Today Mark Auctioned off 100 of his guitars in his collection to raise over $11million for charities. What a great thing to do for others.
And considering he's worth around $100 million he doesn't live the Beverley Hills lifstyle and hell would have to freeze over before you'd find him in Monaco. ;)
I love Knopfler music... but we should check the figures: 110.000€ per guitar? 🤔
@josevi5835 the numbers are public. Go ahead and look for yourself.
@josevi5835 some of the guitars went for half a million , if you want you can see a lot of the auction on TH-cam and you can check the figures yourself , plenty went for more than 110k
@@andrewtims9524 Ok thanks! Incredible amount of money for a guitar 🙂
When Mark has a guitar in his arms, it's like it becomes part of his body.
It absolutely is just that!
One of the finest live performances ever.
I agree with you
Actually was tho classic for sure
I saw the same Concert in Australia in 1985, best concert ever.
I've heard this song probably at least a thousand times (I'm old) and I swear I still get chills during that solo near the end. And also? The DRUMS!!!
This was my Dad's favourite song and so, mine as well. Mark just released a new album, which sounds great. I must buy it too
The drummers dad was in the audience and Mark told him to let it rip which he dulybdud
I’m 74 same age as Mark, I’ve seen them live twice back in the day. This is my favourite recording of all time and will be playing at my funeral.
Yes, I was so sad to hear they parted with this incredible drummer.
@simonsimpson5052 that is a super cool piece of trivia.
The drummer had them all on his magic carpet ride. Wow.
I believe his Dad watched him live for the first time at this show and he got caught up in the emotion, racing a little. Still awesome.
@@Lemonscreech539unfortunately it's an urban myth , he may have been at that concert but it was far from the first time they had seen him play live , he was a hugely respected drummer who had toured extensively and his proud parents had supported him massively during his career, he still lives near them in South Wales where he has lived his whole life
@@andrewtims9524 I don't give a sh*t. Terry Williams was amazing!!!
@@bsvenss2 where did I say he wasn't?
Yeah, that was my first thought as well. Great performance by the drummer.
Now THAT'S A REAL MUSICIAN! And I'm talking about mr. Ruiz! He never pauses the song, even if it's more than 10 exausting minutes! He respects the artist and himself and he doesn't ruin his "first time" experience. He can throw some comments on the fly, and patiently follows the rythm and music and gives his comments and critisism AFTER the performance! I salute you sir!
Mad props
I hate it when people stop & start the video and just talk & talk just listen to the full video and then you can disect the song..
In my uneducated opinion, this was the greatest live performance ever! The entire double album is amazing!!
I've said it many times - these are some of the best 10 minutes on TH-cam. An amazingly tight and talented band (Terry Williams KILLS it on drums), Led by one of the most talented guitarists in history. Knopfler is totally unique.
Look at the way the band are smiling at each other as though they can,t believe how on fire and in the zone they are everything fell in place for this performance and they knew they were going to give the crowd something special. Just pure musical perfection
actually... they were looking at each other because the drummer went 'nuts.' His family were in the audience and he decided to show them how good he was by speeding up the song. Everyone else followed along...
@@Triton_Secure He played the same way in just about every available show from that era.
My first time thoughts exactly on seeing this for the first time!
TELEGRAPH ROAD WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!
Where to start, I did lights for the sultans tour when David was in the band & everyone had small cardboard red & white fender badges with Dire Straits written over the top. Lovely people, pleasant to all.
The song was written about a gig in a near empty pub by a band called Sultans of Swing, the band name amused him with the contrast between the name & their style.
The night of this recording was the drummers birthday & his family were guests for the show.
Mark is a really nice person, if you can find his chat with Brian Johnson of ACDC it is quite illuminating as both are of a similar age & grew up in the same area of UK.
Wow! Just wow.
Adds to it to hear they were also nice people...not let fame change them...
