I just discovered your channel. I've always wanted to garden but all the videos I watched were so complicated and you needed to spend so much money. Since I don't know what I'm doing spending money on something I might kill would just deter me cause I don't have much money to spare. I've been binge watching your videos and every video I'm like "I can do this, I can do this". You explain it so well and you don't waste money. I love the tub and chair idea! And for the first time EVER composting makes sense and seems doable. I'm gonna have a small garden on my deck this spring. Thank you!!
A small garden will be so easy and perfect, and I do my composting like Mother Nature, after all, I think she knows best, take care, WARNING: once you start, your small garden could end up really big as you want more and more, 🤣
Me tooo!! I am going to get my kitchen scraps out tomarro to start my first tub!!! So excited shes such a awesome teacher blew my mind how easy she makes it look!! composting made sense to me was mind blowing!! Love this video!! Hope it works out for me thx Robbie!!! First time I hv been so excited during the crazy pandemic. Veggies and fruit so expensive I spend so much on berries, greens its crazy. Thx again.
Hi. Robbie . I have been learning about compost and planting on my own by reading and going in u tube since 1993 it has been a long journey. This year 2019 am gonna try your method with the compost under the plant containers. It seems simple but I think it make a lot of sense . Am in queens, ny and probably some things won’t work but that’s ok. Am still gonna try. Your energy feeds my energy. As soon as winter is leaving I start with seeds in the house until it gets a little warm and then I plant in containers. This year for the 1st time I did the small cup to start the seeds and it’s working . It’s been better than other methods that I learn before. I wish you was my neighbor. I have no neighbors that really grow vegetables. Also was gonna say that I have not found any wood chips to cover the container tops. Thank you and your husband ( Gary) for taking out time to keep us busy learning from your experiences. Thank You
Thank you so much! This was so helpful. Our winters are so cold, that I wasn't sure if any of it would compost but I do think your ideas and suggestions will really help.
Excellent! Wish I had seen this several months ago before I wasted so much because I didn't have my big bin ready. Dang. I learned a lot here. Composting made simple. I love the idea of putting the hardware mesh on and then the pots. It will keep doggo out.
I love your innovative and cost-saving methods! Compost making is like making earth gold! Buying compost is so expensive, and you can never have enough so if we can find ways to compost (even a worm bin indoors in an apartment or on a balcony or patio space!) I love your channel and what you and Gary do and share with us here! Thank you!
Outstanding video! You are so right! I am committed to create my own compost this year!!! Gary looking for his wire inserted into the video was priceless!!!
Robbie, I always enjoy your videos in the garden. Thank you for sharing your great ideas. I have used many of them successfully. Love the red top on you, a good color. Catherine
Love how u grow. My son and I have begun our Robbie gardening. Collards & Kale have their own little compost inside their pots! And as of yesterday we set up a purple dragon radish row! I have noticed all around the garden little Robbie vignettes mini gardens within themselves ♥️🌿gotta love it‼️🧑🌾🌻🐝 your friend, Jill
Thank you so much for your video(s), especially for the ones you made in composting and making your own soil. I'm trying to learn enough to get started with at least a little gardening. This video was the one that had me out in my yard this morning, setting up my first bin. By the way, I thought I wouldn't have enough material to get started. I don't exactly live out in the nature. But it turns out, the amount of half rotten leaves and paper and cardboard and garden clippings I was able to find around the house would have been enough to get several bins started.
Thank you for all the great ideas!!! I get tons of crate or pickup truck full of mulch for free from my local recycle center. They collect the local tree, leaves and branches that they break down and where I live they will let me take as much as I can howl out. I use it for my compost and layering my garden bed.
I'm here because someone mentioned you in a gardening group. I do have an earth machine compost bin I got for free a few months ago and I add everything like you do but nothing seems to be breaking down and I water it but after watching this video I'm thinking I'm not watering enough. So happy I found you.
I've watched you videos about making a composting bin and I've started one. Can I cover it with the bin top or should I leave it uncovered? I live in Alabama and we have lots of rain. I've drilled holes in the bin so no water will sit in it. Thanks! I love your videos and have transformed by backyard!
I look forward to your new posts. This one is great because I can share it with my friends to help explain the technique in detail. You have a following of a group of us here in N. Calif. This technique has revolutionized my home garden of 30+ years. I had composted and done vermiculture, gradually moving toward "chop-and-drop" techniques but this put it all together for me. It seems ideal for small urban gardens. One thing I've been wondering is how you have tomatoes that survive the winter. It must be that much warmer there than where I am in Calif.
I'm in Las Vegas ,in an apartment and I have a few questions.(I also have tomatoes started from organic tomatoes in the compost pile in September that have survived 28 degrees on my patio ) I want to set up a 3 tier Tower(+) on my cement patio . I can't put holes on the bottom of my containers. My idea is to put cement blocks with holes about an inch to an inch and a half up that I can use the drain water as compost tea.I'm also going to buy some worms because we have none here. Think it will work? Thank you Patricia Kurschinski
