Here's a little update from Phoenix:
Vickie Eichelberger has obtained her papers and has been living in her own flat since October 2023. Peter Moya also found affordable accommodation in early 2024. Unfortunately, his faithful companion, Superman, died in November 2023.
Thank you all for watching and commenting.

Joe Biden is paying off 2 billion dollars in student loans for gender studies students when that money could go to these older Americans
Yes, that little dog was his companion. I wrote a comment that I was surprised the shelter allowed his dog. So sad.
His dog looked just like mine. Poor little guy. I'm so very sorry for his loss. this life we live is so unfair.

Messing around in the world keeps American defense contractors in business.
Secure the border. Stop illegal immigration. Deport as many as you can. Maricopa County spends $3.2 billion each year on 400,000 illegals. Think what $3.2 billion could do for a homeless population of 9,000.
Oh great America, your owners are assh*les. Like George Carlin said" They don't care about you".
How can America send Billions of dollars to other countries yet do nothing to help the vulnerable. This isn’t right.🇺🇸
The U.S. does lots to help poor people. The inflation after the pandemic has made the situation nearly impossible.
@kerrynight3271 inflation is the expansion of the money supply and only washinton has the money printer...government is the problem
The US will help you if you are an illegal immigrant or if you have kids. The US doesn't care about old people.
What makes you think America does nothing to help the vulnerable?

Veterans should NEVER be homeless. No one should but especially those who fought for this country.
Vets who were in wars .
@@stormyweather8798 What is that supposed to mean? Have you ever been in the military? Do even know what kind of sacrifices you have to make?
So, some vets who delivered packages or worked in the kitchen SHOULD be taken care of when they get out of the service. My niece is an Airforce nurse but knows that she will always have to take care of herself and her family.
I thank Her for her service and sacrifice@@colleenpeck6347
They fought for property and power that benefits very few people. What does 'fight for your country' even mean? It's a meaningless phrase. Nationalism is opium for the masses, it's a tool of oppression that only serves to keep the little people believing that an arbitrary in-group means something, that they have more in common with their own oppressors than with workers from other countries.
I have been homeless for awhile now in Phoenix. I work full time. The cost of living has blown up, but companies refuse to adjust to take care of their employees. My company which claims compassion as a hallmark of their core beliefs, will pay so little that I cannot afford to qualify to even rent a home. Greed is the problem. Greedy landlords, Greedy bosses. Greedy Country.
Landlords have to pay bills too.
@stryfetc1471 yeah, duh. We ALL have to pay bills. The difference is I use my labor to pay my bills. I don't leach off either peoples labor to pay my bills like a landlord does.
@tomarkhos1
Renting apartments will be a thing until it's not. So you're just talking nonsense, you will always have to pay for a place to stay.
Not if you crossed the border illegally, than Biden gives you everything for free, food, clothes, shelter, phones, etc.
Don't always blame the landlord. I'm still trying to wrap my head around our home of 60 years has been accessed a valuation that has increased 10 times the original value with absolutely nothing done to it. If property taxes double or triple...your rent will too. Just like you suddenly get $20 to make a hamburger. Your hamburger will cost $16. You are right the real virus is greed. That will destroy us.
This is so scary. I bought a small house before retirement instead of renting and now I think it was the smartest decison I ever made.
Not if you lived under rent control like me in Canada. My rent is pegged to inflation and utilities are all included. I won't tell you the price beause you'd all want to kill me.
I'm very glad for you we got a 1,000 sq. foot hoe 30 years ago and it is too big for us now that we are retired. Funny how most Americans want such a huge house
It was the best decision.
All it takes is loss of your livelihood to lose these mortgages too coz you have to pay property taxes to the man even if fully paid for.

Drugs ? Were the problem w/ u ?
Same. Was last homeless back in 2016. Medical bills garnished my paychecks & I had no choice but to give up my house & move into a shite travel trailer! I did so on my own BEFORE I ended up getting evicted & was living in my car for 2 months, & worked like 80 hrs a wk in a Nursing Home as a CNA . I put my stuff into storage. Moving into the trailer saved me around 500 bucks pm. 500 bucks I just didn't have, no matter how hard I worked. I also had a car payment. It's true. It can happen to ANYONE! 🤷♀️

I think people should also seriously look into investing of some kind. Something that brings money back to your pocket, real estate, stocks, whatever can bring back value to their bank account rather than draining it. Obviously investing has its risks but so does just having money in depreciating assets or straight up liabilities.

