No matter the instrument he picked up, his talent shone through. With a gift for writing and singing, there seemed to be no limit to his musical abilities. Yet, when he was on the verge of turning 20, the late-great Dan Fogelberg found himself in the familiar plight of many aspiring artists: struggling to make money while searching for a way to get that big break. Yeah, back in 1970, Dan had that ‘hippie, free spirit,’ loafing around with long hair and moccasins with no day job. He had dropped out of the University of Illinois and was performing folk tunes at coffee houses in Champaign, Illinois.
Then one evening he was lying in bed when his girlfriend suddenly woke him out out of sound sleep and told him to hurry and get dressed. At first, Dan resisted, no doubt ticked off that she interrupted his sleep, but his girlfriend persisted. GET UP!! IrvingAzoff is at a bar in Champagne and he wants to hear you perform! GET UP NO! Begrudging, Dan got up, put on some clothes, and went with his girlfriend to a frat bar near the University of Illinois campus called….get this…Chances Are.. It was a Friday night, so the place was packed to the gills with drunken college students. Not the ideal place for Dan to impress the man who had the ingenuity and the power to catapult his…shall we say…less than spectacular career. Irving Azoff was also a college dropout, but he was building a robust business booking rock bands in the area, principally an upstart act named R-E-O Speedwagon.
Irving was far from the legendary artist manager & music mogul that he became, but he was on his way. Irving was the kind of connector that Dan needed to kindle his career. On that pivotal night, Dan played a solo set at Chance Are, with the frat kids spilling beer all over each other, but in spite of the revelry of the club, Dan’s talent was undeniable, and Irving was duly impressed...

Longer is an ok song. Always thought it was the equivalent of a Jr. High love note. Preferred Same Old Lang Syne, a grownup song about grownup lives. Do agree though that his music is phenomenal.

Ugh! I waited the whole video for Adam to talk about Leader of the Band and he never did. Sheesh! Way too much gooey praise for Longer. Leader and his relationship with his Dad would have been much more interesting to delve into.
I can't keep from crying every time I hear "Leader of the Band." Truly one of the most powerful, poignant songs ever written.
Run for the Roses and his gift to New Year Eve,those two events, have never been the same, for me.
Met my husband at college and we married after graduation in 1975. He went on to graduate school and we eventually ended up at the Univ. Of Delaware. Dan Fogelberg was our absolute favorite artist. Being a poor graduate school couple, we saved our pennies to buy the next Dan Fogelberg album. Do you have any idea how excited we were when we learned Dan was going to perform on April 12, 1979 at the Univ. Of Delaware?We had to get tickets. It was Dan by himself, on stage, with his guitar. No flash, no theatrics - just pure heaven. Three years later our son was born- we named him Dan.
Longer was our wedding song in 1981, I just knew the first time I heard it. Our anniversary is in 3 days, 43 years....thank you Dan.
Ours also 1980. Still play it every anniversary, 44 years together this past April.
In the early 80’s I was completely in love with this woman who would never give the time of day.
One night I happen to see her at a local bar. I went outside to get some air and ran into her in the parking lot. Im not sure what possessed me, but I started singing “Longer” to her. She loved that a guy would sing her a song she absolutely loved.
I got completely caught up in the moment. Her eyes never left mine and my heart was ready to explode. It was perfect and I thought maybe I had a chance until her friends came out of the bar and wanted to leave.
She gave me a kiss on the cheek and said thank you.
I never saw her after that.
It was a moment Ive never forgotten.

I can't get behind the eyes of a woman years younger than me and unknown to me. All I can do is get behind your eyes and wonder why she would have completely disappeared immediately afterwards.

My friend’s family was very close friends with Dan’s family back in Illinois, and When she got married, Dan sang this song at her wedding. I wasn’t there, but I have seen the wedding videos.

