    Did my wall using traditional sand cement, good tip re the adhesive to fix the beads down! The rockcote seems to give a really nice smooth finish, KRend always looks to be a lot more textured?

    • @millsfitness4742
      @millsfitness4742  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s fine, I used sand cement years ago and back in the uk, there’s different rockcote products to achieve certain finishers, the client wanted a smoother look so I went with the off white which the sand is a lot finer giving the desired look, yes because of how that product is finished with a scratcher float and it’s silicone based which is similar to our texture in Australia, our texture can be tinted so it doesn’t need to be painted and finished with a plastic float, very similar looking finish to the Krend 👍

    Awesome job mate, looks very clean. I've just finished building a retaining wall out of the same blocks used in your vid, it's going to be holding soil back one side so I'm waterproofing the back, rendering the front and topping with limestone slabs. Do you know if they're is a one coat render system like that in the UK? I was under the impression I'd have to put on a scratch coat and then a skim coat. Cheers in advance for any info 👍🏼

      Hey buddy how’s it going ? Thanks mate, there is a few products one I recall is pro rend that is a two coat system though, you’d apply base coat with mesh and scratch it then the next day apply top coat with a float finish, these products are designed to be a visible finish so if it’s just getting covered up there’s no point, just use sand cement and screed it to make sure it’s flat for your slab, if the brick work is good and the back of the slabs are even you should be able to stick straight to the block work, you can in Australia but the products may be different there, I’d just coat it in the morning with a base coat of sand cement give it a screed and scratch then apply a top coat in the afternoon with a float finish, I’ve done sand cement in one coat and never had a problem, just apply a bit of bond to the mix along with plasticiser. 👍

    Lovely work I'm from UK also do they do silicone thincoat in oz.
    Thats majority of my work in UK.
    I also spray apply the render considering a move??

    • @millsfitness4742
      @millsfitness4742  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes they do use a similar system just slightly different products and system to the uk, there’s still foam boards which you render and mesh and can apply a texture (finish) top coat which you finish with a plastic (pvc) float, they usually use it for gable ends and second story sections on the house, they don’t use it on every job though, iam from the uk also if your a good renderer it wouldn’t take you long to pick up the systems over here, things are different but the same if you get what I mean lol.
      I’ve also used the spray machines, it not worth it unless you have big flat walls to spray we’ve used them on houses and buy the time you’ve done all the taping up and prepped the machine it’s easier to get a few decent lads to just trowel it on, you don’t see them much over here though.

    If you don’t mind me asking, what is in your mix to make it that smooth? Is it just cement, sand and lime?

    • @millsfitness4742
      @millsfitness4742  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a pre blended render product called rockcote (based in Australia not uk product) it’s fine sand cement with bonding agents and additive’s already in the mix, just need to add water. 👍it’s one of the finer products which the customer requested, you can get heavier more course products made by the same company.

    Do you ever have any issues with the render cracking where you applied the adhesive? I only ask because I used that adhesive to put my beads on and left it for a few days to dry, but then unfortunately it rained and the adhesive absorbed all the water and went squishy & soft to the point where it was softer then when it came out of the tube. I have left it and it has hardened back up but I'm just a bit worried about rendering it in case it does this underneath the render and causes cracking later on.

    • @millsfitness4742
      @millsfitness4742  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually have, it depends what adhesive you use this old stuff I used to have was brilliant never cracked but unfortunately they stopped selling it so when I moved onto a different adhesive I had airline cracking around the beads and it became boxed, instead of ripping the beads of I applied neat bond over the beads and then rendered over the beads once I removed all the loose render and it never cracked, my advise is apply the beads with render beforehand or to save time and work use a small paint brush to apply bond over the plastic beads and then render. 👍

    I've built a wall just like that for the first time and was looking to use krend to finish it but I've been told you cant render both sides of a wall because of moisture and the render will just blow off in time. Any idea or tips bud

    • @millsfitness4742
      @millsfitness4742  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey mate, are you based in The uk? Iam in Australia and they don’t have k rend here, Every country has there own products and systems of doing things, in Australia usually a retaining wall being used as a flower bed or back filled with soil I assume that is what your doing as you mention there will be moisture against the wall, you waterproof the back of the wall to we’re the soil will be filled, then there is usually at least 200mm worth of exposed brick or block showing, that is the part you render right down to the soil line, gives the illusion the whole wall is Rendered, if you check out my other render video (learn how to render) that’s exactly what I’ve done there,
      U can also render over waterproofing with special render, before putting your standard block render on top of it, in Australia it’s called patch & prep, lots of different company’s make there own version, there is also a really good Dulux product called acra patch mix it 50/50 with Dulux render sticks to anything
      If the wall you want to render will not be exposed there is no need to render it as it will not be seen, just make sure you give it two coats of waterproofing that will stop the moisture from penetrating the wall just make sure the surface is clean and as dust free as possible👌
      If your just rendering the wall with no moisture I.e soil against it and it is just exposed you defiantly can render both sides I’ve never had problems were render blows of if the whole wall is Rendered, just make sure the wall is dry before applying.
      Hope that helped any other questions feel free to ask.

    I'm in the desert and making a 2 ft high retaining wall that is 8 inches thick, 30 ft long. Since it's the desert, would I need to do a irrigation behind wall? Barely rains here.

    • @millsfitness4742
      @millsfitness4742  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What context do you need irrigation for ? If your talking about needing water for rendering the wall and finishing it you don’t need a irrigation system for that you just need water for mixing and finishing it, if your having plants or vegetables behind the retaining wall and you need water for growing then possibly,

    • @smallnuts2
      @smallnuts2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@millsfitness4742 I meant a french drain system. Seems pointless in having one if you live in the desert.
      Yes it rains but not a lot.
      Oh one last question if you dont mind. How come some people put rocks down before concrete?
      Other just put concrete down on compact dirt.
      Is it the same reason depending on how much rain that area gets?

    • @millsfitness4742
      @millsfitness4742  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t bother then, you only need a drain in if your using it to divert water if there’s no house near by or it’s not a big hill side we’re water will run to the retaining wall I don’t see and issue not putting one in the ground will soak it up before becoming a problem. it’s hard to say without seeing the job or what your trying to accomplish with this retaining wall your putting in.
      Every country has there own systems of doing things as I’ve worked in both Australia and England, being from England we always put aggregate down and whacker plate it before concreting, Australia they put something called crusher dust down pretty much looks like powder but it works.
      If your putting a footing down you won’t need aggregate or anything for that, only when your doing a slab, dig at least 350-400mm deep that is plenty for a small 2ft retaining wall 👍
