My mechanic told me it would cost me $200 and 3 hours of my time to fix this for me. I did this by myself for $8 and 10 minutes of my time. You just saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you for making this video.
After watching the video, does anyone else have the music going through your head while repairing the shifter? Excellent video and very helpful. The big “U” shaped black part has specific holes it fits into, so make sure to line up the part with the holes that hold it, made it way easier to get it on correctly after I figured that out.
BEST VIDEO to show you step by step how to do this. Glad I found it, the other videos didnt even show me HOW to take everything apart and back together, piece by piece. Awesome 😁
All the reviews on Amazon says to watch TH-cam I'm betting your video is the one everyone is watching. Very straight forward. Great job. Will be using the video when parts come in :-)
Great video! Was struggling to get this done following other tutorials, but your video was by far the easiest to follow along. I can finally use my car again!
I've had my sonic for 3 years now and am finally selling it. I've had the entire button contraption broken and since about the time I got it. Finally needed to replace it for the new owner. This video was immensely helpful
I hate this stupid car; I wasted a lot of time getting stuck in here and missed appointments on time. I drove around like 1.5 hours to find a car service shop and came back home without fixing anything. Now I have to wait another 10 days until the parts arrive from Amazon but your video is awesome! Thank you
Dude, you are a legend. This stuck button issue has been bugging me for 2 years and now it works again just like brand new without having to use my finger nails to pull up the top to release the button. Didn't know how easy it was or I would have replaced it long ago. The hardest part was figuring out which direction to put in the black jobber that slides in the spring. Thank you for such an idiot-proof video!
As others have said, this is the best video on this subject out there. Shows all the parts in the kit and how to use each one - especially the spring, which was impossible to see in most other videos. Like others, I had difficulty getting the plastic U piece on afterwards. I actually broke a tab off of one side, and had to put the original back on. At that point I used more force to keep the part as open as I could to minimize stress on the side tabs. At one point I also knocked loose the up/down manual shift button and was grateful that it went back on its hinges with a little bit of fiddling. I think the U finally went on when I focused on getting the manual shift side on, then got the bottom tabs to seat, and lastly got the side tab on the passenger side to go in. Hope that helps someone else - or really, that you find it easier than I did :)
Thank you dude for this video, I was just tripping when my gear shifter knob broke!! I got to be at work in the morning and they would write me up in a heartbeat no matter what makes me late!! Thank you thank you thank you!! You are the bomb!!
Best video out there on the subject. Used it today to fix my 2013 that had been broken for three years now. Straight forward and good angles. Dealer wanted to charge $250 to replace.
Excellent video! Ordered the part from Amazon and it was here in two days, fixed this in about an hour. Appreciate showing the procedure up close. Thanks 😊
This video 100% fixed my 2014 Chevy Sonic ! Shifter was often stuck in Park, requiring 4-5 attempts to move to reverse or drive. A stuck shift button occasionally would also prevent key removal. I ordered the kit from Amazon and it took about 45 minutes to remove parts and replace with new. I found a broken spring and shift button causing my issues. Thank you so much for saving me time and money at the dealership ! Highly recommended !
Thank you so much. I was hesitant since I'm a single gal that's not very handy. Removing and inserting the pin was challenging for me but other than that it went well. The visual was nice. I could easily pause/start the video as I needed. Glad it is all fixed!
Excellent video. Easy to see exactly how the parts come apart and go back together. Actually I got my repair kit on Amazon for $13, about a third of the price from GM.
Thank you so much for this! Been having the sticking issue for a while now and finally ordered the kit off amazon, $20. I have a 2014 sonic. Great instructions, quick and easy. I paused the video several times and went out to the car (watched it on my 65 inch so I could see better) and did the steps. I was worried about taking the little rubber piece off the old part because i was afraid it would break, kinda hard to remove and to put on the new part. I guess if u did break it could always super glue/airplane glue it on the new piece. Also had a hard time putting the pin back in because i put the silver shift button on too soon, so make sure to put the pin in first! Good stuff, thank you again!
Thank you so much for this! I just had this issue and I am glad I found a quick fix for it. Its really infuriating how GM was so reckless in producing so many vehicles with this safety hazard. They really deserve a lawsuit for such irresponsible practices, the original part is terribly designed.
