      Good video but not everybody buys pre-made curtains, drapes or panels. I make mine from scratch to save money and cleaning costs because the cleaning costs over 10 years can be a killer! I look for fabric that can be washed and dried in a laundry dryer and deliberately preshrink it. Buy 1/4 yard first and test it out to see if this will work and to be able to accurately buy enough fabric. Use your coupons when buying fabric like this! You can save 40% - 50% per cut of fabric this way. If you are ambitious and get a patterned fabric don't forget about taking into account the repeats which means you'll need more fabric. There is a lot more measuring when you go for a patterned fabric versus a plain one. I iron the preshrunk fabric, fold it lengthwise and HANG it on a very sturdy hanger for DAYS. This allows the fabric to stretch because this is what it will do anyway hanging in the window. So you are pre-washing, drying, ironing and hang stretching the fabric prior to sewing it. I have used XL cotton/polyester sheets as drapery liners to protect the drapes/curtains from sun fading for natural fabrics. I preshrink the XL sheets but no ironing or hanging is necessary for them. Unless you need complete darkness this works out well but adds considerable weight. Factor that in because the curtain rod is going to have to take that weight and you don't want it ripping out of the wall! Once the header is completed hang the curtains and measure to see where the hem goes and pin at the corners. Take it down and put in your hem. Measure, measure, measure and don't put in a skimpy hem as the hem helps the curtain/drape hang properly. There is a way to machine hem. I happen to be old school and hem by hand which I think looks better. I also use the best thread I can find which is Gutermann polyester coated thread. It has never let me down. As a general run of thumb, line organic fabrics (cotton, linen, rayon, silk) from sun because they can fade badly over time, organic fabrics go in the kitchen because oil sticks to synthetics and can't be removed by regular washing and organic/synthetic fabrics can go on the windows in the rest of the house except the bathroom where an organic fabric can rot if the humidity is too high. And never, ever use acetate fabric as it is difficult to sew (slippery) and cannot be machine washed. It's a nightmare! My curtains are made to float above the floor. All of this sounds harder than it is. Start simply making a curtain with non-patterned fabric on a smaller window and see how it goes!

    I moved my curtains up in my livingroom about 2.5" down from the ceiling and it looks amazing. It definitely makes my ceilings look taller and I find the break puddle i have now, instead of the major puddle I had before, looks relaxed, cozy and elegant. Changing the placement of the rod made a huge difference to the room.

    I *personally* HAAAAATE the puddled look. I think Kiss and Float look so so much better.
    I know they aren't considered as classy or trendy, but I think they look more elegant.

      @MaisieB9103 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree. They look sloppy
      and father loads of dust &
      let hair.Personally, before I
      knew it was a trend, I took
      it as a sign of laziness ! It
      doesn't take much time to
      them them or to have it
      done by a tailor.

    • @sodapopjam
      @sodapopjam ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I personally don't like any fabric touching the floor, they gather so much dust, and they get dirty from liquids (drinks, animal pee, rain coming in from the window then you forget to close).
      I used to have a dust ruffle... putting it on was a pain, I had to wash it pretty often or I'd get allergies, and I used to hit my toes as a lot as I walked past the ruffle cuz you can't really see where the box starts.
      I'm sad short curtains are considered ugly. I don't like the sloppy look of these overly long ones :( Guess I'm weird.

      I agree. There’s nothing elegant about curtains dragging on the floor ruining the neat appearance of the pleats. Unless maybe you have a formal room with velvet drapery that you don’t actually ever touch covering a window you never use.

    Sooo, I had already purchased some curtains that was not wide enough for my windows...thanks to you, I came up with the idea of buying the same panel and doubling up on each side. As a result , this gave a more elegant look. 👌

    Almost daily I fit curtains, railing, and rods. I can add this to the advice given.
    If you tend to open and close the curtains daily; Do float.
    If your curtains are not a very dark color; Do float.
    If you have children running about; do float.
    If you have pets in your house; do float.
    If you really want to wipe the floor with your curtain; Do puddle.

    Recently redecorated my bedroom, bought new voiles (bit too much puddling) and used existing curtains (nice puddling) that fit the new gold theme perfectly. To hang the voiles, I used a bamboo rod and on the brackets for the main pole I used one screw and one screw-in hook to mount the brackets and sit the bamboo rod in the hooks. It's quite a neat look.

    This video is a life saver for me I have a new build flat & been through so many different curtain rail for them to keep falling down or braking and just by you mentioning a tension rod has changed that I can now have a pole put up in my bedroom which will probably stay put now. i didn't know they did them for curtains too but knew about the shower version my window is 315cm wide so I'm going to browse on amazon to see what I find. Massive Thanks👍🏿💯

    I hang curtains often in my work. One thing I would add to how you said the rod should be 4-6” wider than the window frame is that it depends upon the size of the window. If you have a wide window but only go out 6” then much of the stacked panel will still cover the glass. You want your stack to be near the edge of the glass with a slight overlap. Rule of thumb is the stack back is 1/4-1/3 window width. So a 100” window could have 25-33 stack, split with over 12 on each side (for a working panel).

      Great point! But I'm confused as to where you should place the curtain bracket for a wide window. Other sites also say you should place the bracket about 6" from the outside edge of the window frame to allow plenty of natural sunlight. But to your point, the large stack would cover more of the glass. My window is 88" wide. Can you help me? Thanks!

    So glad I found your channel. Really useful information. I find often the Windows are neglected and the complete a living space so much a lovely expression of our own styles. I find it difficult though sometimes. I find it looks awesome from the inside and the outside view does not reflect the same and all rooms have different styles and colors. We own a ranch home and I have planters on the outside of the upper Windows to somewhat bring some cohesiveness to the over all look and front entrance panels too give me heartburn...lol it seems some days as if I let my husband dress the Windows ..lol Thank you for sharing and if you have any wisdom for my dilemma I would love to read about it...and I love your little assistant. Have a lovely weekend. Diane and family.

      @PoshPennies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Diane, thanks for your comment! Cohesion is definitely important in home decor and it's especially tough when you have to consider inside AND outside! Your dilemma is a common problem and a lot of building bylaws actually "enforce" the occupants to have window treatments that are all solid white/off-white so that everything looks uniform from the outside.
      Instead of needing to swap out all your curtains to be white, the alternative is to line just the outer part of your drapes (the part facing the street) in white/off white. That way the parts facing the outdoors will all look the same but your interiors will still have the colored drapes. I would also recommend trying to stick with just one or two curtain styles if you can.
      I think adding the planters is a great idea too, make sure they are all matching and ideally with matching plants in them, too (again - helps with cohesion!). Hope this helps, take care!

    Puddling never seemed like a good idea to me. It looks like you bought curtains off the shelf and never bothered to hem them...like wearing pants that drag on the ground in back and bunch up on the top of your shoe in the front. Just my opinion.

    Other you tubers, such as Robeson design, echo your thoughts. She mostly styles curtains closer to the ceiling, it looks good. I like the floating look, having pets it helps with the cleaning. I have shortened curtains a lot of times and found if the heading is pencil pleat , not rings, then it’s simpler to rip the heading tape off the top and shorten from the top. You maintain the proffessional finish at the hem , mitred corners can be difficult to do.