We are warmer than you, yes, but I have thoughts as to maybe ways to get some to survive the winter if you have NO snow, I am working on a Q and A, so I can get my thoughts more in detail....Keep an eye out for it. Thank you SO SO very much, Robbie
I attempted to keep my tomatoes going thru the winter this year by having them in black large tubs so they would catch as much heat as possible using the compost in place methods. It seems they ALMOST made it but by January they had died back. I'm keeping a few rooted just in case there is still some life there.
You are so cute and I love everything you do! I do the same thing but I never thought of putting the shredded paper in there! Great idea thank you Blessings.
I love the way you seem to mention the easy way you plant zucchinis. I am using your technique this Spring in Melbourne Australia. I love the large zucchinis stuffed. The shops dont sell the large ones so I'm happy growing mine until the perfect size. Thank you so much for all your tips.
Thank you for sharing all this information, I’m from El Salvador in Central America and trying to start growing our own food 🤩✨ I would like to have an idea of what kind of organic kitchen scraps you would not recommend to throw on your compost starter? Thanks again I really appreciate your teachings ❤✨ 8:38
Hi Robbie. Because it snows in ny I cannot plant outside during those month. I do keep doing compost in my basement and outside in a compost bin. Have no choice but to do micro greens in winter.
great video robbie, i started a bin like this in the back yard, it is sitting on a pile of snow, i guess it will begin decomposing in the spring. meanwhile, i just keep adding to it.
I know this is an older video, but have you switched to making holes a bit higher on the side now as opposed to the bottom? So a bit of water stays in the base and wicks up? Is one better then the other? Do side holes not risk root rot?
Either will work, will depend on where you live, here we are dry, so holes up holds some water for the plants, and holes down on the ground will bring in roots from trees for us. Thanks
I too know that this is an older video, but if anyone might by chance know, do your compost bins need to be slightly shaded or is full sun not an issue, asking from Arizona
I have most in full sun, But if you feel in the summer it gets to hot for the earthworms, you can just creat some shade on it. Keep in mind if you’re growing plants in the tote as you’re composing in place, the plants will create their own shade.
GENIUS! Just found you - bought some totes and potting soil - have a stack of news paper in the garage. Have tried container gardening before but it didn't do as well as I wanted... but THIS year .. 😁
I love your videos and they are making me excited to garden again. I followed some of the other gardening videos on TH-cam and they were "buy this and buy that and you will have a successful garden". Well I bought stuff and it didn't work. Now I live in an apartment with a small patio. How would you do drainage? I don't want to stain the cement.
Did you figure the drainage out in a workable way? I would think a duplicate' catchment' bin at the bottom with a couple of bricks or rocks in between would work. And it would allow you to reuse the drained water.
Hi Robbie, Do I have to wait until it completely decomposes before I can plant in it or can I use it when it's partially decomposed? Could I use that straight or would I need to mix in potting soil to the compost before planting? Will it decompose faster if I keep the lid on my tote or keep the lid off? Thank you so much I enjoy your videos, they inspire me. God bless you real good✝️💚🌻🌿🍅🌿🥕🌱🌽
My Collie mix would lift the wire mesh and take it away. Then its a search to find it and make sure you don't run over it with the lawn mower this spring. :)
I've have garbage pail I'm using for compost but it seems to be taking so long to break down. I wonder if I need more holes for drainage so I don't kill the worms/maggots...???? I use a big stick to turn it every once in a while but now I wonder if I even have to do that???
Do you have a video talking about adding minerals to your compost soil? I love what you do but I am curious how do you add trace elements and other beneficial things a soil would need, not just the compost.
Thank you so much for this information. Now I feel I could compost and it is not going to break my back doing it. I really appreciate how you re-use everything. OMG Yes, I will be setting this up in a part of my yard where the gophers keep coming up, SO this will work for you! Super Great question, thanks, Robbie (I am going to get together a Q and A on this video so I can get more into detail)
Robbie, I LOVE your videos. So informative and fun! I have done many of the things you suggest. Question. I have a concern about “jumping worms”. And left castings that have NOTHING in it. The soil looks like coffee grounds. Have you run into this yet and how would you use your compost of how would you get rid of that compost in order to not have those jumping worms transfer to your garden?
Hi Barbara, no but I do toss that into my compost in place bins. For my compost tea, I usually only add in yellowing leaves, or green leaves, like kale and collard and whatever, and use that as my compost tea in a few days when it breaks down and starts to smell. Sugar should be find to add in if you want, thanks Robbie
Hi Mrs Robbie.... Can u freeze the scraps until ready to take outside ? Thank u for the good information. I really like your property and Its SooooooTrue, Our children/ grown ups too / need to know how to grow and understand where real authentic food come from Great Point.

