I accidentally discovered the LFO per voice when I first got mine, it left me scratching my head for a while. You can make the Rev2 do some very cool semi-random music generation with sample and hold. I was very happy because it was playing me a song it made up all by itself.
@@mrcgeraldes I'm not sure if it's exactly what this guy is talking about, but I found you could do some interesting things by having an LFO set to noise and then routing that to the VCA. You'll end up hearing the last notes you played (the VCOs hold the last notes that they played but you can't hear them because the envelope is closed), but since each voice has it's own LFO, all the envelopes for each voice will all be at different values. The result of this is some nice little generative music.

such a well done review! and yes, I had an idea of what it feels like to own it. thorough, but not too long. I actually prefer the sound of the Rev2 to the Prophet 6. After I heard about the Prophet 5 Rev 4 I thought about to implementing the Vintage behaviour to the rev 2. the only thing archieving that is the slope AND velocity with small amounts to modulate the times of the Envelopes of the filter and amp. Because the vintage knob does this. Is velocity in the mod matrix polyphonic? (Like for the amps and filters) so you can modulate the envelopes attack and decay in small steps. Per voice. Because every stroke of a key is a little different from another, so the envelope times can diverge.
I'm looking to be sure of my choice, my Rev 2 / 16 is on its road and will come in a few days... I can't wait to play with it. just isn't as punchy as the analog controller on the Prophet 5/10 or 6 even.. I don't see a solution to that sadly. and otherwise I'd rush out and get it.
Correction, it’s not knob per function. LFO section is shared by all LFOs and since the knobs are not infinite and without “previous” indicator it’s a big weakness as they’re essentially reset every time you change one and want to come back to slightly tweak the other. Another reviewer mentioned that after loading a preset there’s also no “previous” values displayed for any knobs at all and that Prophet 6 had that. I think they should have either went with infinite encoders for LFOs or just placed a set of dedicated knobs for each. As it is, you can’t slightly tweak them and have to start from scratch every time you switch between them. DeepMind is much better thought out in this regard, and upon loading new preset shows the actual values of each fader so you can move it to match position. DeepMind is also not knob-per-function but the sharing of faders is happening between the 3 Envelopes. Since the “previous” values are available and you can even see the actual Envelope shapes in the display it’s easier to navigate. Ultimately, imho, both are stingy in not providing dedicated knobs for everything. But at least making the shared knobs infinite would be a sufficient compromise, since the surface of these synths is just digital controllers anyway. Rev2 being multi-timbral, it should have been made COMPLETELY with infinite knobs with values. Imagine switching between layers and slightly tweaking individual knobs! What’s the point in having knobs that don’t correspond to the actual values? Synthesizers were invented by people trying to break away from “tradition”, but now they are held back technologically by aesthetics of those (at the time) revolutionary designs.

The only thing that seems to be missing is what your overall evaluation of the Rev2 is: Do you like the way it sounds & what it's like to program? I own one and I love it. It sounds beautiful & programming it is very intuitive. I also think it's really good way to start to understand modular synthesis, because of the amount of modulation options it has.
I tend not to mention whether I like a synth in reviews because I think that's up to viewers to judge, not for me to tell them, since we're all hearing the same thing. Plus my opinions change...
What a Beautifully made video thank you. I really had a hard time choosing between the DS rev2 and the korg prologue. The Sequencer is what made me go with the Rev2 in the end, and also, it is much easier and faster to assign different parameters than the Korg..I find. And the fact that soon, you will able to upgrade from 8 to 16 voices for not expensive at all is a +
"Yes! Just got to get me a Peak...." You and me both. :) Your videos in particular, though, are extremely useful and informative. Even when I'm not interested in the device you're covering, I still enjoy it and end up learning something helpful. You have a knack for uncovering the most interesting aspects of each device, the things other people typically don't notice or don't mention. A deeper look, or a different angle. Sometimes this gets me interested in things I had previously ignored, or vice-versa. So I look forward to all your videos. But especially about the Peak, since it's the synth I'm most interested in.
