      That's why I'm adding external jacks to the speakers in my combos. So I can try the different amps with the different speakers from each combo I have. Luckily my main amp, has an, external cab jack so I can, connect whatever(within recommended ohm ratings) to it, which I fully intend to do lol.
      I'm actually most curious about how it will sound through my Fender combo because the main amp is just a Monoprice 15w tube combo with the imported Eminence 1x12" speaker. So I want to see how it sounds through the Fender 1x12" setup.

      The head will determine how you feel, the cab willl impact what you hear. Then the mic/mixing will also change the final result.

    • @Rattlepiece
      @Rattlepiece 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Also mic placement is extremely important. The mix of mics and the placement of them on the speaker itself will set the tone.

      The only difference between the two recto cabs is that the black one has a lot of use and the other one is practically new. It leaves me thinking that the "breaking in speakers" thing is something much more important than it seems.
      The new cab is a little piercing on the ears and has a more fizzy tone. The black one has a warmer and more defined sound. Old beaten up V30`s FTW XD

    The Badlander sounds brutal here. I never understood why some people complained about the Badlander and said that it didn’t have enough gain or whatever when it came out. It has more than enough gain and never gets flubby or less defined with high gain. Honestly it’s better than all the previous rectifier amps.
    And if Ola Englund likes the Badlander, then you know it’s good!

    I must say that all four amplifiers are tops when it comes to hi gain. You really can't get any better than these four. I love Mesa as every guitar amp is handmade in Petaluma California USA. The $2,000 amps are made with the same care as the Custom built more expensive ones. The Mark V is the best, for any style of music, but if you want a more basic amp that costs less, EVH III. Of course right now every amp is out of stock.

    I could never figure out how Eddie Van Halen wanted an amp like 5150. Yet it fits him so well that even then he would shape the guitar playing and music for decades forward.
    Also an interesting point how the Mesas definitely want to be played through their dedicated cabs. That one cab wouldn't sound the best for all of these heads, but some combinations work better. And none of the amps want to be played through the Marshall cab alone, probably nice in mixing cabs.

      @@joshuaperdue6883 Yep, came to comment with basically the same response.
      Listening to all of these guitars tracked and isolated is all very well for us enthusiasts, but in the grand scheme of things, those minor inflections in tone would either 1. Get lost in the mix, or 2. Be far too subtle for your average listener to actually pick out in the first place. Most players, including myself, could save a large chunk of cash by just playing through the 5150, without ever really noticing the minor differences in tonality to its much more expensive rivals.

The rhythm sound is tight and aggressive. That said when playing segued into single note lines or legato playing i find amps that excel in that area dont please me tonally in other parts of song. I like a mesa recto eq'd for more of a wild rock sound or a marshall with a boost. In the last 4 years ive really come to appreciate Jerry Cantrells dirt and facelift sound. Heavy but sings

    For a future FAQ: For folks who live in apartments with thin walls and don't want to get evicted, what's a good cab that sounds good on high gain at pretty low volumes (without headphones)? Every other video I've seen only discusses amps, not the cabinets, even though everyone agrees that the cab makes up a large part of the final sound.

    • @jamieperry3731
      @jamieperry3731 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if you figured it out, but the best setup would be a 2x12 with your speaker of choice (v30s for most people) and either a mini head like the 6505MH (20 watts) or the various engl and mesa ones, or a full size head with an attenuator.
      For your situation it sounds like you already have a pretty high wattage amp, so an attenuator; while expensive, will allow you to preserve the tone found at wall-shaking volumes while playing as quietly as you wish. They get pricey, up to $1000+, but cheaper ones can be found for $300~, not recommended to go cheaper than that usually.

      Cabs are crazy important… even if you super super close mic a mesa traditional vs Mesa standard they can sound very different (same speakers can even be swapped between the cabs with the mic position marked off and everything… zero variables other than the cab construction). I think the standard is just half an inch wider and 2 inches taller lmao.

      I wonder how the different amps affect the feel and response to the guitar. The actual sound of overdriven tubes comes across very similar, but it's the speakers that colour the sound you hear. But for the experience of the player, feel whatever you want to call it, the amp makes a difference. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @tommilitello198
      @tommilitello198 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      90% is starting to stretch a bit,that amp is responsible for a hell of a lot more tone in that signal chain than 10%,,let’s be real about it,and damn that’s a stretch lmfao of course you also said it didn’t matter which amp,are you tone deaf???

    • @jsullivan2112
      @jsullivan2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tommilitello198 Nah it's definitely 90%, the speakers are what generate the sound. Pickups and amp make up the other 10%. Especially considering every amp is a clone of a clone of another clone going back to Fenders. Tone stacks in amps aren't all that different. If you think it's more, you don't know much about amplifier design.
      It doesn't matter what the amplifier sounds like, if the speakers can't reproduce it, you ain't hearing it. That's simple physics.
      Also you misused the term tone deaf, which refers to pitch, and has nothing to do with tone.
