The main difference between the oxide and inks is the oxidation of the oxides when you wet it on paper. If you are not doing mixed media, you probably should use the inks. You can wet them as well but they do not oxidize. As far as being juicy, you stamp off on scrap paper first then stamp your project. They are new that’s why juicy. Tim has great video on the differences. Hope this helps.

To me The oxides give you a chalk paint effect. If you are wanting clear images when stamping try the archival permanent inks. I use ink refresher because I live in a very dry climate. For 3 in one decant into sugar bell bottles and you can thin it down (if needed) with alcohol 😊

If you are looking for a braver try to find a Speedball brand. It is much better than the Tim Holtz one. I replaced my Tim Holtz one twice then got the speedball one and it is much better.

Love all the tools and stuff you introduced here. Totally understand your feelings about the alphabet sizzix. You could abandon using them to punch fuzzy letters completely and instead use them to make dangles for journals. Colour them with alcohol inks, embossing powder etc, however you want, or with nail polish (much cheaper) and voila! you have some pretty dangles or charms.

New Subscriber..from Arkansas, USA. I used to have a good friend that was born in the Netherlands.
I found it funny that U brought up the make up! My supplies have been packed away for awhile and haven't found my inks yet, My Mom has some eye shadows...one case has like a dozen shadows, including..a BROWN & a BLACK for use as eyeliners + a creamy yellow that worked VERY Nicely for "aging" something that way too white. Plus she found a pack containing 5 Glitter shadows. I used a cheap small Paint brush, a make up brush I don't use, a couple of makeup sponges (a Firm 1 & a Soft 1)...1 of those cheap foam paint brushes, & of course the little sponge applicators in the eye shadows..(which U can purchase a small pkg of Extras for a round a $1.00. THEY ALL WORKED! A bottle of Elmer's Multi Purpose Glue..(which can be turned into Decoupage glue! NEVER understand people paying $10 for a jar or Modge Podge, when U can just pour some of the glue in a small jar..add just a LITTLE water, stir...And U HAVE IT! On. THE. CHEAP! Been doing that for years...NO PROBLEMS w/it.)
I really take it as a PERSONAL CHALLENGE, to see what I can find...NOT marketed AS "Craft" & see what I can do with it!

Margreth, try lightly rubbing the stamp with very fine sandpaper. Iod designs very expensive stamps etc and they recommend that gently sanding on their stamps. It makes them a little less sticky and they hold the ink better.

Sugar belle icing bottles are the best for fabritac/fabrifix/3in1 Beacon. The big bottle oozes to much and those little bottles are frustrating. Definitely sugar belle bottle will ale all the difference and you can get silicone caps for the icing bottles

Re the light colored Distress Oxides that don't show up: I use them for altering and distressing photographic images. Photos are often too dramatic or colorful or contrast-y to fit in well with other elements, so I alter them with a light color ink as a filter to knock them back a little so that they "sit down" on the page better. "Old Paper" is one of my favorites for this, but I also use Spun Sugar, Stormy Sky, etc.

  • @tlyria
    @tlyria ปีที่แล้ว +6

It is nice to hear I'm not the only one that prefers the original inks over the oxides. TO me it just looks like white gouache is added. When you talk ink pads you have water based such as the original distress inks, pigment like VersaFine, ink based pads like Archival, and Oil based like SazOn. You mentioned that your SazOn dried out quickly... The reason for this is usually that people throw out the inner see through plastic cover. They think that it is shipping material but it actually is there to protect the pad. This may or may not be your issue. If your pads are drying out there are some easy inexpensive fixes. For water based pads you can mist them with water and let sit for a minute. It will not bring back pads that are out of ink but is very useful for reviving ones that are just dry. For pigment pads glycerine you get from baking or pharmacies is very affordable an works miracles. only a couple drops let sit if it needs more you can ad 2 drops at a time but do not over use. Hope that helps.

I totally agree on the inks vs. oxide. I just commented that the difference is the same as gouache & watercolor. The inks penetrate the paper whereas the oxides tint it by stay on the surface and move around if you monkey with them giving an opaque gouache appearance (extrapolated from a Tim Holtz video I watched years ago).

On the Tim Holtz label dies, use a sponge and dab on the die, see if that helps. It make take a bit of fiddling. On the abc’s. Use tape to line them up and punch out tape them.. layer post-a-note sticky side up. Put paper you want to punch out of it the post a note, put die on top and put low tack take on top. It may, be easier to use..

    Tim Holtz Oxide vs. Ink:
The main differences are the transparency & penetration of paper (I learned from a Tim Holtz video years ago). This difference is like that of watercolor and gouache. Inks would be the watercolor and oxides are more opaque like gouache. The inks penetrate the paper whereas the oxide (yes, tints the paper) stays primarily on the surface and moves around said surface. This means inks are transparent and oxides are more opaque. You can still spray both with water to get a grungy look with techniques. But I always prefer inks which you must order to purchase. Only oxides are hanging on display in craft stores (in the Houston area). And my absolute favorite aside from Vintage Photo (so similar to Frayed Burlap) is Rusty Hinge 🤪--extra orangey!

