Robbie I put this video in my "Key Videos" list. So much helpful information! This weekend was "bulky waste" pickup in my neighborhood. Everyone put their junk on the sidewalks and I found so many great things for my garden! I filled my backseat and trunk full of stuff. It was better than trick or treat!

Hello Robbie! Thank you for all of your videos. I've started my tote garden, thanks to you! I've got 18 grey sterilite 18 gallon totes lined up in my driveway. (You were right about the color grey! They look great!) They are all almost full, using your instructions. LOVED filling the bottoms with all of the twigs from around my yard, and my kitchen garden scraps. Hopefully, I will get them planted in the next week or so. I want it to warm up a bit more first.
I've also purchased a bunch of grey bathroom wastebaskets from Walmart. They turned out to make a perfect tower garden on top of the totes. Two wastebaskets, side by side, fit perfectly in about one half or less of the totes, so there is still room for a nice big plant in the tote.
    An idea for a video...
I'm having trouble making decisions as to what should go in the bottom totes, and what should be planted in the upper containers, which are about 1 gallon each. My mode of operation would be to spend all my time worrying about wasting the space in the totes with small plants, and never end up making up my mind and putting seeds in the dirt. Since I am just getting started, I can't afford to waste the bigger containers. For instance, how big of a container does a pepper need? If I put them in a tote, how many plants? Can you give us some suggestions as to what vegetables should go in what size container, and how many plants could go in each.? If I do some smaller 6 inch pots, would that work for a 3rd top level, and what would I plant in them? Would they work for strawberries, or should they be in the 1 gallon containers? What about herbs? . That would make a great video.
These are some of the things I will be planting... I know it's an ambitious list. Does it sound like I am on the right track?
    18 GALLON TOTE:
    bell pepper
    hot pepper, jalapeno
    zuchinni
    tomato, (large, indeterminate growth)
    tomato, (smaller determinate growth)
red and russet potatoes (are you doing potatoes in your totes?)
    sweet potato
    watermelon
    cantaloupe
    crenshaw melon
    Ground cherries
    1 GALLON WASTEBASKET SIZE CONTAINER:
    peas
    carrots, half long
    raddish
    romaine lettuce
    strawberries, 1 per container
    6 INCH DIAMETER CONTAINER
Various herbs: oregano, cilantro, sage, thyme, rosemary, lime basil
16 INCH DIAMETER CONTAINTERS, REGULAR PLANT POTS, live plants:
dwarf bush-style raspberry hybridized for containers
dwarf bush-style blackberry hybridized for containers
    dwarf blueberry hybridized for containers
    dwarf everbearing mulberry
    pomegranate?
I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO PUT THESE! arggghhh:
    lettuce, romaine
    yellow, white, and red onions
    leeks
    shallots
garlic (can garlic be in a shallower container that the 18 gallon tote?)
    beets
Thank you so much, Robbie. I love your videos!
    Marianne

Robbie - I haven’t begun to grow any food yet but I’ve learned so much from you. I had sprouted some flower seeds and was sitting them outside during the day on the rail around the deck. I had the little peat pots in a tray. I went out one day and the whole tray was upside down on the floor of the deck. I knew what happened. A bird had landed on one side of the tray and flipped it. Because of you, I knew exactly what to do. I went in and got my toulle. And I put a brick in the tray! Thank you. I also learned something new from tonight’s video so thanks again!

I almost gave up gardening. My big pots where I composted in place /planted were too deep and tapered. However, the totes are a perfect depth and growing area.

I pulled a big tote off a trashpile but then worried what they may have had in it. Ebay had 8 totes 18 gallons for $50.77 +tax and they will be here today. Our temps went into the 20's so now I will be preparing for next spring. I think the only other things I can grow outside is collards. I had some real thin flowerpot that had small slits and I was going to throw them out & then I thought line it with tulle and use again. Robbie, you are making us become more creative. These 8 totes will be making compost. Love you and Gary ♥

I use the lids for totes as trays under a tote to catch run off water for another container sitting there- fertilizer. Works good for bottom holes or the few grow bags I have. Also the tote lids blocks weeds. But I want to start cutting some labels from them too. Have you tried the slats from old blinds, for labels? Thank you for this video. Hi Gary and Kitty.

Can you help me understand about spacing of plants inside the totes? The tags make it seem like I’d need acres to grow even a medium sized garden. Which plants should only have one single plant per tote? Do you have a specific video that addresses spacing? Thank you for any help and thank you for making these videos!

I wish I had birds like you, all I have are blue jays that run off any bird that happens by and I don't have hardly any little birds, but, I keep putting out the food, hoping

Hi! New subscriber here. I live on Tahoe at 7000ft. The squirrels won’t leave my plants alone. I was looking for another way to grow and I’ve found your channel. Do you have any videos about approximate how many for example cabbages you grow in your containers?

Would you please put a link where you buy your totes by the case. I've driven to four Wal-Mart's and they are sold out. Thank you!!!!!!

I don't have the extra money for 6 dollar containers each,
how about Dollar Store buckets, I can get 6 buckets instead for a dollar each- will that work? You are lucky to have thrift stores open, our thrift stores have been closed during the shutdown and our best church thrift has shut down permanently, sad.

I bought a few of the dollar buckets and sadly, they broke too soon.
I didn't look at the bottom so they may not even be food safe. Pls check.

Questions ..can you use tree bark? We have these big silver maple trees that are really messy and keep shedding its bark..also can you put woods chips on top to help with moisture? I make my own cards with different 12 x 12 cardstock and mostly coloured could I use it shredded in the totes as well? Your video of the birds is beautiful!!
