One of the purest tenor voices I’ve ever heard. Couple that with thought-provoking music and you have a very rare combination. Sadly, he never got the level of recognition he deserved in his lifetime and his passing was largely unnoticed in the music world. At least TH-cam is exposing his music to a new generation who, perhaps, will eventually have the maturity to understand what Fogelberg created.

My friend Patty Sneed (RIP - She passed away May 21,2022) introduced me to the music of Dan Fogelberg in 1975 when she put the album Captured Angel on the turntable for me to listen to at her mother's house in Gilbert, Arizona otherwise I would probably never have heard of Dan my favorite singer/songwriter. I wrote this poem for Dan in July 2000 and when I went to see him in concert at Humphrey's By The Bay that month I had it framed, and the stage manager put it in Dan's dressing room and I asked one of the band members after the concert if Dan took it with him when he left and he said yes.
    A Poem For Dan Fogelberg
Once again I return to another world … A world only known to poets...
Inadequacy fills my soul… To eulogize the living…
The legacy we think we know… To paint on this page my feelings…
How can one, where does one begin… He commands the poets’ pen…
Cloaks our spirit with his verse… At what cost, at what cost…
His yearning for love forever fills the inkwell… But does the fire fuel the fire…
Does his mistress, the empty page, keep him from redemption…
If so, forget the sirens beckoning and take love…
His song, our song, the song of countless hearts since God’s first breath…
And we’ve been blessed by this, his curse and gift…
His songs make us cry, his tears write his song… For how long, for how long…
Would we trade his music, to set his heart forever free…
To love without restraint, or would one Judas him for a song…
Could I write what he feels when the door is left open…
As he awakens and turns to find only the empty page…
I will try to fill some space for him this time…
How many times must rose petals dry… Falling one by one to the floor…
How many times will hearts shatter… Yet return for the pain once more…
When will the love that is captured… Not change and need to be freed…
When will the need to feel love be fulfilled… Who will fulfill that need…
So now my painting ends… We’ve never met, but we are friends…
From myself and other fans… Thanks again… Thanks again…

From my hometown. I actually wrote an article for a local press about Dan. The cool kids went to Bergan High School, where his father was the leader of the band. I went to Richwoods years later, and the tact that our two schools comingled meant something. The first time I ever heard real music was Netherlands blasting through a room with open windows. in downtown Peoria. I felt the breeze and I knew something had awakened in me!~

What's even sadder, and pure genius, is his very last song "Birds" fades out with the same intro tone that this song fades in on. "Birds" is him saying goodbye to all of his fans, and this song says " morning is coming, you can't stop it, so enjoy it". When I played Birds and then immediately played To The Morning, I couldn't help but just cry and mourn his passing. RIP Dan.

Dan never needs a band to back him up.. He locks into the soul and just performs from the heart.
I love this album, as much as it didn't get good reviews when it came out it is top of many Fogelberg's fan list.
I listened to this song with my ear buds one late afternoon at Grand Teton's national park camping along don't remember what lake it was. Laying against a small hill in tall grass waving in the summer breeze the sun was setting across the full view of the peak's of the grand and the sisters. As beams of the sun spilled across the lake like fingers and onto the field.
This song I couldn't have timed it more perfectly (By just chance no doubt) from beginning to end as the piano faded out the sun disappeared behind the mountain..
I simply cried with joy and goosebumps and remember thinking in my head to myself, "this was my personal epiphany of being where I was suppose to be at that time and place". That doesn't happen very often but when it does it brings a sense of peace that no matter what life brings you it will be OK. No artist has this touch of peoples souls anymore, it just sounds done before or plastic with no feeling music today.
I am blessed to have grown up during this era of pureness in music. Rest in the peace you brought to all of us Dan, you deserve it.

My go-to music when I'm pondering life; Where I've been, what I've done, family, friends, years gone by. I'm so glad a dear friend turned me on to Dan's music back in the 70's. I've been a fan ever since and own all his albums. Dan's influences, musical parents, books read, time spent learning instruments and honing his craft makes for a great songwriter and singer. He didn't have to wear heavy makeup, costumes, pyrotechnics, wild attire or eat strange creatures on stage to draw a crowd. His talent alone drew them to drive for miles and await his turn on the stage. There won't be another like him for awhile. Love ya, bro

Dan Fogelberg’s music is timeless. One of the best concerts in my life was seeing him in Houston in the summer of 1986 in the 15th row at The Summit with an amazing band and a chance to experience his guitar skills in person. The poignancy and emotion in some of the songs he’d written about his divorce were also moving. Dan Fogelberg left us way too soon, his music lives on.

You read all the comments on this string and truly feel the impact of this man. Dan's music is somewhat like the Bible of Living & Life, having to read and re-read his lyrics many times over ones lifetime. With each reading you connect deeper and deeper to the man and realize his poetic talent was so deep and meaningful. To have him back if just for a day in our lives asking him questions on his inspirations for the songs, their meanings that came from his mind, imagination and experiences. I am proud to say I was blessed to have had this man's music raise me during my early years of life, knowing every word to every song until life catches up and you kinda just sort of move on to other things. One thing is for certain though, you can always "go back home" and Dan's music definitely brings me back home to my childhood and adolescence, a more innocent age so to speak. I predict if I have music playing on my last days of life on earth that I will be playing this mans music and gift to our world.

Comparing any singer/songwriter with Dan Fogelberg would be unfair t. He was in a class of his own. A league of one, a league of his own.

I got turned on to his "Homefree" album in 1978 and I would play this song over and over and over on the record player. Back when you had to actually manually pick up the arm.

J.D. Treadway:::: It was but this was his debut album, so it doesn't sound as planed as Nether Lands.
That's what gives it that innocence and purity of not knowing. It didn't appeal to the critics at the time but to his fans it worked. Today it's one of the top three.

Netherlands is another one that I am especially fond of. But then you consider "Tucson Arizona ( Gazette), and it's Spanish guitar, or "Scarecrows Dream". It's like trying to pick a favorite out a whole bucket of gold! 😂