The median rent is 2000. A lot of financial professionals especially the one I work with Samuel Peter Descovich agree that one should not spend more than 30% of their gross income on rent. That means you need to make a minimum of about $80,000. Interesting considering the median income is $54,000.

That increase in rent should not be allowed. There should be more regulation on housing and food.
Government should help citizens first with housing assistance. Based on income, housing assistance should be paid to landlords, especially for seniors and veterans. Citizens should be able to apply for housing assistance prior to being evicted. It might save everyone money in the long run.

Our insurance would not cover the surgery until her rib punctured her heart which was 1/4" away. Shriner's of St Louis did her operations which cost 5.5 million dollars. There were so many other things that added up including transportation to and from Kansas, audiologist blood which the red cross charged us $1500 x 6 a pint up front for each operation, x rays, doctors at home, time lost from work. My antiques store was closed more than open so we depended on my husband's salary. It was all too much for him to handle including also having an autistic son in special education so he left us. When he left I was unable to pay the mortgage and insurance on both my home and business. The kids and I got a one room studio apartment. I finally had a nervous breakdown and now we are all living in a studio sized public housing tower. My 1995 Jeep Cherokee was stolen so we are riding buses everywhere. Friends, remember that some people are homeless because of life circumstances outside of their control, not all are criminals, drug addicted, mentally ill, or vagrants disinterested in working. Many had prosperous and productive careers before disaster overturned their lives. My mother used to say to me as a child, when she saw a troubled soul in the street, “There but for the grace of God go I.” Appreciate the blessings you have, even if your life is not exactly the way you would like. Pray for others. Help where you can.
in Finland they give the homeless a solo apartment and also get them help with their problems. It gives them a breathing space to sort themselves out and start again. They have found that it not only gets people off the street, gives them some dignity, it is cost effective compared to not doing anything but provide day time shelters so the old problems continue.
The rent increase is real. Just before I moved into my new house my apartment announced they were raising the rent from $950 to $1400 a month. I could afford that because that was what my future mortgage payment was going to be but I ended up having to go month to month because Covid led to supply shortages that indefinitely delayed my build and I had no clue when it would be done, the homebuilder wouldn't give me a closing date so I couldn't sign a long term lease. Month to month shot up from &1450 a month before covid to $2150 a month. I ended up blowing through all my savings to cover rent and I just barely moved in as I was down to my last $100 that wasn't tied up in the down payment for the house, closing costs, etc. I was actually contemplating living out of my car in the Costco parking lot next to the school I worked at before I finally received the news that house would be completed
How awful. Dam l.l.'s.
The takeaway that I see from this is that entering retirement as a renter is very dangerous. Of course, if one is well off and can easily afford the rent, then no problem.
You either need to be rich or have nothing in retirement, everyone else suffers. At 62 you can move into assisted living and they pay for everything, but you can't have anything, no assets really at all.
Limited supply means waiting lists for subsidized living most places.
Even if you have a paid off house, property tax and insurance can cause ruin if you are in areas that have raised property tax so high it's impossible to pay it.
WHAT assisted living?????????? You are wrong. Assisted living costs 12,000 a month! Do some research. Stop making things up.@@unpopularopinion9831

Imagine about 30 thousand people all at the same time trying to find shelter,it's an experience I would never wish anyone. After 4 years and finally being able to find a permanent home, whenever I see someone less fortunate I do what ever I can to help such as getting food, a cold drink and maybe a simple conversation because I will never forget those very difficult times!

