The bronze snake is what brought me to Jesus Christ in February of 2022, so Numbers is an incredibly special and important Book of the Bible to me. I saw Jordan Petersen talking about the Bronze Snake on the Joe Rogan Experience on a TH-cam clip show. Having been raised entirely secular I wasn’t familiar with the story, but I suddenly realized that the ENTIRE Bible was all about Jesus. I was completely awestruck by this out of the blue realization. And I knew, I just KNEW that I had been wrong about God and religion for my entire life, and that the Bible was absolutely the divine Word of God. I was a 52 year old atheist at the time. It was a very 21st century ‘Road to Damascus’ moment. And I have been living for Jesus and learning best how to serve Him ever since. I am so grateful to God for not giving up on me. Thank you Pastor Keller for all of these deep insights, and wonderful summation, of one of my favorite Books of the Bible. God bless you.
I loved reading what you wrote - thank you. I was a convert when I realised that the whole bible was about Jesus - that the whole bible is one message - and it was a huge moment for me. I began to read whole chunks of it again knowing that I would be doing so in a new way.
Thank you for sharing that - I loved getting to read how God has worked to bring you to Jesus! Brought a tear to my eyes. May the Lord bless and keep you, sister!
I can't tell you how thank I am for this series. The group I lead just completed Leviticus and we started numbers tonight. I was praying to God how am I going to get people to look deeper into the book of Numbers. Earlier this year when I led the 90 day challenge with another group, a great deal of people was absent during this boo because they think it's "boring". In fact, with group 2 I have to consistently remind them the importance of the Old testament and how it all points to the NT and Jesus reason for coming in the first place! I prayed and God answered my prayers through this series. This is confirmation, I am heading in the right direction and getting my groups to go deeper into reading the scripture beyond the surface. Thank you for all you do. Your insight is incredible! Thank you Holy Spirit for pointing me to this series.
Pastor Keller, this series you are doing is blessing me RICHLY. I thank God for Him leading me to you a couple of years ago on a radio station playing your sermons. I am just caught this video. I am going back to the the first one and going to use it to study with my Bible and learn about Jesus in the books that I struggled with. Thank you so much for this. Many prayers for you and your health, and prayers of thankfulness for you in my life.
The Old Testament is the New concealed, and the New is the Old revealed, how amazing is the Word! Really enjoy listening to these teachings. I remember reading the story of Joseph over and over because every time I read how he (Joseph) revealed himself to his brothers I would cry but I didn’t really know why, so I would read it all over again. Then one day I realised, Jesus came to His own, the Jews, but they didn’t recognise Him, just as Joseph’s brothers didn’t recognise him. Ah…..but then he revealed himself to them! How wonderful that day when Jesus reveals Himself to His Jewish brothers!!!
Such a powerful and uplifting message! Thank you, Tim Keller, for reminding us of the transformative power of being born again. May everyone watching this find inspiration and strength in these words. Wishing all of you the very best in your journey of faith and life. Blessings to all! 🙏✨"
Loving this series by Tim Keller. Reading his biography. I believe he got the idea of Christ in all the scriptures from Mr Clowney, his mentor. I am very grateful to both of these men for taking us back to Christ all the time!
Amen and it's never easy to summarize a book chapter by chapter...let alone the most important yet profound book that ever existed. May the Lord be with you each and every day and fill your heart with joy and peace Mr Keller. Thank you
This is the most beautiful and helpful explanation of the book of numbers. 😊 The wilderness experience. The period between deliverance and the promised land. Thank you so much!
I started reading the Book of Numbers. I am also listening to it on audio, reading commentaries, and listening to youtube on the Book of Numbers. It is challenging a sista'..but I am going to stick thought it!
This is amazing. We praise God for presenting Christ in this way. From the passage I also noticed that the people wanted the snake gone (v 21:7). But, God's way was different, in that it was the venom that was gone. "Anyone who is bitten can look at it and live". Isn't that what Christ did in removing the power of sin.
Tim Keller? That overview of Numbers was truly fantastic!! Therefore, I just subscribed to his channel. This is the first time I’ve heard him, but I’m looking forward to more! And it’s good to know that Tim is located in NYC and has a direct impact there with the Good News of Jesus the Savior & Lord.
I always wait for this video every week. The series are very helpful. I hope Pastor Keller could write a book about all these episodes - "Discovering the Gospel in every Book of the Bible."
The life, death, resurrection and ascension of Christ are the elements of the Gospel. To enter the Christian experience and grow in it conviction against sin, repentance from sin, and trusting Christ are the only passage thereto. The study and personal applications of the Bible is an adventure of self discovery, hope, and blessing. False teaching is the big danger from without and pride the danger from within myself. Separation from the surrounding corrupt, reprobate society isn't a big deal since the loss is beneficial.