For the label dies, they do take practice. My labels and tags don’t ever come out crisp and clean looking, but I’m learning to embrace the imperfection. Archival Ink and a soft rubber brayer (like Tim’s) are best. For stamping, I prime all of my stamps by rubbing a layer of black archival ink over them and letting it dry. They don’t look pretty anymore, but they stamp nice. I prefer the regular Versafine (like Versafine Onyx Black) to Versafine Clair for the exact reason you said. Like you, I am a bargain shopper and RARELY pay full price for anything. Fabulous video and congrats on a stellar first year! Sending hugs from Ky, USA

I agree with you on the circle punches - have them all and love them. If you would like to have a larger slot punch (the size of your little die), I have one that I found in an office supply shop, made for punching a slot in a plastic ID card. The slot is the perfect size for threading ribbon, and it’s such a heavy duty punch that it will easily punch through card stock.

You are so amazing Margreth. I am new to your You Tube channel and I love your videos. Thank you. I have a hint for you with the TH label dies. The brayer did not work well for me either. What DID work was using a pigment ink stamp pad. I put the die down on a flat surface (my desk) and gently tapped the ink pad on the die. Picking it up without touching the ink took a little practice. I used a pencil to slide it to edge of my desk and then just grabbed it. Have your paper already on die cut machine, place die ink side down and it worked very well for me. i would say 80% came out perfect. And the others were actually all usable. I was worried the pigment ink would smear- but it did not. The paper absorbed it. I used coffee died copy paper and card stock. I did try other inks, but Pigment Ink worked best.

The hole reinforcer die cut you have that you said looks like a bottle or a dobber can be used as a closure. You would probably need to use thick paper or glue a few together. Putting a brad in the hole part then you spin it up and down to hold something closed. (Such as a card glued in a journal)
    I hope that makes sense.

I would be able to get some digitals, but my printer is not accepting it has ink, so time for a new printer. I enjoyed this so much.

Art Glitter Glue is by far my favorite glue, second 3 in 1, third PVA, & matte medium gel. I have everything you have on your table.
I struggle with the We R hole punch/eyelet setter but I really struggle with it because I have arthritis in my hands.
Least favorite is Mod Podge but always have a small bottle on hand if needed.

Just wanted to say I think the dauber looking die in the hole reinforcer set looks like it may be for making one of the little closure tabs that twists around to hold a flap closed maybe. Also wanna say I love watching your videos! This has been a very rough year for me personally and watching your videos has really helped take mind off my troubles if only for a little while. I love your sense of humor!

RE: Ink, if you want to stamp neither the oxide or the the die ink is great. I love the intensity of the dye pads but if you want to dye textiles oxide is the best. The Versafine is WONDERFUL for stamping. Lol, the more you use them the less juicy they will be.

The label tag dies work with Ranger Archival ink. It’s the only ink I have found that works. You will love them with this ink.

Margareth, invest in a sizzix magnetic platform, to use with your dies, you place the die on the platform and then use them over and over until you make as many as you want. I put the die down cutting side up and then the paper, it works great. Hope it works for you.

Archival Brilliance Moonlight White is a lovely white ink. Good for stamping. (I love white on craft.) Picket Fence oxide, not so good, but fine for stenciling.

To get a slot that is just the right size use your small hole punch to punch two holes the right distance apart then use your craft knife to cut the slot in between. I do this to make the Tim Holtz style slot pockets too. Then you can make whatever size you need or whatever shape you want.

For the label dies from Tim Holtz, clean them with alcohol first. I did not have much luck with Distress inks, but if I used VersaFine ink with the Tim Holtz Brayer it works pretty good. You need to go over it several times with the ink and just view it to make sure you have good coverage before die cutting.

Use the StazOn for stamping on acetate. I like buying the oxides, and the inks in the minis. Hero arts and Lawnfawn have nice white pigment inks.

Distress “Oxides” is a fusion of pigment and dye ink, is opaque, and oxidizes with water. Distress “inks” are dye inks and are translucent. Neither Distress oxides or inks are great for stamping. They are best used for inking techniques. Love your channel. Happy New Year!

Margreth I just got the whale tale punch, love it. I have many of the same punches, dies that you have. I think the letter, number dies are a lot of work. A plate would of been better. You are right about art glitter glue being the best. Don’t leave the top off it for very long or it gunks up. I love this video. I also enjoyed your 2 Q,A videos, recommended it to my friend, she loved it. Usually you can’t go wrong with Tim holtz products, except the ones that have 25 or 30 pieces, they’re too Fiddly. Thanks for sharing.