Sad state. No one should be homeless
I am a baby boomer and it saddens me to see this going on to all the people who made America strong Vietnam Veterans etc. Shame on our government!!!! I and my husband are Veterans as well. If it weren't for my smart husband leaving the city and moving into a rural town outside of El Paos,Tx. we would be in same predicament. We own our home free and clear and we get free health care times are tough this economy has me worried
Thank you for your service.
#1 Don't live in a city. #2 panhandle 20 bucks for a survival kit with axe and Firestarter at Walmart and build a shelter in the woods. #3 We are not animals we can survive in the woods easy, almost all small towns have a free food bank.
Me too at 59 years old. What a shame!
This is just the world that your generation created and voted for.
You are blaming the wrong government. Putin, Xi and others have worsened the global problem.
When working in Montana I filed for disability. My lower back is terrible shape. I was told within a year I would have it. It took longer and my money run out. One Sunday after church I packed up my things and went to a shelter in the town nearby. I fared better than most. Some people had no transportation or anything. It took another six months until everything was approved. There's alot if the population who's one month between having a house and homelessness. Thanks for sharing.

@@joeysworldsewer your welcome. Thanks.
@pedenmk too much of this country is one paycheck, one chronic health diagnosis, or one car accident away from losing their entire livelihood.
This is the greatest country in the world, we have no excuses for not helping the needy. Adverse hardship should nullify debts, especially medical debts, and seniors on fixed income exempt from rent hikes.
So GET a DESK JOB! Like a HUNDRED MILLION Americans HAVE! STOP FREELOADING!!!!

I’m from Casa Grande, AZ and I was shocked to see how much homelessness has increased. 10, 15 years; there was little-to-no homeless people, now it’s a common sight. 😢
Homelessness is common in America now. Wages have not kept up with the cost of living. And some of these people have drug or mental health issues. It's really sad
I don't think that there's a city in usa without homeless any more. Recently I was in Boise Idaho which is not big city and it's somehow wealth place and I saw a block with homeless people.😢

“How’s it possible for homeowners in phoenix or Arizona to increase rent that quickly?”
“We as the city of Phoenix are helping to create new affordable housing, we fund new developments constantly, my team just bought a hotel to convert into affordable housing for over 55s who are on low income”
Damn, the city of phoenix doesn’t care at all for seniors or vets.
I can’t watch this. I became homeless 9 years ago but I was able to get assistance and got off the streets into apartment. But I live at the mercy of my landlord. If my rent goes up too much i’ll Be out of the streets again. I am 68
Dont count on Section 8/Hud housing Authority. These people are heartless
This is so sad. May the Lord God almighty bless and protect these beautiful people.🥺😢😢
Justa Center is a fabulous organization. If you feel moved to help them. I left Phoenix but still love the city and people.
Once ya fall into a hole it’s very hard to climb back out
Growing up middle class decades ago, people could screw up several times and still crawl back out. It's not like that anymore, especially when the screwing up involves drugs.
Gotta pull yourself up by your bootstraps, no hand outs, work hard, etc etc
it is?
I am 69 and not far from that situation. Things are too expensive and government is a lie
Homeless at 90???? I can't imagine how hard that must be???
This is terrible. Not only do I worry about my grandmother who's in her late '80s now, but I also worry about my father who will be 63 in March. Corporate greed is the reason why so many Americans are facing homelessness now even some who are younger. These private real estate companies are buying up apartment complexes across the country and overcharging more than what these places are worth even if they're in a bad area. It's unfair to people who earn less. I myself have a developmental disability and was pretty much screwed over early on in my teens and early 20s by a vocational rehab program that was supposed to help me find me a permanent job. I'm just getting my life together. I decided to eventually get my passport and leave the US for good. I earn money online now. By the time I reach my dad's age, I could end up on the streets. That's something I don't want especially after seeing my mom experience homeless due to her mental illness.
My rent was about $700. Then the boom. Over three or four years, by the end of 2019, it rose to over $1,200. And it was headed up. I moved to Arkansas.
Been looking of moving to central time zone north of red river and east to Appalachia!
@stephenyoung2742 Arkansas is very beautiful and it truly has four seasons, which I am enjoying. But the pace of life is definitely slower.
She didn't answer the question about preventing rent increases. She avoided it. Which is what's driving a lot of people to homeless status. Rent maximizers. They don't care how much they raise the rent as long as they have someone else that will pay it.
Don't you remember just a couple years ago when landlords were NOT allowed to evict because of the "C" disease.
*Lots* of lowlifes simply stopped paying rent knowing they couldn't be evicted.
One idea to counter that is if landlords raise rents that dramatically, a dramatic increase in property taxes on that property should also apply. That new property tax revenue can then be used to help at-risk people, who can't afford these new rent increase, pay the new rental fees.
Most property tax goes to schools. I should know b/c 76% of the hideously high property tax I'm forced to pay goes to the schools.@@Wasserkaktus
Maybe the reason the rents are increasing as fast as they are is BECAUSE the government is increasing the taxes. I have one rental house and its in a decent area so I am blessed with good renters now. BUT my last renters DESTROYED my house, and caused $6,000 in damages. So being a landlord is not all fun and games. And when covid hit, many states allowed renters to NOT pay rent even though they could. BUT the landlord still had to pay the government taxes and insurance costs. The rent I receive is part of my retirement income, most landlord have less than 4 units and need that to survive too. @@Wasserkaktus
@backnu BINGO! Yep, she definitely avoided the question, which is the proverbial "elephant in the room", being the actual root cause of homelessness for a LOT of seniors and working class people.
Rent here in NSW Australia is $3000+ per month and that's just a standard 3/4 bedroom house . Most young ones live at home with their parents "like my daughter & partner and toddler" because of rising rent prices. The Australian dream of owning your own home is non existent these days unless you have a wealthy family or work yourself and your partner to death everyday, the deposit needed is hundreds of thousands of dollars.Just paying the extremely high rent it's a struggle to live and save enough deposit
A very sad and compelling documentary that, reflects the pervasive homelessness epidemic in the States and those, that, are unfortunately, forced to face it😔 I have a deep passion and love for North America (since I began travelling there in 2018 and was also, homeless myself long ago in a period of my troubled youth) but I have witnessed the decay of the metropolitan cities within the USA and the increasing crisis of national homelessness and find it shocking that, such a rich and magnificent country would allow their population (especially, the elderly, disabled or, the veteran's that sacrificed so much for their country) to suffer to such a degree without offering the supportive solutions that, the government are more than capable of subsidising. Thank god for the charitable organisations that, are fighting so tirelessly to make a difference. It is a very heart-breaking situation and I hope that, the people who featured in this film found the stability, comfort and supportive help they need and deserve

