I've watched every single one of these religiously every year, but I think THIS was the best of them all. Maybe one day I'll be able to watch it without tearing up, but I rather doubt it. ❤❤❤❤
Gotta keep holiday traditions alive & going,!!! Yes watching this awesone performance by the phenominal Ms. Love on Daves last Christmas show,! Yes, yes again a week before Thanksgiving 2023!!! No one sings this song like Ms Love!!! Happpy Holidays all & early Merry Christmas!!
Also incredible the new & only ever Cher Christmas album features Mr Love & Cher in their 80s & 70s full on brillance, energy like 40 year olds at Rock feller center Christmas tree lighting 2 weeks ago 2023!!!
That is something I miss every xmas eve or the one thing from the Letterman show every year!! I understand she refused to do it for any other show anymore. I wish she would change her mind. So many of us miss her singing her Christmas song. She shouldn't let it die just because Dave stopped his show!!!
@@mazieg7072 She has actually been performing it on The View every year. She is usually on the last show before their Christmas break. There was something so magical when she would perform that song on Letterman but it’s great that she hasn’t let it go just yet.
I used to watch each performance with my mom every year for a number of years. My mom passed 2 months after this last performance on Letterman. Almost 10 years ago!
She recorded the original in the summer of 1963 when she was 19... this is a full 51 years later, you're watching a 70 year old woman who beat Cancer sing this.
One of the best Christmas traditions on TV. I watched Ms. Love perform almost every year on Letterman's Christmas show.....when I heard her, to me it was finally Christmas.
The Letterman Show is gone. I thought the sound on The View was darn good. On Letterman the band grew every year. And I think Letterman had a bigger budget. LOL
The View isn't bad, but what made Letterman second to none was Paul Shaffer and the orchestra recreating Phil Specter's wall of sound for this song each year.
There ARE SOME things that should never, never NEVER end... and Darlene Love singing "Baby Please Come Home" surrounded by Paul Shaffer leading a magnificent band is absolutely one of them!
David Letterman could have 'semi-retired' and done a few specials here and there exactly like Bob Hope did. As it is late night is now a trash dump and I've cut the cord cold hard turkey for quite some time.
I’m here in Dec. 2020. Love this song. 73 yrs old...and I’m still hanging in. May you all have a safe, healthy, joyous holiday...filled with love and peace. Keep hope and gratitude in your heart! 🙏🏻💖
I am literally crying now. This was absolutely the most energetic, heartfelt, soul stirring, damn near Grammy performance of hers EVER! Screw the View... Letterman needs to do an annual Holiday special with her!
Dave knowing that this would be his last time having Darlene on the show, pulled out all the stops to bring us the best rendition of this Christmas treat. Paul Schaffer & the CBS Orchestra replicate "the Wall of sound" to perfection!
Christmas is not the same without this tradition. I miss the Lone Ranger story, the throwing of the football at the meatball tree topper and of course the one and only Darlene Love singing this classic song.
I miss it too. Unfortunately, Jay Thomas passed away and wouldn't be around to throw the football or tell the story, even if Letterman was still on the air.
Strongly doubt will ever see anything like this celebrating Christmas on Colbert or Kimmel..always appreciated how Dave would have shows with focus on the holidays thru out the year. Do miss Dave. Haven’t watched late night talk shows in many years.
I enjoyed how Dave was always a little different. Sometimes, he exposed new talent before they exploded onto the music industry. I remember seeing Adele abt a year before she became really famous.
I use to watch her perform this song every year, and this magnificent lady never ceased to give me chills. This became a Christmas ritual for me, and always makes me think of past Holidays.
I watched this every year, for years. It made me want to visit New York for the holidays..and several years ago I finally got the chance. When I was there with my wife, one night we were in Central Park after the sun went down, and it started to snow real light...just like it does during this performance....and this song came on the speakers at Tavern on the Green. I started crying...and my wife was like "what's wrong"...and I just said...."I can't explain it to you". Thanks Dave and Darlene !!
Please keep coming to New York, Mr. DorkSaysWhat. You're needed. Sooner or later you'll hear the song blasting from someone's apartment in July. Great comment, sir.
I would start googling when Darlene would perform this before Thanksgiving! I would mark the calendar and we all watched. The entire Christmas episode was great! The Lone Ranger story which I tell for Jay Thomas who passed away, and throwing the football at the meatball. Great times!!!

I'd like to take a moment to admire Paul Schaffer is bobbing around like a muppet behind her so into the music. I love how energetic he is. He truly is mothereffing Hermes
I don’t think there is any song that brings as much emotion to me as this one. Darlene Love is absolutely amazing and to think someone at her age can sing like this is inspiring. Every version over the years on Letterman was special in its own way. The 2000 and 2014 versions are my favorite. It’s great she finally gets the respect she deserves.
Every year I have a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit. I always had to work the on holidays and as a kid the household wasn't a pleasant place to be around. However, each year when I pull this video up and watch it, Darlene just puts my head in the correct mind space and a huge smile on my face. I had seen Darlene perform the same song for years on Letterman but her performance on this night was truly special.
