I rode with Dan on Sat while he was testing out his new Supersix Evo, he's properly strong. I wonder how much quicker he would have been on his super light climbing bike rather than his aero bike?! There's another great climb in North Wales called Gwaenysgor hill (The Wall). Not quite as steep as this one in Harlech at 'only' 33%, but it's longer and rather gruelling. The view from the hillside is rather splendid too.

Went up a road last week that was over 5km long at 14% average but the road surface was nowhere near as good as that Welsh hill. The Bastille in Grenoble also looks steeper than that hill.

@@ahahm3 Are you ready for a big nerdy explanation you didn't ask for? Gears are all about ratios. And those ratios indicate how many turns of the rear wheel you will get for each turn of the cranks. lower ratios give more torque and climbing ability, higher ratios enable more speed to be achieved.
Let's talk about those ratios: A ratio of 1 to 1 or 1:1 is 1 turn of the cranks giving one turn of the rear wheel. This would be a pretty good gear for climbing. If you had a 23 tooth chainring up front (on the crank) and a 23 tooth sprocket at the back (on the rear) you would have this 1:1 ratio - as 23 and 23 are equal, the ratio is 1:1. Now, a high gear like 50 tooth ring up front and 10 tooth sprocket at the back, gives a ratio of 5:1. You get 5 turns of the rear wheel for each turn of the cranks, but you'd only really be able to use this on the flat and downhills. This would be top gear on a lot of bikes
So as Cameron said, swapping his front chainrings for smaller ones gave the bike lower gear ratios across all gears, making it easier to climb

cameron robertson no, he’s saying he’s changed it (from a now common 50/34 chainset) to a 53/39 chainset and a 23 tooth as the lowest gear on the cassette. This used to be standard racing setup and would have made it really difficult to go up any steep hill, let alone this one...

I couldn't pedal straight up them even in the lowest gears, but I got really good at traversing back and forth to go higher and higher. When I made the turn I would accelerate a little to gain some speed. Doing this, I could then get to the top and go on my way.

None of the roads near me, in Alton, Illinois, USA, are that long but several of the streets here are well over 40 degrees for 2-3 blocks (some 300+ meters) making it a serious challenge as well as training ground. I'm years out from tackling them, myself, and never see anyone cycling the steeper parts but I think Dan could appreciate it. By the way, the steeper streets are mostly brick laid in the late 1800s to early 1900s so that cars and city vehicles can keep traction (even when it is dry), NO ONE attempts them when they are wet.

Personally if I tried that on my practical hybrid bike, my aorta would have exploded less than half way up before the even the really steep part assuming I hadn't fallen off long before that.
I would have to walk my bike up that hill and I'd still be breathing as heavily as that first guy.

Extremly impressive! 36 degrees is in fact 40%. I was wondering if it would be more efficient to run up the hill instead of biking it. At that incline due to traction limitations and the weight of the bike it may not help you that much to be on a bike instead of on your feet. While running you have more direct access to your glutes than while biking I assume but I am not sure. Maybe something to try. :-) :-) :-) (I am sure that if there was big water or mud puddles to cross during the climb then no contest running is the way to go. :-) :-)

In engineering (also other disciplines) “slope” may be different, but in CYCLING, when we say “this climb has 8%” means that each 10km on the road we gain 800mts in altitude. So, IS NOT the height divided by horizontal run (imaginary in real life), IS the height divided by the real travelled length (that you can see in the odometer) . So , 100 % is equal to 90 degrees. That is what “slope” means IN CYCLING. And therefore, yes , 40% equals 36 degrees.
