Seeing people unprepared for Mark to bless them with a heavenly solo is always so amazing and then it begins!
There is a more recent video of Mark Knophler (born in '49) explaining the nuance of this sound. Mark playing unique sounds on his new Stratocaster picking with the soft part of his fingers to make such a mellow sound was fascinating. Video from '78 or '79 of him playing this is a MUST SEE! Signature moment is at the end, and audiences always cheer when he does that.

You should listen to the live version of this song. Specifically the Alchemy Live version. They recorded a live concert/album in 1983 called Alchemy. One of the best live concerts ever. Mark Knophler makes magic with his guitar. The drummer kills it! I encourage you to listen to it. You won't regret it.

Mark Knopfler was one of the greatest guitar players of his era. He was always underrated by the general public, but musicians and audiophiles saw his greatness.
Amen my man. I have been saying for years his name never gets mentioned anywhere near what it should when people talk about the greatest rock guitarists. Never gets near the credit he deserves.

He is the most genius musician ever. However, don't take anything away from the other members. Like a sports team, selfless members who don't need recognition bring the team together. Knopfler gets a goal here, but the rest of the band gets an assist
He’s not just a guitarist guys. He wrote it, he sung it and he played guitar and he’s been doing it ever since. Mark Knopfler is a real hero.

Sultans of Swing is so lean and clean. It’s so catchy and addicting that it will make anyone become an air-drummer and air-guitarist in the first listen, and bob their heads to the rhythm.
This whole video, I was like “wait till you hear the solos and drums. Sure enough, they became instant air-drummers/guitarist and head-bobbers. 😂

@@jmarth523 I came from blues to shred. And I must say, Mark Knoffler was way more skill full than guys like Eric Clapton(even tho Eric is one of my feviourite guitarist). Main reason for me liking Mark was because of his use of arpegios and of course because of his unique picking style.

Saw Mark Knopfler live in Atlantic City and I actually cried. True virtuoso. I’ve seen Clapton, Sanatana, Gilmour….Knopfler is that good.

I'm a girl that grew up in the hood in Brooklyn NY..R&b..rap..& Jazz is what everyone in my circle listened too... MAN! when I heard this song as a young pre-teen I fell in luv with this joint... the beat & the guitar riffs are soo smooth!!!🥰👍

What gets lost is how great the drumming is on this. People usually only credit drummers for over the top fills, but his cymbal work is subtly brilliant.
The hit on the snare at the start sort of sets the atmosphere of the song. Very subtle and effective.
It always sounded like he had 14 cymbals, probably the best mixed drums on a song ever

Amen. That fill at the end of the intro (2:42) is one of my favourite fills of all time, Pick Withers is an incredibly tasteful drummer.
Most non drummers will see this song as nothing special but holy shit he turned something as simple as stick control into something brilliant.

Whenever i listen to this and when it comes on, I LISTEN to it, I always just feel like it's one of the most perfect songs ever.
I remember hearing this for the first time on a Sunday night from upstairs while my Dad was ironing his shirts for the week and coming downstairs to ask what it was. I was 7-8 years old and 20 years later I still love it as much as I did then.

In 1978 a was a student in the university town of Lund in Sweden. I used to stay up late and study. Swedish radio had a DJ with a weekly radio show where he presented new and sometimes really weird music. I loved that music program and tuned in every week. That’s where I heard Sultans of Swing the first time. It blew my mind. Really knocked the socks off me. The next day, I went to the local record store (remember those?) and told them I wanted a record by ”Dire Straits”. The record store dude just looked at me: ”never heard that name before”. I was really disappointed until after about five seconds, record store dude #2 called out from the record store back room: ”I think they sent us something with that name in this morning’s delivery, just wait a second.” So, I got my Dire Straits record and spent the rest of day getting my quantum physics inspiration from Sultans of Swing. To this day I am pretty proud being the first person in the city of Lund to have owned a Dire Straits record.

When this came out, it sounded like nothing else. His clear, clean guitar tone and his impeccable riffing hit the music industry like a ton of bricks. Mark Knopfler is unique to this day.
Right? This had me scratching my head riding to grade school back in '77, but getting it none the less.
As a young man of nineteen years old who was playing guitar for about 7 years and self-taught it was 1980 n I heard this on the radio I was at the intersection of 103rd and Cicero Avenue in Oak Lawn Illinois just on the southwest side near Chicago as it was coming over the speakers I couldn't believe what I heard and he had me from then on one of the greatest writers and players in my opinion. He got together with my other favorite guitar player Chet Atkins and made an album called neck-and-neck which is crazy
Oh no man, not unique at all. It was just new to RnR, this structure, form, and sound comes right out of cool jazz and fusion. It was just new to rock. Miles, Sanborn, Klugh, Al DiMeola, Weather Report, who obviously heavily influenced Mark.

