The one thing I find sad about this story is the part about the snakes and God had Moses make a bronze snake to heal them. All they had to do was simply LOOK at the snake and be healed. Some people died because they wouldn't do something as simple as look at a bronze snake. Even today, all people have to do is accept Jesus, ask Him to forgive them of their sins, and they are Saved. People come up with every excuse and justification to not do something simple like accept Jesus. It's just so sad.
But what does it mean to accept? I don’t need a specific answer. For every person, it may differ. Also, to repent and accept should mean to live according to his teachings. Which can be hard to do. No one does it perfectly. So are there degrees of acceptance? What about partial repentance? Self deception?
It’s not just forgiveness, when you repent you have to change, you no longer sin willingly anymore. People love their sin so much that they don’t want Jesus. Because they wanna feed their flesh instead of their spirit. Christian does not mean accepting Jesus as your savior and move on and sin after praying, it means to live Christ like and strive to be perfect
@adrian Lecesne There is no partial acceptance. Accepting Jesus's forgiveness washes you clean of all your sins, past, present, and future. No one can live a perfect life before or after accepting Jesus. Once you ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins and ask Him to send His Holy Spirit to be with you, you will find that you don't want to sin as you did before. But salvation is not based on works. It is the act of believing Jesus is God in human form, believing He lives a perfect life, died even though He did not deserve death to take your place, Rose again, asking Him to forgive your sins, and asking His spirit to dwell with you. This hit me hard: "God is faithful to His promises but will let His people walk away and face the consequences". There are promises God has given me that I still question and doubt even in this very moment. But I have the choice to either believe that He'll keep His word, or go my own way. I don't want to miss out. I've got to choose to believe Him, even when I don't see how it'll all come together.

I completely agree with you. I think the Bible Project has met one of the world’s biggest needs-not only meeting it, but excelling in that pursuit. To show that the ENTIRE Bible, Old Testament included, is one, unified story. That the mosaic law and the OT isn’t something we disregard, but that it is valuable as well and contributes great truth about the character of God that is not contradictory with the NT. Showing typologies, themes, and the true strength of how great a work the divinely-written Bible really is.
This story reminds me of the many times I was complaining about my life while God was blessing me without me knowing! It creates in us a grateful heart, and also a broken heart seeking for repentance.
Is that not the story of mankind and even God's people. Only a definitive turn to our Father's ways, with a faith in his power and the power of His spirit within us, can help us to keep covenant with Him, through the grace of Messiah as he has been faithful to keep it with us and even renew it, based on better promises through the blood of His son.
Because the all encompassing sin of REBELLION is in our DNA which we inherited from Adam and Eve. It will do battle with everyone of us till our last breath. We are only safe if we repeatedly choose to remain in Christ in continual surrender. Oh Lord help us is my plea.
reading the bible has always felt intimidating to me and I've often just flipped through to whatever page or book jumps out to me in that moment.. These videos have me feeling like a teenager again, staying up too late reading, telling myself I'll just read ONE more chapter because I am so pulled in by the story. There's another meta-symbol you left out (or will cover later). The story of Israel is a metaphor for the Christian life. We were in slavery (preconversion), God saved us from the power of Satan (Pharaoh), we were baptized and marked as God's people (Red Sea), we start out optimistic (Covenant at Mt Sinai), but we constantly rebel (Korah, snakes, etc), and make the journey tough on ourselves rather than trusting God (40 years). Life is not a cakewalk, it's a battle (Numbers). Satan opposes us and we struggle and battle, but through God we can have victory over our enemies (Joshua). Who are our enemies? "Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms". Driving out the Canaanites is a metaphor for our battle against sin and evil.
and when I say that it's a metaphor, in no way am I undermining the historicity of those events and battles. I'm simply underscoring God's sovereignty and ability to weave a lesson for us Christians into biblical history. It shows us that God knew what would happen from the beginning, and knew the plan of salvation and what our Christian lives would be like.
Super Cool 762 Positionally, in God's eyes we have the righteousness of Christ. He does not count our sin against us, as if I had never sinned. But we still fight to claim the promises of God for our lives, to drive out sin in our lives, which is the parallel that the book of Joshua gives us. Are you saying that true Christians never sin? The Bible says that "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." 1 John 1:8
I'm just amazed that Moses continuously supported the people despite their disobedience and ungratefulness. If it was me, I'd be like, "So be it, go back to Eygypt, eat dirt and be killed by soldiers."
Just in case anyone missed it. The arrangement of the camp actually forms a "cross". The eastern side has the most population of 180,000 which is the longer foot of the cross. While the western side has the least population of 100,000, thus the shorter end of the cross. The north and south camps are in identical population of 150,000 thus forming the two equal sides. So the shape is more of a traditional cross (✝) which is unlike the one showed in the video with symmetrical lengths (✚)

