    Had my Steam Controller over a year now and not bothered with it. I had an accident which meant i couldn't use kb/m so dug out the controller which i could use but had no idea how to set it up. I loved your guide and am fiddling with it now to play the Elder Scrolls online. Without video's like this one i wouldn't be able to play my favourite game. I know you recorded this a while ago but would just like to say Thanks

    I've recently picked up Battlefield 1 so my wife could watch the campaign mode. One of her degrees are in history and she studied WWI and WWII extensively. I rarely game with PC on FPS's because I would much rather play on my tv with a controller so online play means instant death. I also have been spoiled by games with alternative control schemes such as IR + nunchuck (Medal of Honor: Heroes 2) or gyro controls (Splatoon) and have really wanted to get a Steam Controller based on your videos using gyro control configurations.
    Well...after watching this I'm going to pick one up today! Valve really oughta pay you. Thanks!

    I bought a Steam controller day one and was excited to get it but then never really messed with it and ended up switching over to my DS4 controller when the custom support was added to Steam. I did like the comfortable feel to the Steam controller though.
    I've been telling myself I need to dig into the controller setting and functionality more so decided to look up some videos on what the controller offers and what some of the stuff does as I didn't really understand a lot of it. This is how I came across your videos and man am I glad. I did realize the amount of stuff you could do. I plan on getting more acquainted with it now and hope to build a lot of different setups for myself across my many games.

    19:00 That issue sounds like the effect of a bad deadzone implementation.
    They're probably applying a deadzone to each axis independently instead of making a vector with the raw input and applying a deadzone to the vector length.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's odd and frustrating. People have wondered why I don't use analog infantry movement in Arma, that's why. It consistently fails on diagonal movement.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, depending on the game it can be a bit cumbersome. Something like Battlefield 1 or Titanfall 2 are very easy because you really just use controller scheme with mouse and gyro mouse aiming. Something like Squad or other games like Space Engineers take a lot of thought and testing.

    Great tutorial. Very helpful. On BF1 , ive cracked the problem of Origin overlay enabled while using SC,thanks to a helpful SC community member who's name eludes me just now. Basically, you have to run with the K & M WASD template , dashboard profile disabled, with no analog xbox style controls so the game thinks you're only on K & M. The only snag is i have to quit BF1 each time i want to change the SC profile. I'm told GloSC can get around that, but i haven't had much luck so far,maybe I'm stuffing something up along the way.
    Anyway, keep up the great work, Egg!

    A little tip for you guys. Put your desktop configuration on "controller" so whenever you launch a game without adding it to the steam library, it will always be set as a controller instead of a keyboard...

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That actually doesn't work for me on Windows 10. I think it's ever since MS messed with Xinput driver for Xbox One integration. That's why I did that video on GloSC recently. Using that utility is the only way I can get controller input on desktop.

      I got it working (on a PS4 controller) by loading the Gamepad preset. Changing any of the bindings will delete the binding immediately, by the way, because for some reason we aren't allowed to bind to Xinput controls on the desktop.

  • @Maceyee1
    @Maceyee1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some games let you tell it that input will be Xinput and not Directinput in settings (PES2017). This can change unresponsive controllers as at 3:00;00

    I'm actually really hyped for my steam controller now. That's saying alot because I don't even like playing with controllers. Thank you for this video. I've been using a lot of your tips but using it towards a PS4 controller. I've been successful in everything except i can't find a way to "lean" with a PS4 controller. Using the Left Trigger (Aim) with the press of the Dpads to slant to either side; kind of like a Rainbow Six Style. Been trying to set it up primarily for Escape from Tarkov. I've been dominating; just need that lean for aiming....

    if you guys want good practice with aiming using the steam controller, download paladins and spend some time on the shooting range trying out different characters from super accurate crossbows to heavier weaponry, it's what i did and it became muscle memory easily, now using the controller is like second nature

  • @CortMarshal
    @CortMarshal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    problems with analog movement diagonally can be because of the deadzone setting on the joystick move in the Steam Configuration. Deadzone style in additional options CANNOT be set to circle or diagonal gets weird. Has to be cross or square, even if the deadzone size is turned all the way down. It's a bug with the Steam configurator

    • @CortMarshal
      @CortMarshal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also analog steering can be done with the movement setting analog emulation, where it sets it to tap the corresponding buttons WASD or whatever for better in between movements

    Thanks for the tutorial! I'm new to the steam controller and still feel i have a long way to go to tweak controls for my BF1 play with some good gyro control. I have felt far to limited in most other controllers.
    I definitely have to start using action sets as I would rather different layouts depending if i'm on foot or in vehicle

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In BF1 I really only added mouse and gyro mouse to a controller template. The game already has good controller support and it'll know to use triggers for gas in cars and motorcycles on its own so I haven't felt the need for action sets.

    Could I ask you to elaborate a bit more on why you like to use smoothing? And also, what's your preference on "in-game" sensitivity and steam controller sensitivity, to reduce "camera jitter" and get a better overall consistent aim?