Saved by Grace not Works (By Faith in Christ’s work not ours) BUT Grace always leads to a transformed life of works Moses interceded imperfectly for the temporal salvation of the people Christ interceded perfectly for the eternal salvation of his people The joyful, faith-filled, pure Nazarite took an oath to dedicate himself to God. Christ is the true Spirit-filled Nazarite who transfers his purity and life to us Christ is the true Bronze Serpent who was lifted up and saves from the wrath of God and venom of sin. We are saved by looking up to Christ, by beholding him, and receiving his work on our behalf by faith. Thank you Tim.
If you discovered Anything in Numbers..You are a Genius! It was good to put me to sleep! I read the Bible for Content. I am Loved 🥰 I am Blessed 😇 all I Need to Know! 😊❤
Hebrew name for the book : In the wilderness, that pretty much sets the focus . Love Keller’s emphasis on two points : 1. Jesus could touch death and not be ceremoniously unclean for he is Life ; he is the resurrection . Therefore we have hope in him alone . 2. We need only look to Jesus as the wilderness wanderers who obeyed did looking at the bronze serpent . This was not an orderly event ; as the plague spread it was chaos ; panic everywhere ; people dying ; yet some did look . And I ; if I be lifted up , I will draw all men unto me . Jesus messiah .
I think you can also see the Gospel in the Aaronic Blessing (in Numbers chapter 6): Key numbers to unlock the passage: Key 1 - bless “How BLESSED is he whose wrongdoing is forgiven, Whose sin is covered! How BLESSED is a person whose guilt the Lord does not take into account,” Psalms 32:1-2 Key 2 - keep “Now unto him that is able to KEEP you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,” Jude 1:24 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are KEPT by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:3-5 Key 3 - caused by God “But the Lord has CAUSED the wrongdoing of us all To fall on Him.” Isaiah 53:6 “This came about from [was caused by] the Lord; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has made [caused]; Let’s rejoice and be glad in it. Please, O Lord, do save us; Please, O Lord, do send prosperity! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord; We have blessed you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and He has given us LIGHT; Bind the festival sacrifice to the horns of the altar with cords.” Psalms 118:23-27 “No man can come to me, except THE FATHER which hath sent me DRAW him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all TAUGHT OF GOD. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath LEARNED OF THE FATHER, cometh unto me.” John 6:44-45 Key 4 - FACE / SEEK HIS FACE In Matthew, Jesus talks about John the Baptist: “This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your FACE, who will prepare your way before you.’” Matthew 11:10 Jesus was quoting Malachi: “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye SEEK, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.” Malachi 3:1 “When thou saidst, SEEK ye MY FACE; my heart said unto thee, THY FACE, LORD, will I seek. Hide not THY FACE far from me;” Psalm 27:8-9 From these verses, Jesus could be described as the FACE of the Lord. “Jesus said “The one who has seen Me has seen the Father;” John 14:9 Jesus = the Lord’s Face Key 5 - SHINE About Jesus: “In Him was life, and the life was the LIGHT of mankind. And the LIGHT SHINES in the darkness,” John 1:4-5 “in Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great LIGHT: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the LIGHT SHINED.” Isaiah 9:1-2 “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the LIGHT of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the LIGHT of life.”” John 8:12 Key 6 - gracious “For by GRACE you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 “For the wages of sin is death, but the GRACIOUS gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23 Key 7 - lift up “And just as Moses LIFTED UP the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man [Jesus/GOD’S FACE] be LIFTED UP, so that everyone who believes will have eternal life in Him.” John 3:14-15 Key 8 - peace “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have PEACE with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” Romans 5:1 Key 9 - invoke the Lord’s Name / call on the Lord’s Nsme “I will lift up the cup of salvation and INVOKE the Lord’s Name.” Psalms 116:13 “Everyone who CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD will be saved.” Romans 10:13 “Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins by CALLING ON HIS NAME.’” Acts 22:16 “These things I have written to you who BELIEVE IN THE NAME of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other NAME under heaven that has been given among mankind BY WHICH WE MUST BE SAVED.” Acts 4:12 “The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not BELIEVED in THE NAME of the only Son of God.” John 3:18 --------------------- With all of the above in mind, read this very familiar passage from the Bible and it might seem new and different to you: “The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord cause His face to shine on you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His face to you, And give you peace.’ So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and then I will bless them.”” Numbers 6:24-27 Ok, now you can read it again with the KEY NUMBERS: The Lord “BLESS” you (1) and “KEEP” you (2) The Lord “CAUSE” (3) His “FACE” (4) to “SHINE“ (5) on you And be “GRACIOUS” to you (6) The Lord “LIFT UP” (7) His “FACE” (4) to you And give you “PEACE”. (8) So they shall “INVOKE MY NAME” (9) on the sons of Israel, and then I will “BLESS” them.”” (1) Numbers 6:24-27 Aaron’s blessing is perhaps not just a generic blessing of general favour but actually a prophecy and a prayer for God’s plan of salvation and the Gospel. It’s amazing to think that for over a thousand years, whenever Jews prayed this prayer, they were praying for God to cause Jesus to come and be lifted up and shine and by grace offer peace - they were praying for God to cause salvation. And after about 1400 years of praying this prayer, Jesus finally arrived! Praise God! --------------------- Jesus said to the Pharisees: “You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is those very Scriptures that testify about Me;” John 5:39 “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.” John 5:46 Aaron’s Beneduction/Blessing is of course from the book of Numbers - which was written by Moses. ------------------ “As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven-things into which angels long to look.” 1 Peter 1:10-12
I’m newer to Christianity, and want to understand… did Jesus have to die cursed (on the tree) because he HAD to sin in order for us sinners to once again have access to God? I understand the sacrifice part of the crucifixion, but was it the act of the sin itself that reunited us?