Thanks. Unfortunately I already paid an auto shop $150 to "fix" it. All they did was lube it up and 3 days later it was failing again. I am ordering this part today and will do it myself...for free. Thanks for the video.
@@Scooter_911 It worked! I struggled a little trying to get the rubber cover that goes over the button/sides of the shifter back on, but finally got it. I'm not a mechanical kind of guy, but it still took only about 15 minutes, and I took my time to ensure I didn't lose any pieces. That little rod is tiny. I already have some curved needle nose pliers so I cannot imagine how much more challenging it would have been without it. Thanks again. I'll be coming back to your channel in the future.
Thanks for your video, I just fixed my 2012 chevy sonic shifter button !!! the spring on mine went bad it was sticking every time i changed my gear shift , now it works like brand new. And I agree BEST VIDEO!!!!!
@@lindsaylylick1984I didn’t get a reply. I just put everything in without the rubber tip. My gear shift has been working like normal since I did this fix. You should be ok.
Amazing to me that GM would create such a cheaply designed OEM part that is just waiting to fail. Don't think I've ever seen a shifter button fail on any of my other GM cars in the past until this happened with my Mother-in-law's Sonic. The fact that there are third-party kits available on Amazon tells me that this is EXTREMELY common for the Sonic...something that should have been a warranty repair for ALL owners. THANKS for this video...quick and to the point, step by step instructions...THANKS SO MUCH Garret!
Love it! My key kept getting stuck for about a year but kept avoiding it because I thought it would be expensive. But the button broke off a few days ago. Ended up fixing it in less than ten minutes after the piece came in. And only paid $18 for parts on Amazon.
Just ordered kit for girlfriend's car. Sticking. Not sure if it's broken yet. I can't believe this isn't a recall from GM. Ford ain't the best but the littlest things I've had recalls for on my Ford. This should have been a recall for how many fail.

You really saved my butt with this video because my button broke this morning on my way to work but i already had the kit in my car because i thought it was a cosmetic refresh kit. Little did I know it was a freak miracle. Again Thanks a million!
Chevy dealership said I need a whole shifter. $800 with labor. Highway robbery. Will find someone to make this easy fix for me. Thanks. Been sticking for some time.
My shifter is cracked. Barely got my replacement kit today, although, it doesn't come with a spring. I'm sure it's still in there but all in all, Thank you for the video. I'll have to do this in the morning or so because right now it's 2am, lol.
Thank you so much for posting! This is the only place on the net that I could find that shows how to install the revised button. I did have a problem with the new black cover rubbing against the manual shift buttons but we don't use them anyway. When I get time I'll take an exacto blade and try trimming it back for clearance.
So helpful! My button literally came out of the shifter and my car could only go in Neutral or Drive. I some how finagled it back in but will be ordering this kit to change it out
Thank you so much I ignored the recall notice that I recevied years ago and mine broke about a week ago but thanks to your video I was able to get the replacement kit cheap and was able to fix it with my dads help using your video.
Extremely detailed video. Used it today to fix a 2015 Sonic. Had some trouble getting the U-shaped piece back on as I was worried about flexing it too much. I do wish Chevy would have included the rubber gasket that had to be salvaged from the original piece. Many thanks, Garret!
Hey man thanks alot, this video helped me save money and was straight to the point. my shifter had this problem too, it would freak me out when the button would be stuck when driving as i could just knock it into reverse/park with my elbow.
How does that shifter knob fit on the stem? GM " U " shaped clip? Like the old 90's and up " T " handles? Still looks like the same inside ( pushing a white spring loaded rod in the hollow stem)
Great video for this job. Thanks so much. Great music too. I want it on my “shed” playlist. A word of warning for RHD versions like the Holden Barina. This kit appears to be for LHD sticks. The black wrap around is the wrong orientation for RHD. No biggie as you can just reuse the original.
Thank you for the video I appreciate it Only question for anybody reading , when I push in the button now (repaired) I get a clicking sound in the dash , is it normal ? Did I pinch a wire possibly? It shifts now but the clicking sound is weird Thank you
The clicking sound is probably the brake switch lock-out. It may have been making that sound the whole time but you always pay closer attention to small things after you take things apart
@@Scooter_911I found out I'm going to have to replace the entire gear shift anyway. Originally I thought it was the knob but I've been told that it's not the problem
