I forgot to mention it in this vid but just as an idea you COULD go the opposite route with Gyro Always On via Left Trigger Soft Pull. You could have Left Trigger pull or some other button be a mode shift to have Gyro only be on with pad touch or something else. THAT would let you recenter your view (which is my main complaint with Gyro Always On).
ExistentialEgg That’s my preferred setup for shooters. Left trigger soft is gyro enable. Left full pull is ADS. I ran into a problem though when playing Minecraft. Ultimately I’ve decided that either trigger soft pull should enable gyro, but there’s no option for both. Do you have any ideas for how to create a setup for either trigger soft pull enable gyro? Update: I have right trigger soft pull enable gyro by default. Then I added an action layer that turns on when left trigger soft pulls where gyro is left enabled. The only difference is that the left soft pull has haptic feedback and the regular one doesn’t. As far as I know there’s no way to enable it for the right pull though. Also I’ve found that any toggles I had on turn off when I left trigger soft pull, such as sneak mode. Is there a good way to handle keeping toggles on when changing action layers? Or do I need to do this using a method other than action layers?
@@brockfranklin3412 The confusing bit might be using both modeshift by trigger pull and action layers. Honestly, I'd just ditch the modeshift for gyro. Have an action layer that turns gyro always on, but map each trigger to that action layer. Having different buttons call the same action layer is, in a sense, a way to have either trigger enable gyro.
I enable my gyro on Right Trigger Soft Pull. That way I can zero in on my target as I prepare my shot on the full pull. It's easy to hip fire or ADS fire. I find that even on touch it's too much gyro!
I got asteam controller for titanfall2 since Nov.2016. I never could get the hang of the touch pad, 2 months ago i used my ps4 controller and my KD instantly went up, i have gyro always on cuz with twin sticks i can be super accurate all the time, handy for some games like just cause 3
Steam Controller has a bit of a learning curve but in my testing I found its gyro to be much more accurate and responsive than ps4 controller. To me it seems to be the most accurate gyro out there on controllers.
This ended up motivating me to try to create a workaround by setting an action layer/action set without Always On gyro and setting a button to toggle it on and off. For Battlefront 2 I've been using the setup where I have the "A" button set to toggle between Gyro on and off, I use the Left Grip as the A button for menus and jumping. I used action sets instead of layers so I could see the on-screen confirmation and the beep. So when I need to center my controller, I simply tap A to turn off the gyro, and tap it again to toggle it back on. I usually have it on with troopers and non-saber heroes. I always have it off when using lightsaber characters, and I'll occassionally turn it on in starfighters to get a bead on enemies.
Thank you for making this video! Your video is less of a rant and more of a solid explanation that convinced me to turn off the Always-on gyro. Always having to make re-centering adjustments was the specific reason I didn't realize I was having issues. I swapped my settings so that it will turn "on" the gyro when my right thumb is "not" on the touchpad. So that way as I'm moving the aim with the touchpad, I'm not having to deal with the gyro working against me. I love this controller now!!!
And just for more context, I play a lot of battlefield, and shoot from the hip to try to get that extra one second lead time on the enemy who will try to aim down sights. It is quicker for me to just lift my thumb to enable a gyro snap turn, versus pulling right trigger and firing before I'm ready, or pulling the left trigger and having to hang down sights.
In a lot of games from what I’ve played (this is a PS4 player with DS4) there’s usually an option for a horizontal reset where it snaps you to the horizon evenly which is a godsend of a feature so unless this isn’t on steam input it should be used. Then you can set your point of aim usually which it usually ends up being vertical is the issue and this directly fixes or at least simplifies that issue to a non-annoyance. It’s a bind you have to set up
Sorry for my primitive english. I use gyro always on, over time it gives you a more fluid sensation, of course i use the trakpad for fast turn or change of directions and to recenter view, the thing is that if you dont have it on, you have to learn how to aim every time you activate it, and on fast shooters is crucial, you have to compite with mouse players, for example in many games of arma 3 i end on top or near top at the end , of course i use existentialeggs settings to do it, and little adjustment, thanks for that.
I play r6 siege with my steam controller and I recently set it to gyro always on. I used to use right pad touch, but I'm finding it a bit easier and faster to use always on (as you need to be quick or dead in siege). As far as recentering, I guess I've just gotten used to sliding in the opposite direction on the trackpad. It's not for every game, I admit. I think if you don't need super quick reactions, I think activate on right pad touch would be better for you.
I dont user always on for everything but some games I've started using always on w/ touchpad to just get that maximum input because im basically always moving, always providing input. so far the only games I've prefered this with have been DOOM, CS:GO, and Dota 2 and Dota 2 was more of an experiment than anything.. which proved to be fairly successful and interestingly enough I found "always on gyro" to much MUCH nicer to use and rely on for that game than the touchpad. That said with Dota 2 I still wanted the touchpad for re-adjusting as well as a dedicated "re-center" button. Its definitely weird and takes extra time to get used to and isnt feasible for all games.