What I love about this performance is how much all of them are into it... couldn't have happened without any one of them... the drums are so good... It's just a classic and masterpiece... Always will be...
That audience participating... Wow.. you'd never forget it if you were there..
An amazing performance by all members of the band!
I saw DS on this tour as a 19 year old kid. We came out of the show drenched with sweat and worn out. The term “In the pocket” should be linked to this video. Pure genius and brilliant energy. 🫡
During the verse where Mark is singing about the rhythm guitarist the rhythm guitarist, Hal Lindes, takes over lead guitar. It's a neat touch.
Haven't found a better live. Pure enjoyment from start to finnish. The Band, the audience. And, one if the greatest songs of all time. Knopfler has his own style. Insane drummer.
As someone who remembers this amazing band back when, it is great to see their astonishing work appreciated by newcomers to their music. This must be one of the greatest live performances ever, the joy in playing for their audience, not just themselves, so evident. Thank you for the memories! ☘️💚☘️
The band was on fire. Terry Williams on drums was awesome on this track.
This combination of smooth clean guitar stylings and pure raw energy is hard to find.
Mark picks his guitar with a thumb and two fingers. He's amazing and still goin' strong.
The best tone every, the slow build up still gives me shivers 30 years later from when I first heard it.
the guitar is amazing, but the drummer is absolute crazy,unbelievable...👍👍👍
Terry Williams the drummer. The was the first time his Dad came to see him drum for Dire Straits. He was perfection.
Mark Knopfler is left handed, and he's playing that guitar with his right hand. And he's finger picking. Chet Atkins had a great deal of respect for Knopfler.
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists ever.
The drummer is amazing!
Now watch it again and notice how little Mark actually looks at his guitar while playing. He's amazing.
The drummer is the hero of this version of the song. I prefer the singing and guitar on the studio version but what a ride to hear the fun they are having.
That whole Alchemy concert is fire. 🔥 🔥 Thanks for the reaction. Subscribed. 😊
One of the greatest live performances you will ever see my friend! ❤️🇦🇺
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making your living like that wouldn't suck.
Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.
It can't be easy being the next band on stage after this epic performance
There wasn't one, thankfully. You can't top that.
My favorite guitarist
Yessssss, mine too🔥🎸🔥
I think everything has been said about Mark that can been said. He is amazing. Also have to mention that the drummer was working his butt off too.
The drummer must have lost a few pounds weight in that concert!
Love when people unabashedly enjoy a musical performance!
You begin feeling joyful watching their joy. Band and reviewer. Awe and respect!
the older he has gotten, and perhaps as old as I have become, to me , his later stuff was even better, although sometimes a bit melancholy, he continues to amaze me,,,I love our reactions! Keep on!
Drummer Terry Williams is of fire!
His dad was in the audience and Mark told Terry to go for it and make dad proud.
A great song in a great live performance. And it was great to watch your reaction and hear your comments. Cheers!
Pure genius guitar solos!!!
Probably the best live performance I have ever watched !!
Knopfler top 5 of all time guitarist!
Mark is left-handed but plays right-handed guitar. 🎸🎸🎸
Same as Hendrix then
Knopfler is a lefty too, amazing guitarist
his finger play which is rarely seen amongst rock players was singled out by gibson les paul , as his playing was the same .
Do you mean Gibson or Les Paul. They're not the same entity. I've tried to find a reference to what you're talking about but find nothing.
les paul . sorry. and his wife
@@KenFullman
gibson was the guitar maker .les paul design was used
@@KenFullman
I remember the first time I heard this,I was playing guitar in a showband in Ireland, the D.j. played this before we went on stage, the piano player tapped me (1979) wait till your hear this guy.I now teach this to teenagers who all love Mark Knopfler, the greatest!!