The first five books have been known to be very dry, but thank God for The Bible Project. Thank you for honoring God and allowing people like us to learn more about the Bible so that we can honor Him too. Q
If I'm correct, it actually looks even more like a cross than what is drawn. Yes, they were arranged that way, but due to the number of people in each tribe, the "bars" aren't all equally sized. If I remember correctly, two of the bars opposite to each other were the same length. One of the other two bars was longer than the rest, while the last one was shorter than the rest. Though keep in mind this comes second hand and I haven't checked this for myself quite yet.
That’s why we should stay rereading Gods word. It helps to go back to read these stories, so we know how to handle our situations now & how important it is to be obedient.

Second, I just finished Numbers 16, and I wish you guys could have put in that scene where Aaron stood between the people and the plague. What an awesome picture of Christ! Our high priest standing between us and our own DESERVED death! I pictured it it my mind, but I wish I had a drawing of that hang on my wall. I can just picture Aaron with his arm outstretched, a huge pile of the dead in front of him, and a great crowd of the rest of the people cowering behind him, praying that God will listen to the plea of our high priest and spare them.

This provides great knowledge about Numbers. I am currently doing the Bible in a year reading plan and this knowledge is very helpful as I continue reading.

3:39 - I never thought of that, nor heard anyone put it that way. Usually I hear preachers/teachers say that Moses didn't get to go into the promise land because he hit the rock when God told him to speak to the rock. But I suppose in a deeper sense, by not following God's will and following our own, we are essentially putting ourselves in God's place. So whether it was that Moses saying "must we bring out the water", or if it was him hitting the rock instead of speaking to it as God instructed, both acts are essentially him putting himself in God's place. Moses not only did it by action, but by his tongue.
I'm glad we found this channel, simplifies so many things but.. we still need to get to our Bibles.. especially now with a better understanding, we still need to read, study and meditate on the Word, for it is the Spirit of God, and He brings life.
ISAIAH 4 - NUMBERS “Then the Lord will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shinning of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering.” (Isaiah 4:5) WORDS BY: FATHER "Isn’t it interesting how Numbers 9:16 correlates with Isaiah 4:5? The two verses speak about My presence filling the tabernacle in the midst of the assemblies. This presence was the very covering over My people. It was not just a sign to the foreign nations that they belonged to Me, but a sign to the darkness in the spiritual realm. Do not be mistaken by thinking that Israel went out to war against nations alone. What possesses a nation to war against another is a spirit. Therefore, when Israel fought against nations they were dealing with spirits in the heavenly places; and the spirits knew I was with them because they carried My presence. This is the importance of staying close to Me and under My covering. The enemy shall know who you are and who is with you. This covering is the blessing of being in My will. The danger many Christians face is when they walk away from My covering like Korah did, and it is done more than people realise. Anything done independent from My will is a form of walking out of My covering. You open yourself up to darkness and the enemy no longer recognizes that you are protected by Me. He then has a right to attack you because you chose independence instead of life. Where is My blessing in doing your own thing without My consideration? Therefore, challenge yourself to stay in My will. Each time you want to do something consider this, “Am I in My Lord’s will?” or “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Then and only then will you experience My full covering along with My blessing."
Another great video! I don't find the bronze snake weird at all. I think it's to contrast the use/misuse of statues and idols. The 10 commandments don't say don't make statues but rather don't make statues and worship them as gods - it's a violation in that we put things (objects) before God. But the bronze snake is different. It is not made to be worshiped as a god but to remind us to worship God himself when we look at it, and it is made to remind us of God's promises to us and our desire to love and serve Him and only Him. Healing that comes from looking at it does not come from the statue itself but from God through the statue because by looking at it for healing, we are essentially telling God that we believe His promises to us and that we have faith.
I agree! In fact, I consider the bronze serpent a type of Christ, who in His mortal life dispensed true doctrine & judgement against the wicked but was eventually *lifted up* on the cross so that those who look to Him will be saved.
+Angela Hoffman it's definitely one of the figures of the Christ in the OT, and Jesus Himself made this connection in John 3:14. problem with these images is that even though they are not made to be worshipped, men is so wicked that he'll turn it into a religion and make rites out of everything... just like they did with the brass snake and even gave it a name, Nehushtan. it had to be destroyed (2 Kings 18:4). kinda reminds me of the signal of the cross used today as a superstitious amulet and many other so-called religious practices.
Only by watching these overviews i've come to learn the deep connection of Exodus to Levitucs and Levitcus to Numbers. God Bless you and your ministry.