First time I heard this song, it immediately reminded me of JJ Cale. Knopfler himself cites Cale as an influence. Mark definitely has his own sound, but I can hear that JJ peeking out once in a while!

@Louis Sanderson It's more important because without good rhythm the lead has no base (not bass but foundation) on which to build. People can't tap their feet or hands to a lead. I saw something that's pretty obvious but rarely thought about (or rarely mentioned) that said that the vast majority of people tap along with the bass line, which is the root of the rhythm, along with the drums.
Mark’ constant freestyle jazzy/bluesy lead guitar licks in this song are like a drug. You grow to crave the next fix, you just start to wonder while listening, what’s he going to do next?’ He is genius!

I may not be able to name old school hip hop classics. Everyone is raised on different music. I'm just glad people are discovering these songs to begin with.
The reason his playing is so smooth is 1) he's playing fingerstyle (just like the guitarist for Fleetwood Mac, Lindsay Buckingham), and 2) he's one of the best fingerstyle rock guitarists ever - his playing is like butter. I'd add that this is one of my all-time favorite songs. I can listen to it over and over again. And yes, he is mainly improvising (aka freesyling). Every time I've heard them play this song, it's different.
I absolutely love when smooth guitar players like this just freestyle. It takes so much more to sit there and come up with a hundred different versions of a song that still sound good with the rest of the music

My friend, a guitarist in a band, while sitting in a pub back in 79, stopped the conversation when this was on the juke box. He stood up and walked over to the box trying to listen over the ambient noise. He was shaking his head in awe. I don't remember exactly but he said he might as well give up playing guitar with players like this to contend with. I dind't get it until much later.

He and Chet Atkins play alot together and him and Chet and Jerry Reed are very close friends that's finger picking Royalty
I saw both of them on a 25th anniversary tour of Clapton's. They are both virtuoso guitarists but very different and it was incredibly enjoyable.
Actually I saw an interview back in the 90s with Eric Clapton and he said SRV was his all time best.
Clapton also said Prince was the greatest guitarist.

If you knew the general "pop" music that was top 40 in 1979, when this song became a hit in the U.S., it cut through the noise like a knife with it's clean, crisp, sparse yet perfectly delivered guitar sound. Only album I have had in album, cassette, and cd.

Glad you guys featured this song and enjoyed it so much. As others have pointed out, that guitar sound is virtually all Mark Knopfler who wrote the song, plays lead guitar and is the vocalist. His brother David played rhythm guitar on this. That incredible guitar riffing and soloing is Mark Knopfler, who is considered one of the greatest guitarists in rock music history. You're right, too, that you can hear blues, jazz and other influences in this. He later incorporated country influences into many of his songs as well, playing with Chet Atkins on their superb "Neck and Neck" album together.

I don’t remember that part, but I read the Hitchhiker series in middle school so it’s been a min. I really should re-read that series bc I remember really loving it.
Tunnel of Love might be my favorite Dire Straits and that says a lot when you think about how many great songs they had.

This is my favorite classic rock song. And it wasn't back then. It's only from developing an appreciation for the musicality of those classic rock artists over the years that I have come to love this song. It's comfortable and makes me feel good.
I’m 50yo and I’ve always felt this song was a duet between the vocals and guitar. Maybe it’s been obvious to some, or most.
All hail Mark Knopfler and his finger-picking majesty.
I know. There's also part of me that feels like it was composed with the lead guitar taking the spot usually reserved for vocals (with the riffs and really bright spots) while the vocals were treated a lot more like "just part of the band." It's odd, but it works beautifully with Mark Knopfler's understated vocal delivery. There's also a call-and-response/echo thing with the guitars that is surprisingly conversational, but it's just a perfect composition IMO. I like the vibe and lyrics of "Romeo and Juliet" slightly better, but I'm thrilled whenever "Sultans of Swing" pops up on the radio or a playlist.

Think of it this way: The singing is the rhythm, Mark's guitar is the lead singer. Now you understand why no one remembers the lyrics but everyone remembers the solos.

"The Guitarist" you're talking about in the band basically *IS* the band. Mark Knopfler (also the singer). Widely considered to be one of the top guitarists of all time. Absolutely amazing talent. Had a solo career after Dire Straits, put out an incredible duo album with Chet Atkins that was just amazing.
interestingly enough, Sultans was (is?) Knopfler's first composition. And yes, his solo career despite being nothing like dire straits was very compelling. What it is and Prairie Wedding being a couple of my favs.

It’s all Mark, guys. David is just keeping rhythm. Mark writes ALL their songs, sings ALL their songs, and is a guitar magician. Now, in his 70s, he’s still making killer albums.

