This information is so important because oftentimes people don't understand the advantages/disadvantages of taking substances/supplements and end up using them in an unhealthy or harmful way in order to hit a certain level of athletic performance as quickly as possible without realizing the role that supplements play in overall health and fitness (both negatively and positively).
There is so much misinformation on social media about most of these products. I found this video super helpful in understanding what the main purpose of each supplement is and adverse effects to be aware of.
A good resource I use to search for supplements is the Australian Institute of Sport. It provides in-depth descriptions of the supplement as well as placing them in a Class system based on research and efficacy
This video was much longer than your other videos, but that just means that there is so much to dietary supplements and all the different components involved in sport performance. Like Claire said, there is so much online about a generalization of supplements and that it works for any and every body type and its crucial to learn that it is not always the case.
As someone who has hypoglycemia, it is really interesting to understand more deeply how insulin works. It is interesting to me as well that there are people who take insulin who do not have diabetes, I did not ever realize that happened!
I found this video so helpful as it was a review of the some of the many different hormones and supplements that we have learned about it other classes as well. I kind of forgot just how many there were.
I have actually always been interested in learning more about supplements because they are very prevalent in the fitness industry. I always felt like I heard so much about them but didn't know a lot about what they did so this video was great!
This is a great video and totally agree on starting with nutrition first before seeking ergogenic aids. These aids are meant to be a supplement instead of replacing a whole macro or micro nutrient.
This video was not only very entertaining but a very organized breakdown of these ergogenic aids! It was super easy to absorb all the information because of how interesting the topic is.
This was a great video and explained the clear difference between banned substances and helpful supplements. Everyone wants an edge in their sport and often resorts to using substances to get that, so it is helpful to understand how they work in the body. I am also shocked to hear which supplements are banned because often it's not the ones I think.
I find this chapter so intriguing! It is really important to know which supplements are banned and which aren't even if you aren't the athlete yourself. As the professional, we must know what is best for our clients and which supplements will be best for specific activities!
This video was so helpful in understanding the differences in all the different types of ergogenic aids and dietary supplements. I didn't know just how many different variations there were.
This was a great video outlining the effects of both illegal and legal ergogenic aids and dietary supplements. I learned a lot about what each supplement does, as well as the potential side effects one may experience after intake.
I loved the way this video clearly stated the differences between each supplement, their specific uses, and their effectiveness! There is a lot of info out there that is misleading and confusing, so this really helped to bring it all home for me!
Great breakdown of some of the common supplementation athletes and people who are trying to improve their performance. The lists of effects and benefits were really helpful.
This video was such a great breakdown of each of the common supplement use despicably with athletes and people who want to improve their performance. its also super intresting to hear of all the supplements that are allowed and this that are banned.
As a sports fan, I did not understand how athletes used steroids or how blood doping worked, so it was very interesting to gain an understanding of these. I'm interested to know how blood doping is monitored if it is the same athlete's blood that is being injected. I also appreciated the pieces about all of the legal supplements because sometimes it can be difficult to decide which positive effects are worth the potential side effects.
Going over all of these ergogenic aids and supplements brings me back to nutrition. It is so interesting to learn about how oral pills or steroids can play a role in sports performance/strength.
This was a great refresher. I loved learning about ergogenic aids and dietary supplements in nutrition for exercise and sports performance. When used correctly, they can significantly impact performance!
I remember learning a couple of the Dietary supplements you pointed out in nutrition for exercise and sports science, and it was great to review them again!
I like how you noted supplement the diet not replace something in ones diet. I think it is wild that supplements are not regulated by the FDA. I never new that creatine played an important role in concussion response and prevention. I loved the passion for caffeine!
I thought the section regarding anabolic steroids was super interesting. It is eye-opening to see how many different types of steroids there are and how some are orally active and how some are injectable.
It truly is crazy to see the effects of creatine and then see exactly why it works explained to me on such a scientific level. I always just thought, oh if you take this powder you will just become massive and shredded but there's so much more to it!
I remember learning about a few of these substances in exercise nutrition. This topic is fascinating and it is cool to see the literature as the years pass showing that new substances are being banned and some unbanned.
Besides the serious health concerns with PEDs, I'm sure there is a strong addictive component when performance increases rapidly, and the decreases in size and strength when coming off the drugs.
Hey professor Goodin! I liked that you mentioned creatine being falsely "blamed" for certain side effects. I have been taking it for quite some time now and have not noticed any side effects but I will see things on the internet on how it causes all sorts of kidney issues and it just leaves me confused.
It was really interesting learning about both the positive and negative effects of performance enhancing substances and dietary supplements. I was happy to know that caffeine could be beneficial for my performance since I'm a big coffee drinker!
Was really interesting to learn about HGH (human growth hormone). I have heard about some cases where professional athletes got caught using them but never really understood exactly what it was and what it did
Dr. Goodin, it was really interesting that people use insulin and its anabolic effects. I had no idea people used this as a steroid. I also had no idea that steroids can be taken orally, I thought they were all injections.
Wow, there is a lot more to supplements than I thought! I figured most of that stuff was just marketing claims, but I guess theres a lot to look into and learn :)
It's interesting to see how supplements affect the body in different ways. I also learned in my nutrition class that some supplements are banned in other countries, but not banned here which is really interesting to me.
This was a long video, but to take away anything, creatine is the safest supplement to take out of all of them with the least adverse effects. Thank you!
I was surprised that caffeine has an affect on phyiscal activity as well. I have only known it as a "wake up" supplement, I didn't know it had an affect on physical exercise as well.
It was really interesting to learn how some of these supplements can help increase performance, but at the same time can possibly have some very negative effects on the body.
While I've been aware of the benefits caffeine can provide from previous classes, I do think I need to limit my intake to avoid the adverse effects, especially restlessness since I have experienced that a few times.
that is nuts how many different supplements and enhancers there are in the world of sports. I honestly can't believe that people would take those drugs when they know that death is on the line. But that sucks for your friends in the race, well at least they know for next time to read the full article and not just the discussion.
I've lived in California for a while now and I have not heard of this "herb" you are talking about.... on a more serious note, what are your thoughts on using anabolic steroids in helping overweight or obese individuals?
I always wondered why I heard many instances of liver failure from the use of steroids. I know now that its because ingestible, orally active, steroids like Oxandralone exist and are one of the primary causes
The downsides of illegal substances seem to definitely outweigh the benefits it could gain. Short life for a short lived moment of glory. It is awesome though that research is finding more natural ways to boost muscle building properties
it was interesting to learn that HGC isn't helpful for women specifically and I assume that is because it comes from a placenta so because they can already create it, it wouldn't be helpful
@@DonPernia I believe in helping others down the path I walk, and paying things forward along the way. This video stressed the importance of balancing proper nutrition and training for performance with supplementation. Thanks Dr. Goodin!
As my peers said, I also found it interesting how often this information that Dr. Goodin explained is commonly misspoken on social media platforms.

It was interesting to learn that some athletes "stack" their steroids to increase its effectiveness and potency. I never knew that!

Can't believe that there have been cases of high school kids taking anabolic steroids, true extreme case.
I thought it was interesting how when taking anabolic steroids, injecting them is actually safer for you than taking them orally.
I feel bad for the guys who took the sodium bicarbonate and had to deal with the messy gastrointestinal effects during a RUN. yikes.
Agree creatine and caffeine only ones with real world benefit anything else just lines the gyms(and mine) pockets
supplements have a lot of benefit but which common supplement do you think is oversold and over used that has little to no benefit?
