      My type writer paper breaks up but artist paper doesn't. I don't submerge the type writer paper I squeeze the tea bag over it which works great.

      I do mine in 45-min to 1 hour from start to finish- done n dried. An hour (about as many or more pages). I don’t have three days to dye paper 🤦🏻‍♀️

      I came here to say this very thing! 😂 Natasha, you're my kind of woman. When my daughter was 16 she asked me "mammy, do we have an ironing board?" and I replied "Yes, it's the digital piano stand that you practiced piano on for 4 years!" She had seen me use many tools over the years but an iron wasn't one of them.😂 I'm new to journalling and your tutorials are great. I've been using tea and coffee to stain new wood in household projects for years but as I move to paper crafts it's great to learn from paper masters such as yourself. I did a small first batch blind without all of the logistics figured out in advance (drying space in particular). Also, as I used an older roasting tin, the solution became grayer as it began to oxidize with the surface of the metal, delivering a gray/green hue that I didn't care for. Second time I used a newer tin with better results. Fantastic to see your process in particular to see that sheets can be par dried in small bundles and separated midway through. Your channel is great for 'keeping it real' compared to some creators that have studios as big as a small house. Once again, thank-you for sharing your talent. You set a high bar for us newbies but it's great to have a quality standard to aim for. 🙏

    I tried doing this with some fruit tea bags. The water from them was a glorious dark pink so I thought I'd get some fabulous results from that. However, the colour seemed to oxidise in the air and all the paper came out grey! Not really a problem as they are lovely, but very unexpected. If you see my previous comment about drying the teabags on watercolour paper to make stains, I did this with the fruit tea bags and got gorgeous grey stains which I then doodled over in black. I am absolutely thrilled with the result of these! The actual teabags did stay pink and once I'd taken out the tea, I ended up with some nice pink teabag paper to use in projects.

    thank you so much for this video....
    I use: coffee, black tea, green tea... and agree, time give different shade...
    other what use for experiment is: ground cinnamon, ground turmeric, ground smoked paprika, balsamic vinegar, vanilla essence.... cocoa powder........all of them mixed with hot water.... all give me more or less colors.......same with smell like balsamic or vanilla or cinnamon= love it so delicate......paprika or turmeric very interesting raw smell and pale color.... cocoa give dark brown color much darker like even strong coffee and smell like chocolate, I love this smell......... not satisfaction for me with avocado, but my be use wrong color of skin, have green, probably better is use dark, purpule skin, I do................... great success with water after cook red beetroots, amazing dark red color.........and depends on time have from "burgundy" to pale pink paper........ I LOVE THIS COLOR from beetroots.........................now I collect onion skin and think about red cabbage.....and I'm stack how make any kind of greenish??? ..........

Then I sprinkled it on the paper and added some extra hibiscus and added some weight for a few hours and now letting it dry in the open I think the paper not being flat is all part of the ascetics. OK, so I do not know about my acid level but thanks to you I am learning so I will be placing an order for the strips. You have me excited for making some Christmas gifts and I crochet, knit and embroidery of which I plan on making journals of and using some of those to make journals, can't wait to see what is born from the combination. I'm back to comment because I've now FINALLY got a pretty way to reuse all the pages I've printed for school that I no longer need anymore! I didn't quite have the set up you do... but as I write this I have the whole edge of the lino kitchen hallway covered in we tea-dyed assessment papers.
    I've raided my stash for pages I've watercoloured (primarily for testing colour combinations and mixing triads) and either cut them up to create the beginnings of some tags, or if they were big enough, folded them to add into a journal.
    Further actions from your totally INSPIRING channel, I have dismantled my UNINSPIRING watercolour journal (which was 14 folded sheets of A4, kettle stitch bound with some craft paper), and now those pages are waiting VERY patiently to be bound into a tea-dyed/ watercolour splotched/ magazine raided extravaganza!!!
    I've never felt MORE inspired or capable or empowered to create with what I have!
    This is no shade on how other people do things... but all the pretty stashes people have... I can't afford or justify spending that kind of money on ephemera or fancy supplies.
    YOU, my friend, are the kind of crafter I want to be! Our styles differ somewhat, admittedly- I'm a little less vintage and a little more... uh, pop-y, I guess. But. Dang. Hell. To. The. Yes! Thank you.

    The “neutral” “acidic” and “alcaline” really confused me, could you explain more about the importance of it? Thank you! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    • @TreasureBooks
      @TreasureBooks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I explained everything in the video, but here goes again. Ph level measures alkalinity versus acidity. Water is neutral. Bleach is highly alkaline, coffee is acid. Paper is also already slightly acid. When you add tea or coffee to paper, you make it very acid. Acidity eats through any writing on the page and especially if you place photograps into a journal that has very acidic paper. It takes years for this to happen, and for the writing and photographs to fade, hence why people don't worry about it too much. That is also why a lot of scrapbooking products and paper state "archival" paper, meaning its not acid, it will not fade your photographs. So, adding soda bicarb, which is alkaline, it neutralizes the acid and brings the solution to neutral. I hope this helps

      Thank you so much for the thorough explanation, I understand now that it’s all about preventing the paper, photos, etc to become yellowish over time. Best regards from Canada :)

      @@TreasureBooks WOW! I did not know this. Thanks for sharing your dye methods and educating us on what "archival" means. I'm working on a family tree book and I want it to last, so it's going to be archival papers for all vital documents going forward for me!

