    Fixed it! Thank you so much. Chevy wanted to replace entire shifter for $400. I said no thank you, please give me the $15 repair kit that should be free since we all have the privilege of owning your complete piece of junk. 2012 Chevy Sonic LS By the way the new kit has the spring and small little pin included.

    Wow!! The way you showed the steps in the video helped me so much. I’m a woman and thought I would never been able to change it myself because I’m not a mechanic; I did it in less that 30 minutes. Thanks a lot!

    THANKS for doing this video! Just fixed my shift button on a 2012 Sonic today in 20 minutes for $18 bucks w/shipping. Dealership argued that I needed an entire new shift lever plus labor to install it, ridiculous! Thanks again!

    Ordered the kit from Amazon, better replacement parts than what you show. The main piece is hard black plastic instead of the brittle silver one. The button is separate and pops on. The pin was a bit difficult but finally got it. Simple and quick to put together. I'm an older lady and this was a breeze. Thank you for your video, it was very helpful! Price was $10.00 😊

      Nice! When I did this, GM was the only option. Glad to see there are other ones now.

    The dealership wanted $300 for the whole job, they said that they needed remove the whole thing. We paid $10.45 for the parts, GM 95393161.
    If it takes the service person 30 minutes to do the job, that would be a $580 per hour labor charge.
    When removing the old parts, sometimes one side would come out first and not the other side first. I thought about spraying a little WD 40 prior to replacement, but I did not when I noticed a more greasy appearance on the moving parts. So I used some dry graphite to lubricate the moving parts.
    Thanks Jay for the informative video.

      +John Bushouse Glad I could help. Probably best you used the graphite lube instead of WD-40 because of the plastics.

    This cheap plastic button was holding my keys hostage. The stealership's approach to fixing this problem (replace the entire shifter assembly + labor) is why I will never buy another Chevrolet. Thanks for this helpful video, problem solved!

    Hi there, I really appreciate it for posting this video. When it comes to be repaired in car repair shop, it is needed to be replaced with assembly. Surely the cost is above 300 USD and it's not economical. But with this video, I can fix it by myself and it could save cost. Thanks from Korea.

  • @matthoustonvideo

    Only additional tips: lay a towel around the shifter in case you drop the tiny pin trying to get it in. I dropped mine and it went INSIDE the shifter. I just reused the old one.
    Many thanks for the video! It guided me in just what to do . I ordered replacement GE part on eBay that is different part number. Only difference is the knob is two pieces instead of one. It worked.

    Thank you very much for posting this. This same problem happened to my Fiancé's car. When I called the Chevrolet garage in my area, they kept insisting that I had to replace the whole shifter assembly and it was gonna cost around $400. I finally told them to get stuffed and I'll just live with it because that's an insane price to pay to fix a damn button.
    I knew there was another (more. Pay efficient) way to fix it.

I wasn't able to find the part (at the dealership they wanted to change the entire shifter), but following your video I was able to take my broken button out, put it back together with krazy glue, and put it back in. I am having the same problem with my 2013 Sonic. The shift button started sticking about a month ago and has gotten worse. I did spray some WD-40 in it and it shifted better for a few days. I google gearshift problems, which led me to your video. I have ordered the part and think I will be able to replace it myself with the help of your video. I see that there are many complaints about the gear shifter button sticking, I don't know why GM hasn't created a RECALL to fix this ! It is a dangerous situation when the button sticks and the vehicle is not really in PARK ! Thanks for posting your video.

    Just finished doing the replacement except I used GM #42423244. This kit has a black nylon part that incorporates the hinge pin area so that the tab on the chrome button that broke off is replaced with a stronger nylon hinge area. This piece also has a cutout for the spring tab that holds the spring on the arm - a better design than the plastic chrome arm. Exact same process to install. I also used a screwdriver to push the white plastic release button down and greased the area where the white plastic piece slides up and down. Works good as new. Thank you !!

    Thanks for the post! :) My button just started to go a few days ago and at 26,000 miles and a local dealership that's already tried to fleece me, I really didn't want to have to haul it into the shop.
    Granted, I'm no stranger to doing my own repairs (car or otherwise) but this will definitely save me some time, and prevent me from nicking up the trim pieces in the process. :)

    • @JayPerkinson
      @JayPerkinson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a shame. With that many miles, it's definitely still under warranty.

    • @aimeebischoff2977
      @aimeebischoff2977 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually under my warranty terms it's 30,000 miles, or 3 years, whichever comes first. It's about five months outside of warranty in my case. The miles are only low because I've been extremely lucky to live pretty close to work.

    Great video. I just replaced this successfully in my daughter's Sonic. The new, redesigned replacement part is #42423234 ($13 delivered). GM changed it from the one-piece chrome unit (that broke) to a two-piece unit (plastic lever with chrome button cover). All the rest of the pieces are the same. This detailed video really helped me to get through the process easily. Took about 20 minutes. Thanks Jay Perkinson!

