Welcome to the Letterman TH-cam Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. And for those of you who like Miscellaneous, you may very well find some Miscellaneous here.
I was not aware of Darlene's annual tradition of singing this song on Letterman ever year until I stumbled upon a compilation on youtube of every performance she did from 1986 to 2014. I watched every single performance (over an hour and a half) in one sitting. And then afterwards I was recommended this video and I couldn't believe it had just been uploaded for 2023. I love how they came back together 9 years later. I have been in such a roller coaster state of emotions from it all. God bless these people and thank you for this being a wonderful end to my 2023 christmas. I pray they are all still around next year.
What?! OMG - Christmas hasn’t been the same since Letterman left. This is awesome!! RIP Jay Thomas, we’ll miss you and your funniest story ever told. ❤
I hope the whole band is there too.
I know right
The Lone Ranger!!! 🏈🌲🍝
I'm 65 I look forward to that show every year so outstandingly funny with the Lone Ranger story and the perfect spirals. My how time flies
Darlene's still got it!!
What a wonderful Christmas gift!! It's hard to believe Darlene is 82! She's ageless!
82!?! 😲
@ObamaFromKenya That’s unbelievable. I would have never guessed. She looks like the youngest one of the four of them!
"Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" has transitioned from a big spectacular to a family carol sung around the piano.
Darlene, you'll never comprehend how much we Love you. You bring us home. And Paul made that keyboard sound like a sax!
❤
I miss the Christmas Eve antics every year with Jay Thomas telling the ‘greatest story’, throwing the football to knock the pizza off the top of the tree and the best part was Darlene Love singing! ❤🎄🎄🎄❤️
The Lone Ranger story will never go out of style
"They'll believe me, Citizen." So thankful for You Tube. Whenever I need to hear that story again, and it always makes me laugh, I just watch it here.
Meatball. It was Rupert Jee's meatball that was stuck on the tree...the pizza was below.
@@gkennedy2998 Love how Rupert explains that eggs (and breadcrumbs) gave the meatball more strength - something to that effect. Matter-of-fact explanation of meatball composition. Hysterical.
Will never stop missing the hilarious Jay Thomas
It’s not Christmas until Darlene Love sings on Letterman! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
"They'll believe me, citizen."
Exactly. The greatest talk show story of all time.
😂😂😂👍👍
God Bless Dave!! One of the best Memories EVER!
Thank you for giving us this wonderful gift one more time, Dave. You have no idea what it meant to experience this again after all this time.
Well said, and sentiment shared.
I agree 100%!
I MISS DAVE!!!
Miss this on Dave! It amazed me when I found out how many years Letterman continued this tradition!
Now, since 2015, Diane has been performing this song annually on The View
My wife and I were lucky enough to be in the audience for one of Darlene's performances. It was absolutely incredible! The energy was unbelievable! It really did feel like the roof would be blown off! It's been and still is my favorite Christmas song! Love this reunion! It's wonderful!
Saw Darlene perform last Christmas. She was amazing and said she’d continue performing until it wasn’t fun anymore!!! So happy I went!!
@@journeylvr Where did she perform? Would love to see her next year if it becomes a yearly thing!
Dave, Paul, Barbara, and Darlene. This is the best Christmas present ever!
Merry Christmas 2024!
@MitchClement-il6iq Same to you!
This warmed my heart. There was something so special about Dave and Paul bringing Darlene on every year. Along with Jay Thomas knocking a meatball off the tree, this was the true spirit of Christmas to me. Barbara must have had a budget windfall really getting classy with credits and a B/W ending...look out Scorsese! Where is Mary? Now I'm worried.
Jay and the Lone Ranger story.
@@larrydreiling3951THE BEST
WHERE'S OUR MARY??🌸
@@larrydreiling3951 "They'll believe me, citizen!"
