    I'm from North Walsham and we used to go to Happisburgh beach when we were kids...its really sad, such a pretty and historic village that often gets overlooked.

    The Fact that the coast is clay and sand suggests that a couple of thousands of years ago it used to be an estuary to the North Sea. Being Dutch I know that keeping the sea at bay is a constant struggle. Even a mere 90 metres is just a very conservative estimate. The Dutch coastline changed in some places by several kilometers in a relative short timeframe.

      I used to live in Norfolk and also lived on the broads ,,very similar to much of Holland ,I also used to visit happisburgh cliff ,and the pub,we used to have parties on the cliff by the ww2 defences I wonder if they are still there or fallen into the sea as yet

      I'm 78 and the Norfolk coast has been worn away to my knowledge since I was ,16. That means for 62 years successive governments have done nothing to improve coastal protection

    As a Norfolk born person, I try to keep up to date with what is going on there and this video Tim makes very upsetting news. I´ve seen how dire the situation really is and am deeply concerned. Thank you for bringing attention to this beautiful Norfolk village and sharing with all.

    Oh Tim - shame on you ! You didn't close the gate of that Church ! I do love the Norfolk Coast, but sadly nature will wipe it all away in time. The north Somerset Coast also suffers from erosion - along by Doniford, Watchet, Blue Anchor etc is all falling into the sea. Nature will ALWAYS win, and rightly so, in my opinion. Great video as always - thanks for taking us along. Take care 🙂

    I enjoyed this video very much, Tim.
    As a Norfolk man, born and bred, I am very familiar with Happisburgh and have visited it many times over the years.
    And despite being very aware of the coastal erosion here and across other parts of our Norfolk coast, updated footage never fails to make me really sad and upset when I'm reminded that this will one day soon - all be lost to the sea. 😫😢

    Hi Tim, Cheers from a hot and sunny Sydney. I really liked the tour around Happisburgh. So interesting. Such a lovely place and it's sad to learn what has been lost to the sea and what may yet be lost. Ironically, Wikipedia says the name Happisburgh means 'Hæp's fort or fortified place'. Loved the church and the lighthouse and I hate to think they may one day be gone. It is interesting to note the long history of the area. According to Wikipedia, 800,000 year old flint tools have been found on the beach as well as the oldest human footprints outside of Africa. Sadly they were washed into the sea soon after their discovery. Hoping they can find a way to stop any further erosion...

    So sad to see this video. We had a holiday at the caravan site by Happisburgh church in 2013. The caravans were already being removed from the edge of cliff then. It was very eerie.
    I explored the lighthouse area and beach area too. We rang the bells for the Sunday service which was an honour. The pub was good too for supper. It was a lovely village and we enjoyed our holiday very much. So glad we came.

    Love your videos, I have watched most of them but I am especially interested in this area of the coast as my family have had holiday properties at Seaview Estate in Bacton going back three generations since it was built. I’m 40 and in my lifetime, the erosion at Happisburgh has been frightening! There were so many more properties when I was a kid and gradually they are all disappearing into the sea. Thank you for all your great work, I also really enjoy your holiday park videos as I have been on many Butlins and Haven breaks!

    The layers of clay viewed from the Sandy beach are like an artist palette, with different shades. And the sounds of the ocean waves, gushing back and forth towards the old wooden sea defences, sound eerie Tim. Although, I suspect where the sea takes land, it replenishes it somewhere else, along Britain’s coastline. 🤔

    I first came to Happisburgh in the 90s staying in a holiday home there next to cart gap and remember walking by the tea room that was nearby and along the beach. After years I revisited in 2019 and was shocked to see the tea room and a strip of houses all gone. Scarily the lighthouse is getting closer to the edge and you can see it from the beach now when it used to be quite a way back when I last visited. We have to save it the village as it’s a very special unique place with history

    We go for holiday to Norfolk every year and love it! The poor people of this lovely town must feel horribly neglected - after the flood surges in the 1950s, which devastated nearby Sea Palling, the gov't spent 100s millions for sea defences to the coast which end halfway between Cart Gap and Happisburgh. The erosion goes from nothing to extreme where the barriers end - with all the money the politicians waste on issues which don't concern us, surely we can re- direct money to save these lovely parts of Britain?

    Hi Mr Walk with me Tim, a quick walkthrough Happisburgh and it was very interesting and picturesque. It's got so much worse since I first visited some 40 years or so ago. The church is a beautiful example. Any, and I mean ANY Government that allows a treasure like this simply to disappear should hang their heads in shame. I know the purse isn't bottomless BUT think, IF this is allowed to 'drop intothe sea', where is next? It is necessary for each Coastal County Administration to check, record, have a study made - one that doesn't take years - and costings done through the UK and new, stronger defences and groynes built to SAVE the UK before it really does become too prohibitive. If we have to pay so be it, and I am just a layman NOT a Millionaire. We ALL have to contribute as much as we can!

    Re the 8m on the road sign, it's now 3.4m as of June 2022. The beach itself is lovely but the Cliffs are unfortunately sand on top of clay and till. The rain perculates from the top and the winter waves take from the bottom. The brutal reality is that the sea will win here unfortunately. Did you know in the Domesday book, Happisburgh was well inland and a village called Whimpwell out to the north east? It's well gone now.

  • @demonhalo67
    @demonhalo67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The only way Happisburgh can be saved long term is large far-reaching and continuous concrete barriers built into the cliff, and that would be more expensive than just rehousing the residents. There is no way the council could justify such a spend out on a remote area.
    The retreat is obviously still happening either side of the town where there are no granite boulders, and would eventually start cutting inwards towards Happisburgh from different angles again in the future. Happisburgh is ultimately still living on borrowed time.

      I think it’s been worse since they did all the work at Sea Palling, unfortunately the sea just cuts in somewhere else.

    The erosion is so bad that this was not originally a seaside village; that was Whimpwell that is long gone.

    I went today September 2022. They have made a new path down to the beach from the car park. So weird walking left along the Norfolk coast path, where the roads and footpaths disappear over the edge. Found out it was the caravan park long since gone, but still on the photograph. Lovely village.

    • @saragreatorex-hp3lg
      @saragreatorex-hp3lg ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the caravan park has been moved into the centre of the village.

    Morning Tim, love the video, amazing to see the rate of erosion here, beautiful beaches though, I remember seeing the opposite in the isle of man with erosion deposits being washed up the other end of the island and making the beach so large that theres another light house on its beach because the old one is to far inland now . Love to see older pics Tim to compare if possible.

    Thank you for filming St Mary's magnificent church. This was featured in A Warning To The Curious one of the M R James adaptations in the BBC Christmas Ghost Stories of the 1970s. Rightly Grade 1 listed. This village must be saved. This is what a proper government should be spending money on.

    Holidayed there in the 60's in a prefab on Beach Road. Happy days playing on the huge wooden breakwater that is no longer there. The little emporium that sold all sorts of things and the duck pond. Pity it is disappearing.

    I used to go there as a kid in the 70s and there was another car park further out. I t would have been good to compare old photos or footage.

    I'm on Google Earth at the minute looking at photos of the place from 1999, 2006...yeah, I mean, they did try to slow it down with groynes and what looks like a sea wall of sorts, but it was never going to happen. The sea is cutting in low, dragging the soft clay from underneath as the rest crumbles after it - Happisburgh's number is well and truly up.