Jesus came to live the perfect life in our place that we could not live and he took on our sin (though he himself never sinned) and gave us His righteousness. If you continue to listen to these videos about the Old Testament, you will see the theme of sacrifice over and over again and everything pointing to Jesus as the perfect sacrificial lamb. It was his sacrifice that was necessary in order to make us right with God. If you trust that Jesus alone/his work on the cross is sufficient and enough to cover your sin, that is what the whole Bible in its entirety is the message being taught. "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." -2 Corinthians 5:21 "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet he did not sin." -Hebrews 4:15 "For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh, so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." - Romans 8:3-4
Will there be a discussion guide for this series? I'm hoping to adapt this series for a group discussion and have checked out the Gospel in Life website but can't find it if it exists.
I'm confused. In pslams a man said "darkness has been my only friend" which implies God has abandoned him....or at least he feels abandoned. Yet, another place asks if the clay speaks back to its maker. Can we question God? I am doing my best to hear from God ...even seek him but man.....I wrestle with God. I don't want to wrestle any more. I need answers. I need him to pursue me. Why do I feel so abandoned by someone who says they are my father or a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
God loves you (and all of us) and He wants us to love Him in return, but it says in Hebrews 11:6 "Without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him." Believing His Word is an act of faith. -- The Book of Psalms gives us examples of prayers of faith, prayers of rejoicing, of praise, but also prayers of despair and desperation. Tim Keller's Sermon entitled "Heman's Cry of Darkness" is a help in understanding this aspect of our relationship with the Lord (which discusses the passage you quote from Psalm 88).
the catholic church was never about communion with God it was about communion with pope francis instead who says things that go against the bible instead of just things that agree with the bible
After hearing your opening statement, I'm not going to listen to the rest of your teaching. Just because Jesus died does not mean we are saved. Just because we believe does not mean we are saved and what is it that we are supposed to believe? What does scripture say? Romans 10:9,10 Believe in your 'heart' that God raised Jesus from the dead "And confess Jesus as Lord". For with the 'heart' (no doubt) you believe and are "justified" 'And' with the mouth confession is made unto Salvation.
So then - can gospel preaching be reduced to three words - look to Jesus? The answer is 'only in particular circumstances'. When you've been wandering around in the desert - looking to yourself - and it's come to nothing - and you know that you are alienated from God because of sin - when you've reached the end of yourself - when you know you are under judgement for your wrongdoing - then being told to look to Jesus and be healed is enough. People must either already know by their circumstances what faith in God means or we have to make sure that we take them to that place. To be saved isn't faith only that God is God - because the devil believes that. It isn't faith that Jesus died for people's sin because the devil also believes that. It isn't trusting that one's sin has been forgiven - because if that was the case trusting would be unnecessary - it would just be a fact. Authentic faith is belief in God's right to our lives even if in offering ourselves he does not accept us. It is the end of all belief in ourselves. It is bridge burning - it is knowing that if God does not accept us that honesty will require us to live as those who are forever without hope - as those indebted to God even if he should never turn his face toward us.
