    UCI should organize a new race in the streets of San Francisco, through all these "wall" climbs, just like Roubaix goes looking for cobblestone roads. It would be an instant classic.

    Way back in the early 2000's there was a pro bicycle race in San Francisco. Lance and the Posties were in it. I think it was called the Tour of San Francisco or something . The riders made multiple laps of the course which included some really steep hills. The nice part of watching the race on one of the hills was that the riders were really going slow so you could see then struggle and sweat. Some riders even zig zagged up the hills. I wish SF still had a big time pro race on the steep streets.

    • @stevehazlewood2960
      @stevehazlewood2960 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I was at that race, they went up 3 blocks of Fillmore to Broadway I think 10 times. George Hincape won the race and at the end he said " I hope I never see that street ever again."

      There was also a short, steep prologue time trial up Telegraph Hill to start the Coors Classic in 1986, shortly after the Tour de France had ended. Ron Kiefel of the 7-11 team, known for his uphill sprinting ability, won the stage by a solid margin. It was an impressive sight.

    Hi from Dunedin. Those San Francisco climbs definitely are steeper than Baldwin. The thing about Baldwin is that it's just a perfectly regular normal street, one of hundreds of steep ones in Dunedin, and when I was a kid we never really thought much about it. It was no tourist attraction then. My youngest son has the KOM.

    In the 90’s, I DROVE up Baldwin St in NZ and it was hairy even in a small sedan. The sidewalks are actually steep stairs, and the whole way up it felt like the car was about to flip backward. But the last couple SF streets you cycled up probably ARE steeper than Baldwin. Great vid; thx for sharing!

I remember before I got into cycling seeing the cyclists going up hills at as snail's pace and I'd joke "it'd be faster to just get off and walk, yada yada" and while that may be true... what former me didn't know is that: yes, the ground IS lava and you HAVE TO stay on the bike or your feet WILL literally BURN if they touch the ground. I was riding a 36-34. It was totally fine fine for SF. Lots of steep streets, but all relatively short 0:30-1:00 efforts. For longer efforts you definitely want a larger range

    I live here. This is impressive. However, I think it is clear from the video that some of these are not streets, but rather steep walkways. Take ride up or down Duncan between Douglas and Diamond Heights. It's a street with stairs for sidewalks and it scares the ... out of me to drive it. My name is Mitch too. :-)

    192 heart beats per minute says it all. I've rarely hit that rate during my mountain rides; but every time I do, I need two days to properly recover. Legs may feel okay, but the heart: "Not today, buddy!"

    I've lived in SF for a while and I bought my first ever road bike. I was living in Lombard and there are a lot of ridiculous climbing there. My favourite place though is a very soft climb to the hawk hill towards Rodeo Beach

    When I lived in San Francisco, I would take visiting friends & family down that section of Filbert Street. The approach from the west is relatively flat, and then you see the yellow diamond sign "Steep Hill." Once you roll aver the crest it s definitely quite steep. I called this block the Filbert Flop. Baker Street is also quite steep.

    I was traveling to Euboea Greece, and I had an AirBnB booked for the night. The street to reach it was easily ~30% if not more. In addition, it was super narrow and very curly.