Fun fact: Darlene first performed this song on Late Night in December 1986. Her second performance wasn’t until Late Show’s second Christmas in 1994 (Andy Williams appeared on Late Show’s first Christmas in 1993).
Darlene then appeared on LS every year - except during the Writers Strike in 2007 - until the show’s final Christmas in 2014.
That’s a total of 21 yearly performances. And not 28, the number mentioned here and in so many other places.
I’m told there’s a complete compilation somewhere on the TH-cams.
Great to see you, Don. Hope you're well. Grateful for all the hard work you put into your YT channel over the years.
The compilation on Don Giller’s TH-cam channel tells the whole story.
But there are 28 years between 1986 and 2014,so I think that's why Darlene said that number so she's kinda right. And she's 82...
@@gyorgybessenyei72 There’s no ambiguity. She’s maintained for years that she performed the song for 28 consecutive years. That is, every year starting in 1986.
@@gyorgybessenyei72 But we're not working here with "between." Your math skills are about as good as Darlene's. The span from 1986 to 2014, inclusive, is 29 years.
It just isn't Christmas until Dave introduces Darlene's "Christmas, Baby Please Come Home" with Paul on the piano. It just isn't!
SIXTY years later and Darlene has still got it! Thanks Dave, Paul and Barbara for bringing it back one more time. Now my holiday is officially made🥰
The View 2015 - 2023. I found Diane has been performing every Christmas!
This was always my favorite Letterman Late night show …. the Christmas show with Darlene Love!!!!
Wow! Dave said it perfectly, this really was like being home again.
Holy reindeer noses, it's a Christmas miracle. Thanks to all who are making this possible.
We need to see more of Dave and Paul together again.
Absolutely
I love that they called Bill Scheft in to "play" the sleigh bells.
His work for ‘The Truants’ has led to this moment.
Yay! I think about the Darlene Love Christmas visit every single year and I miss it SO much.
The View has Darlene singing Christmas, (Baby Please Come Home) each year , now.
Christmas isn't quite the same anymore.
Glad Teta could transfer the tradition to ‘The View’ but it pales in comparison to the big feel in the Ed Sullivan Theater on Late Show. The last two years were absolutely incredible. But we are very happy the story is still evolving.
Not Christmas til Darlene sings. You 3 look like the perfect Christmas card photo.
Thanks guys just saved my Christmas. Jim Toronto Ontario Canada
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF THE FANS A ND OF COURSE DAVE PAUL AND DARLENE
Right back at ya! Our history is Canadian, so happy Boxing Day too!
Paul singing Oh Holy Night as Cher!❤❤❤❤ (missing the pizza tree-topper!) Jay Thomas stories! Darlene’s beautiful voice! Barbara yelling! Dave looking like Atkins Santa!❤❤❤❤
Thank you all for a break from the reality that we live in! This is a wonderful de-stressor!
Bless you all💜💜
Yes!!!!!! NOW it’s Christmas!
We even get Paul’s iconic Cher impression!
May God bless all these people.
Exactly! Such a great added bonus!
Darlene Love's Christmas appearances were my very favourite Letterman shows. No one does Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) like Love. I really miss those.
Crying now with nostalgia........never wanted this magic to end.
My holiday has been made thanks to Paul's impression of Cher's 'O Holy Night!". I looked forward to that every year!!!😂
oh wow. I have a deep connection to this song. And I have a deep connection to the 28 years of this luminous tradition. little weepy now
Absolutely a moment that evokes amazing emotion.
May. I ask what created the connection?
Ok, well it started with the song, and how moving it is. The heart aches just hearing that the person is not with their partner at Christmas (holidays). All of the beauty of winter, Christmas, family, union, and celebrating that we are all inseparable in our primary nature. And the partner is not home for this is quite moving. Separation of natural unions get me. Then came "A Very Special Christmas" compilation with U2 singing it. It became my favorite Christmas song.