Numbers is actually one of my favorite books to read, this video breaks it down perfectly. Is there a reason that you don't go into the talking donkey story in this video or your other one?
The talking donkey, the over abundance of quail, God burning folks up because of their numerous complaints 😂 it’s a lot they didn’t mention. This book is so slept on.
but they do talk about Balaam, who rode the talking donkey! the donkey wasnt the main event there! neither was the warrior angel in the road who was about to smite Balaam. it was about the blessing of Israel and God's protection of them behind the scenes.
Correction!!!! God got mad at Moses because he was supposed to talk to the rock not hit it with the rod. God said nothing about him putting himself in God's place that's what Jehovah Witnesses believe.

What I always find weird about the promised land is that the Israelites had to kill the other tribes to make it their own land. Why did they had to kill? When it is forbidden to murder? What is your look at this, I find it really hard. It makes God look not loving at all.

Good question. No one ever seems to talk about the Levites slaughtering other Hebrews at Sinai, or being swallowed up in turn for rebellion in numbers. Everyone is so fixated on the Gospel that they neglect the underlying narrative. I really like the Balak and Balaam story because we don’t hear enough about what the Other peoples thought and felt. I want to find a good resource on the Egyptians after Exodus, but it seems that they just didn’t write about it. Maybe it was a period of dynastic decline and instability, or an embarrassment, but to think that the formative event the making of the Hebrew people isn’t a ping on Egypt’s radar.

I can't wait to share this video with my upper elementary Sunday School class this morning. We're finishing up our "journey" through the book of Numbers.
What's amazing about this book is how it shows that through the transgressions of the Israelites and their judgment and forgiveness, God is informing us and them that they deserve punishment for their sins, but that God shows mercy to them and frees them from the punishment of their sins if they look up to him. It's the story of Jesus. We deserve punishment for our sins but God's mercy gives us a way out of the punishment we deserve, because Jesus took the punishment. All we have to do to have our mercy is believe in Christ. Believe in God. Praise God! Beautiful!
Just a couple of cool notes I've picked up that he didn't mention - 1 - The arrangement of the Israelite camp looked a little more like a cross. 2 - The bronze serpent was representative of Jesus becoming sin on the cross, that's why it was a serpent.