    Amateur tip: The graphite trim piece that fits over the top is easier to take off if you take off the back before the top. Also, GM has revised the design, the new part number is 42423234; I can attest to it fitting the 2012 Sonic, YMMV for later models. The process with the new kit is the same, it just separates the button from the lever and makes the lever from nylon to reduce friction - it makes immediate sense when you see it.

  • @josephburke7713
    @josephburke7713 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This video is extremely helpful and I went out to the local Chevy dealer to buy the knob kit. It cost me $13.79. Part of the problem I believe is that all the parts (both the old and new knob kit are made of plastic except for the roll pin). The last piece that he put on was the most difficult for me. It was almost like they made it wrong and the little plastic ears didn't want to match up with the slots. I got it on but one of the ears broke off and it looks like there won't be an issue with it coming off. The button kit I bought has a different part number (42423234) however, I have a 2014 Sonic, not a 2012 as shown in the video. I believe that the re-design for the knob kit will solve the sticking issue that I had.

Should I retake everything off and re install it with the spring?

    Just finished this repair, and I must be the only person in the world who struggled with it. By the time i attempted this repair the metal U shaped spring was so mangled it was not in the correct spot, so I did not understand where the replacement spring went. I still am not really sure how the rubber stopper fit in. I thought I did, but when I went to start the car the button pushes and I can change can gears, but I could not remove the key from the ignition. They only thing that worked was removing the rubber stopper completely. I am really hoping I do not have more trouble down the road.

    This guy put in the same part that broke though, so he will be experiencing the same problem in the future. The same company makes a replacement part that's been modified to keep the button from breaking in the first place. The new design the button attaches to the internal shift button lever which they replaced with tougher plastic, also the wimpy spring that this model uses is no longer needed because the shift spring replaced it, so it doesn't stick because it getting jammed. The chrome button attaches to a black plastic lever. So it pivots at a different angle.

The dealer I went to told me it would cost $150 just to buy the rest of the shifter assembly to get the part, or to go to a "Pick Your Part" place. I'm hoping there is another way.

      D Huston If it's the same spring that's in the kit then I would suggest spending the $15.

      Yours came with a spring for sure? Others in here are saying theirs didn’t

    I think I can fit this problem with a little grease? the same problem, don't know what the new button will do, and to be honest, in the video, it looks like it sticks a little....sir please tell everyone you fix worked, be honest. it's a friction problem not a button problem right, be honest, my button is fine but yeah it doesn't work right, a dab of grease right? please tell. your video showed a new button doing the same as the old button, a little grease right? please...okay I'm going to make a rebuttal video including a dab of grease on the part that springs upwards...seems to be the problem to me.

      RUFilming the button was broken in half. I'm not sure grease would fix that. Yes, it still works.

      Sorry, it didn't look broken when you pulled it out of stick shift. Your video was helpful and thank you for posting it.
      my stick shift just got a little sticky so I lubed it and it works. Sorry for being a such a dick with my comment on your video, you deserved respect like everyone else who shares videos. I'm truly sorry for my words and poor attitude. Have a great day.

      Yeah, that's ridiculous being that the dealer is the one that sells that part.

    Hi Jay,
    Thanks for this very clear and detailed video. I currently have this problem on my 2013 Sonic. But I am also looking to replace the whole knob because the rubber your finger is on at 0:05 (just above the button) had worn out almost as if it decomposed already. Is this something I can DIY like in this video?

    I get what your trying to do. You really are not helping the problem. As you know i have been fighting tooth and nail with GM for them to recall this problem. I dont want any joe schmow working on a SAFETY MECHANISM for my brand new car. I would love to talk to you in detail about this. You can reach me on my youtube etc, etc. I think it would be best if you removed the video. I know this seems stupid. I do not want people thinking that this is okay to do to your vehicle. The car is unsafe, the MAIN safety mechanism is failing in everyone's vehicle. I do not understand why people are not understanding this. Hope to talk to you in the future.
    -Justin
    Yes i do see the people you are helping out, they deserve the right fix. FROM GM. This should be covered, with or without warranty. This will kill people, i have told GM and they have done nothing.

      +Jay “Prop Dad” Perkinson I actually started noticing the problem earlier that year. I just hope people are getting the repairs they deserve. This is not okay. I have been fighting this for years....

      +Justin Zimmerman (JZIM69) Really? Yes this might be an issue. A recall issue? I doubt it. In case you forgot. That other lever right behind the shifter is the Parking brake.Your secondary safety mechanism. It can be used to secure the car while parked also. You make it sound like the world is ending. This person and the video he took the time to make and post has helped many people. Me included. To suggest he take it down is dumb.

      2 things though Bill Harmon. You cannot remove your key, car can get stolen AND the car can be thrown into reverse while driving.

      Your right about both of those items. I used this video to fix my sonic today. He just makes it sound like the world is ending.