Then it went transcendent as the Letterman tradition grew with the song over the decades. Hearing it again today brought that all back. Ya' picked a good one. (Not enough room in this forum to go into detail about the bond with Dave.). Merry Christmas and happy holidays .:)@@thelettermanpodcast
@@forestyogin2218 wonderful. The U2 collab is also a very big piece to the puzzle for us as well! That project was fantastic.
On the opening notes, I immediately start bawling just like I did every year. Love you all. Miss you all. Thank you for doing this. 🎄
Oh my gosh, SAME 😭
I'm not crying your crying! 😢😢😢 PEACE!
The View 2015 - 2023
Go, Paul! Gosh, I’ve missed this‼️
I have missed this so much. Thank you, Darlene!! Absolutely beautiful. Thank you Dave, Paul and Barbara.
This is almost too good to be true!!!! Thank you, Barbara, Dave, Paul, Darlene, the gorgeous choir, the production team. Merry Christmas everyone, from someone who remembers Darlene's very first appearance.
It was magic.
Me too I only missed two shows the whole time Dave was on.I remember watching his daytime show and thinking "They need to put this guy on after Carson"
I remember the first appearance, too!
We might be in the minority with this comment… While it would’ve been awesome to have the whole band there, and hopefully this could become a tradition and perhaps next year we might get that, it was really, really cool to hear Paul’s fantastic nuances on the piano, which normally would be drowned out by the rest of the beautiful collaboration. Paul is SO good, and this stripped down version was incredible. And of course, Scheft’s Sleigh Bells brought it all together.
Thank you Darlene for sharing your light!
I was born in the early 80s, so by the time I was old enough to appreciate the musical nuances, the CBS Orchestra was on TV and I didnt discover the 80s 4 piece band until later.
It wasnt until I went back and watched VCR tapes of the NBC show that I realized why Paul was a genius--- he could make that 4 piece band sound like a full orchestra. Credit also to Will, Hiram, and Steve-- the best band ever on television. But Paul was the one with the nuance. He knows exactly which subtle earworm by a random instrument needs to be replicated.
That first Darlene Love performance with the 4 piece band was one of the best for that reason was well as her palpable excitement.
@@dspiffy well said! The next time Paul comes on the show we will talk about this.
I had to look twice! I didn’t know it was Paul @ first!👏🏿👏🏼👏🏽👏👏🏾😂
@@thelettermanpodcast By far that original 4 piece was the best band ever on any TV show. Runners up include the Night Music band, which had several crossovers from Letterman (particularly Hiram) Arsenio's band with Sheila E, and The Roots on the Late Night Show (they've had to water down for 1130/1030central like everyone else).
Have you guys ever had Steve on the podcast? He's not heard from enough about his time at Letterman. A lot of famous drummers today credit hearing him on Letterman as their biggest inspiration.
Very sad that you cant have Hiram or Bernie on.
@@dspiffy not yet. Just Felicia, Paul, Bones, and Will. Anton soon, Chez hopefully soon.
We get a connection to Steve we will have him on in a second.
Christmas isn’t Christmas without Love. Thank you, kids! This is beautiful.
It's officially Christmas. I've heard Darlene Love sing Christmas Baby with Paul Shaffer and David Letterman. Now I'll get out my old VHS and watch Jay Thomas tell the best story ever and my Christmas will be complete. Thanks so much for being a part of my family's annual Christmas tradition. Merry Christmas.
Now THIS is a gift! Looking forward
My absolute favorite Christmas tradition!! Thank you Darlene, and Dave, and Paul!!! ❤️
I’m actually shaking with excitement for this! This song has become my favorite Christmas song of all time because of her appearances on Letterman. Love Love!!!
Such a wonderful moment!
Me too!
@@thelettermanpodcast absolutely!
@@MrMotoflou just under the armpit. If you tickle yourself, you’ve gone too far.
Me too!😊😊😊
I didn't realize how much I'd enjoy that. Thank you everyone.
