and avocado’s I think it is superb how you can dye paper with natural dyes looking forward to the next exciting dye vid you Rock.

Hello Natasha, this was a very interesting experiment. They turned out lovely. If you wanted to, you could scan your most favorites from the batches made and I bet they would sell. boiled your eggs in onion skin water! (use a touch of vinegar in the water this helps.) We've done this, but I never thought to use the water to dye art paper! wonderful idea.

the variation is caused by how the pages touch each other and how much solution can get in. just the very nature of piling pages on top of each other has given some lovely variations so it's great

I can't believe this didn't cross my mind. I dye my Easter eggs in onion skins since I was little. This is an amazing idea. Thank you so much 🙂💜💖
I'm going to experiment by putting the onion skins in the Instant Pot and heating them under pressure for a couple of minutes, then let the pressure naturally release and leave them in there for an hour or so. It would take a lot less energy than boiling them on the stove, but the results may not be as nice as yours.

Hello, beautiful colors!! Nothing fails - it all can get used, you are the inspiration behind my latest obsession: junk journalling, never really knew much about it. btw I have for many years been doing lots of fiber arts stuff a lot of plant dyeing with mainly fabrics but not much with paper. There is a beautiful blush pink you can get from Avocado pits but just blown away by this tutorial!!!!
Oh I love it. Your knowledge from the other types of arts and crafts will be amazing applied to paper! Oh the things you can do!! I have dyed with avocados and pits before, and I will be doing it again :)
They have turned out beautifully. I tried to dye with onion skins but got a more pale version and I now realise I didn't simmer for long enough. I'm definitely going to try this again as the colours are stunning. Thank you for showing us x
