    Love it! As a black belt in Japanese Jiu-jitsu/Shotokan Karate and self-defense instructor myself, I can totally stand behind your straight to the point advice. It's in fact refreshing to see this sense of situational awareness and realism instead of the all-in Hollywood action some self-defense gurus adopt.

    Nice video. In my younger, foolish days I would always raise my open hands and state, "I dont wanna fight" while closing the distance to my opponet. Also bringing my hands closer. Then move my left hand to distract his eyes and pop with my right. Worked pretty well. Practice making a fist fast, make sure and tuck ur little thumbs in lest they get broken. Also look how a man stands naturally, if his knees are slighty bent and one foot slightly infont of the other, chances are he knows how to fight. But honestly avoid fights, like the man says.
    Because You will either end up in the hospital or jail, or both.

    People forget, when the predator has friends, his confidence is 200%…as he tries to intimidate you, instead of answering back, shut up & swallow your ego…asses your surroundings for sucker punches, if there is possibility of this, calmly step back with body language showing you ain’t scared…not worth it to end with a concussion. If it is just one predator, then this video applies

  • @jeffyoung60
    @jeffyoung60 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good points. Hollywood has also exploited these pre-sucker punch signs in many a movie fight scene. The pissed off dude momentarily looks to the side, not as a distraction, but to gather up his rage and power for an upcoming sucker punch. Another good non-verbal sign to watch for is the sucker puncher curling in his lower lip almost like he's sucking on it. Making non-verbal signs with the mouth and lips is the sign of a really pissed off guy who plans to deck you with everything he's got in the next two seconds. Sometimes the sucker puncher will make a clenched teeth, widened mouth gesture instead of curling his lips. Notice that mammal predators like dogs, wolves, and felines curl their lips, show their teeth, grimace, et al, before attacking. Humans have kept some of these attack non-verbal gestures from primeval times.
    Again, as Kevin Groat says it, situational awareness and avoidance can prevent you from getting into a sucker punch situation. By the way, why are you provoking some dude into taking a swing at you? You should never be provoking some person into attacking you. Some court jurisdictions take that into account later on if you plead self-defense. Witnesses may come forward, telling the judge you provoked the sucker puncher into taking a swing at you. That will change the whole self-defense scenario in the minds of the judge and jury.
    I know, it happens. Some a$$hole and you get into a mutual insult contest, even though he started it. But he has a much lower emotional thresh hold for taking in insults and soon you see him curling his lips, clenching his fists. When he moves forward the punch is coming. Don't get into an mutual insult contest. A lot of bystanders and his buddies are going to try to goad both of you into a physical altercation for everyone's entertainment.

    I was curious what this would be like, because I grew up in a pretty violent area and got in way too many fist fights as a kid, then joined the Army after school and got in plenty of bar fights lol. Honestly? Join a kickboxing class, maybe something like TKD. I started that when I was 6 years old and live sparring is a really great way to get used to recognizing the body mechanics that go into an attack. With so much repetition, you get used to it and reacting to it becomes instinctual and muscle memory.

    Good advice, however looking at someone's face will distract. Keep distance, fist clinch, but also i focus on the small of the chest. All movements can be calculated by movements of the chest. People can fool you with their eyes, but, all movements can be gauged from chest movements, punches kicks, etc

    My Sifu taught us that one should always strive for a calm outcome and not turn the heat up. But, if one needed to fight, then fight quickly and decisively. His saying was, "any fight lasting over 3 seconds is a sparring match". To possess the confidence to not fight is a power that is hard to learn.

    If an attacker moves to close reaction gap then maintain the gap (I.e. step back) hands up in front of you in a “non-aggressive” pose … however if your back is against a wall and you’ve nowhere to step back to then immediately close the gap further and maybe even level change - and step closer but towards an “exit” - extend through the attack pushing your attacker off to one side and off balance.
    Then you can either turn and fight or make an escape.

    Islanders mainly use the "I can't hear you, come closer" and bam you didn't see it coming. Sometimes they show no signs aka not telegraphing a move. It's hard but it comes with experience being part of a fight or breaking up a fight, the indicators are there.

  • @davidalexander8619
    @davidalexander8619 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unfortunately, even when you are sure that some guy is going to try and put one on you, it is often difficult to determine the exact moment to react and move fully out of the way. have found that sometimes you just have to 'absorb' some of the strike and either use your inertia to completely move out of the direction of attack or to establish your own counter defence move whether it be block, distancing or a strike of your own.
    Over thirty years of martial arts training with good advice by some of the world's top elite and I still managed to get hit in the face by an idiot boxer with a bad temper who refused to move his car so that I could get off my drive. I rolled with the punch (it was a very decent one) and he could not believe that I was still standing. I asked my wife who had run out of the house to call the police despite wanting to hammer him. He ended up in handcuffs and I was able to get my car off my drive. Got to keep calm if you can and remember any training you have.