Rev2 vs Peak is a bit of an odd pairing though. On the one hand, an expensive premium brand with oldschool cred decided to make something slightly cheaper. On the other hand, a somewhat younger company which usually makes cheaper gear decided to make the best synth they could think up. They ended up hitting the same price point, but in different ways. The Rev2 has some interesting features, particularly in the interface and how it avoids menus. Being bi-timbral allows it to function as two semi-independent polysynths, if I understand correctly, or layer two sounds. OTOH, it seems like the Peak has a deeper and more versatile synthesis engine with higher precision and more modulation options, more performance-oriented controls, nicer core effects, and some interesting new ideas overall, but is monotimbral and a bit more prone to using menus.
This thing sounds A LOT like my Oberheim Matrix 1000. I have the 16 voice REV2 and treat it like my second higher voice count Matrix 1000 with knobs and effects. Cool synth.
I have a Matrix 6 and just compared them today... the Matrix is more alive I feel, and has more "warmth" to it. If the Rev2 would sound like the Matrix, with all that controls and the nice interface, that would be great I think!
@@timmbrockmann959 I have a Matrix 1000 (with an external controller for full control/editing of the synth) and am looking for a companion polysynth that would complement it. I was seriously considering the Rev2, but these two comments caught my attention. Do you feel that they cover similar territory, sonically?
@@bktimes2238 Hey! I somehow changed my opinion a bit about the Rev2 , and think it is a really great machine. I wouldn´t say that the cover the same territory. The Rev2 sounds more modern, which is good. I figured that the Matrix-6 was almost too vintage sounding, and it was bit hard to get modern sounds out of it.. but there´s different applications for both.
Fantastic review, thank you very much for the time and detail. Not at all too long, enjoyed very much watching it. You achieved your goal of getting a taste of what it's like to own it, and oh does it taste good!
Awesome video as always man! If possible you’ve made me want one of these even more!!! Haha! Informative, helpful and detailed. Keep up the great work dude!
Great work Loopop, love your format. I acquired a Rev2 8 voice keyboard a few months ago and am really enjoying it. The Keystep function in the sequencer is great for creating long evolving patterns.
An absolutely fanatstic review of this synth! I really enhoy these well made reviews, and it would be so cool if you made a video on the subsequent 37. It is kind of the monophonic synth in the same price range as the rev 2
I would love to see this in a comparison with the prophet-6 desktop and maybe the OB desktop. what is the actual difference between all of them are all of them VCO, are they all digital FX, and what use cases might it make sense to choose one over the other. The only thing I could tell so far is that OB has deeper lows and higher fuzz compared to the pro-6 desktop.
superb review mate. the rev2 is still on my list for this year. may i ask, how many sounds can i use in the sequencer? can i for example make a bassline and on top of that a pad and a third sequence with an arp? i see in your review a screenshot of the editor, that shows 6 tracks for the sequencer. this means i can sequence 6 different sounds in 6 tracks? second, is the software just like the sub37 software, where it remembers settings in cubase? so, if i work on a project and have the prophet with a pad in it, this same pad opens in the same channel when i close and open cubase? and to close; i can only use one instance of the prophet in cubase right? i cant have several midi tracks of the prophet in one project?
The synth has two identical synth engines which can be split layered or used as two independently controlled synths. Therefore you can ony sequence two different sounds at a time. That means that although you have six sequences running concurrently, you can only use two sounds at once.
I love my Rev2 and the big sounds, but a big fu.... is the incremental cutoff Filter. It is not the same smooth joy bringing Cutoff Filter like from the Moog Sub37. The Rev2 is not highly playable. It's my only device from DSI. Are the cutoff filters on the other devices better? What about the Prophet 6?
I come back to this video from time to time to remind myself what a deep synth I have in my hands. Seems Loopop learned more about the Rev.2 in a week than I have managed in over a year! Great vid. Hope it stays up for some time to come.

@@loopop OK, but usually you do a kind of round up of pros and cons, or something like that.
