A California-Style Crisis: 'People Are Just Free to Destroy Their Lives Out in the Open'

  • Drugs, crime, and homelessness are taking over much of San Francisco - although billions are being spent toward a solution, the city's problems are compounding.
A recent report from the University of California San Francisco shows that California accounts for one-third of all homeless people in the U.S.
"People are just free to destroy their lives out in the open," said one local. "Crack, meth - I see it seven days a week."

Democrats do better on economics than Republicans. All the major recessions and depressions are caused by GOP administrations. Newsom isn't perfect but we had the GOP in office the solution would be to just throw everyone in prison. The GOP complains but would block all policies that would end this like universal healthcare, public housing, jobs programs, etc.

I was in Berkeley in 90 and ran into so many homeless on the streets begging for help. I never lasted 10 min every morning for money I couldn't afford to give. It was like Chicago 10x the transient and actually cleaner than Chicago at the time. I would not hit NORCAL today for any reason. A dook peppered street with great weather. The US is getting dystopian for the "less than" upper-class every day. EAT THE RICH. It is so heartwarming knowing that gated communities allow for our policy makers of this country. THEY SURE KNOW BETTER THAN US. At least how to bleed the people to make it to where they are. US and them.

At the very least, I now grasp the concept of leverage.
Creating wealth and financial freedom isn't as tough as many people believe. Building wealth and remaining financially stable indefinitely is a lot easier with the appropriate information. Participating in financial programs and products is the only true approach to make a high income and remain affluent indefinitely.

Most people simply enter the foreign exchange market without comprehending matters like this. The first stage in building money is determining your goals and risk tolerance, which you may do on your own or with the assistance of a financial counselor who works with a verified Finance agency. And also you can learn the facts about saving and investing and create a clear plan, you should be able to acquire financial security over time and enjoy the benefits of income management.

I totally agree with you! I'm in Oregon, and downtown Portland is a off limits zone for us, same as se & ne Portland. The town has become a place of lawlessness. Lots of shootings now. The theives get picked up, spend a day or so in jail, even car theives, then released b4 their court dates? Then the cycle repeats. The Decriminalization of drugs in Oregon with measure 110, has ruined this city. So now drug addicts are showing up from other states, to take advantage of free camping, free hand outs from the state, and shoplifting with basically no consequences, it's a catch & release system currently. The laws need to be changed, the G O V could fix it, but for some odd reason they're not doing anything, and they have funding? It seems to be trending this way in different towns all over USA. Maybe this is part of their plans for their N E W W O R L D O R D E R aka or der out of cha o s? Everyone will be so sick of whats going on in their cities, they'll want to conform to their new plan. Pretty soon smart cities will be popping up all over, then cashless society will start up M O T B. Everyone that submits will be scanning their skin to pay for stuff. Time to pray, repent & follow the bible, not follow man made religion in the G O V

This was me six-and-a-half years. I'm a child of two addicted parents and also a Bay area oakland-alameda native. Unfortunately I picked up those habits and I was an avid drug user on the streets of Oakland and West Oakland from the ages of 19 to 23. I've encountered numerous dangerous situations being homeless and a young woman on the streets. I had to get out of California to get clean from drugs. In my opinion if there is any glimmer of hope for homeless that are addicted, they need to get up and away from Cali cause right now it's a cesspool breeding ground for drugs.

So, if there is to be a war on drugs then anyone caught with it gets a bullet in the forehead. It's called summary justice.

Over the last 15 years I have done my own informal survey of homeless people that I have encountered. My survey has included all of the major West Coast cities from Seattle to San Diego. The majority of the people that I spoke with said they have no intention or motivation to leave their current situation of homelessness. Some of them even told me, in a bragging manner, that they are living the perfect lifestyle. They don't have to worry about taxes etcetera. Everything they need is given to them. Why would they want to join the status quo?

If the former great singer Mr Tony Bennett is alive & well today and relive the song he made famous titled: "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", he could have suffered a heart attack. Seeing all these fall and depravity of men and women everyday into homelessness, addiction, drugs, alcohol, committing crime and violence is totally not the picture of the famous song.

Total BS!! To identify the happiest cities in America, according to residents, 24/7 Tempo reviewed the happiness score of all 383 metro areas in the U.S. from digital health company Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index. The index measures whether individuals feel a sense of purpose, have supportive relationships, are financially secure, satisfied with their community, and are in good physical health. Sharecare surveyed more than 450,000 U.S. adults, concentrating on these five areas of individual well-being, as well as analyzed more than 600 elements of social determinants of health from additional data sources. The West and Rocky Mountains regions, specifically California and Colorado, appear to be the states with the most cities where residents feel happy. The happiness of residents in the SAN FRANCISCO area - the winner for a second year in a row - is bolstered by strong performance in several categories, including housing and transportation, food access, and financial stability, according to Sharecare.

@@bombaybeach208 San Francisco enables it, and even when I was homeless and addicted 10 years ago my friends were disappearing down to SF and trying to get me to come down there and be homeless and addicted with them where anyone can just become another nobody in a sea of lost souls. Free needles and easy-to-get drugs. It's a homeless junkie's haven compared to most everywhere else where you'll get busted for being high just walking down the street, which is why people flock there who want to just be homeless and strung out or spun out. When an entire city decides that 'caring' is the solution, everyone's gonna come looking for those handouts from across the nation to get away from wherever they're at that doesn't tolerate their behavior. All SF has to do is stop tolerating it. It used to be illegal to be in possession of drugs, or paraphernalia, or even under the influence. Now they literally just let it run rampant because forcing people to dry out in a jail cell so that they can re-evaluate themselves, their priorities, and their purpose in life might hurt their feelings! Not to mention, god forbid SF builds a new jail to house criminals in. If you don't have anywhere to put people who break the law to keep them off of the streets then it doesn't matter whether or not you have a police force.

As Milton Friedman said, people should be free enough to drug themselves into death if they choose to -- so long as they do not affect the liberty of other citizens in the process. These thug/drug-hugging city & state policies end up affecting the safety of other citizens in public spaces, so they violate that liberty-respecting axiom and should be repealed.

The services in SF for the homeless are some of the best in the world, which is why so many homeless people end up there. But providing free meals and services when what the city gets in return is cholera-conditions and garbage dumps for streets, that makes no sense because you reward not just bad but illegal behavior.
