Numbers: a Quick Overview | Whiteboard Bible Study

  • The book of Numbers tells the story of how and why the Israelites wandered through the wilderness for 40 years on their way to the promised land. It's the fourth installment in the Torah (the first five books of the Bible, traditionally attributed to Moses), and shows how the covenant God made with the nation of Israel cycled from the generation that left Egypt to a new generation.
In Exodus, God rescues the young nation of Israel from slavery in Egypt and makes a special alliance: He will be their God, and they will be his people. As their God, the Lord promises to protect them from enemies and bring them into a good land that he swore to their ancestors. As his people, the Israelites are to remain loyal to God (not worship anyone else) and treat other humans in a way that reflects God's nature.
Numbers gives us a fascinating look at how the ancient Jews saw God's dealings with human decisions. The people of Israel are not loyal to God, and don't trust him to hold up his end of the bargain (to provide for them and bring them safely to the promised land). They forfeit the land and plan to return to Egypt-but instead of allowing the Israelites to re-enslave themselves and their children, God keeps them in the wilderness for 40 years until a new generation can chose whether or not they will be loyal to him.

Great. Remember that The LAW is a Picture of GOD'S CHARACTER (Who's Image We were indeed Created in; yet, reject at every turn, until being Born Again). We don't steal, and are Commanded that becasue GOD is Not a Thuef, and GOD Does Not Covet; thus, We are Commanded in line with what will Bless Us, Beng Made in HIS Image. You will want to refer to John Jay (the fist Sepreme Justice; could've easily been President, but was called by GOD to serve by Applying the Law of GOD to the law of the Land). His work and citing case-law should Bless You and Give You understanding on Our Laws. Let all Truth be Established two to three independent lines of Witness, examined thoroughly.. sound familiar (It's Our Law, straight out of Holy Scripture -civil law). Any questions, and i am happy to serve

Good day, I would just like to clarify that Balaam tried to curse Israel three times and three times God won't allow it but blessed Israel. But Balaam did built seven altars wherein he offered a bull and a ram on each altar. This he did three times per request of Balak to curse Israel. Thanks.

Excellent job 👏 explaining the story of Numbers. 😇 👼 🙏 🤲 ⛪ I really enjoy listening 🎶 to the end of Numbers because their is where it starts to tell a story again and teaches the valuable lessons again. The Beginning of Numbers can be difficult to understand and comprehend; due to the fact it is one long Census of The Hebrew ppl and all that they have and the names of important ppl I guess. But once again, you do an excellent job explaining 👏 Thank you take care. 😇 👼 😇 👼 😇 👼 The part when Mirian catches Leopsy was sad 😔 and the part where Aaron and Moses died was sad 😔 too. All who are listening 🎶 and watching 👀 🤔 whole heartly ❤ may their be a blessing 🙌 🙏 in your life. 😇 👼 😇 👼 😇 👼 😇 👼 It is true The Lord wants us to find him someway somehow.

@@OverviewBible I finished Leviticus a few days ago, and I'm reading Numbers now. I like watching videos about a book before I read it, to help me understand it better as I go, and yours are a go-to for me. But it was a legit question. It seemed pretty clear to me that God was serious about what He was saying to the Israelites in Leviticus. Are you saying they really didn't have to obey the law? Thanks for the reply, but now I'm just more confused by it.

The Exodus account expressly includes Yahweh acknowledging the gods of Egypt (Exodus 12:12).

Question: How come God doesn't open up the world to swallow Rebels like Isis or the Taliban nowadays anymore?
Why aren't Angels with messages from visiting chosen ppl anymore?
What happened to all these prophets that were all over the Bible?
What about the science of dinosaurs, are they written about in the Bible, cause I don't remember that?
I grew up in a very strict catholic family in Germany and church on Sundays was a must, weekdays my grandma rode her bike to church and sometimes we went with her.
The church scared the crap out of me when it came to hell and the devil, cause grandma always told us that if we're bad or lie the devil will come and get us or Krampus who actually came to our house and I was put in a potato sack, carried into our deep dark basement and then he pulled me out and told me I'd have to sit in this dark basement for hours and think about my bad grades, lies and bad behavior I might've displayed throughout the year.
He told me that he was going to take me with him, but Santa told him to give me another chance since I did sing him a nice song and wrote a nice poem and that I have the potential to become a better little girl.
Now obviously it wasn't really Krampus, it was a family member or a friend who played the role of Krampus and I almost pooped my pants.
I had to sit in there for hours in the dark after he walked off with his loud chains, horns and ugly face.
Why would you do that to a kid?
    Gave me PTSD!
But yeah as a kid the church scared me more than it ever gave me hope, love or a sense if belonging.
Before my 1st communion I had to go to girls Bible study and usually it was at a classmates home where the mom there held the study. So I'm familiar with the Bible, even though I forgot a lot and I don't remember anything about dinosaurs and we know they existed at some point and we found out that ppl didn't look like angelic Adam and Eve, a bit more hary, more ape like and no known language.
    So what's up with that?
And again, where are all these miracles today, has God given up on us?

    • @OverviewBible
      @OverviewBible  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, Stephanie! Sounds like your family had some dramatic traditions. I'm sorry to hear your childhood included such frightening experiences, and I hope you've found help when it comes to healing. Childhood trauma can be awful.
I'm not in a position to address some of these questions, since I don't know why some churches, cultures, and families exercise their faith in the ways they do. Regarding dinosaurs, the Bible's not an ancient zoology textbook. Since no dinosaurs seem to have crossed paths with the ancient Israelites or early church in any significant ways, I'm not sure why we should expect them to come up in the Bible.
Re: prophets, both Moses and Paul wished that there were more who would prophesy (Numbers 11:29; 1 Corinthians 14:5). However, prophecy in ancient Israel and the early church wasn't so much about having visions, telling the future, or working miracles. Rather, it was calling people into alignment with God. There are plenty of people hard at work on this front today.
Re: miracles, I don't know what kind of miracles do or don't happen today. There are sections of the population who believe that supernatural works like those in the Bible can and do still take place. But I think most people today would agree that indoor plumbing, modern medicine, and Internet access are a lot more useful to humanity as a whole than having a handful of miracle workers.
Re: the earth swallowing up terrorist organizations, I think this is missing the point. Remember, Korah rebelled against Moses, who brought Israel the Torah. As far as the author of Numbers was concerned, opposing Moses was the same as opposing God in this case. The earth swallowing up Korah was a sign for the survivors that Moses wasn't speaking on his own authority, but truly was representing their god, Yahweh (Numbers 16:28-30).
