I used to have 6506 and sold it to 6505+ never missed old one. The Plus has cleaner distortion, tighter bottom end, and suit the mix better (use less EQ)
I liked the 5150 II the best, it has a fuller more detailed sound to my old ears, I have a 6505+ US made and love it. It gets played almost as much as my Plexi 1987. Thanks for the comparison.
I have a combo I've had for 20 years. Love it. One thing NOBODY talks about is how the "unusable" clean channel on the 5150 has a low input jack lol. THAT'S how you get cleans from a 5150. Buy an A/B/Y switcher..... now you get 4 channels! Clean, crunch, high gain, lead.......
Kyle, I really enjoyed this video. Especially how you used the TS9 and SD1 !! I wish you'd do this more in your amp reviews. Hearing the amps with more common/popular ODs ....and then using your boutique OD/Boost at the end of the video, is a very nice touch. I think it gives the review another level of realism. I liked the 5150² best as well. Great video. Thanks man 🤘😎🤘
I can barely hear any difference at all. I definitely don't hear the differences in the low end, but I'll take your word for it. I've had my 5150 for over 20 years, and always thought it had a tremendous and tight low end thump. It's difficult to imagine that the 5150 II is even tighter than that! Thanks for doing these videos!
Yea I heard the same thing as you. I've actually played on both amps before and it was the same then too. I personally like the tighter and more mid punchy of the 5150ii. One of these days I will get one!
I played through a 5150 II for over 20 years and loved it. You are pretty much spot on with your assessment of the differences. A shift in the mid-range voicing is the biggest difference. Moving from a lower mid voicing to more upper mids really made the 5150 II tighter, more focused and percussive. I ran my 5150 II through two Mesa Boogie Recto 4x12's and it was super punchy, unbelievably loud and cut through like a laser. I totally understand why it was such a metalcore darling. My recent move to a MT15 through an Avatar 2x12 w/Hellatone 60's(V30's) was tough at first. The MT15's mids are so different than the 5150 II. It took a few weeks before my ears adjusted.
When I was first looking for a bigger sounding tube amp to compliment my king of clean amps (JC 120), i tested both a 6505+ (5150 II), & 6505 (5150), though i enjoyed how the +/II sounded focused, & the footswitch capability of crunch on/off, i ultimately went with a 5150 signature font head. Mainly because of the hi/low gain inputs, the fatter grunt in the gain structure, & overall simplicity in look. I will admit, mines modified to death& though it still sounds like a 5150, its tuned more to my own needs. Someone looking at both of these, the 5150 to me sounds like a wild animal, while the II/+ versions are much more focused & direct. Low mid grunt, vs upper mid shriek (in a good way). To each their own, they both have good qualities & tones.
There's no winner here , they both kick ass ... I own a original peavey mark 2 . Great metal amp .... can't go wrong with either one. nice demo as always kyle .....
Awesome vid! I have to agree in the differences you said you heard (more high mids and tighter low end on II, low mids and a bit more open low end on the signature) Also beautiful Explorer. I would love to try one someday. How are the necks on then especially for a guy like me that loves Jackson guitars?
I used to have an MH it's really thin sounding by comparison. Don't get me wrong it's a cool little amp but you're 6505+ will blow it away especially when it comes to.. well, balls.
Am running a 5150 II into a square 5150 4 X 12 cab. Both amps sounded great in this vid. Also sounded like either amp could get very close to the other one - lots of overlap. For me, the slightly better clean of the 5150 II is more useful - bar cover band gigs and such. I really like the sheffield speakers.
Have you ever tried the original 60W 5150 combo? I just picked one up for $400 and it's amazing. Strangely, it's not just a 60W version of the head. The clean channel is actually clean, the crunch is more Marshall-like, and the high gain channel is tighter than the head. Apparently it was based on Tweaks Eddie wanted made to the head, a lot of which were incorporated into the 5150 II. It still doesn't sound exactly the same as the II though. It's more like a 5150 1.5
This is a weird suggestion but I'm wondering if you'd consider a Mark V 90 vs 5150 style amp in the future. There are only a few demos like this and all of them were horribly recorded, only one even tried mic'ing the cab but did a terrible job. It might sound random but I've been wondering how the amps compare for super tight, modern high gain tones and which one does it better. I know it might be a lot to ask but it would be a killer shootout that very few people have even done and I'd personally love to see it.
The Mark is incredibly versatile, Mesas are warmer, less tight. Different beasts imo. If you only play metal, and need tight chugs, the 5150 might be for you. For everything else, the Mark is going to do a better job, while still offering awesome high gain tones.
@@notasilicaanimus I have a Mark IV and a 6505+ , the Mesa is more versatile, the Peavey is tighter, no question. Not saying the Mark IV is wooly like a dual rec, but you don't really want to turn the bass past 3 for anything haha, usually 0-2. IV sounds great and is my fav amp, but the 6505+ is tighter with more gain. I've only played the Mark 5 a couple of times, it's tighter and more gain than the Mark IV for sure, maybe it competes with the 6505, but I've never played them in the same room.