As a Muslim I find the contents of this book to be pretty interesting. How God's presence was at the very center of the 12 tribes. Now, God's presence is at the holy Kaaba - the center of pure monotheistic worship. Muslims from all around the world pray in that direction. And also the part about Israel carrying God's blessings - now, God's good pleasure and blessings is in His final messenger. This is why 'Muhammad' is the most honored name in the world. Now God's barakah is with the Quran and anyone who follows it.
As a Christian we are God's temple so we don't have to go to a stone to be in the presence of God because God lives in us and we can speak with him wherever and he speaks back to us ❤✝️

Also, interpreting Moses striking the rock twice as stealing God's glory is valid, but the reading I favor is that he messed up an intended foreshadowing of Christ - Jesus only needed to be struck (killed) once to save humanity, but by striking the rock twice Moses muddied that powerful imagery.
Love the Bible project but I have to highlight the most important part of the story. The bronze snake is a foreshadowing to Christ. The one who would become our sin on the cross. If you miss this in the book of numbers you miss the point. Remember that foreshadowings to Christ and even Jesus himself appear all over the Old Testament. I would even venture to say that all scripture points to Jesus. Don’t miss it

I just made the connection of the 10 bad scouts and the 2 faithful ones. When Isreal split into the Northern and Southern tribes before the Babylonian exile, the South comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. They were the only ones to survive past it due to the other 10 being conquered by the Assyrians. Man the Good Lord is subtle but effective ag foreshadowing.

This hit me hard: "God is faithful to His promises but will let His people walk away and face the consequences". There are promises God has given me that I still question and doubt even in this very moment. But I have the choice to either believe that He'll keep His word, or go my own way. I don't want to miss out. I've got to choose to believe Him, even when I don't see how it'll all come together.
Just because a person who is saved by believing is free from the penalty of sin(Hell), doesn’t mean they will escape earthly consequences.

I completely agree with you. I think the Bible Project has met one of the world’s biggest needs-not only meeting it, but excelling in that pursuit.
To show that the ENTIRE Bible, Old Testament included, is one, unified story. That the mosaic law and the OT isn’t something we disregard, but that it is valuable as well and contributes great truth about the character of God that is not contradictory with the NT. Showing typologies, themes, and the true strength of how great a work the divinely-written Bible really is.

This story reminds me of the many times I was complaining about my life while God was blessing me without me knowing! It creates in us a grateful heart, and also a broken heart seeking for repentance.
"where things go terribly wrong" seems to be the catch phrase in every video so far.
Is that not the story of mankind and even God's people. Only a definitive turn to our Father's ways, with a faith in his power and the power of His spirit within us, can help us to keep covenant with Him, through the grace of Messiah as he has been faithful to keep it with us and even renew it, based on better promises through the blood of His son.

reading the bible has always felt intimidating to me and I've often just flipped through to whatever page or book jumps out to me in that moment.. These videos have me feeling like a teenager again, staying up too late reading, telling myself I'll just read ONE more chapter because I am so pulled in by the story. Thank you to all who took part in creating this series, I'm EXCITED to follow along and learn more.

There's another meta-symbol you left out (or will cover later). The story of Israel is a metaphor for the Christian life. We were in slavery (preconversion), God saved us from the power of Satan (Pharaoh), we were baptized and marked as God's people (Red Sea), we start out optimistic (Covenant at Mt Sinai), but we constantly rebel (Korah, snakes, etc), and make the journey tough on ourselves rather than trusting God (40 years). Life is not a cakewalk, it's a battle (Numbers). Satan opposes us and we struggle and battle, but through God we can have victory over our enemies (Joshua). Who are our enemies? "Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms". Driving out the Canaanites is a metaphor for our battle against sin and evil.

and when I say that it's a metaphor, in no way am I undermining the historicity of those events and battles. I'm simply underscoring God's sovereignty and ability to weave a lesson for us Christians into biblical history. It shows us that God knew what would happen from the beginning, and knew the plan of salvation and what our Christian lives would be like.

