2006 Impala shifter problems

  • 2006 Impala shifter electrical wire plug in. Broken wires are common on these models, wher the wire connector plug, moves with the shifter. Because of the wires being small guage and very short travel distance they break easily. Symptms of a broken connection, key will not turn off switch or will be stuck in switch, shifter may not release from park and stay in locked position. Some simular models are the same around this year.

    I couldn't get the shifter out of park so watching your video helped me fix the problem. Took the console out then some of the electrical tape was removed from the wires and walla there was a broken black wire. Stripped the ends of the wire, joined them with a butt connector, wrapped it with electrical tape and it works. cost 10 cents Thank you

    I am so happy that this video was put up. It fixed my problems and am able to put my car in park instead of leaving it in neutral with the e-brake on. And I was able to put my steering column back together so now I dont have to hit the release solenoid to get the key out. Thanks a million if i knew you personally i would pay you $250. That's half the dealership wanted to charge me for a $5 fix.

    Thanks for the video, helping grammy with her car and its always good to have video of a repair.
    The replacement wire harness info if anyone is wondering is "GM PART NUMBER IS 12125665, AND IS ALSO SOLD UNDER NEW PART 13583923, OR AC-DELCO # PT3923".
    Also there is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for this issue # #08-07-30-007B: EI08045. Which means Chevy knows about the issue but there is no recall and they can charge for the work.

    Son called n said car would not shift from park. This video is awesome. We reached under the trim wiggles the wires and got the car home. We followed the video and removed the center council. The black ground wire was broke off the harness. We cut the connector used a paper clip to get the metal connector out of the plug and soldered the wire and reinserted the connector into the harness. A blue slide in PC holds the connectors in place After reinstalling everything it worked great. Tx guy

    Thanks so much. I just fixed my mom's car. Pep Boys auto parts has the small metal connectors needed to repair the wire so I didn't need to buy the one you showed and then remove the wire from that to use. I'm sure that I'll be back in there again to repair the rest of them at some point. Thank you again you saved me a lot of money on repair bills. I'm sure that Chevy would have charged an arm and a leg to do the same thing I did for $5.00 at the parts store...

    Sir, this video just saved me several hundred dollars for sure! I have an 09 Impala, and the gear shift locked up in park just a couple days ago. I found your video, took it apart, and sure enough, my black wire was out. I had a little trouble figuring out how to unplug the connector, but once that happened, the wire crimping repair was rather simple. I agree that a video of the wire repair process would have been helpful, but hey, no worries! Thank you very much for this video!

    • @mskid68
      @mskid68  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elizabeth Johnson Just in case you were needing only the wire to replace inside of the shifter plug, It is from an Upper thermostat sending unit, on a 1994 Z74 V8, the pigtail for that is what I'd ask for. I hope this and the other reply has helped. I'm on guard if needed.. lol and I try to keep check on any questions I may be able to answer.. Thanks again.

      Will that fit on a 2010 Chevy Impala? Also, my car want crank start up down. Everything will come on inside the car. Radio, lights, Ac

    • @mskid68
      @mskid68  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elizabeth Johnson That pigtail plug, is like a lot of other plug connectors and is just a cheap way to replace without going to a dealer. It will be easy when you see that the wire is just pushed into the connector, the little metal piece that catches and holds it just needs pushed down and it releases the wire. The starting, if it was starting before replacing the wire, yes it should start. If it doesn't, you may also need a cable adjustment. We will save that till you know if it will start.

I took my car to a dealer and they kept telling me that it needed a new ignition etc. labor and, technical work required was going to cost me 1500 all said and done. turns out they were lying and, they wanted to charge as much as possible. I diagnosed that the purple wire had broke free. I only need to get a new harness and I will be back in business thanks once again.

      ***** How did you get the wires connected

    • @mskid68
      @mskid68  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elizabeth Johnson Thanks for watching, I'm not sure if you mean the actual connector, so I'll start with it. If you look inside of the connector from the front, the actual wire is "kind of snapped" into it, and if you take something small enough to push down the catch that is part of the actual plug that locks the wire in place, you can push it down and it will release the wire. I used a cheap upper thermostat connector for a 94 V8 Chevy.. It will release the wire the same. Then just push the wire into the old plug, then you have a longer wire to splice with. I then used "Butt connectors" to splice the new into the old. I'd also use electrical tape or heat shrink tubing, to protect from shorting out the spliced wires. I hope this helps you, Give me a shout back if not. I will keep in touch if needed.

    Thanks for the video! Accomplished this on 07 Impala. Video and tips were right on. Shifter was stuck in Park - it was a broken green wire. I elected to purchase the $20 pig tail (AC Delco part # PT3923), cut to desired length, cut off old plug and splice on new pig tail. Works like new. The 7mm bolts are also Philips screw driver friendly. To remove the electrical plug slide a blade screw driver down the lock tab side (aft side) and pry lock tab to release and slide plug out.

    after watching your video, I decide to take a look at my shifter since I was having the same problem. I opened it up, and found a ton of cigarette Ash all down the shifter. It was pretty much dirty. like the previous owner used it as a ash tray. The link with the moving gears were too dirty to move. So I took a Shop-Vac to all of it and clean all of the cigarette Ash and dirt out from around them moving parts. Then I used some PB Blaster to clean and lubricate the moving parts so they can the slide better. movef the shifter several times. Now it works fine. Would have never thought to look down there until I saw your video. Thanks for posting!

    I just said screw it and took the spring out from behind that override silver button and put some double sided 3M adhesive tape where the spring was but as soon as that spring came out it was fixed. I did it because the gear selector button was just a little sticky without that button being taped. I woke up with my girlfriend talking about the shifter being stuck and towing it and money and blah blah blah. Thanx to your vid I was driving my car like 2 minutes after I got in it and my gf was puzzled. It would've been a nightmare had she not woken me up and just called the tow truck, 600 or more they'd of charged for something I fixed with a screw driver and a single tiny piece of tape. Thank you for the post, and luckily my car has an independent GPS blackbox deep inside the chassis since my car goes into neutral without a key now lol alarms are usually enough.

    Thanks for watching.I believe you'r talking about the plug that goes directly to the shifter plug. The harness plug with the wires has locking arms on the sides of the harness plug. You will have to gently pry them back (spread apart) and it should detache itself with a little wiggle motion. You may have to use something small, like a small flat-headed screwdriver, wedge it between the connectors at the clips holding it. They are like locking tangs, sounds hard, just hard to see the clips.
