    The thing I dont think most folks realize is that even when in factory new condition, the Peavey 5150s varied widely due to parts variance. I have personally owned 5 or 6 minty clean 5150s that sounded like flat tires.

      Exactly my thoughts. I bet a comparison of 4 1992’s would have the same variability.

      "Like flat tires" I am stealing that.
      I watched your video on the MH vs Block vs 6505+ years ago. It's always puzzled me that I hear everyone losing their mind over the 5150 block letter... meanwhile the 5150II (6505+) always sounded better to me in every comparison I've ever watched. Even EVH himself preferred it.

      Fluff I don't always agree with you but this is spot on. I've had one that was the basic sound I expected then a sig that had some sauce to it that the others I played didn't. I fully expected it to be modded. Opened it up and nope just parts tolerances and possibly tubes😊

    Awesome video and I believe you are right in saying the differences are down to part tolerances. At the same time I think the potentiometer tolerances will likely have the largest effect here. Pot tolerances are stupidly high

    My guess is:
    A: signature
    B: 6505
    C: 1992
    D: Block Letter
    All have that signature quackiness, and the differences seem to be at the highs and lows. They’re like identical quadruplets with different haircuts

    We’re comparing the exact same circuit design to one another. The only real difference you will hear are slight variations from the aged electronics that typically drift over the span of 30+ years. Capacitors are known for this. I’ve owned 3 5150s and they’re all sounded slightly different (darker/brighter) from one another. Cool video 👍🏻

    It’s just a fact that not all equipment sounds exactly the same. There are some that just sound or play better than others for whatever unknown reason even though they are exactly the same product. That’s why when you find a good one ( of whatever amp, guitar etc )you never let it go. Such is life!

    I own a block letter, but only because I have a friend that owns a studio and he sold it to me for a very decent price (AKA, a pre-VH passing price) but after trying a number of 6505/5150 heads I really would have been happy with any one. They all have "THAT" sound, with minor differences each that are easily compensated by tweaking the controls. If anything, I kinda want the new 1992 model just so I don't have to worry about how old my OG 5150 is lmao. I know it'll deliver the tone we all love anyway, plus it'll be newer with a warranty.

    Do 4 "block letters" and you'll get 4 ever so slightly different sounding amps also.
    Component tolerances in mass produced amps are generally 5-20%. To be fair most components these days are rated at those values but still come in very close to spec. Having said that, imagine if you turned all of the knobs just a little bit differently on each amp...that's essentially what parts tolerances do for you.

    • @asnark7115
      @asnark7115 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those amps didn't sound "slightly different", though. The USA made 6505 was way out there from the others.

    • @alseick
      @alseick ปีที่แล้ว

      the fact that components have tolerance does not mean that that the company does no pre-selection
      My marshall 6100 from 1992 had 100% accurate component values after 20 years (including electrolytic caps), I bought extra/spare parts to actually match them (find most accurate ones) but that did not help at all as it seems that the whole production batch can be off

    Part tolerances and tubes tolerances. There is no bias adjustment so you can't set bias properly. 4 set of power tubes in each amp can make different values.

    Thanks for this video. It's proof that all of them may have subtle differences but pretty much the same overall. So my advise to people who love this tone to just buy one that has the best price. You can dial it in and still get a good heavy saturated tone. .

  • @DeckardRJ
    @DeckardRJ ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Such a good video displaying these amps! I think that overall you can get the same sound out of them by tweaking and exploring them. People should try and seek more for a good sound inside the sound area they're seeking rather then a very specific and unique kind of sound.

    Hey Kyle, great freaking demo as usual but this one I've been looking forward to since you first got a hold of that 1992 version. Please tell John to get a hold of me! Anyways, I've been playing for 40 years now and I was a Marshall guy for the longest time until I started with Mesa when I was on tour in the '90s, and as usual like everybody else I jumped from that to Laney and then went to many other amps, but when my friend Troy McLawhorn, now in Evanescence, brought me his new 5150 that he had for about 2 years and put it on top of my cabinets and had me try it at sound check, I got hooked. Ever since then I've owned a few 5150s, and I've seen every demo that you've done including and especially the 5150 demos. That being said, Carlos Santana's amp tech, Carl popeck, is a friend of mine and modded my last 5150, but of all these, the 1992 version to my very picky ears, is absolutely the best beast of a 5150 and you've helped me decide to go purchase one. I even own a 50 watt stealth, but it really comes down to the fact that the look, the sound, and what they've done with the new transformer in that 1992, takes the cake

