    I just discovered your channel. I've always wanted to garden but all the videos I watched were so complicated and you needed to spend so much money. Since I don't know what I'm doing spending money on something I might kill would just deter me cause I don't have much money to spare. I've been binge watching your videos and every video I'm like "I can do this, I can do this". You explain it so well and you don't waste money. I love the tub and chair idea! And for the first time EVER composting makes sense and seems doable. I'm gonna have a small garden on my deck this spring. Thank you!!

    Hi. Robbie . I have been learning about compost and planting on my own by reading and going in u tube since 1993 it has been a long journey. This year 2019 am gonna try your method with the compost under the plant containers. It seems simple but I think it make a lot of sense . Am in queens, ny and probably some things won’t work but that’s ok. Am still gonna try. Your energy feeds my energy. As soon as winter is leaving I start with seeds in the house until it gets a little warm and then I plant in containers. This year for the 1st time I did the small cup to start the seeds and it’s working . It’s been better than other methods that I learn before. I wish you was my neighbor. I have no neighbors that really grow vegetables. Also was gonna say that I have not found any wood chips to cover the container tops. Thank you and your husband ( Gary) for taking out time to keep us busy learning from your experiences. Thank You

    • @MarielasSister
      @MarielasSister 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@siry5164 honestly I don't know about maggots, from what I understand they are the larvae for flies. They're good in the sense that they will help break down the decaying matter, however they will eventually turn into flies. So take it with a grain of salt. I don't want to encourage flies or their larvae but if they're already there then I just focus on the silver lining that they will speed up the compost and wait until they become flies and fly away or catch them with a fly trap. Wish I had a better solution but that's the only I could think of.

      @@siry5164 oh almost forgot... I've never grown potatoes well sort of. I have some growing now in a 5 gallon bucket but haven't attempted to harvest yet so I have no real knowledge about growing potatoes. As for a cardboard box, I don't think it will hold up to the expansion of the potatoes but if you have some sprouting potatoes and want to give it a try let us know how your experiment works out. I wish I could be of more help. I'm a gardener... in theory. I watch A LOT of gardening videos but this is the first year I have actually attempted to grow an actual vegetable garden. I remember back in 70's I was working at bait shop beside the lake and to my shock, we were stocking those maggots (gross) in the cooler with other worms. They came in different colors like they were dyed. The fishmen loved them as the fish were biting them like hell. I remember watching dead fish on the ground and it was full of maggots and they turned into flies as that is what I have been told. If you see maggots, just throw them in lake as fish will love it or maybe dig deeper in the ground and buried them, maybe that would keep them from turning into flies. Just an idea. I don't know about. Just what I learned 40 years ago.

We were selling them along with other worms, crickets, minnows, catfish baits, hooks, fishing supplies, and hamburgers I cook. But fish love those maggots. I had a blonde duck pet that I call Donald Duck. Whenever I cleaned out the cricket box and I would feed dead crickets and dead minnows to my pet duck. We moved away and then about six months later we came to visit the bait shop store as we were going fishing and I could see flock of ducks way way out on the lake maybe 400 yards maybe farther away. So I wonder if my pet duck still out there, so I yelled Donald Duck, Donald Duck, Donald Duck few times and to my surprise I was shocked that Donald Duck alone flapped flapped fast and swimming toward me. I look forward to your new posts. This one is great because I can share it with my friends to help explain the technique in detail. You have a following of a group of us here in N. Calif. This technique has revolutionized my home garden of 30+ years. I had composted and done vermiculture, gradually moving toward "chop-and-drop" techniques but this put it all together for me. It seems ideal for small urban gardens. One thing I've been wondering is how you have tomatoes that survive the winter. It must be that much warmer there than where I am in Calif.

      I'm in Las Vegas ,in an apartment and I have a few questions.(I also have tomatoes started from organic tomatoes in the compost pile in September that have survived 28 degrees on my patio )
      I want to set up a 3 tier Tower(+) on my cement patio . I can't put holes on the bottom of my containers. My idea is to put cement blocks with holes about an inch to an inch and a half up that I can use the drain water as compost tea.I'm also going to buy some worms because we have none here.
      Think it will work?

    Do you have a video talking about adding minerals to your compost soil? I love what you do but I am curious how do you add trace elements and other beneficial things a soil would need, not just the compost.

    Excellent video. Now I know how to start. Can I use cedar chips in the compost? Thank you for your time.

      I would think using cedar would be possible but cedar is desired for its resistance to rot so works better as a mulch.

    Robbie, I LOVE your videos. So informative and fun!
    I have done many of the things you suggest. Question. I have a concern about “jumping worms”. I live in NC and we have some that come in on pine needle mulch. They have stripped the soil and eaten all around the young roots on the top 3 inches of soil of a yoshino shiny cherry tree. And left castings that have NOTHING in it. The soil looks like coffee grounds.
    Have you run into this yet and how would you use your compost of how would you get rid of that compost in order to not have those jumping worms transfer to your garden?

      You can. . I have done that with rabbits, cows, chickens, pigs, and horses manure. It depends how long they been aged as you can't put fresh ones in your garden. Wait at least 2 or 3 weeks they aged.

    Thank you so much for this information. Now I feel I could compost and it is not going to break my back doing it. I really appreciate how you re-use everything. I am a person who likes to go to thrift shops, so I can find these plastic bins for a buck or two at a thrift shop. Could you tell me, can I use cardboard boxes instead of wood chips? I have no access to wood chips. Also are wood chips the same as mulch? Right now mulch is pretty cheap.

    I had tried composting with kitchen scraps before, then I had a problem with ants going into the tub and having their fill of food. How do you keep ants out without using any poisons, etc.? Also I am transitioning my indoor cat away from clay litter and using kiln dried wood pellets. When they pee on them, they breakdown into sawdust. I've seen people say you can use this around your plants but not sure if that's good for vegetable gardening. The poop of course is not used, scooped out and thrown in the trash. What is your thought on these two issues??......Mirsades

    You can also put a layer of newspapers on top or plastic or both to keep soil from drying out😊