I remember my brother coming home one night in the early 70’s, telling me he saw this singer/songwriter at a bar in Peoria named Dan Fogelberg and bought his Home Free album from him. My brother said, “this guy is going places!” He did!
So it sounds like you're from near, but not in, Peoria; where'd you grow up or live at the time? I'm from Galesburg - 45 minutes NW on 74. Always thought it was so cool that he was from Peoria - & his dad was a band teacher (I was a band geek flute player lol).

Thanks for sharing this tribute. I met Dan in 1982 in Bangor, Maine and while our time was short, we shared a good conversation about music, Maine and sailing. It bothered me when news broke of his death from prostrate cancer. Little did I know that 10 years later, I would come down with stage 3 prostrate cancer. I reached out to his widow and found out our diagnosis was very similar with the same aggressive Gleason scores. Prostrate cancer treatment has come a long way, but early detection is the key... get tested and monitor any changes in your PSA! I'm in full remission, thank God. God bless and again thanks.
If you had Cancer I would expect you would know how to pronounce it and spell it, you repeatedly said prostrate cancer, prostrate is the act of laying flat on the ground face down, PROSTATE is the male organ that gets PROSTATE cancer, were you making this story up? If you did have cancer I hope you are well.
I am very glad to read this comment. I am in remission as well. Those that have fallen to this particular form of cancer reads like a "Who's Who" in music. Dan Fogelberg, Frank Zappa, David Sanborn, Johnny Ramone, Ndugu, Lee Kerslake, & Andre Watts, And the list is even longer for musicians that are dealing with this affliction. i knew and loved his music and i have a somewhat different personal connection. Dan died Oct 16, 2007. i knew of Dan's death and his cause of death.
I had prostrate cancer surgery, 2 days later, on Dec 18, 2007. Dan was 54 , i was only 48. it was hard not to think i had only 6 years left of my life.
i made it and i am still hear today, wounded by the experience but still here. getting by

My Husband died on 12/17/07 of brain cancer… so I figure when I get to heaven and look up my husbands mansion, Dans will be in the same neighborhood 😊❤️😊

Very bittersweet memories…the same thing happened to me.
He told a story during a concert in Austin about that song, and said it was originally pretty bawdy. He and some friends around the piano made up the song to the tune of the 1821 overture, then he cleaned up the lyrics and rewrote the music. You can still hear the melody if the 1821 overture in the first line...

Lifelong hard rock and metal head here, who is also a huge Fogelberg fan. Some of my favorites of Dan are:
Scarecrow’s Dream, Dancing Shoes, Nether Lands, Beggar’s Game, The Lion’s Share, Sketches, Only The Heart May Know (Duet with Emmylou Harris), Gypsy Wind, of course, Leader of the Band and - a song I can’t hear without crying, since I sang it to my daughter when she was little - Run For The Roses. What an artist and what a loss for anyone with ears and a soul. R.I.P., Dan - you are so sorely missed. 💔

I found Dan with his hits from the Innocent Age album and then enjoyed his entire catalog. I met my future wife in 1983. We did not have that much in common, but we both loved Dan's music. It was with that music that our hearts became one, and we grew up together with that music as our underpinning.. We married in 1985 and still listen to Dan together today..

48 years married this year. I was singing Dan's songs with my older brother who played the guitar really well, in the late 70's.
I married his best friend.
I was a 15 year old teenage girl in 1981, the year Hard To Say came out.
I couldn't believe it when I heard the song. Even though it was written from a man's point of view, the words "...every time the sky begins to snow, you cry..." shocked me. For years, every time we had the first snow of winter, I would cry. I couldn't explain why. But those words hit me in my soul.
As I grew older, many more songs became relatable. Such a beautiful lyricist. Such a talent.
And such a gorgeous man.
Saw Dan Fogelberg at the Rainbow theatre in Denver back in the mid to late 80’s. He was touring with his blues band. I attended the second show and people were leaving the venue looking to sell their tickets on the cheap because there was a rumor that it wasn’t Dan Fogelberg, but some guy fronting a blues band under Fogelberg’s name. I purchased the ticket from a guy on the cheap and listened to one of the best concerts I’ve ever heard. He could rock. He opened the show stating that despite the rumors, he was, in fact, Dan Fogelberg. Played blues standards. Incredible.

