Rendering with Tarmac One Coat Render

- In this video i am using Tarmac one coat render or Tarmac OCR to render the outside of my concrete planters.
I go through what i 'm doing and give a few tips at the end.

you could probably get away with normal car sponges but the sponge float worked really well with the renders - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

Up until now rendering is something I would never have considered having a go at but now I reckon its doable. Thanks for the clear video. Your top tips section is a great addition.

A quick update on my project: the garage wall.
For anyone else considering this product, I went with the Tarmac one coat render and it went well.
I stripped all the old render and started from scratch. The wall is quite big at 6 metres by 3 metres but I did it in two parts and whilst the finish was not perfect it was acceptable for a DIY’er. I didn’t have a problem with my mixing paddle and a Hikoki 720 watt SDS plus drill and I used metal beads held on with screws and washers.
Thanks again for making this video. I found the straight edge and flattening was the most important part. Just get it on, press it on hard to stick well and flatten it after. The sponge float finish was the way to go and apart from a rain storm I got a fairly good finish. I found 5-5.1 litres was best for the water quantity and worked from right to left on the wall as recommended by another TH-camr for even finish. I went through 10 bags at around 10-15mm thickness and I too found myself polishing at 01:30 in the morning!

Make sure you spray biocide on the wall before you render it or you could get plant and moss growing underneath it which will blow it off the wall

Good demo. I used the same product to render low garden walls. I had a couple of places where I only wanted to render the front side and leave the back without render. My solution was to put boards along the back (with beads along the front). This gave me a good, even finish along the top.
Thanks. I should have done something similar with the boards but in the end i just covered the top with some decking boards, i'm really happy with the look in all honesty but I will know what to do if i have to do it again
We live and learn! I’m a DIY’er and rendering is a lot harder than it looks.

That was a good effort Matt. I’ve got a garage wall to do next week and there’s old render undercoat still stuck on so I’m thinking clear as much as I can and give this product a go. I’m fairly handy as are you and your video gives me more confidence to have a go with this.

I’ve just used it to render an outhouse wall. Never rendered anything in my life, it’s pretty easy to use. I wish I’d have watched the top about mixing half the bag first though then adding the remainder!
I need to go over it and do another coat though I think. Left it too long before smoothing it over :/
@@Stuey1221 im sure itll be fine, it took ages to go off when i did mine maybe i mixed mune a little wetter. Hope the 2nd coat goes well.
@@MATTDOESSTUFF2020 I called Tarmac today and asked their thoughts on using a cement mixer to mix it. The Technical department emailed me back and said yes, a cement mixer is fine but don’t mix it for longer than 3 minutes per batch as it’ll add too much air to the product.
Cement mixer it is then, just waiting for a weather window now.

For rendering I always add lime it helps preventing cracking.
nice i'll add some next time. although 2 years in and its holding up well with no cracks
Hi with this render, can I check if there has been any cracking or peeling anywhere 2 years later? Also I have got red brick external wall - will this work and do I need to prep the surface before or just put on this one coat tarmac render ? Thanks

Matt, brilliant video which has given me the confidence to sort out a garden wall. The first video I could find anywhere of Tarmac OCR being used by a fellow DIY'er. Just out of interest, did you use all 4 bags for the project? Also, did you do anything to cover the visible beads later on or have you perhaps just left it and painted it over? What size beads did you use? How long did the actual rendering take you? Thanks once again - top man and easy to understand.

To answer your questions.
I used 3.5 bags in the end, I'd say coverage on the bag is pretty accurate at 10-15mm thick.
I am going to paint the planters at a later date so should cover the corner bead
I've updated the description with links to the beads. 10-12mm from screwfix. you can get deeper but these worked for me.
the actual rendering took about 2 hours (not including setting beads). I had to do 3 separate mixes, it would have been quicker to mix up a larger batch but i was limited by bucket size and mixer.

Can this be use on an outside concrete ground? I need to smooth out bumpy concrete but the exterior leveller I was looking at is too expensive per bag for me to afford. £30 a bag. This is significantly cheaper so can this be used instead? It's for a 3mX2m garden floor. I want to smooth it out as a small outside space to practice rollerskating moves. It's currently too stoney and very rough.
Im not sure to be honest. Its essentially a cement based render but not sure how it would hold up under footfall. Might be worth contacting the manufacturer
Just about to do this to a wall I've built, what size beading have you used 6/10?mm? Did you have a DPM on soil side and did you waterproof the wall before rendering? How has the wall faired since you built? Lots of questions...sprry
The beading is 10-12mm. The link to the beading is in the description of the video.
The walls have held up really well the render is still on and they still look fresh so im pleased so far!