  • @johnjohnstone8506
    @johnjohnstone8506 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    such a great video. tolerances in caps (Peavey schematic parts list is 10% to 20%) and resistors (all 5%)can be pretty big. Also these values change over time for most resistors and all electrolytic capacitors. cap and resistor values are extremally important. look at the amount of caps and resistors in a amp circuit and all the different interactions between them. 2 amps pulled off the same assembly line will have slight differences and none will sound exactly the same. Schematics show slight difference in the 5150 Revs pre amp sections. I forget exactly but its something like, they tweaked the value of 1 or 2 capacitors. Still this is is pretty minimal when you compare it to the total amount of tolerance variations in the entire circuit. The amount of BS people put into saying this rev 5150 is so much better and this rev 5150 is terrible, is pretty funny. A much better use of time would be spent learning how to dial your in amp correctly or to focus on improving your playing.

  • @nj1255
    @nj1255 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The block letter and 1992 sounds a bit more saturated and mid-forward. The signature sounds about as mid-forward, but a little less saturated. The 6505 sounds a bit brighter/scooped and a little less saturated, but also very tight. They all sound great IMO!

  • @diyhard3082
    @diyhard3082 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think most of the difference in components tolerance. Event if capacitors and resistors inside of an amp matched completely, pots has a such huge intolerance level that makes any amp and pedal so unique. And it's not 10% between max value, it's intolerance between two pots with completely matched resistance at max. This is a huge difference with resistance of two pots with same max value at the "same" position. Even boutique manufactures does not take care on getting so close matching as possible.

  • @erikwagonblott3334
    @erikwagonblott3334 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They might have some little bitty differences but uou can dial them in to sound pretty much identical. Lots of people say the original block letter is better than the 5150 II because its "thicker" and has a bit more gain. But then they put an overdrive in front of it to tighten up the low end. The II is already tightened up! Turn the gain up a notch and they sound the same.

    The new 6505 sounds great. I'm interested to know about something you mentioned in an earlier video about improvements to the amp's reliability regarding the tendency of the heater wires to burn up the connectors on the ribbon cable that connects the main board to the power amp board. I have had TWO Peavey amps do this - one JSX I was able to fix and one chinese 6505 I was not, because something else clearly got screwed up when it happened. I would get a new 6505 1992 OG but I do want to know what exactly they did to solve this issue.

    No reveal on that blind test? Brutal. I'm guessing it went sig, 1992, block letter, 6505. I had a dud, really cold 5150 block letter and loved it. Made the amp slightly more clear and less forgiving, kinda budget-VHT esque. All that matters is how the amp encourages you to play and it seemingly isn't tied specifically to make or model.

    If you used one power section to run all the preamps through, they’d all be hitting the same power section, but from what I understand, when the whole amp is run off the same power, it reacts differently than when the preamp and power amp are split.

    What you've proven, is that most people who think there's a big difference between them are hearing them through different speakers/cabinets. The speakers are still the single biggest tone shaper.
    If you think the Block Letter has a little more mid honk to it, wouldn't just be easier to adjust your EQ as opposed to going out and buying an overly-priced one? Well - yeah...

    The only people hearing differences between the amps are the sellers trying to unload them & sell you on perceived differences.
    6:04 All four of these amps are the same.

    The block letter most definitely has quite a noticeable low-mid “oompf” that the others lack, as is the case when comparing my block letter to the others. That low-mid bump is even more noticeable when you kicked the boost on.
    But the sig/6505/1992 are all so similar that there really is no point in arguing whichever of those are better.
    In the end, yes they all have the same “character”, thus do all sound essentially the same, and are all no different enough that you can’t EQ to match in post.
    Thanks for doin this!

    Just get a 1992 OG and you're good to go. That one seemed to be the best all arounder.

    The differences aren't so drastic that any one person would hear it in a mix. For the most part, they pretty much sound alike. They have enough of the same voicing that it wouldn't matter.