For me the Dan Fogelberg that catches me in the throat was Run For The Roses. That perfectly captured a child’s first step, first exploring the world, first everything
It does, doesn't it...yet it was written about racehorses, for ABC Sports' Kentucky Derby coverage.
One night my young daughter randomly asked me who was my favorite male singer, I told her Dan Fogelberg. I wanted to show her pictures of who I was talking about so went to his website. Unfortunately, it just happened to be THE DAY (12/16/07) his wife posted his passing. I was floored. I still can't explain the cosmic connection, but have always felt a kinship with him through his music and his love for Colorado. Netherlands has always been a go to when I need a mood shift, and had the pleasure of seeing him live in 1988 in Indianapolis. Just such a great artist and man! Miss what could have been, but how lucky we are to have such a collection of rich music history. Rock on.....

@michaelnorman3393 I first heard that album from one of my wife's brothers. It's really a great one.
Dan's life has touched mine deeply, for much of it. My wife and I met in early 1980, and "Longer" became our song. I still tear up when I hear its opening. We had it played at our wedding in 1983. It was our song for over 40 years.
We saw Dan in concert, finally, in Raleigh in 2004. It was one of his last live concerts, and it was great.
I read Dan's wife's Jean's memoirs on Dan's last few months, and was moved by her description of giving Dan permission to die - also very moving.
In 2021, my wife had a stroke, and it was a brain tumor. It was a year from Hell after 37 years of marriage.
When it was clear she was at the end, I remembered what Jean said in that memoir, and I told my wife that it was OK to go, I love you, and we'll be ok. She immediately stopped breathing and passed.
Jean was right. Permission to leave one's loved ones is a thing.
I'm still moved by his music. "Birds", his very last song, is so very sad. And for some reason, I tear up every time I hear "Stars" which you played a clip of early in your "Longer" video.

Just a few weeks ago it was the 3rd Anniversary of my wife's passing. At every major event of my life with Yolanda I would dedicate a song for her. Anniversary, Birthday she got a song I played on Social Media for her. Even after her death, I have continued to do this. For this year on the anniversary of the day I lost her, I dedicated Longer to her. Thanks Prof. I am and have been one of your biggest supporters for years.
My girlfriend and I started listening to Fogelberg in the 70's and went to a few of his concerts. We've been together 47 years and still enjoy listening to him. Another artist who left us much too soon. RIP Dan Fogelberg. Your music will live on forever.

I'm from Dan's hometown, Peoria Illinois. Needless to say I'm a big fan. I was a teenager in the early 80's and loved listening to him on the radio and knowing " leader of the band" and "Auld lang syne" were written about his dad and his old girlfriend in Peoria.. his dad was a band director and the store where he met his old girlfriend in Auld lang syne, is still there.. in fact the street the store is on an honorary street named after him.. and we also have a statue of him... he is very honored in Peoria. .. he was great!!
I saw Dan play three times. The most impressive performance was at Arrowhead in 78 ,I believe. He was on tour with the Eagles . He came out alone and announced his band was broke down on the road ,so he would be solo. He used his skills playing guitar and piano to two standing ovations. I was and am still blown away . I fully understood what he tried to say to me and thank God for the treasure he sent us in him. It's only when listen that you learn....
Years ago I had the incredible opportunity to see Dan play in Parkwest Utah. It was just him, his guitar, and grand piano. I was completely mesmerized. He was a master musician, singer/songwriter. Terribly sad he is gone. The world is missing out, that's for sure.