What did Jesus say about salvation? First of all you had to be a good Jew. Why else would he have asked the wealthy an have you kept the law and the prophets. Then Jesus said something remarkable, sell your wealth and give the money to the poor. Talk about works! You don't get much more of an example of works than that. In other places it is clear that works mattered to Jesus. As you do for the least of these, hungry naked in jail you do for me. Was he kidding when he said that? And what as the third thing Jesus wanted. Follow me. So why follow Jesus? When he said that people were literally following Jesus. What was it like to follow Jesus? Jesus was teaching , teaching in parables so people would not understand. Crazy right. Understanding you see is not important. The book of numbers is not important. Salvation is not a test to see how much you know about the bible. There is something greater than knowing. Jesus said be likes child, be like the flowers. Jesus healed people but then he told them don't tell anyone that I healed you. Only in the book of John does Jesus use healing as a sign but John got many things wrong. To follow Jesus was to show compassion, for others and for ourselves. To be grateful for our daily bread, as simple as that.

I think you can also see the Gospel in the Aaronic Blessing (in Numbers chapter 6):
Key numbers to unlock the passage:
Key 1 - bless
“How BLESSED is he whose wrongdoing is forgiven, Whose sin is covered!
How BLESSED is a person whose guilt the Lord does not take into account,”
Psalms 32:1-2
Key 2 - keep
“Now unto him that is able to KEEP you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,”
Jude 1:24
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are KEPT by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
1 Peter 1:3-5
Key 3 - caused by God
“But the Lord has CAUSED the wrongdoing of us all To fall on Him.”
Isaiah 53:6
“This came about from [was caused by] the Lord; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has made [caused]; Let’s rejoice and be glad in it. Please, O Lord, do save us; Please, O Lord, do send prosperity! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord; We have blessed you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and He has given us LIGHT; Bind the festival sacrifice to the horns of the altar with cords.”
Psalms 118:23-27
“No man can come to me, except THE FATHER which hath sent me DRAW him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all TAUGHT OF GOD. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath LEARNED OF THE FATHER, cometh unto me.”
John 6:44-45
Key 4 - FACE / SEEK HIS FACE
In Matthew, Jesus talks about John the Baptist:
“This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your FACE, who will prepare your way before you.’”
Matthew 11:10
Jesus was quoting Malachi:
“Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye SEEK, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.”
Malachi 3:1
“When thou saidst, SEEK ye MY FACE; my heart said unto thee, THY FACE, LORD, will I seek. Hide not THY FACE far from me;”
Psalm 27:8-9
From these verses, Jesus could be described as the FACE of the Lord.
“Jesus said “The one who has seen Me has seen the Father;”
John 14:9
Jesus = the Lord’s Face
Key 5 - SHINE
About Jesus:
“In Him was life, and the life was the LIGHT of mankind. And the LIGHT SHINES in the darkness,”
John 1:4-5
“in Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great LIGHT: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the LIGHT SHINED.”
Isaiah 9:1-2
“Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the LIGHT of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the LIGHT of life.””

Key 7 - lift up

With all of the above in mind, read this very familiar passage from the Bible and it might seem new and different to you:
“The Lord bless you,
and keep you;
The Lord cause His face to shine on you,
And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His face to you,
And give you peace.’
So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and then I will bless them.””
Numbers 6:24-27
Ok, now you can read it again with the KEY NUMBERS:
The Lord “BLESS” you (1)
and “KEEP” you (2)
The Lord “CAUSE” (3) His “FACE” (4) to “SHINE“ (5) on you
And be “GRACIOUS” to you (6)
The Lord “LIFT UP” (7) His “FACE” (4) to you
And give you “PEACE”. (8)
So they shall “INVOKE MY NAME” (9)
on the sons of Israel, and then I will “BLESS” them.”” (1)
Numbers 6:24-27
Aaron’s blessing is perhaps not just a generic blessing of general favour but actually a prophecy and a prayer for God’s plan of salvation and the Gospel.
Praise God!

Jesus said to the Pharisees:
“You examine the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is those very Scriptures that testify about Me;”
John 5:39
“For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me.”
John 5:46
Aaron’s Beneduction/Blessing is of course from the book of Numbers - which was written by Moses.
------------------
“As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven-things into which angels long to look.”
1 Peter 1:10-12
Aleluia!!
"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."
-2 Corinthians 5:21
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet he did not sin." -Hebrews 4:15
"For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin.
Hello Caitlin and how are you doing?
❤
When we read the bible, should keep in mind the context of history, it's multiple translation and Greek Roman interferencez
what was the scripture he mentions in hebrews?
Read James 2:24
Ephesians 2:8-9
the catholic church was never about communion with God it was about communion with pope francis instead who says things that go against the bible instead of just things that agree with the bible
Just look...
After hearing your opening statement, I'm not going to listen to the rest of your teaching.
Just because Jesus died does not mean we are saved.
Just because we believe does not mean we are saved and what is it that we are supposed to believe?
What does scripture say?
Romans 10:9,10
Believe in your 'heart' that God raised Jesus from the dead "And confess Jesus as Lord".
Oh man Tim Keller lost so much weight...