I'm waiting for this vid... I really enjoy your work! Please if one day you can make a comparison between the Peavey 5150 head and the old combo version, Peavey 5150 212, it would be great. 🤘
I have a 6534+ that I paid 600$ for in perfect condition. The thing is a monster. Have always liked the 5150 II more. Tighter sound all around. Great vid!
@Nick Arcolla 🇺🇸 I hear ya man. I don't see myself going to anything else any time soon. It does everything I want it to do and sounds just as good if not better than a lot of the more expensive amps out there.
Hey man. It'd be great see you try to match that evh mxr 5150 overdrive pedal to the amp if you can get one from somewhere. Great comparison and the SD1 rules!
I have a 5150 ii and its perfect for me. I have it running through a 4x12 cabinet with vintage 30s. This amp sitting on top of an orange 4x12 with v30s.....❤ is the shit. I got a good clean channel and and great rhythm channel with lots of gain cause im in a metal band lol i also have a tube screamer i use which makes eveything great. Badass amplifier.
I'm a Marshall person. However, everytime I hear these amps on TH-cam, I want one. You seem to have the same ear as I, we hear the same things. Pretty cool.
Also a Marshall guy, but I love my block letter 5150. Haven’t found an amp I like better for metal...and I’ve tried a lot of MUCH more expensive amps. At the end of the day, they seem like the they are just all going for a slightly smoother/more polite 5150. I’ll take the original every time.
Had a JCM900 20+ years ago. Played on my 5150-2 and immediately traded in the 900. Nothing like the 5150-2 imho. Just picked up a JCM2000 TSL100. Will be comparing the two soon foe listening pleasure.
Regardless of which you prefer they are pretty much the same. For me the cost savings are what I would look at. I got my 5150 II for $600, try getting the original 5150 for that.
I had to sell my OG 5150 last year due to some financial issues. Bought a 6505 + yesterday but I can swear I think I like it better. Video confirms this
Hey man! As always I’m really enjoying your stuff and can’t wait to see how these two amps pair with each other. Another suggestion I’d love to give you would be maybe doing a video comparing the EVH 5150 heads, for example maybe comparing the 50/100 watt EL34 and seeing how that compares and doing that with the normal 6L6 50/100 watt variants as well and the same thing with the Stealth heads as well. I hope I made sense here 😂😂
With the standard Mesa cab I prefer the 5152. On the traditional Mesa cab I prefer original 5150. When I bought my first Mesa cab (a standard slant baffle with straight outer box) I used rob Arnold’s 5152 settings and my mind was BLOWN.
I had 5150ii and liked it much better than the 5150. Thought the ii had better distortion and better overall warmth. I think it's the players ears that dicern what we hear. Even same 2 amps can sound different. I had (3) Laney GH100TI heads, the first ones, and 2 sounded similar and the one had a much bigger beefier sound. Was day and night difference!
5150 - A much looser bottom end and very just saggy but it doesn't seem as present as it's successor. The high end is VERY present and I guess....sparkly in a way I can't really describe. The mids are quite nice here and I very much like them where they are and not as overbearing. 5150 II - A much tighter and punchier bottom end but it seems to be much more present compared to its predecessor. The high end isn't as present and like you said, seems a bit muffled. The mids are a bit overbearing in my opinion and I personally don't like it as much. Verdict: I personally prefer the original 5150 compared to the two. I like my tones very bright for one, and while the saggy low end in is an issue, I have no problem tightening it up with an overdrive and if I need more I can just dial it in on the amp. The mids and highs are the highlight of this amp, and for me personally who's used to low end issues from using Rectifier's (and their massive booming low ends), I have no problem using an OD. The II while the punchier low end is nice, the highs and mids are not my cup of tea and kill my interest in it. The winner in my eyes is the original 5150.
At the moment I have the opportunity to buying an original 5150 amp converted into a head or a 5150 II head which was allegedly modded with an adjustable bias pot and to make the lead channel sound like the original. Which would you pick? In my case I would not play live with these, I would just use them for my recording studio straight into a loadbox.
Killer demo and killer guitar, Kyle. 😎🤘🏻🎸I’ve always been a huge fan of explorer guitars(and basses) and I’ve always liked peavey guitar amps. They have a raw heavy sound. Plus they sound killer with 7-string guitars.

Not gonna happen, but I got in on preorders the first day so I should be early in on it!
Oh yea my amp in the comparison !! Very interresting to hear the boosts, and the Dead Horse protone is killer
The 5150 just has a slightly more nasty and raw sounding roar to it.
Awesome. Would love a 5150 1 vs 2 vs 3
I always consider the 5150 v2 the upgrade of the two. Plus you don't own one of these to have a clean... All about the Gain!!