We have that problem in Sweden too. There need to be put in place some possibility for these people to find a room mate to share rent with. Some connection center where people can meet and connect. Rather go together and live 2 or even 3 people in a home than being homeless.
Brilliant idea, and simple .this is heart breaking.💙uk
Didn't know even Sweden was so severe with homelessness.
Good idea, unfortunately our government doesn't care... most countries would mobilize a social services agency to facilitate a program such as you suggested 🤷♀️
If it were friends living together.. Strangers won't work. Too many character flaws and addictions.
In the 80s and 90s roommate service agencies were common. I lived with roommates in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Sydney.

Where you end up depends on you. If you do drugs where do you think you'll end up???? Lol. It's call choices.

@@frauditorreaper Thank you! Even though I'm always neat, tidy & ultra hygienic. Took showers at least 5 days a week during homelessness. When I looked at people's faces they seemed so well nourished and pampered to me, although they're just regular people, that's because they have a shelter. My paradigm (the way I saw the world) was compromised which was further depressing. I probably looked awful during those years, hardly employable. Right now I feel like I don't even have to sell myself, I can get hired easily. But when I was homeless, I couldn't get a job. Don't get me wrong I don't judge a book by it's cover myself, but unfortunately that's how I witnessed it that people perhaps subconsciously judged me by the way I appeared & adequate trust couldn't be established... @@joeysworldsewerFlorida is getting expensive AF too - have you seen Orlando rents lately? The major cities in Florida all have burgeoning homeless populations too
@flanagamer I'll be honest man, I have a decent enough job and property to my name which means I'm kind of immune to the rent situation right now. Rent is high in Orlando, but it has been for a while. There's affordable places to live all over, just not in as trendy of places as the major metros. My fellow Gen Z will complain about the rent, I just quit my lease, bought some land in the middle of the sticks and put a manufactured home on it. came out in 2007 when i was just 18 to live with family i had in az. In just the last few years, rents have skyrocketed.