I was there as well. I was 8 months pregnant and made that climb up the mountain to see him. It was a struggle, but totally worth it.
I remember hearing his beautiful voice and seeing a shooting star in the background. It was a beautiful night.
My husband and sons were there. I had to miss the vacation due to a death in my family. I still regret I didn't get to see this performance. Gone way too soon.
I'll give you the reader's digest version. I dated a girl who had his first three albums. I learned every song I could off those albums. I ended up playing those songs live while living in Nashville. A novicuoíe player asked me to teach him how to Play his songs. We became good friends. I married his sister. His sister is the one who turned him on to Dan Fogelberg. I have a glorious Phoenix tattoo on my left arm. We've been married 32 years. Thank you Dan Fogelberg.
Every time someone mentions their taste in music, I always respond with, "Dan Fogelberg is my all-time favorite."
I was born in 1970. Was raised in a family of musicians where through their encouragement my love of music became broad. I remember being young sitting behind my dad drumming with his band Five wheel Drive playing covers of popular rock/pop classics. Then him moving into country during the 80's and also eventually playing stand up bass in bluegrass while alsos starting a sound company Cardinal Sound that would provide sound reinforcement for Bluegrass Festivals around New England for greats like Alison Krauss when she was young, Doc Watson, Jerry Rice and more. During the 70's and 80's I would always dive into our family vinyl collection to maybe find something new. there was always one album I would come across and would listen to it for hours over and over. Dan Fogelberg's Souvenirs. During the 90's I moved to Montana following the love of my life. When sadly things ended with her, Dan's music magically came back into my life when I came across his Greetings from the West release. over the next few years with my brother in our 20's, Living in the Gallatin National Forest/Bozeman out of our tent. We would play for others in the local parks and Dan's songs were favorites which was so cool to witness with how young the crowd was. Same Old Lang Syne, Make Love Stay, Leader of the Band, There's a Place in the World for a Gambler, Believe in Me, Old Tennessee, Cry in the Forest, Song from Half Mountain, Changing Horses, Souvenirs. Thank you Dan for sharing such a Timeless legacy of love and incredible song writing. You are dearly missed.

In 1975, in a record store looking for a present for a girlfriend, I found “Souvenirs” and promptly shoplifted it. I was 16 with an attitude, but decided to listen to it first in case it was crap. My gf never got that present. After intense listening for a week, I went back and sheepishly paid for the darn thing. Dan’s voice redirected my attitude towards music and singing. Thank you Dan. Sorry Carol.

Dan Fogelberg is one of my favorite artists. He was such a great folk rock singer songwriter & storyteller. He also played multiple instruments such as guitar, bass, piano & mandolin. I had his double album "The Innocent Age" from 1981. It had so many good songs on it such as "Same Old Lang Syne", "Hard To Say", "Leader Of The Band", "Run For The Roses" etc. We lost him much too soon in 2007.
The innocent age was also my favorite Dan Fogelberg album. Old Lang Syne was probably my favorite song. It reminded me of a high school girlfriend who I ran into about 6 or 7 years after we graduated. We experienced the same nostalgic moments expressed in Old Lyng Syne. But the song really hit me hard a few years later after I heard she'd committed suicide.😢😢 To this day, I keep thinking, "Why didn't she call me! We could have worked it out! I remember playing that song over and over and crying my eyes out. So sad!🥺

In 1980, "Longer" was the first song I ever heard from Dan Fogelberg. I loved the song and immediately bought his Phoenix album. He had a great string of hits in the early 80's which include 2 of my other favorites "Same Auld Lang Syne" and "Leader Of The Band." He was a great singer-songwriter and is very much missed. Well done, Professor! Dan has been one of my favorite artists from the late 70's. Before he passed, I went to his website and read what Dan had written about his illness, prostate cancer. He said for men to get checked regularly by their doctor and not to let ten or fifteen seconds of discomfort deter them from being checked. He wrote that ten or fifteen seconds could save men from going through the terrible time he was then having with the disease. I took his advice then and hope any man reading this to do the same!

