    Robbie, you just gave me an idea! I've been meaning to get some fabric to make a shade cloth out of and once you talked about Gary's sun/shade contraption, I realized I could cut some squares into the fabric to do the same. May not be anywhere near the same effect as Gary's, but worth a try! Will be experimenting soon. Thank you!

    Way to go Gary! Ask Gary how he keeps his soil in the buckets in the kiddie pool from getting soggy. Both of you are amazing! I am in zone 7b, with heavy clay, thanks to Robbie, I am successfully gardening in totes. Love you both!

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A number of things help. If you think of the bucket as an upside down pot, I make sure the soil is free draining and has a consistant texture. The water wicks from the bottom holes to the top as the sun dries the surface. We don't get a lot of rain but when we do the water flows down back into the pond. The roots of most plants stay above the water line. My soil mixes are based on our native clay but are amended to suit what I want to grow. The mix going into the buckets or totes is best described as loamy. Clay, sand and compost.

    That's the beauty of nature's way. Gary IS breeding mosquitoes - and LOTS of them - but that's what dragonflies eat and they NEED a lot of mosquitoes. It's their FOOD - their very LIFE - it is the way of things. Which is why mosquitoes multiply so fast in areas where they eliminate standing water in an attempt to control them. Because mosquitoes multiply fast while dragonflies multiply much more slowly and they BOTH need standing water to breed in but the dragonflies take a lot longer. So, yeah, what you do when you eliminate standing water is you eliminate the mosquitoes predator - not mosquitoes which multiply so fast that they can breed in very little water, very quickly where as dragonflies need more stability in the water to accommodate the time it takes the eggs to hatch. You can TEMPORARILY reduce the mosquito population but without dragonflies, you're not going to have much luck because you'll end up with HORDES of mosquitoes with no dragonflies to EAT them.
    It's the same with "gut flora" and why one gets an explosion of "bad" gut flora in their digestive tract after being given antibiotics because the "bad" guys need so little and multiply fast and repopulate very quickly but the "good" guys that eat the "bad" guys take forEVER to get their population back up so you take more antibiotics and just get stuck on a merry-go-round. The bad guys explode because in nature, the "good" guys eat so much of them they NEED a lot of them but if you've eliminated the "good" guys...the "bad" guys have no predators and just take over. But HOORAY for fermented veggies!! It's chock full of "good guys" which is why probiotics can have such a profound effect. Once you take them, they just go crazy eating up "bad guys" by the buckets.
    A balanced insect population will maintain just the right amount of "bad" guys to feed just the right about of "good" guys. It will govern itself. IF you let it and the more dragonflies you have, the more mosquitoes you have. Less mosquitoes and the dragonflies will go look for more, elsewhere - in and out of this and that area as the mosquito populations fluctuate. EXCEPT in areas where you eliminate their breeding ground along with the mosquito breeding grounds because it's the same breeding ground for both. Just like your gut. So eat your fresh veggies in the summer, fermenting (which basically means "slowly rotting") veggies in the winter and let nature do her thang. Just like making soil - with boatloads boatloads of tiny "enemies" and the "allied forces" that eat them. An army that literally marches on its stomach.
    It is the way of things. And it's why your way of gardening can go on for years in a single tote. Because it's NOT full of compost - "compost" is dead. What it's full of is life - it is compostING, not compostED. It's a whole planet, in and of itself, teeming with life. Which is why you continue "feeding" it. If a tote would hold up - it could go on forever. Just like the earth. You even get great amounts of the necessary manure to feed the "bad" guys that feed the "GOOD" guys, thanks to the worms. You could put a tote on the ground to get it some worms and then put it on concrete and as long as was fed, whether by its own debris or your scraps, it would maintain a complete colony of worms of just the right population to keep it going. The worms would breed more when there's more food and less when there's less food. Same with the manure makers in Gary's ponds - the fish.
    Your totes continue to drain well because you're top feeding the allies, retarding the rot/fermentation of the wood. That's what "rot" is. It's something that's being eaten by something else. If people fed the soil around their fence posts, they'd probably last a whole lot longer. You could probably tell when your soil needs "fed" by how quickly a popsicle stick is consumed by it. I doubt a popsicle stick would last much more than a day in starving soil. Not actual DEAD soil, but HUNGRY soil. STARVING soil.
    Nature is SOOO flipping awesome and right and smart and man is mostly SOOO flipping not, ROFL!! It never fails to amaze me that man is SOOO not interested in the reality of such things. He thinks he knows everything so he's stopped exploring - but that's okay because it pretty much makes the realm of the unknown - i.e. the whole REST of reality, where we explorers prefer to live - a whole lot less crowded and profoundly les..."whiny".! Sowing and reaping and exploring and discovering - THAT'S life!! Love to you both!!

      I have several varieties of bananas that taste different from store bought. Firstly I can pick them ripe, or sometimes over ripe. The Manzano variety has a slight apple flavor. The Goldfinger is commercially grown and is the most like store bought. The duck weed creates filtered light reducing algae growth. The fish do well in this environment. Thanks.

      @@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Im giving moringa a go -just planted seeds by two methods. Someone 45 min north of me was successful in keeping one alive for 3 yrs. so will see what happens. Would really like to see some pods put on but realistically looking at them being annuals for me. Hoping the leaves are just as/or close to being as beneficial as a well established tree. Y’all give this brown thumb hope of turning green - 7 totes up and running on my deck!

      I have a six foot fence around my garden. So far the mule deer haven't been hungry enough to bother leaping it. They tend to just mosey around as they find plenty to eat on the outside. Thanks.

    Robbie, have you ever or are you or Gary growing taro? I just 2 days ago found out that I can seasonally grow it, and that it's actually a type of "elephant ear"! I bought 2 organic "roots" of taro and turmeric each from Kroger. Great addition to a food forest, don't you think?

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I grow a small cultivar that I bought from an Indian market. It has a small leaf and only grows maybe a couple of feet tall. Not as impressive as the larger but doesn't overwhelm my ponds. Yes Taro is a great addition to add variety.

      @@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy Thank you for the reply! That gives me a lot more confidence in going forward with this project. I'm not "in the know" as far as the cultivar of mine, so if it's one of the bigger sizes, I'll just move it to a more suitable spot and put it to work protecting my "out of season" plants that can't tolerate the heat to hopefully extend their lives. Hopefully I can have a win win situation!😊🍀☀️🌴🌡🌱🥬
      Much love and God bless.

      The fish and the Dragonfly nymphs clear out the wrigglers. When the adult dragonflies emerge they eat a huge number of flying mosquitos.

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are in buckets with soil. The bottom has side holes and sits in water. The soil where the carrots are growing is above the water line and the water is wicked up to the carrots.