Could this be....a NEW tradition, every year?? Maybe with Paul's old band mates next year?
Dave, thank you so much for this show.
Paul SHREDDING
Exactly!
Just incredible. Imagine being 82 and still sounding like that!
Oh my god. I can't tell you how happy this makes me. It's been a hard Christmas season but seeing Darlene back with the gang to sing Christmas Baby makes me weep with joy. Thank you thank you thank you for making this happen again. :) :) :)
The first few Christmases after the show went off the air were hard without this tradition. Even watching the old performances on TH-cam wouldn't suffice. Thanks for bringing this back. RIP Jay Thomas
miss all this ! Dave most of all !!
Looked forward to the Christmas episode every year with Darlene Love and Jay Thomas. Merry Christmas!
Yes Jay Thomas. Dave why did you leave us?
I can't wait! I have been missing this Christmas tradition.
Dave's Christmas Show was an event that we looked forward to every year. Happy to say my husband and I watched all 28 years of this holiday tradition. Got very emotional watching it in 2014. Thank you, Dave, Darlene, Paul, and Barbara. This was EVERTHING!
Can't wait. Love Darlene and it's my favorite Christmas song. Miss Dave and the gang at 11:30 pm
God I miss this at Christmas. I think I’ve seen all 28 performances of Darlene on Dave. And now 29.
This was the best Christmas gift, or any gift, that I could have received! Thank you all.
Was so happy to see this-saw Darlene twice when she toured after Dave retired. The Late Show performance became a Christmas tradition. She was great live too.
Darlene's performance became a tradition for me. It was just the perfect song to end my Christmas day, along with Jay Thomas' Lone Ranger story and his football prowess! We miss you, Dave.
"Oh holy night"....a Christmas tradition!!!!
What a beautiful gift. Thank you Dave and team!
Very nice! Good job, Darlene, Paul & the back-up singers. Thanks Dave & Barbara.
Happiest memories with this tradition over the years
This officially got me in the Christmas spirit!!
Thank you so much to everyone for this video, especially Darlene, Paul, Barbara and Dave!! ❤
Merry Christmas to all!! 🎄🎤 🎹
Don't forget former writer Bill Scheft on the tambourine at about 9:26 😂😂😂
All legends
Amazing. Darlene still sounds fantastic. I listen and watch some of her appearances every year at this time. Thank you and merry Christmas everyone
Darlene Love is as beautiful as ever, and her voice is in top shape. ❤️
Oh the memories and how times have changed. I looked forward to this and Paul's Cher story every year. I miss those times and I was so happy to see this today! Thank you guys for reliving this fantastic memory!
Nothing more beautiful than friends around a piano singing a beautiful song of hope. This is what Christmas is all about.
OMG!! You made my day!! I've missed this so much since you went off the air. Every year since then I scour TH-cam for all the old performances by Darlene!! Thanks for this!! If only Jay was around to tell the Lone Ranger story again. Thank you so much Barbara Gains for luring Dave out of his lair for these very special broadcasts. You are the best!!!
This might be the best Christmas gift ever! In our crazy world, all is right when Dave, Paul, Barbara and Darlene Love entertain us with this song. As I keep saying, late night has not & will never be the same without David and his team. I miss you every night! But this video has brought much joy. Merry Christmas to all and thank you! 🎄❤️🎄
I didn't expect this. I didn't know I needed it, and now I know this might be one of the greatest clips that TH-cam Dave has given us since the channel's kickoff. Bravo to everybody and Merry Christmas!
This is indeed totally AWESOME!!! Missed this on Utube until now its 9Jan2024!!! It just extends my holiday joy, although each year watching the posted Letterman shows, yes 2014 best with Ms Love on top of piano!!! She wore awesone red gown & all the white tuxes!!! Wish Dave still doing his show. Indeed Cher & Darlene epic " full circle " together again at Christmas Tree lighting l, now last year, 2023 LOL... THIS IS AWESOME SEEING THEM AGAIN AFTER YEARS!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024 CHEERS EVERYONE!!!!