But we still fight to claim the promises of God for our lives, to drive out sin in our lives, which is the parallel that the book of Joshua gives us. Are you saying that true Christians never sin? I'm just amazed that Moses continuously supported the people despite their disobedience and ungratefulness. If it was me, I'd be like, "So be it, go back to Eygypt, eat dirt and be killed by soldiers."

Just in case anyone missed it. The arrangement of the camp actually forms a "cross".
The eastern side has the most population of 180,000 which is the longer foot of the cross. While the western side has the least population of 100,000, thus the shorter end of the cross. The north and south camps are in identical population of 150,000 thus forming the two equal sides.
So the shape is more of a traditional cross (✝) which is unlike the one showed in the video with symmetrical lengths (✚)

I've been trying to read the entire Bible, starting from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and now Numbers. The first five books have been known to be very dry, but thank God for The Bible Project. I love how the camp looks like a cross
If I'm correct, it actually looks even more like a cross than what is drawn. Yes, they were arranged that way, but due to the number of people in each tribe, the "bars" aren't all equally sized. If I remember correctly, two of the bars opposite to each other were the same length. One of the other two bars was longer than the rest, while the last one was shorter than the rest.
Though keep in mind this comes second hand and I haven't checked this for myself quite yet.

Second, I just finished Numbers 16, and I wish you guys could have put in that scene where Aaron stood between the people and the plague. What an awesome picture of Christ! Our high priest standing between us and our own DESERVED death! I pictured it it my mind, but I wish I had a drawing of that hang on my wall. I can just picture Aaron with his arm outstretched, a huge pile of the dead in front of him, and a great crowd of the rest of the people cowering behind him, praying that God will listen to the plea of our high priest and spare them.

3:39 - I never thought of that, nor heard anyone put it that way.
Usually I hear preachers/teachers say that Moses didn't get to go into the promise land because he hit the rock when God told him to speak to the rock.
But I suppose in a deeper sense, by not following God's will and following our own, we are essentially putting ourselves in God's place. So whether it was that Moses saying "must we bring out the water", or if it was him hitting the rock instead of speaking to it as God instructed, both acts are essentially him putting himself in God's place.
Moses not only did it by action, but by his tongue.

"Isn’t it interesting how Numbers 9:16 correlates with Isaiah 4:5? The two verses speak about My presence filling the tabernacle in the midst of the assemblies. This presence was the very covering over My people. It was not just a sign to the foreign nations that they belonged to Me, but a sign to the darkness in the spiritual realm. Do not be mistaken by thinking that Israel went out to war against nations alone. What possesses a nation to war against another is a spirit. Therefore, when Israel fought against nations they were dealing with spirits in the heavenly places; and the spirits knew I was with them because they carried My presence. This is the importance of staying close to Me and under My covering. The enemy shall know who you are and who is with you. This covering is the blessing of being in My will.
The danger many Christians face is when they walk away from My covering like Korah did, and it is done more than people realise. Anything done independent from My will is a form of walking out of My covering. You open yourself up to darkness and the enemy no longer recognizes that you are protected by Me. He then has a right to attack you because you chose independence instead of life. Where is My blessing in doing your own thing without My consideration? Therefore, challenge yourself to stay in My will. Each time you want to do something consider this, “Am I in My Lord’s will?” or “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Then and only then will you experience My full covering along with My blessing."

Another great video! I don't find the bronze snake weird at all. I think it's to contrast the use/misuse of statues and idols. The 10 commandments don't say don't make statues but rather don't make statues and worship them as gods - it's a violation in that we put things (objects) before God. But the bronze snake is different. It is not made to be worshiped as a god but to remind us to worship God himself when we look at it, and it is made to remind us of God's promises to us and our desire to love and serve Him and only Him. Healing that comes from looking at it does not come from the statue itself but from God through the statue because by looking at it for healing, we are essentially telling God that we believe His promises to us and that we have faith.
I agree! In fact, I consider the bronze serpent a type of Christ, who in His mortal life dispensed true doctrine & judgement against the wicked but was eventually *lifted up* on the cross so that those who look to Him will be saved.
+Angela Hoffman it's definitely one of the figures of the Christ in the OT, and Jesus Himself made this connection in John 3:14. problem with these images is that even though they are not made to be worshipped, men is so wicked that he'll turn it into a religion and make rites out of everything... just like they did with the brass snake and even gave it a name, Nehushtan. it had to be destroyed (2 Kings 18:4). kinda reminds me of the signal of the cross used today as a superstitious amulet and many other so-called religious practices.
Only by watching these overviews i've come to learn the deep connection of Exodus to Levitucs and Levitcus to Numbers. God Bless you and your ministry.