One the best bands of my generation, but you needed to see them live, so much better than the records, saw them twice will never forget 2-3 hours of pure liquid energy
Its fucking Dire Straits, and best living guitarist 😂
There were actually two keyboard players. You can really start hearing their separate parts during the part of the performance where it slows down the the one guy has a bit of a solo. Then towards the end when the camera pulls back you can see them on either side of the drummer. This is one of my all time favorite songs.
Lyrically Mark, beautiful outstanding musicians all jamming together with the lead guitar as the centrepiece. Mark is one of the best ever for me, the best I have seen live. And this was 41 years ago. Makes me feel old but it takes me right back to my youth, the 70's & 80's seeing them live. So, excited buying the first album & playing it over & over. There is nothing like music it should be a religion & forget all the others because with music there is love, peace & harmony. This was a religious experience with musicians all communication with one another. The drums with the lead guitar then Mark communicating with the keyboard player when the tempo became slower. Brilliant, superb, sublime.
One of the best songs ever!
Everyone points out the drummer, Terry Williams, had his dad there. True, but his fifth grade teacher was also there, and Terry said he did this performance for her.
Mark kind of defies categorization but when I want to relax, I listen to either Dire Straits or one of his solo records.
There is something special about Knopfler. When I watch him play, it's just natural. There is no translation of ideas to sounds. When I listen to this music I remember the times when I had a bike and spend all weekends on day long tours listening to it. When I was a kid, I didn't know that you have to learn playing an instrument, not really. After all, music is just there, on the radio, in the stereo. I had no idea that in a band these guys have to play together, listen to each other. They're just having fun there, aren't they? After trying to learn the guitar and finding that I have no talent for music, I started to appreciate how hard that actually is. But when I see Knopfler play, I am reminded on what I thought making music is like. It's a state, Knopfler is there and that means there is also music. He's not making an effort, look at him. That can't be hard. It's fun, look.Didldidldidl-ditdy! I just love it...
You have such joy when you listen to it. I love your energy and that wicked sparkle in your eyes.
If I'm not mistaken, the red guitar being played by Mark Knopfler in this video actually sold for over $500,000 at auction last week. The whole collection fetched over $11 million, 25% of which was donated to charity.
Killer drummer!!!
My favourite because this was the one the studio version I heard in a car bought the album and everything there after loved Mark and Dire Straits ever since Another great guitarist who says he owes it all to Hank and his red and white fender who got it from Cliff
The drummer is amazing. I remember his name.
Terry Willams
Working 3rd shift during the pandemic, I made it a nightly ritual to have my coffee while listening to one of a dozen violin concertos. A nice 25 - 35 mins to prepare to start the day. To the video... He's one of my favorite guitarists, partially because I have a warm place in my heart for fingerstyle electric players (often being one myself). Another really great example is Lindsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac.
Oh yeah, Lindsey is amazing
The best Dire Straits song is Telegraph Road by Alchemy live, it is simply a masterpiece, one of the best songs in history
Absolutely
Close second Brothers in Arms… ?
@@Lemonscreech539 I've only seen it once, but Mark did a live version in Israel that played on UK TV long ago (using an LP sunburst), and I'd have to say it was the best version of BIA I've ever heard. Sadly, I've not seen that version since.
I agree.
I agree
3:00 The moment when the film director realises that the drummer is on fire. "Keep a camera on him!".
@JoneRuiz I like the way you do this. Many 'Reaction' videos stop and start the song and then the youtuber comments. The way you do it here is much better. I work at night. 99 out of 100 nights nothing happens, and I just spend the night listening to videos like this. I much prefer this format to youtubers stopping the song. You give your spontaneous reactions along the music, and a reaction at the end. I like that.
You got it! They look so happy to be there, and mark put out an album last year... at 72 yrs old~❤
Mark Knopfler is the British Paco De Lucia in his own genre.
The joy of Dire Straits
I live his playing dynamics.