I remember I was in high school when it came out. I heard the song and initially thought it was another bubble gum soft rock song. The thing was, when you combined the lyrics and the music together, it became a transcendent piece of art that will indeed last through the ages. This song is not just another love song, it's a song about Love Eternal. Those songs come by once in a lifetime. Thank you, Dan Fogelberg.

Thank you for this tribute. I've been a Fogelberg fan since the 70's. I was shocked at his passing. I recently took a 1900 mile roundtrip drive to TX from SC. My USB drive has a ton of an eclectic mix of MP3s, and he is well represented. His songs helped the drive. "Power of Gold" played as I neared the Mississippi River on the drive out.
I saw Dan Fogelberg in 1977 at the Mississippi River Festival in Edwardsville, IL. It was my first concert. I loved the albums Souvenirs and Nether Lands. While Dan is remembered for his ballads I loved Crow, As the Raven Flies, Part of the Plan, Illinois, etc. He has been credited as an influence by such diverse artists as Garth Brooks and Myles Kennedy who called Dan a remarkable songwriter. What a tremendous loss when Dan passed. I thank you for putting this tribute to this talented musician on your channel.

After 17 years since Dan's death, for some reason its hitting me more now than before. I'm still saddened that he passed at such an early age. His voice, his lyrics, his music was just so good. I wish their were more musical artists like him today. I've been listening to his songs a lot lately, it brings back my teen years. My wedding song back in 1982 was Longer, just the perfect song. It must have been a good luck song, me and my wife are celebrating 42 years of marriage. God bless this musician and thank you for such great songs. "Longer" was my favorite song when it was out. I was 8. I would do the flugelhorn with my mouth. I remember my dad saying, "How does it go, Bill?" I would do the notes of that part. 😊

How he is not in the now very phoney RRHOF is beyond me. Tear you up with a ballad or melt your face with a blazing rocker. A great songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and heartfelt singer.
First time I saw Dan was in my college days. It was just Dan, a piano and a couple of guitars. People were disappointed at first. He promised he'd bring the band next next time through. Well, he killed it. By the end of the concert everyone was standing lighters held aloft in their hands. It was an amazing evening. He got called back and offered 2 encores of songs from the 'next album'. His albums were instant buys. Anytime I was close to where he was playing ... Road Trip!

I had the absolute honor of meeting Dan Fogelberg back in the early '90s. He was as genuine and nice as I ever thought he might be. 💜
I’m at my husband in Colorado when I moved there 1979. We were both huge Dan Fogelberg fans. My husband and I were married for 40 years. He died that year 2020 and we asked to have “Longer” played at the funeral service!

Loved Dan Fogelberg's music. Lived in Peoria, Illinois, Dan's hometown, in the mid 80's. It was near Christmas time and I was driving down W. Knoxville Ave. and it was lightly snowing. As I was going down an incline in the road "Same Old Lang Syne" was playing and the snow started turning into rain just as he was singing that verse in the song. I couldn't help but get a big grin on my face and think of Dan. We lost a great musician in Dan Fogelberg. Thank you for this tribute to Dan and bringing back such a great memory. ❤🎶🎸🎹🌈

I grew up with Dan Fogelbergs music. I had every album, cassette and later CD of his music! I had the privilege of seeing him in concert twice. His music changed my life! Thanks for this fantastic tribute show!
I saw Dan and Tim at a concert in 1978/79 at Purdue University. To this day his beautiful songs take me back to great times.
His early vintage period was the best, & when I became a fan: "Part of the Plan", "As the Raven Flies", "The Last Nail", "False Faces", classic!
I have every Dan Fogelberg album. December 16 2007 will always be a sad day in history. For me every song on The Innocent Age is priceless. One of the best double albums ever. Songs like; Same Old Lang Syne, Run for the Roses, Leader of the Band, (the beautiful song about his Father), The Sand and the Foam, but for me the best song on this double album is The Reach. Its message and song construction is what typifies Dan's unique talent. The world is a much sadder place without him.

