Good interview. Dan's music was a big part of my life. I spent hours upon hours listening to Home Free, Souvenirs, Captured Angel, Phoenix, Netherlands, Greatest Hits, Twin Sons from Different Mothers, Innocent Age, Windows Walls & High Country Snows. I got to see him live in June, 1985 in Indianapolis. Few people who are so versatile have such depth of ability in those different skills that are displayed when they perform. His ability to crank out so many songs AND keep those guitar chops and piano skills so polished along with the vocal brilliance is impressive. I've been playing, performing, writing for, and teaching guitar in colleges for 38 years, and I've NEVER known of another pop artist who could hang with an Eric Clapton or Robert Cray on the blues AND with a Charlie Byrd on the nylon string AND a James Taylor (fingerpicking)or a Dan Crary (flat-picking) on the flat top.
    AMAZING musician.
I learned pretty much every note of the nylon parts on Home Free (Wysteria), Netherlands (Give Me Some Time), and Twin Sons...((Guitar Etude no. 3). I almost bought that Ramirez 1A that he used on those tracks when George Gruhn had it for sale.
    R.I.P. Dan.
His plea for guys to keep on top of prostate exams is to be heeded!

      You want his own answer:
"The life I lead is not the kind
That gives a woman piece of mind"
      -from "Believe in Me"
The time required to mentally conceive, keep up instrumental & vocal chops, work out and render songs, record, read contracts, travel, etc. must have left very little time for depth in a relationship when he was so busy in his 20s & early 30s.
As a musician myself, I have been married for 30 years, but only because a. My wife and I both teach music in the same city, and b. we both understand the amount of work required relative to the pay.
It's one thing to work 70 hrs a week for $150,000 salary, but quite another for the paltry $ that most musicians get unless they're contracted with Pepsi , some automobile company, or Disney.

I was a bossy, kind of lonesome, stubborn, creative kid bounced from parents who had a bit of good musical taste, and I was allowed to choose my own music as an adolescent. I gravitated toward totally disparate artists-the common denominator was artists/bands who wrote their own songs. Dan was one of those in my exclusive “selection.” I liked reflective, dramatically poetic artists who could get ghostly and “dark”: Dan, Supertramp, Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, Jessi Colter-artists who mostly wrote their own material.
Dan was my favorite. What a thrill when, first year in uni, working two jobs, a couple of fine girls I met said, “Hey, we’ve got an extra ticket to see Dan Fogelberg at Jones Beach [Long Island]. Wanna come?”
    Hell YES!
So unexpected! I didn’t even tell them how much I had clung to Dan Fogelberg as we took the train to the concert at Jones Beach. (The girls were just a little bit older than me-different story)
Anyhow, it was the greatest concert I ever attended, an amphitheater-like setting, at the time, and Dan blew the lid off the entire region with his excellence. Every one of his classics was played, as well as deep cuts from old albums. He finished with “Gambler” and the whole amphitheater was on its feet but swooning at the same time. Best sound, best performance.
I have been to many other concerts in subsequent years-but only a concert by Sinead O’Connor at the ... Fillmore (?) damn, the grubby place on Market, just above the Tenderloin, has ever come *slightly* close. I saw Dan in 1985 and her in 1997, so there were a lot of shows and experiences in between. Most artists SUCK in concert.
Dan was pure, absolute magic and perfection. I still remember every song. Bravos and ovations for Mr Fogelberg, who had already been a favorite for years before in my life thus ... far, far away from NYC and Long Island. I lucked-out with this concert invite, as if by Providence
What made it even more magical? The girls I was with (we were maybe just a *little* high, and I mean just a *small* amount) missed the train back into the city because Dan extended his show with encores, and it was summer, busy, so we figured we’d catch the next, inopportune train, and as we left Jones Beach the sky burst with a hard but warm summer DOWNPOUR and thunder! 😂 We were laughing, desperate, and totally trapped, as well a tad high, as mentioned.
But two fellow concert-goers saw us in our distress and offered us a ride back into the city in their yellow VW Bug. The three of us fit into the back seat. Five people in a Bug! Three of them drenched and goofy. We didn’t know each other but we all sang Dan Fogelberg songs the entire way, until they dropped us off in Manhattan, with best wishes, no questions asked.
One of the best days of my life.
What has happened to this nation?

Your welcome! Yes I love that song too. And I do know his music very well, after he passed away his was the ONLY music I would listen to and that lasted 4 years. In the car, at home when I wasn't watching TV and that wasn't a lot, Dan's music was constantly on. I still listen to his beautiful voice just not as much as before. I have all of his CD's so there was a lot of music to listen too. Still can't believe he is gone. I am just so thankful to have had his music in my life.

I am wondering what the name of the song was when they came back from break. 4:22-4:25. I am struggling to go through his music to find out what slow song that was. He was singing something along this lines of "...For a candle lit." Then the song ended. I hope I find out what it is , but in the meantime , does anyone know & can help me by hearing that song for me & if they know his music well enough to tell me which one it was. Thanks.

The "wonderful lady" who he was talking about in this interview...well, let's just say it all ended wretchedly. But he was able to find a good lady before he passed on. He had often said that many of his best love songs were written about other people than himself. He seems like a good guy, but many of the great romantic poets were assholes in real life. Not saying that Dan was one of them, but perhaps his music took priority over other things. Nonetheless, I have always been a huge fan but I'm glad I never met him. Never meet your heroes, you'll only find out that they're human.