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Smoothing is what can really help with the jitter. That's mainly why I suggest it. I don't crank it up as high as I used to because a steam update changed how it feels. Cranked all the way up feels sluggish now. I usually apply mouse smoothing in game settings now. It's definitely a preference thing but it's also important to remember that we aren't using an actual mouse, so some of those mouse things that people loathe like smoothing and acceleration can benefit a gyro and trackpad.

      Old comment, but this would be difficult regardless. This is because every Paladin's champion has a different play style/loadout/moveset; meaning you'd have to optimize a unique profile for each one.
      Profiles are easier for games where you play a set character or class.

      If it's normally a toggle in the game (like in Arma) you'd want to use Start and Release Press Activators. Start Press Right Mouse and Release Press Right Mouse. That converts a toggle into a hold. You can also do the reverse and turn a hold action into a toggle if you wanted using that method.

    I'm trying to use my steam controller in dying light which works good but I'm having problems picking locks it's the same technique as in fallout games it uses two tumbsticks and the right touch pad just not doing it for me any tips on what I could try?
    Thanks Michael

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For that I usually do a modeshift to turn the trackpad to joystick move with large outer deadzone. Joystick move will SUCK for camera but it'll feel like a joystick for twin stick shooters and mechanics like lockpicking. It's up to you which button you'd want to hold for the modeshift. It's an option in the Right Trackpad settings.

      +CatsCaughtVlogs mouse and keyboard will work. It should also have decent controller support built in.

      Sorry, I don't own it. I've lost count of how often I've been asked (not being snippy, its just amusing at this point). People REALLY want a profile from me. I'm humbled but yeah, I don't have it and it doesn't appeal to me. You should be able to make a decent profile following tips on my channel, it doesn't seem like a super complicated game for controls.

      When you are comfortable with it, just as good as a mouse player. It's VERY accurate and responsive. Plus, with vehicles and helicopters, you'll be BETTER because you'll have the bonus of analog rudders and steering as opposed to digital 100% keyboard inputs.

    Another great video. Steam should give you some money. You sold me on the Steam controller in another video earlier today. The one for Arma 3. Was tired of battling with Xpadder / Antimicro. Thanks again. Also, why do your pads look different? Are those stickers, or is your controller a different model?

    • @RambleCan

      They are vinyl stickers to protect and add texture to the pads; Touch Protects by Colored Controllers. If you search for those I also have 2 or 3 vids on them.

      I played through Dark Soul 3 with it. It works great as long as you give yourself some time to adjust. I've also moved away from using face buttons a lot, I'll put light and heavy attacks on soft / full pull of triggers and put dpad selections as a modeshift click on the right pad so you never have to remove your thumbs from movement and camera trackpads (gives you more control).

    I use to only use Xbox 360 controller.
    I buyed a steam controller to play Co-Op YOU Cant most games allouw you, cos it sees the steam controller as a keyboard when your on 360 controller. So thats a no go. I dident use it that mutch ant that it sucked a bit it was ok...
    now my xbox360 controller broke so i switched to the steam controller and within a week of only using it i love it now. I have big hands, so on xbox and PS controllers i have a weard grip Right hand grips 2 fingers on bumpers,
    Left hand 1 fingers on bumpers.
    On the steam controller cos its bigger my hands and fingers are automatically on all 3 bumpers with 3 fingers
    so in practices i get 3 extra buttons and thats Very handy
    So i'm converted Now i hope there wont be any loos battory cables like on xbox controlles

    Nice to see such a gift, thank you. Love it, this is everything i ever wanted and much more, great little tips to improve my existing setup. How is your experience with assymetric XY sensitivity? It makes wonders for me during those kind of games, because i mostly need good horizontal movement and only minor correction of vertical one. Merry Christmas!
    P.S. Is there any way how i could assign XY coordinations single click to one button on SC? For some old school games, that are mostly controlled using mouse it would really help. (example Legend of Grimrock) To make myself more clear: as if i would like for X to move my mouse for split a second to the right corner and click X to close my browser.

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't fiddled too much with asymetric bindings aside from limiting to X for gyro steering. I don't usually overcorrect too much on the Y so I just leave it as is. On second part, YES, you can with Mouse Region. It's a little confusing to implement but I think if you played around with it you could get it to do what you are describing.

    My steam controller is on its way and it will be my first controller i will use i hope it will do great job but i want to know what the best way to enable gyro on it. Can this touchpad click? I thought it would be a good place to enable gyro functionality from there. Will be glad if you guys tell me your button you map your gyro :D

    • @RambleCan
      @RambleCan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could use click and have click go to an action set / layer where gyro is always on. It would essentially be a gyro toggle. I personally put gyro on with right touch pad touch. Then I also put it as always on with left trigger soft pull. I don't usually put it as always on because I like to "re-center" my controller. When it's always on it can feel off if you want to realign how you are holding it. Just get to a quiet area in a game and fiddle around with a bunch of different settings to find what you prefer.

    My personal recommendation for how to use a steam controller for fps games. 1) put down the controller. 2) start using a keyboard and mouse.
    The controller is good for many other genres like platformers, racing games and more.
