As much as I love Gravity Falls, this vid hits home. The fact that shows get compared instead of looked at as their own thing really bothers me

I adore Gravity Falls, & I think it deserves the vast majority of the credit it gets. Same with many of the 2010s' other big hits. But holding many new cartoons to those standards and drawing vague comparisons does nothing but undermine what those new projects set out
    to do.

Gravity Falls was a once in a lifetime show. Nothing can really replace it

thank you for making this video. aside from the overarching mystery, i dont see much of the similarities for gravity falls in modern shows like owl house and amphibia.

I mostly agree with this video, it’s a pretty fair take and it does get tiresome to see GF put on such a high pedestal, but I do feel that the criticisms these people have do have a slight point.
A lot of modern story cartoons post-Gravity Falls do fall under the same concept of “character in new world but there’s monsters and stuff”, of course, they all have elements that make themselves more distinct, but with the amount of similar show concepts releasing within such a short timeframe, it is understandable that people are starting to get a bit tired. I certainly got tired after a while.
Of course, this isn’t a new thing, there are dozens of Simpson and Family Guy clones, and if it wasn’t Gravity Falls, it would have been something else, but I really would like to see new concepts for story cartoons because they’re starting to blur together for me.
As much as I berate it, Steven Universe initially did a good job by focusing most of its story elements on its characters rather than its worldbuilding, and I think applying that framework more firmly to story cartoons could do wonders, additionally doing something like having the protagonist and deuteragonist not already knowing each other and being from different backgrounds and learning about themselves, each other, and both backgrounds (like in Star VS) could work a treat.
But yeah, it’s been nearly six years, keep Gravity Falls and any show off of a pedestal, look to innovators, and while these conceptually similar shows might not be for you, don’t discredit them altogether
    But yeah good video Geek

You make valid points Geek, folks really need to stop over simplifying and brushing off shows before giving them a try. Victor and Valentino are half brothers, btw.

If any cartoon series was truly original, there’d be like four cartoons that were original

Great video. I agree with you that people should stop comparing new shows to Gravity Falls as it gets annoying. The genre of mystery and fantasy was not created by that show.

People need to stop saying that shows that vaguely reassemble Gravity Falls are rip-off’s. Sometimes a show could take elements from Gravity Falls but still be it’s own thing. Why can’t people understand that?

It’s so annoying. Gravity Falls did not invent the mystery genre or cartoons with supernatural elements, contrary to popular belief.

Welcome To The Wayne is really freaking good, by the way. I actualy think it's sort of better than Gravity Falls in some aspects. Interestingly, Victor and Valentino, to me, is more of a similarity of Regular Show than Gravity Falls.

I agree i wish that people that shouldn’t make the comparison to a show that’s somewhat similar of premise or animation that they have just for an issue by not giving that show a chance

Gravity Falls is in my top 10 favorite shows of all time and I completely agree with everything you said in this video (well except for not liking Hooty, Hooty is based). In general I’m so tired of people just writing pieces of media off as ripoffs without seeing them just by having vague similarities. Like how people have been calling Inside Job a Rick and Morty ripoff when we literally only have a few frames of that show! Someone actually called me a pedophile for defending that show. People just really seem to overuse they term ripoff and it’s probably one of the worst aspects of media criticism these days.

Why would someone call you a pedo for defending Inside Job? There's no children in that show.

    pretty goated take, ngl
It's funny that Gravity Falls has become the codifier for this phenomenon because I don't think it gets talked about in proportion to how well beloved and historically important it is. Avatar made similar gains in the mid 00s and it gets way more engagement (albeit for several reasons) even so far into the future. It's hard not to see GF as if it were put on a bit of a pedestal; its 'untouchable' status doesn't devalue everything it brought to the table, but it makes me question why said value is measured through comparisons rather than the volatility of its message. It got big because it was allowed to do its own thing and I see no reason why we can't tackle any other new show in such a mindset. If we try to judge media based on what they set out to do, rather than our own arbitrary goals, we usually dig deeper than we expect.

It took me a while to get into Owl House because I thought it was a clone of Amphibia. Thankfully, it wasn’t a carbon copy. Sadly, I got into the fandom very late into the series’ run time.

Same for shows that inspirted GF from the past like Eerie Indiana
Around the twist and antology series like tales from the crypt and Grizzly tales for gruesome kids

i don't the comparison to ducktales (2017) to gravity falls. since one is a reboot and the other is an original series there's no reason to compare these two besides that they're both in the "science fiction" genre

    • @toon4thought
      @toon4thought 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I'll admit, I was one of those people who drew those comparisons once upon a time. Mostly for thematic elements, but also how to me it felt like the triplets' voices were trying to recreate Jason Ritter's Dipper, and it was just super jarring to me.

How deeply would you say anime's popularity is involved in this phenomenon? I'm sure not all creators intentionally try to remake Gravity Falls or Steven Universe, but I wouldn't necessarily blame viewers for thinking "I've seen this before" if the show is still written as such, unconsciously or not. It's maybe not Gravity Falls that's being copied, but Avatar still, and GF is just a Westernized, supernatural variation. Serious, serialized, anime-esque, social commentary, characters with mysterious and/or tragic backstories tackling topics supposedly not tackled by the average American kids show.
Even then, I only see this reaction pop up when certain copied elements are poorly handled - such as pacing, easy clickbait theory-baiting and mystery-mongering with no payoff, and shounen manga/anime-esque filler arcs whose production model is unique to Japan and should not be replicated for original works where the author does not need extra time to come up with extra material.
I also wonder if this backlash hints at something deeper - that viewers are sick of shows that try and fail to take themselves seriously?