He is 1 of 2 guitar players who I’ve heard be taken out of a song, and the song dies. The other is John Fogerty. My opinion, but I think it stands up. I haven’t heard a song Carlos was taken out of, or he would likely be on the list for me
Sometimes it makes me frustrated that people aren't listening to more of his later stuff. They all just wanna hear the hits from the 80s. Musical genius who never stops writing. People should listen to all his stuff!

I always thought of this song as a duet between Mark and his guitar. Mark is the lead in terms of the time he’s at the mike, but only the guitar does any singing.

This song is a great example of what we call a "call and response". The vocals sing a line, then the guitar plays a lick. The vocals give the call, the guitar gives the response.

Dude, I love the fact that these guys aren't just completely clueless about general information on the music and actually seem interested in getting a background before listening to it. It makes the reaction more interesting and when they pause the song, they have comments to make rather than not knowing what to say like a lot of reaction channels.
I find it unbelievable to be honest. These guys must be acting, you've had to have grown up in a bubble on the moon not to know this song. In saying that, explains a lot about the complete dearth of musical ability ...
Ryan & George know different genres and influences on later music. Other "Reaction" channels are regular people who've never heard the songs. Plus these guys are mid-20s to mid-30s yo so probably wouldn't have known a R&R song that was 43 yo.

This song is amazing and it brings it more to life when you know that the song isn’t directed to themselves, mark knopfler was making this song about a small band from his hometown who played in a restaurant weekly in front of a tiny audience. The irony is when the small band constantly proclaimed themselves as “THE SULTANS OF SWING” even though they had no following.
He's literally talking to the guitar and she responds. So beautiful. One of the best songs of all time for sure!

I've listened to Dire Straits for 40 years and I've never even noticed that super cool drum riff!
This was the first channel that I EVER watched a "reaction" video, I wasn't even aware of them before. I was going through Guitar Player or some other magazine and there was a small article about "Holy Wars" being covered. It was great, and I've watched many other channels doing it, but this one is the best one. The production is better than most, but it's the analysis that separates it.
They say they're not musicians, but they certainly seem to know enough about music theory and the workings of it.
I noticed that from the jump with the Megadeth. It was the quick and effortless time signature and key changes they focused on. Usually for people who don't play it's something like "they play so fast."
BTW, for a lot of guitarists, Sultans of Swing is on the top of the list of "perfect guitar solos." Usually up there with Comfortably Numb.
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest and most technically sound guitar players ever. He’s a beast.
As a first single, Sultans of Swing is a pretty strong "hello world!"

Pretty sure you haven't heard a bunch of the stuff they listen or listened to (just like me). It just depends on what you grew up listening to. I used to listen to a classic rock radio station the whole time in high school and that is why I know Dire Straits even though I'm more of a metal guy.

You are all idiots for not understanding that they've faking it. Of course they've heard these songs before. They have a whole channel of "reactions" of hearing songs for the first time
"Sultans of Swing" is the anthem of anyone who has ever played in a cover band. You start out with these grand ideas that you're the greatest band in the world, giving your band an absurd name like "the sultans of swing" when in reality you're just a bunch of low-rent humps playing music in your spare time while working a 9-to-5 job (he's got a daytime job, he's doing alright), but your band has some great talent in it like guitar George (he knows all the chords) and Harry who can barely afford a guitar (when he gets up under the lights to play his thing) but the group is greater than the sum of its parts. The kids who come to see your show don't know what they're missing (in their best brown baggies and their platform soles) and they don't give a damn about your (trumpet playing) band, but the sultans play creole... the music of the people. And at the end of the song when the band lets loose with those tasty arpeggios... You know you've got something no-one else has. Maybe nobody outside of your little town will hear you play, but for a few minutes of your shitty little gig playing for beer money... you ARE the sultans of swing.

I’m 25, and when I was a newborn apparently the only way to get me to actually go to sleep was this song, so my dad recorded the song on loop on both sides of a cassette and got a cassette player that you didn’t need to flip manually just so that he and my mom could have some peace. Needless to say this song is imbedded in my DNA.

great reaction video guys! being a drummer since birth, I truly believe that the way the drummer plays on this song makes the words/lyrics pop out and also brings a really cool and constant energy to the way the song feels...listen to the way the drummer switches back and forth from hi-hat to ride cymbal and back again...I don't think any other drum style would fit this song as well....kudos to the drummer! (the other instruments and vocals definitely do their thing in bringing the song to life)..love how well this song was put together...

I am a lady. I was a young girl when I first heard this song. I fell in love with Dire Straits immediately. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitar players of all time. A great musician and lyricist. An epic real rock and roll band from Britain, and heavily flavored with blues!
