Casement Window Adjustment

Great info, this allowed me to align my window properly so that it opens and closes much easier. Before I completed this adjustment, our very large casement window would require so much force to close it that we would have to purchase new opening mechanism every few years because of the wear and tear on the gear teeth in the opening mechanism. Furthermore, we would need to grab the handle in such a way that we could apply the force. It was crazy! And all this in a new home.
Also, we could only close it just enough so that the locking mechanism could grab onto the window and pull it closed the rest of the way (about 2 inches!). Now when I close the window, it’s a lot easier (although still a little difficult due to the sheer size of the window in the master bedroom - but nothing compared to before) AND the window actually closes without me having to engage the locking mechanism. The lock just pulls it shut that last few millimetres so that the window is completely airtight against the weather stripping.
    Thank you! 😊

Thanks for the tip on the handle. Opened two brand new windows for fresh air and the handle won't sit in its designated place. This simple trick gives me some hope. Stopped after playing with it. Now only if I can find that screw driver....

This helped a lot. I hate casement windows but I will probably keep them awhile longer since adjustments are pretty easy.

Mr. Scott from the original Star Trek series said it the best, "The more they overthink the plumbing the easier it is to stop up the drain."

Good video! HAHA I was confused how to open my window because I am new here in Canada and the windows are like that. In my house in the Philippines, it was not like this😂

I just measured with a caliper on my window, and it's 11mm. The nut thingy is round with two flat surfaces for the wrench and made of soft brass. The wrench must fit snugly.

Very good info; I recently had two replacement casement windows installed. One window operates properly while the other window doesn't fully close properly until the lock is engaged. I had a tech over and he did the adjustments shown in your video which resulted in a slight improvement. The bottom portion closes properly, but the top portion still has about a 1/4-inch space between the sash and the window frame; after the lock is engaged, the window will close. Is this window beyond adjustment and should it be replaced?

I had the same problem right now because of the initial way it was put it. Had to take it out and put it in again. For example, if the windows are opened when the frame is fixed in the wall then, your windows might not close properly. That's my two cents. Best of luck!

I am using a 3/8 wrench, but it does not grip. I have also tried a 7/16 wrench suggested in a different video which is too large. What size wrench can I use?

Go with metric and it might be 15mm wrench.

For my window, I had a thin 10mm which was tight enough to do the adjustment , but the fit was slightly loose. So, either a 9mm (which I did not have - 8mm I had and it was too small) or the SAE size between 9mm and 10mm may work.

Casement windows are the worst, most stupid type of window ever designed. Completely user-unfriendly, prone to mechanical failure. I f*cking hate this type of window. The windows in my house are extremely old and I can't f*cking open them.