You’re right. This video was from before I started doing that
@@loopop OK, that explains it. It was a great review, anyway, but it seemed something was missing.
Very helpful - thanx a lot!! Very well done! Greetings from Vienna
What a Beautifully made video thank you. I really had a hard time choosing between the DS rev2 and the korg prologue. The Sequencer is what made me go with the Rev2 in the end, and also, it is much easier and faster to assign different parameters than the Korg..I find. And the fact that soon, you will able to upgrade from 8 to 16 voices for not expensive at all is a +
Will the Rev2 Expander kit drop in price soon?
I have no idea - ask them?
Looking forward to a Peak vs Rev2 video. :)
Yes! Just got to get me a Peak....
+1 .. should be interesting!
Waiting! :)
"Yes! Just got to get me a Peak...."
You and me both. :)
Your videos in particular, though, are extremely useful and informative.
@@timmbrockmann959 Thanks for the info! Definitely going to demo the Rev2 to see if it fits my needs.
just found out you can transpose a sequence by holding the record button while a sequence is playing
Fantastic review, thank you very much for the time and detail. Not at all too long, enjoyed very much watching it. You achieved your goal of getting a taste of what it's like to own it, and oh does it taste good!
Loopop…your the best!! 🤙🏼
Very good reviews man, thanks !
Joshua WILLIAMS thanks and indeed!
Thank you for pointing out the keystepfunction!
played one today and loved it.
I love the OB/X samples on my Elektron Analog 4 so definitely want a Prophet along with one of the new Jupiter Roland synths.
Samples???
An absolutely fanatstic review of this synth! I really enhoy these well made reviews, and it would be so cool if you made a video on the subsequent 37. It is kind of the monophonic synth in the same price range as the rev 2
felix madcatz thanks! It’s on my todo list... but the list is long... these manufacturers gotta stop making new ones
19:55 sounds so good
This video was so helpful im in debt with my bank now! What a beast of synth!
Still a fantastic synth
Is it still relevant? I'm hooked on the 16 voice but I have not yet bought it.
I think so; it has a lot of competition, but interesting mod and sequencer options, and a great sound regardless
Excellent and in depth video, thanks a lot!
Loved that "Heart and Soul" riff.
AFAIK, this wasn't the only time you've sneaked it into a review, right? 😉
Thanks yeah sometimes I use simple, easily recognizable tunes to show a point
The best music instrument !
superb review mate. the rev2 is still on my list for this year. may i ask, how many sounds can i use in the sequencer? can i for example make a bassline and on top of that a pad and a third sequence with an arp? i see in your review a screenshot of the editor, that shows 6 tracks for the sequencer. this means i can sequence 6 different sounds in 6 tracks?
second, is the software just like the sub37 software, where it remembers settings in cubase? so, if i work on a project and have the prophet with a pad in it, this same pad opens in the same channel when i close and open cubase?
and to close; i can only use one instance of the prophet in cubase right? i cant have several midi tracks of the prophet in one project?
The synth has two identical synth engines which can be split layered or used as two independently controlled synths. Therefore you can ony sequence two different sounds at a time. That means that although you have six sequences running concurrently, you can only use two sounds at once.
6:30 Good squelchy sounds. 7:30 Interesting sequence. 24:25 Unison.
Thank you for the first review I've seen that lets us hear this synth dry without twelve gallons of digital reverb halls enabled.
December Agents on the contrary i have a prophet 08 and it has no fx , i think they give the prophet a finishing toich.
8:20 is heaven
I love my Rev2 and the big sounds, but a big fu.... is the incremental cutoff Filter. It is not the same smooth joy bringing Cutoff Filter like from the Moog Sub37. The Rev2 is not highly playable. It's my only device from DSI. Are the cutoff filters on the other devices better? What about the Prophet 6?
Virus ti2 or Prophet REV2 Polyphonic 16?
Great stuff. Currently looking at this synth as my next one. If you could do a review of the OB6 that would be amazing.
what did you get in the end?
Very well done! Thanks fo this