Tx, as a mature single woman, This works great and is easy, organic, light and a good size for my small garden! TX again
You could just add a wet layer of cardboard on top to help brake it down faster.
I will try that! I have lots of cardboard!
Good idea! I often tear newspaper strips
Love your and Gary's comedy snippets in between. Lol.
Outstanding video! You are so right! I am committed to create my own compost this year!!! Gary looking for his wire inserted into the video was priceless!!!
I love all of her composting videos 😍
Thank you!
You’re so cleaver, thanks for all the great tips❤
Thank you for sharing. I do believe The Lord lead me to your channel, because I do need this knowledge. God bless you and your family.

I just put the lid on that came with the tote after throwing all the layers in & makes sure there’s some earthworms - no problem with pests😊
Your method of composting seems the most easiest!!! I enjoyed the video and learned more about composting!!

hi Robbie, made me laugh on this video you are a pro. I loved the way you work in the garden with your hat on and bucket on hand. Thumbs up!!!.
Nice video. You made me excited to start composting before spring comes.
It is never too early to start getting this together, nor is it ever too late. THANKS, Robbie

Just love to, thanks so much, Robbie
Thanks for sharing this is on my list to do💜
I love my tubs, the vegetable plants grow great in them, thanks, Robbie
Great video! You make it so simple🌺
Very good info 👍💛🌺
Thanks 😊
Thank you for answering my question😁😁😁
Great info for beginner. Thank you.
Great video Robbie!
YOU ARE THE GREATEST WOW!!!!
Thank you so much! 😊 Take care, Robbie
Thanks for all the information! Very helpful! Are cedar chips helpful in gardening. I have some and don’t know what to use them for.
Love the video! Keep up the good work.

My Collie mix would lift the wire mesh and take it away. Then its a search to find it and make sure you don't run over it with the lawn mower this spring. :)
baahaha.. that little bugger! ;-)
I am a person who likes to go to thrift shops, so I can find these plastic bins for a buck or two at a thrift shop. Could you tell me, can I use cardboard boxes instead of wood chips? Robbie , you look great wearing red. Can this set up keeping gophers and moles away?Thank you for sharing.
OMG Yes, I will be setting this up in a part of my yard where the gophers keep coming up, SO this will work for you! Super Great question, thanks, Robbie (I am going to get together a Q and A on this video so I can get more into detail)
As always great info!!! Thanks!!!
Love it because it's easy to do
Excellent video. Now I know how to start. Can I use cedar chips in the compost? Thank you for your time.
I would think using cedar would be possible but cedar is desired for its resistance to rot so works better as a mulch.
Nice information
Thank you! Robbie
Hi i do the same thing i have compost growing in tubs but i just add worms in it i dont drill holes underneath them
Very informative thanks for sharing. Can I bury my kitchen scraps instead
Oh Yes, watch my short NEW video, should answer all your questions, THANK YOU, Robbie th-cam.com/video/FAUvIz0Pse0/w-d-xo.html
great ideas thanks!
Thank you!! Robbie
Can I use coffee and tea grounds at all?
Robbie, I LOVE your videos. So informative and fun!
I have done many of the things you suggest. Question. I have a concern about “jumping worms”. I live in NC and we have some that come in on pine needle mulch. They have stripped the soil and eaten all around the young roots on the top 3 inches of soil of a yoshino shiny cherry tree. And left castings that have NOTHING in it. The soil looks like coffee grounds.
Have you run into this yet and how would you use your compost of how would you get rid of that compost in order to not have those jumping worms transfer to your garden?
Are the jumping worms still a big problem for you?
Do you rinse your eggshells before putting them in the compost? I just discovered your videos and I love them!
why did you not put the water mam,the other was using water
LOL ;-) I must eats me spinach! What a goofball. ;-) You crack me up! LOL
You can also put a layer of newspapers on top or plastic or both to keep soil from drying out😊
Thanks 😊
HI Robbie, red is your color! Beautiful. Hi Gary. Question: do you ever add sugar to your compost tea? Saw that somewhere and am wondering.
Hi thanks for the great info Wondering if you can throw bones 🦴 in there also?
These are wonderful videos. Is your content any in writing? I’d love to have a reference for how to do much of this to quickly reference.
Thank you!
Great video! By the way what do you feed all them humming birds?
Your videos are perfect!! When compost in the winter can you put the lid to the tub on?
Hi Mrs Robbie.... Can u freeze the scraps until ready to take outside ? Thank u for the good information. I really like your property and Its SooooooTrue, Our children/ grown ups too / need to know how to grow and understand where real authentic food come from Great Point.
I do and it’s stays fresh until I put it in the compost
Good idea about freezing till you ready to compost them.
Sure
We have groundhogs that have always foiled my composting attempts.
When I have to add few more kitchen scraps after few days.. wouldn't roots tat penetrated into compost get disturbed/killed?
Can I put ivy vines in the compost bin? I have heard no but also yes so I would like to get your opinion or anyone else's here! Love your channel, live in the OC.