    Thank you for answering the questions I wanted to ask :) Would love to see how to dye the purple ones. Usually I use coffee (love the smell...and taste) and hibiscus tea: the tea turns pink and the flowers turn the paper blue afterwards. Love the effect.

    Love the splotch effect. Will have to try that next time. I prefer drying them in the oven as it is sooo much quicker and I can do a lot in a few hours. I like how you had a large pan of the dye first and then added each page one by one. I haven't tried it that way before. Neither have I ever left the paper in for that long. Usually I dye each page one by one and put directly on to the cookie sheet, or, I will take a big chunk of paper and put the whole thing in the pan at once. This leaves a lot of white space as you have said. Sometimes I don't mind that. I have also tried the sprinkle coffee effect - I love that as well. Thanks for sharing your process. Would love to see the onion skin dying process sometime when you have a chance.

    • @TreasureBooks
      @TreasureBooks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Sharon! I think the oven drying process seems to darken the paper more than air drying, so you don't need to leave it in the solution for that long :)

    Oh boy, this was both fun and rather messy at times! I used the following previously used/dried tea bags: Luzianne Cold Brew, Tazo Chai Organic (the "Starbucks" type or brand used - old research, can't remember which it is) and Celestial Seasonings Country Peach Passion. Talk about smelling really good in the kitchen area and house! Probably used too many at one time but for some reason - which now that I'm thinking about it does not make sense, I thought the cold brew would not be so great in hot water. I know, that was a brain cramp moment for sure!
    I covered my table with a split large (black) trash bag, an old beach towel and a portion of a king size t-shirt style sheet, in that order. I had tea dyed fabrics before and gotten them white again but this time, the lace and doilies I used seem to refusing to release the tea. Yes, I have been using cold water rinses. I'm hesitant to use bleach and have used a little tiny bit of liquid Oxy whitener. Probably have to use more.
    While typing this, I needed to be sure I am on the right video and oh my gosh, my papers look like yours! The white copy paper I used was a little thin and I thought it was going to fall apart but it didn't. (AmazonBasics 20lb wt.) Some tore from the weight of the water as I pulled them out of the pan but I used more care and rushed them to the table dripping wet! I dyed some notebook paper, a cool envelope, book pages, writing journal pages, some cheap paper towels which I thought surely would just come apart. They didn't! How cool is that!! They soaked up the last portion of brew I had in the pan and looked like chocolate iced cake sitting there in the pan. I also soaked a very used manila file folder. As if it needs tea dying, but it's pretty cool anyway.
    I probably should have waited on doing the second round of papers but I didn't. I ended up putting old 1970 orange terry towels down on top of the first batch and rotating things as soon as I could. Next time, one batch at a time. You aren't kidding when you say it takes a lot of space. And, I have cleaned up lots of tea-drops on the tile floor, thankfully it's tile ... mostly missed the grout!
    I loved doing this ... I'm wondering how to do the journaling part though as it seems I keep failing at other things so far. Sometimes, it feels like I have already been there done that b/c I've watched videos!!
    I hope you don't mind my lengthy comment - thought you'd like to know how my journey in this went. I did take quite a few pictures along the way. I'm hoping to do something with those. I used to blog several years ago, had several blogs. It's going through my head to maybe do something like that. I seem to do better at the digital stuff so far!! Got lots of images I want to put into a journal etc., etc.
    Thank you for your videos. Always enjoy them!! Even when my attempt doesn't work (see my comment on the cereal box liner fusing. ha ha?)
    Oh, yeah, I saved one of the Country Peach Passion tea bags, little bitty thing actually. And I see you've got a link to a video for what you do with those - your comment about doing something with them made me save the one that busted. Or did I tear it on purpose? I don't remember. And, now that it's dry, yes, I can think of some uses. But I'll be over to see what you do with the ones you save! Thanks again!!

    Hello Natasha, ty for all ur tips/tricks for paper tea dying.
    Now I have the craziest question ❓
    We all kinda know the coffee dyed paper leaves an awesome coffee scent, which I simply LOVE. So here's my new question, have you ever considered or tried other scented dyed paper? Maybe a scent that could be a SOFT floral, or a nature type scent, like maybe a scent from those liquid plug in scents. I realize it's a crazy idea 💡, but could it be a possibility? Thanx Natasha for reading my message.

    This stack of stained paper❤️❤️❤️❤️ I know how this feels. It’s everything. In summer a always dye my paper in the garden and it’s dry in no time. Sometimes I have to chase some papers through the yard but that’s ok. I sometimes iron them, but they loose some of the crispyness after that. I love love love a big stack of freshly dyed paper. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 keep on with your art and greetings from 🇩🇪
