  • Bengaluru has run out of water, with the city’s techies fleeing back home and luxury apartments imposing several norms to ensure judicial use of the limited resource. Is Bengaluru heading towards doomsday? Is the lack of political will across successive governments the most important reason behind this? Ex Infosys CFO and Bangalorean, Mohandas Pai speaks to Faye.

I stay in Bangalore in prestige falcon city (our Society s internal e-mail is all over the news and memes). We currently have water cuts between 10am-5pm (during which only STP water comes in the toilets). We are able to manage but unsure what the situation will be if this continues till ample rain restores water in reservoirs. Pool and clubhouse water is shut to prevent misuse. My nanny and maids are paying 1.5X of water cost during these months. Also not sure if there is enough water to tackle any emergency fire hazards. I wouldn’t say B’lore is unlivable but it is disappointing and scary what over construction and unplanned growth has done to this city. We have brought this upon ourselves. (Other issues like - negative sentiment against immigrants, cases of road rage, traffic etc. add to the issues that impact most people. Better Air quality , non extreme weather and career opportunities are the reasons why we are still here) .

@Faye, I watched this clip because of you taking up issues of public interest which you had been continuing since Mirror Now days. Unfortunately, the "gentleman", you invited to speak on this issue is neither an expert fit or qualified to speak on the subject. He is only bad mouthing his political adversaries instead of offering solutions. This can be gauged by his negative opinion on Delhi AAP govt which is not a subject matter of the discussion. Has he visited Delhi, to see first hand the AAP govts performance on education (govt schools) and public health (govt hospitals) in addition to free 24 hours electricity and water. Inspite what others criticise it as freebies, the budget of Delhi AAP govt is in surplus and it has the highest percentage funds allocated in budget to education and public health which none of the States except Punjab now have done in the history of independent India. Request you not to invite political persons for discussions on public matters and issues. Invite only non political experts having domain knowledge of the subject and offer constructive solutions.

@FayeDSouza, I have been supporting your news channel because I believed in your journalism, you were a Bengaluru girl. You should have never put this question out. Why should we move out of this city and keep blaming the government. For the last 8 years, me as a Bangalorean have been working with and supporting groups to save this city. The amount of tree felling that has happened is in lakhs, not even hundreds. We signed so many petitions, got so many projects banned to save trees. We have been doing Rain water harvesting since 2006. Please spread awareness of the actual problems. The city can still be saved and turned around. It is not the fault of Bengaluru, it is the fault of people who are living here.

People have been apathetic to trees being cut in Bangalore. Born wnd raised here I believe Bangalore is nothing without trees. Trees bring the required low pressure area to have rainfall. The last two years the cuty has become hotter to unbearable temperatures. Between 2019 to 2022, more than one lakh 85 thousand trees have been cut here. Governments irrespective of any party are here to make money. Only a handful of people are trying to stop the government from unnecessary projects in the city. The remaining don't care but troll. The next time there is tree felling in your area. Report to the environmental protection groups you know. MDP himself is not speaking about the trees dissappearing but brings in a lot of questioning on the government. If some places don't have fixed water supply, of course people will dig borewells to have water! It is government's job to check ground-water level and water-supply before allowing apartments and borewells to be built.

Money may be there....but where are the lakes, wetlands, greencover and rajakaluves to recharge ground water?? Meanwhile, while the Kaveri is immortalized in film songs, it's left to die; no policy to conserve that..And where are the real estate developers??? They are still promising Apartment complexes with Swimming pools and jacuzzis...they need to be partners in providing stewardship for water management (should have been done 25 years ago). Now, in this season nothing can be done. Only evacuation.

ITS GAME OVER situation for Bengaluru. I am Benglorean living in this city from 4 generations since even before independence.
We were in this situation back in 1970s extreme cumulative drought years and that is when govt decided to bring Kaveri water to this city.

Here Tanker mafias and politician are making money in this crisis. Suggestion for work from home is a good suggestion. Bangalore and Chennai needs excess water from north which goes as waste during floods to be channelised to South.

When I first came to Bengaluru in 2015 and I used to drive around to explore the city, I used to see people dumping garbage by lake shores, methane bubbles in Bellandur lake forming every year, people not maintaining roads/infrastructure, etc. and I often used to point out to my apartment owner in casual chats and also to my friends and family that I have never seen people be so reckless around their own city/state infrastructure. Why aren't they bothered? Why are people so desperately selfish that they do not care about their very own city that gives them a house to live and their daily bread-and-butter comes from this very city. Why are locals here so indifferent to civic issues and all wealthy folks who own businesses/startups, most of them being non-Kannadigas, do not seem to bother much?
But all these thoughts were always discarded by whosoever I used to speak to as "yeah whatever!". I used to feel sad as a then-resident of Bengaluru. I kinda fell in love with the city but the people who were born and brought up in Bengaluru seemed to have abandoned the city as an undesired object lying around taking unnecessary energy/space to sustain.
It is sad to see this state of Bengaluru. While I am no longer a full time Bengaluru resident, work often brings me to Bengaluru for a few days to weeks every once in a while, I hope to see this city come back to its state of thriving.

Governments do what sells. The current government was elected on the promise of freebies, so that’s what they’re providing now, can’t blame them. Voters have to introspect what’s their priorities. Whether we want to get lured by shortcuts of freebies or want long term good governance.

What were Mohandas Pai and Tejasvi Surya doing in the last five yrs when BJP was ruling and water tables were going down??? They were busy defending a corrupt BJP govt which was minting money during covid crisis. If they had given their precious wisdom to BJP govt then preventive steps could have been taken.

It's High time to change BJP govt who's been giving blind favour to North Indians only.

Techies like Pai are responsible for the mess. I am sure this fellow has no Rain Water Harvesting at home. He might have not heard of Dakshina Pinakini or Vrishabhavati. His colleagues like Sudha Murthy are the same.