A quiet genius describes Dan Fogelberg in my mind. A pureness we don’t experience today. After being laid off from a previous job, I had to sell all my Fogelberg collection, something I very much miss. Thank you for this video!
I've been a fan of Fogelberg forever. I wake up with "To the Morning" on my alarm. That voice, and the intelligence of his lyrics. I mean...Bones in the Sky? Brilliant. I love that whole album. I miss his voice, liquid, sweet, expressive. I'm pretty sure his death hit me the hardest of any of them. Too soon gone.
Longer is one of those songs my mom would turn up on the radio back in the early 80’s. I just turned 50 and I’m still playing his amazing catalog.
I first heard Dan's Nether Lands at a high school graduation in 1979. The seniors walked out to the song and took their seats as it played. It was a seminal experience for them, and for me. So much life ahead. And Dan conveyed the feeling of that perfectly with the lyric, the music, and voice he put to that song. Thanks, Professor, for this segment on Dan. You knocked it out of the park again.

Every time I listen to Dan Fogelberg, I have a Kleenex ready. No joke - his songs bring out a tear in the eye and a lump in the throat. RIP.

My boomer mom was obsessed with Dan. His earliest albums are the soundtrack of my childhood. I got dragged to many of his concerts. I still listen to those records start to finish-especially Netherlands-and get all the feels.
One of my favorite Dan Fogelburg songs is Run for the Roses. Each year after the running of the Kentucky Derby one of our local television stations would play this tune. Hearing it always gave me cold chills and brought tears to my eyes. The lyrics are so beautiful and descriptive as are most of Dan’s songs. Pure poetry! I was fortunate to see Dan in concert in Louisville, KY in the late seventies. In fact, I shook his hand before he walked on stage. It was an absolutely wonderful show in which my friends and I cheered so much we lost our voices. R.I.P Dan your songs were pure magic for this Kentucky woman.😊

I still have my LP of 'Phoenix' and to this day both the Title track and 'Face The Fire' still give me chills.. The raw emotion and conviction expressed in those lyrics cannot ever be denied!

The messages of resilient self preservation and of learning history's lessons against weapons danger and about saving the Earth and its inhabitants in those lyrics were very important to Dan; he performed both those 1979 sangs at the 1981 concert I saw of his.
All my Fogelberg music is still in LP form. I never donated those from my 100’s of LP’s. I think I going to go download his catalog to share with my 85yo father.
@@catpaladin1 I think even nicer would be to buy them in CD form if you can afford to, from his official site or independent music retailer, so Dan's estate or his widow Jean gets some royalties. If you're thinking of some download site that charges, cool; I've never downloaded music so I don't know how common those are. Sharing with your father is great of course; mine died eight years younger than yours is. It's great you still have your Dan Fogelberg albums; so do I. I have extras of some I want to give to someone who wants them. Some of his later albums were never on vinyl LP.
Dan's music is a staple in my life, as my eldest brother just passed and he was responsible for me getting into songwriting , I have re worded Leader of the Band that I would pay tribute to him on the 27th of this month,
My mom's family is very musical. Gramps played with Marty Robbins one night, mom had a scholarship to Peabody back in the early 60's. They both loved Dan Fogelberg's tenor. There was just a purity to it, like a Chuck Berry song: "How else would you do that?"
For me THE Dan Fogelberg song was "Same Old Lang Syne". The pathos flows out throughout the song. The lyrics are like painting a picture with words. You can see them sitting in the car, snow falling. Just gorgeous...
When I think of straight purity of voice it’s Dan and Karen Carpenter hands down. Probably never see the likes of their gifts again. RIP ❤

My father passed away last May. On the way back to my home in Utah from Colorado, the song "Leader of the Band" came on the radio. I had to stop in the middle of nowhere and just let Dan's voice and lyrics bring back a flood of memories. I've always liked Dan Fogelberg's music but now it's so much more meaningful to me.
I saw Dan at a small venue in the early '70s, maybe 30 people in attendance, and I recognized his talent immediately. It was the best $5 I ever spent. When my father died, I listened to "Leader of the Band" over and over. Such a wordsmith and a master of melody.