If you want to see Mark play a bit of classical guitar try Private Investigations
Don't get me wrong, he was good back then. That was was about 40 years ago. He's now a master guitarist. From the music from Princess Bride, to If This is Goodbye (a lovesong from the point of view of the passengers on the 9/11 Jets). He is a true master.
This is the latter. It's the stipped back, solo vocal, non-country version. I genuinely cry from the beauty of it.
th-cam.com/video/rH6ZW7OLhkE/w-d-xo.html
Great playing❤👌 great reaction ❤👌
I missed them the first time around. Glad I caught them this time!
Mark has one of the most recognizable guitar tones out there. Yes, he doesn’t use pick. I notice that in this particular video he uses a technique called “Chicken picking “ to get that chucking sound on his guitar that you often hear from chicken.😊😊😊
The thing a lot of people don't know about Mark Knopfler is that he's actualy left handed
A lot of people don't know what a lot of people don't know 😘
@@MetteC5...😂😮
@@lindacrowe8428 yes, I'm tired of numbskulls that believe 'a lot of people' are even more ignorant than they are.
Mark makes his guitar talk, seems all so relaxed and easy but must have taken years of practicing. I can imagine Les Paul and Chet Atkins may have influenced him.
You're right about Chet Atkins. You don't have to search far on youtube to find them playing together and the respect they had for each other is clear to see.
And you're right about the years of practicing. The great blues/rock guitarists of that generation - e.g. Eric Clapton; Jeff Beck; Jimmy Page, and Mark of course - each spent hours, days, months, years (as teenagers) practicing. Bear in mind there was no Internet (so, no TH-cam etc), and only basic terrestrial TV with virtually no music videos. You listened to records - often expensively imported from the USA - over and over and over again; trying to play what you were hearing.
Some of the money from Christie’s auction, selling Marks guitars, went to supporting teen cancer patients. You can TH-cam some of that. Some of the guitars went for 400,000 & 450,000 pounds. 🎉
Made me feel Happy to see You so Happy to this Amazing live performance of Sultans. 😂🔥
Over 45 years ago and still producing top of thr line guitar work.
Check out "Telegraph Road" from the same concert.
For something very different from Mark and DS try " going home , local hero " or even more different " brothers in arms "
Agree, and also his score for the movie "Cal", which isn't especially guitar oriented but is beautiful.
Such an amazing vibe
I think the outro is all about joy. My friend once said it’s like walking through the gates of heaven. I wish I thought of that description. It’s interesting to me you said “celebration”. It’s very close to joy…
Sheer perfection!
I knew you were going to love this performance. 😄
Thank you sir !
A kind of a celebration song. I like that. Good reaction.
Unbelievable 🤩🤩
Mark Knopfler does some amazing shit that other rock guitarists don't because he's doing fingerstyle. I vote you buy a strat and a giant amplifier lol
Not really most of pro and amateur players can play finger style
Well yeah, everybody *can do it, I can too, but how many can do it with a touch like his and in compound rhythms?@@mikereed8181
@@mikereed8181 Name ten
@@mikereed8181 Not exactly like this though
Why is there another way doing it well if you chopped the top of your fingers off i guess you could call it the fingerless style
Freakin greatness ❤️
He must have been at those crossroads to play like that.
Fantastic musicians!
The thing about Mark Knopler's guitar work is that the timing is split second perfect. Thats the difference between good players and exceptional players.
Mark is a badass amazing talent.
Mark has the most personality in his playing
The Sultanas of Swing: The raisin who so many people first picked up a guitar. Really grape playing.
To do that live is simply out of this world....
Great drumming
Best version of this great song live played.
There is a whole alchemy live video. There many songs there showing the whole range of the greatest band live
At last someone who lets great artists play without interrupting with inane comments…I had to subscribe to your channel . Mark Knopfler one of the greatest guitarists ever….genius
I like Rush too, listened to them for years as a kid, but nothing compares to this masterpiece.
Mark is my 3. Favorit guitarist just behind Joachin Rodriguez and David Gilmore