The talking donkey, the over abundance of quail, God burning folks up because of their numerous complaints 😂 it’s a lot they didn’t mention. This book is so slept on.
but they do talk about Balaam, who rode the talking donkey! the donkey wasnt the main event there! neither was the warrior angel in the road who was about to smite Balaam. it was about the blessing of Israel and God's protection of them behind the scenes.

The Caduceus, a Greek symbol, is the same snake on a stick, likely taken from Phoenecian encounters with the Hebrews. Hermes, the Greek god of doctors and travelers, weilds a caduceus.

What I always find weird about the promised land is that the Israelites had to kill the other tribes to make it their own land. Why did they had to kill? When it is forbidden to murder? What is your look at this, I find it really hard. It makes God look not loving at all.

Good question. No one ever seems to talk about the Levites slaughtering other Hebrews at Sinai, or being swallowed up in turn for rebellion in numbers. Everyone is so fixated on the Gospel that they neglect the underlying narrative.
I really like the Balak and Balaam story because we don’t hear enough about what the Other peoples thought and felt.
I want to find a good resource on the Egyptians after Exodus, but it seems that they just didn’t write about it. Maybe it was a period of dynastic decline and instability, or an embarrassment, but to think that the formative event the making of the Hebrew people isn’t a ping on Egypt’s radar.

I can't wait to share this video with my upper elementary Sunday School class this morning. We're finishing up our "journey" through the book of Numbers.
What's amazing about this book is how it shows that through the transgressions of the Israelites and their judgment and forgiveness, God is informing us and them that they deserve punishment for their sins, but that God shows mercy to them and frees them from the punishment of their sins if they look up to him.
It's the story of Jesus. We deserve punishment for our sins but God's mercy gives us a way out of the punishment we deserve, because Jesus took the punishment. All we have to do to have our mercy is believe in Christ. Believe in God.

Just a couple of cool notes I've picked up that he didn't mention -
1 - The arrangement of the Israelite camp looked a little more like a cross.
2 - The bronze serpent was representative of Jesus becoming sin on the cross, that's why it was a serpent.

As a Muslim I find the contents of this book to be pretty interesting. How God's presence was at the very center of the 12 tribes. Now, God's presence is at the holy Kaaba - the center of pure monotheistic worship. Muslims from all around the world pray in that direction.

The fact that the Israelites' camp formed the shape of a cross is amazing!
Also, interpreting Moses striking the rock twice as stealing God's glory is valid, but the reading I favor is that he messed up an intended foreshadowing of Christ - Jesus only needed to be struck (killed) once to save humanity, but by striking the rock twice Moses muddied that powerful imagery.

Love the Bible project but I have to highlight the most important part of the story. The bronze snake is a foreshadowing to Christ. The one who would become our sin on the cross. If you miss this in the book of numbers you miss the point. Remember that foreshadowings to Christ and even Jesus himself appear all over the Old Testament. I would even venture to say that all scripture points to Jesus. Don’t miss it

I just made the connection of the 10 bad scouts and the 2 faithful ones. When Isreal split into the Northern and Southern tribes before the Babylonian exile, the South comprised of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.
They were the only ones to survive past it due to the other 10 being conquered by the Assyrians.
Man the Good Lord is subtle but effective ag foreshadowing.