Thanks conor. I didnt think ruling it off would be needed as they were such small areas and i was rendering between beads. It ended up pretty flat but a bit rough. Would you always rule off??

Im painting the whole lot so hopefully wont see them. I guess i could have tried to cover them more but im not unhappy with the way they look.

Do you think you would have better doing a thin scratch coat then 1 or 2 passes with the OCR? I really want to give this a go. Been told add a bit of SBR. Looks pretty good for been tarmac.
I only had a thickness of about 15mm of the OCR. i'm not sure if a scratch coat would have made a difference to times or not and i was keen to test out its one coat credentials. it does say on the back it can be built up over 2 coats.
As for SBR are you talking about adding that to the mix, if so i'm not sure, you might be better with an accelerator if you are worried about time.
I did consider putting some SBR on the blocks but i think thats more to regulate the drying times and i was getting conflicting info online so left it out.
I am really pleased with the finish though.
@@MATTDOESSTUFF2020 i only have a small ugly wall to cover up so i am very interested in seeing if the tarmac stuff is any good to learn on. I was told to make things easier sbr walls, add scratch coat then beads. Then mesh & topcoat. Im unsure if they meant for the likes of krend or webber. I’d like to do a scratch coat finish so maybe i’ll do the 2 coats do you think?
@@danmurphy7338 I dont think you need a scratch coat with this stuff but as you say you could lay your beads into it and then put on a top coat so might work well.
I think for a small wall its ideal stuff as you dont need to worry about getting the right concrete mix.
I think if i was to do it again id probably put some SBR on just to see if i saved time.

Hi there nice video looking to render on an old house contemplating fitting a bell cast drip bead to take any water away from the wall this would involve two coats any thoughts or tips ? Thanks

I dont think you would need two coats. Ive used what im calling stop beads but i think they do the same function (im not a pro) but i think as long as you can get them fixed to the wall you should be fine with one coat
I think in a normal scrstch coat situation you would set the stop bead into the first coat but with this youd need to fix it another way

@@dm7325 Yeah for sure, on the back it says for thicker applications you should build up in multiple coats.
I would actually recommend setting the beads in some of the render anyway rather than what i did with grab ad. So doing 2 coats would work. I think if you are doing 2 coats you would need to scratch the first to get a key for the second to stick to.
Just put your second coat on the next day mate .This ocr does not board up as good as sand and cement traditional render ,this stuff is used as a base for 1.5mm silicone finishes .

It was too soon ?
I had a grittyish finish, but i quite liked the look. if you wanted smooth I think you would have had to go over with another trowel. But as this is the one and only time I've used this i couldn't be sure.

Great video, How thick did you do the coat? Says minimum 16mm I think. Going to do my garden room bank holiday weekend (this weekend) bit nervous because it’s a big area and i thought the beading would be a guide but it only sticks out on the corners about 5 mm so will have to build up rest by eye.
I did about 10-20mm across the lot and if i did it again i would probably use a straight edge across the beads to guage the thickness.
@@MATTDOESSTUFF2020 that’s what I’ve just done on the front, used the poly float to soon and scratched it a bit but hopefully paint sorts that out haha. not sure when to sponge float it though.
I sponge floated when it was still wet, but when i prodded it with my finger it didnt make an imprint! If that helps!

Ive just applied this to a brick wall...how long to wait before floating? Its quite warm outside.
If mine comes out as good as urs, il be happy.
Id wait until your finger tips dont make a dent in the render but still feel damp to the touch. Not sure how long that will take but its a good indicator i think

A 25kg bag doesn’t go far!
@@MrPFurse I would put something on the wall, maybe some SBR as I think i'd be worried about the suction and it drying out too quickly. you might want to ask a pro though as i'm by no means a pro at this stuff.
i would say your always best buying sand and cement you more control on how strong you want how quick you need to it try etc and convenience products generally aint as good
yeah, I wanted to try it , mainly because i was being lazy and was hoping the one coat would save time! It did the job though and its still on 2 years later and hasn't cracked or broken. i think maybe i made it too wet which affected the drying time
For a first attempt it wasn't too bad
If you did it again you would do a better job

Please render your beads on stay away from edge of bead keep it clean then top coat finishes over and into beads job done

You're a fine specimen sir not rough at all. As long as you're happy with it that's the main thing. I'm a renderer. If anyone comments on it when the sun is shining on it just say its rustic!