Have you had a change of heart on gyro always on? I tried with aiming only and it was good but hipfires felt awful, I've begun to naturally "reset" with gyro on
I find I prefer to have the gyro on ONLY to help aiming. I don't want it on when I'm just panning a camera or looking around. So what I do for the average shooter, where right trigger is to shoot and left trigger is to aim, is have the gryo activate when I soft pull the right trigger (also bind shoot to full pull) and have a mode shift on the gryo where soft pulling the left trigger turns the gryo to always on. So basically soft pulling either trigger will activate the gryo and it works just as good if the gyro was on right touch pad. Maybe you should give this a shot. Also Wolfenstein 2 works amazing with the controller (Seamless Gamepad + Mouse Function) Highly recommend it!
I started using a Steam controller first so I was always used to right pad touch for gyro and am a bit annoyed that gyro is always on by default when setting up profiles for DS4 I’m trying to get into flick stick maybe then gyro always on might make more sense for me
Gyro always on always seemed too unwieldy to me, like it'd be a constant nuisance. I always liked gyro on right pad touch, so you can do a low friction right pad swipe, then click to stop the spin and have gyro at the ready with that click.
I'm the same way with mine, I've never understood why so many people recommend having gyro always on. I do right pad touch and whatever trigger I'm using to aim down sights as well (so I don't have to touch the pad while I'm trying to aim at something very distant or very small, where touching the pad might shift the aim just enough to miss due to the contact between my thumb and pad).
Lately I been having a love hate relation ship with the controller. I love it and want the perfect control. I play a lot of L4D 2. The game is fast paced. I have not found that sweet spot yet. Either the aiming is to fast and sensitive or it is to slow. With the controller my aim percent is around 25 - 30%. By the way good video. There is much more then just gyro controller. The button customization is great. Such ad using the hip fire exclusive, soft pull to fire and slap the trigger all the way down to reload.
for me the only reason i really want a steam controller is to be able to use the gyro only when you touch the trackpad/touchpad (idk), since i want to play csgo with a ps4 controller it's annoying to reset the hand to confortable position and still aim at the right spot
Have you never set "Gyro Button Behavior - Turns Gyro" to Off? Why would you use the touchpad that way to re-center? Set "Gyro Enable Button" to Right Pad Touch and set "Gyro Button Behavior - Turns Gyro" to Off. That way, the gyro is always on except while the right pad is touched. It might not be to your liking still but changing that setting would solve the main problems you mentioned in this video.
That's an option but I disagree that it would solve the problem completely since using that method you couldn't use trackpad and gyro at the same time.
Simple solution for me. Gyro on by right pad touch. Never had an issue with it. Don’t have to think of pressing a button never had issue throwing my aim off cause I moved.
I accidentally press right pad when I have it set to touch for gyro. For me to reset I just keep the controller still on my lap and use touch pad to center.
Hi , how do I need to setup gyro for game like Test Drive Unlimited to look around with gyro , also I have problem wih sensivity of analog stick I want to be responsive optimally to have more control it's always too much or too less and I have to always correct it when driving , with consoles there is no problem because sensivity is always well tuned I have linear setting and I didn't touch sesnivity
I don't have that so I'm not sure but you should just bind the camera functions to gyro and then decide if you want it always on or with a touch on a pad to activate. Gyro is the little icon under the middle of the controller in the configurator.
+Cynical I usually keep the settings as default in the game and adjust on the profile end. That's mainly for sharing the configuration so the player doesn't have to tweak in game settings.
Gotta agree and disagree. For gyro yeah always on doesn't help anybody, so having it somewhere to trigger makes gyro so helpful when not using it for in-game. as for trackpad... I rather have it go only left and right really. When it comes to main menu or pause menu I rather use the stick for it. So I tend to let the game know it has to be a gamepad. If not I'll just have to set it up to mouse somewhere (or better having auto mouse switch mode when mouse pointer is on screen or not)
I actually might try to ween myself off the analog stick (for movement and heavily used functions in games). I've been thinking about it. The stick is always the first thing to wear out on a controller.
True, in those cases I try to be careful. Most of the time when I know I'm going to be a bit more crazy on action games I use my other controllers such as my PS4 or Switch controller plus. Other then that, like I said I try to be careful with my Steam controller I don't even like pressing down the stick because I'm worried it might break it. Thank goodness for left and right grips am I right?
I just sit on the beach. Seriously though, obviously for these types of vids the game is secondary and the focus is the tutorial subject. I've played through Crysis 1 with my current configuration. My channel kind of bops back and forth between gameplay and tutorials.
I was actually wondering if i should buy it,with all the bad reviews the steam controller looked like garbage, but after i went on your channel i saw it s potential and the actual way it s supposed to be used, keep it up
Oh, don't let bad reviews fool you. Most of them are by folks who never really gave it a chance. It's... unwieldy at first and took me probably a good solid week of playing before it started to click. It's by far the most accurate and adaptable controller out there though once you get used to it.
If you go and play splatoon 2 on switch the gyro among works fine most of the time and i just wish you could correct it with the joystick instead of having to push y and having it just center the camera where I don't want it but on steam the gyro never quite works right so I don't use it at all
I've been pulling my non existent hair our for nearly two weeks trying to figure out why my player rolls continuously when in prone position. It's all thanks to your binding Q and E to the gyro that caused it. Nearly threw the steam controller in the sea. Hahahahahah Thanks.