Dan fogelberg is my favorite artists of all time I was so sad when he died.
My strongest connection is probably with his "Same Old Lang Syne," always in heavy rotation on pop radio at Christmas time. Depending on how my life is going from year to year makes me either sweetly nostalgic or, you know, suicidal. Beautiful and impactful either way.
The moment I heard longer on the radio, I was hooked! At one time I had his album Netherlands on vinyl, cassette and 8-track so I could take him everywhere! I miss him and I demand that the Rock and Roll Hall of fame puts him in where he belongs!
How can you not love his beautiful voice?! The first time I heard Longer Than I was floored! And he did such a beautiful tribute to his dad in Leader Of The Band. And those two are just the beginning!
Thank you for this beautiful, insightful tribute to the musical genius and the man. Dan’s passing still hurts my heart. His first album blew me away at 13 years-old. I couldn’t stop listening to it. My friends older brother found it in the record store sale bin in 1973. If you didn’t grow up in the 70s you can’t comprehend how much music was out there, with more coming out each week. Not unusual for first albums to go unnoticed. He went to U of I and knew of Dan. I was in eighth grade and because we had great radio in Chicago I had quite a record collection, including every Zeppelin album up to that year. But this record was like nothing I had ever heard. Thank you for giving Dan the respect he deserves. His career was incredible but he didn’t play the Hollywood game. One hit wonders got more attention when they passed than Dan. Gives you insight into how it all works. Celebrities who dominate aren’t the most talented. They have the best publicists. I miss Dan. I agree with you, his legacy will continue to grow. Especially now that Irving now has some control of his catalog, thanks to Dan’s wife Jean!❤😊
I was at U of IL in those days, and used to volunteer at a coffeehouse in the basement of a Unitarian church in town, The Red Herring, where local singer/songwriters would play for tips. I was there to learn guitar, and Dan Fogelberg was the star performer. He was an excellent finger-style guitarist, and a group of us would sit around him so he could show us tips and tricks. Somewhere I have a tape of a record that the coffeehouse produced highlighting its most talented performers. There's a couple of songs on there that showed up on Dan's first album. That was a very unique time in music history. We were all very pleased to see Dan's success, he was very gifted.

My favorite song of Dan Fogelberg is 'Leader of the Band'. My father passed away a while back. Every year on his birthday I light a candle and play 'Leader of the Band', it makes me feel close to him again.

What a wonderful tribute to Dan Fogelberg. My memory’s begin from one of my older sister’s being a huge Jackson Browne fan and another was a huge Dan Fogelberg fan. So I was fortunate while young to hear all the great late 60’s/ early 70’s “folk” rock (ie America, Eagles, etc).
Thanks for highlighting Dan’s amazing musicianship. And, as was stated, as a lyricist he was absolutely amazing. I feel if he had been only a poet, his words would have placed him among the greats of American poetry/literature. His words are Incomparable.
I love everything he wrote. One of my absolute favorites that didn’t get much recognition is “The Reach” from the album.
Got to see Dan play at Starplex outdoor theater in Dallas in the early 90's. He said then that Longer was a grind to play after awhile but, he finally realized he owed a lot to the song and to the fans for loving it so much.

I heard Dan Fogelberg the first time when I was 13 or 14 and it WAS Longer on my oldies station. I bawled, and wanted to listen more of this artist who captured my emotions. No crush or anything, but tons of respect. You could say a platonic love developed. 💕
I think I own every album he ever made. He has always been a favorite of mine. Always will be. His music lives on, thank goodness.
