(I mean the type which just add subdivisions without smoothing .. like the second cube)

You can right click and subdivide then press Shift + R to repeat last action. Alternatively, subdivide, then in the bottom left open the properties panel and choose how many subdivisions you want to add.

Select an object in object more, then press ctrl + number to add the subdiv modifier with the respective number(up to subdiv lvl 6).
For example, ctrl+3 will give the object subdiv level 3.