This truly, truly, truly made made my day.
This iscertainly a wonderful treat, thanks to all for making this happen. We do miss Mr. Thomas and his great football toss, and his great stories. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
Thank you so much Dave, I really miss your Christmas antics with the meatball on the tree and topped off with Darlene Loves excellent rendition of Merry Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), hasn’t been the same out in the world without it. 🎄🎄 Wishing you and yours the very best of holidays!
Well...this makes my holiday season.
Absolutely
Aww! I can't wait! Three people I absolutely adore and love. Will be there with bells on!
Fantastic!!!!
Thank you Dave, Darlene, Barbara, Paul and staff!!!!
Merry Christmas to all!!!
PLEASE make this a new tradition! That made the holiday season for me! Love you Darlene!
What a treat after so many years!
Special Guest Darlene Love performing her Christmas hit with Paul and back-up singers-I hope this becomes an annual tradition on The Barbara Gaines Show !
I got teary eyed watching this. Thank you so much! You have no idea how much it means to me
Felt the same way. What a great moment, so easily evoking emotions.
Gosh. Missed it so much. Missing tossing the meatball on the tree 🌲 love you Dave and Paul !
This is amazing. The Christmas season isn't official until Jay's (RIP - miss him) Lone Ranger story, the meatball challenge and of course Darlene Love. Thank you for bringing this back. Merry Christmas everyone
I have sooo missed Darlene’s singing each Christmas time. Thank you for bringing her back❤️❤️❤️!
My god. From the first letter spoken to the last note played, absolutely beautiful. What a generous gift from you all. Ms. Love I am crying right now because of you. That was unbelievable. Thank you so much and Happy Holidays!
Darlene is our connection to happiest music!❤
As dave would say, that was delightful. Merry Christmas all!
Best Barbara Gaines Show ever! Every second of this is wonderful x
A Dream come true!
So happy to see this! Every year watching Dave and hearing Darlene sign made my Christmas complete!!🌲🌲
Honestly I wasn't really in the Christmas spirit this year until I saw this. Thanks Dave
Watching Darlene Love and Jay Thomas tell his story were really the only Christmas traditions worth having
Dave's Christmas show was a yearly tradition for me. The meatball, Jay's story and Darlene to end the night. It was perfect.
❤This was SO great to see. Christmas with David, Paul and Darlene Love again. Just needed a pizza 🍕 Thanks for this!!!
Last week I watched on TH-cam Darlene sing Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) on Letterman’s 2014 show and was sad to know we’d never hear and see that again. Thank you Dave, Paul, Barbara and most of all Darlene for putting this together!
This will always be my favorite non religious Christmas song! Love her, watch it every year!!!
So wonderful! I love this so much! Miss seeing Darlene Love and Jay Thomas every year. Thanks for doing this!
My holiday season has officially begun! Thanks so much for reviving this tradition! 🙂❤🙏
Wow, truly an unexpected Christmas gift to see Darlene back with the gang delivering the goods that made each year's holiday show a proper event. Thank you for this!!
This was a wonderful Christmas gift to myself and all true fans of Dave, Paul, Barbra, and of course the divine Ms Love. Beautiful rendition. Sending much love and appreciation from Detroit. 💙💙💙💙
OMG, this is divine. Thank you all, especially you, Dave, for making this channel happen. In a very real way to me and many other people, THIS is the golden age to be a David Letterman fan. Happy holidays!

And a year later, after a show in Asbury Park, I gave Darlene a velvet-lined box with some of the fake snowflakes I had gathered from the “Late Show” stage after that final Christmas show!
Wow! How nice!
We have some on our set. And interviewed Glynn Borders who was in charge of making it snow on an episode as well.
This makes me so incredibly happy. Thank you all, and Merry Christmas.
