    Would you ever consider making another one of these? They're IMMENSELY helpful and a great resource for not only replicating these sounds but better understanding this instrument and having a good starting point for similar patches I want to make. I'm particularly curious about the bassy synth in The Butcher that you used in your cover. Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor is another one with a great, specific synth sound I'd love to see you tackle. In any case, keep up the great work, love your vids.

    Just made the closest possible patch to Staircase on my Prophet 5 (it's got a lot less features so I had to cut certain things)... sounded absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for this, I have a hard time dialing in Radiohead synth sounds at times because they can be pretty wild, and awash with delay, making it hard to pinpoint what's happening. You've got a great ear! Thanks again, I can finally play a lot of these songs thanks to your videos. :)

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Juan Aldahondo they should all be just as possible on the 8 voice! The extra voices mostly help with playing it piano style with extra notes in the chord or using a sustain pedal. But most of Thom’s chording is fairly sparse - even an old-school 5 voice like the original Prophet would probably still work!

    Great sounding stuff.
    Have you dissecting the lead sound from 'Ill Wind' I've been trying to figure out how they are getting that tone. it sounds like it could be a self oscillating filter but not sure it sounds almost as though in a different tuning also.

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No problem! Do you mean more playing techniques or sound techniques?
      For playing like Thom, in that era and beyond: I'd say use a lot of split voicings (putting root notes in the left hand and then say the major or minor third an octave above in the right hand). Learn some basic modes and scales (for example, Phrygian is a big one for Everything In Its Right Place or Pyramid Song).
      For sound techniques: As seen in this video, focus on simple sounds with even just one saw or pulse wave oscillator, and add complexity by introducing pitch vibrato, or modulate the pitch or filter cutoff with white noise. Learn how to work with Envelopes to get the right punchiness or dreaminess out of the sound.

    • @JoeEdelmann3

      Nick Badamo it should! The voices just relate to the degree of polyphony you have (how many notes you can stack at once). Most of the chords Thom uses are fairly sparse (if you’ve seen my other video), so 8 should be more than enough, otherwise the 8 voice and 16 voice Rev2 are identical under the hood.

Obviously, every synth has a slightly different voice because of its unique oscillators and more importantly it’s filter. For Identikit, there’s not too much filtering though at least, so it’s probably possible to get a broadly similar sound. The key is the LFO vibrato and long release time.

      @@JoeEdelmann3 ok thanks for the advice! I just haven’t heard sounds like that from any of the demos I’ve watched and was afraid it couldn’t make sounds like that or staircase, you know just that super fuzzy spacey sound which I have no idea what makes it that way all I know is that I love it and don’t wanna buy the synth and it not be able to do it at all but I doubt that’s the case.

      Hello. The Moog Grandmother is a monophonic semi-modular synth. Only plays one note at a time (maybe 2?). Great for leads, bass tones, and like blips and bleeps, but maybe not the best choice if you're looking for something to play more pad-like tones like Identikit and Staircase, shown here. It seems you might prefer a polysynth.

      @@brianmcleod3783 thanks for the info! I had no idea, I couldn’t figure out why the sounds from the moog demos vs demos of prophet rev2, notation summit etc. sounded so vastly different. If you don’t mind, are there any polysynths you’d recommend?

    • @brianmcleod3783

      @Benjamin Devlin Honestly I'm pretty fresh on this journey myself! I have a Korg Minilogue XD, which I dig, and I think it's a great synth to start on, but I'm already on the hunt for something else even though I'll keep it for fun. It does a lot, but only has 4 notes of polyphony, which I've found a bit limiting. So I'm also looking for a good analog polysynth too. Ideally I would love to get a Prophet 5 or 6, or an OB6, but I just can't justify the price quite yet. If you have a midi controller keyboard, there are some great soft synths out there that will at least get you close to the sounds you're seeking, and will allow you to tweak the parameters like in this video. Some free ones like Surge (open source synth) are seriously awesome and have some great presets too.
      So for example, in the meantime while I'm looking around for my next hardware synth, I'm buying a good midi interface and the U-He Repro plugin pack which is supposed to be the best Pro-One /Prophet 5 emulator out there.
      Here's a video where they A/B a real one with the plugin. Tough to tell the difference: th-cam.com/video/uFA_B6pP9AA/w-d-xo.html
      Ha, I maybe just made things more confusing for you? The r/synthesizer subreddit is great for info too. Fair warning: this is a pretty deep, dark hole. I've already spent too many hours of my life on this, but I think it's super fun, so...
      Good luck!

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cathal Roper depends on your style of playing, but I don’t think you’ll have an issue with 8. 16 is probably more voices than you’ll ever need (there are only 10 fingers after all...) but where it really helps is in stacked (bi-timbral) sounds or for playing “piano style” with a sustain pedal (so you don’t run out of voices as fast). All the best polys of the 80s (Prophet 5, Oberheim, Juno etc) had 6 or fewer and are still excellent, or that limitation led to more interesting chord voicings. Oh yeah, also if you decide later you can always get the expander card to add the additional 8 voices!

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Roger Torrent both the 16 and 8 voices should behave identically (sonically)! The only difference is in your polyphony limitations (number of notes you can play at once, for single layer, or stacked sounds divided by 2). Most of the actual parts Thom plays are wide chord voicings that don’t push the limit of 8 voice polyphony.

      Joe Edelmann sorry to bother you again. Do you think this synth (REV2) is a best buy, in order to recreat sounds that range okcomputer till now radiohead era? Is it worth it? What other synths do you recommend me? I hope i explain myself, sorry for my rusty english...

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Roger Torrent the REV2 is a fantastic synth, with a wide range of possible sounds and built off of a strong legacy by a great company. I definitely recommend it in general because it’s a beautiful polysynth with a lot of functionality. In terms of Radiohead specifically, they’ve used a lot of different synth sounds if you go all the way back to OKC (Korg Prophecy, Mellotron which is actually a tape sampler, Crumar Strings, Novation Bass Station, etc.) and really only actually started using the Prophet ‘08 for the King of Limbs/AMSP era (but used the vintage Prophet V for Kid A). As I show in these videos, you can still get close to the sounds of other synths (except maybe a mellotron Bc it’s not a synth) with the rev2. So it depends on what you’re going for exactly!

    • @JoeEdelmann3

      @christdolphin69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JoeEdelmann3 have you done a lot of stacked layer presets? a lot of people say that a big strong point of the rev2 is stacking two presets to make one huge sound, therefore getting the 16 voice would leave you with 8 voices per timbre/layer i think. i do like your answer though, since i just got my 8 voice but i hope to get the expansion card for additional voices down the road. i have noticed that some of the presets i like so far are stacked, and leave me with 4 voices only

    • @JoeEdelmann3
      @JoeEdelmann3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@christdolphin69 I’ve done a few stacked patches, yes, and they are pretty useful! So, yes, that is an advantage of the 16 voice like you said. But still, the sound of even one layer can get pretty massive between the two oscillators, sub oscillator and effects. And like you said, can always upgrade later!
